Campbell's Bakery in Madison is shutting it's doors. The business announced on Facebook yesterday:
This page, along with Campbell’s Bakery in Madison at Colony Crossing, will be closing as of today. We have loved being a part of Madison and your lives and events and celebrations for the past several years. As Covid numbers have increased our sales have dropped and we can no longer rob from Peter to pay Paul. The Fondren location will remain open as we consolidate in order to try and make it through this unprecedented time.If you have an order to pick up next week at the Madison location it will be available at Fondren or we can deliver if needed. We will be reaching out to all customers with orders today.
The other Campbell's stores will rock on as they have always done.

Madison Ian doomed. A spiral down hill.
Madison will have nothing to do with progressive business. No MM and no rainbow flags. Kroger cakes are just fine.
Brick column Burger Kings and Applebee’s are hard to beat. Independent businesses beware of operating in Madison “the city”.
Didn’t Hops and Habanas fail in Madison also? Should have opened a Schlitz and Winstons.
Kroger’s and Walmart’s are killing it.
You can buy recently defrosted cupcakes of decent quality at Kroger. Why would you buy fresh for a dollar more at a local place? How could you pay for your over leveraged mansion if you buy local cupcakes?
Quality baked goods. Jackson 1, Madison 0
Mary gonna have to run for some office again to stop this from happening. Probably Bomgars fault.
Should have branched out to Byram. Or Clinton. Or Pearl.
Word on the street is that sewage was backing up into the lot.
Did they put that “All are Welcome” sticker on the door? That was their doom.
Campbell’s won an award in the JFP. You can’t operate in Madison if your are preferred by JFP
Campbell’s is awesome. Madison sucks.
Go to the Sunflower in Canton if you want baked goods.
There’s a reason Jeff Goode hasn’t moved his stuff to Madison by now.
Get a double doozie at the mall. Can’t be beat.
Probably should have stayed put over in old Madison location but may not have had a choice but to move.
I never knew Campbell’s was in Madison. All I heard from my officials was about the impending pot shop coming.
Campbell’s is in Madison?
Dang. Never knew it was in Madison. I do love the Madison nutrition smoothies though. I am soooo healthy now.
Campbell’s has quality stuff. No wonder they closed.
Costco killed them.
Give me Shipley’s any day
A soup place will never make it in Mississippi.
"There’s a reason Jeff Goode hasn’t moved his stuff to Madison by now."
I think there is one, coincidentally really close to this newly-closed cupcake joint, but it's a franchise with different owners and no investment from Jeff Goode (or Blumenthal).
I recently ordered a custom cake from them. It was made in their Jackson store and delivered for pick up in the Madison store. I had to Google maps to find it. It wasn't worth the price or effort.
The trolls are out in force on the Sabbath. Sad.
I thought Mary could mandate success and failure.
Hops and Habanas closed? Where was it?
If Mary liked donuts.....
Too much coverage in the JFP. We all boycotted.
Clearly Biblical. Stand firm Madison!.
If you’re buying, we are selling.
Apparently we weren’t buying.
If quality local opens in the burbs, would anybody notice?
I really prefer those little three-packs of Colonial glazed donuts that look like they have been sweating for a few years. Sooo tasty. Signed, a dude in the food desert.
PS I also like Tater logs at Chevron
Madison rocks!.
This may be the the last hip, Jackson based franchise Mary ever approves. How dare they close.
Where am I gonna get my 1,400 calorie snack in the morning?
Decimating middle class/working class citizens ability to earn a living while the Government "Public Servants" continue to feed from the trough.
I know a couple of teachers who were extremely happy to keep on virtual "Teaching"...which in itself is an oxymoron. I recently read the combined Teachers Uions have 3 million members, the most powerful unions in the US.
How can small business & blue collar workers compete with $32 million in contributions by the 2 unions, NEA & AFT partnership, with 94% going to Democrats & Democratic PACs.

Haha. Yeah, the anti-cupcake trolls we out. Anytime something happens bad for Madison, it’s because of trolls. You wouldn’t know quality if you ran into it, unless it was a brick column at the Burger King Drive-thru.
Everyone commenting must have nothing else to do. If people don’t go to Campbells it’s everyone else’s fault but the store. That’s the way business is some make it some don’t. But of course it is not the businesses fault.
Like others, I didn’t realize they had moved from their original Madison location. When did that happen, and why? Surely the rent was cheaper at the first place.
6:01, WTF has that got to do with a cupcake store? Seriously, a local, quality place opens, locals don’t support it, it closes and you are taking talking unions and conspiracy theories?
Strange. Campbells is doing fine at their new location in Belhaven (that's in Jackson, for all the hater's info). Good crowds - granted no brick columns required) - and survived the COVID issues even though they opened at the beginning of the shutdowns. Guess us folks in old town don't care if the exterior of the building matches the neighborhood, Wait - their new location at the Town Center is an exact replica of the old building that was demolished to build its replacement. Guess we didn't require matching a new look, and preferred something that was generally appropriate but not a snooty new generic plan with brick columns and fake stucco
People in Madison “the city” hate cup cakes. Stay away from the cup cakes!!!!
Campbell’s failure is NOT due to a lack of fat people in Madison. It had to be about price point.
@ 6:28, you must be one of the fat people, and cheap.
Its hard to compete with Costco, Kroger, Walmart, or Fresh Market bakeries for people who are spending 40%-50% of their income on their mortgage...the local place has to charge more and most people really don't know the difference between the chain store baked goods and the local place.
I thought the Campbell's Bakery first Madison location on Jones Street was a location. The new location over by Kroger West is a pain to get into for some reason.
45 comments about a cup cake place. Sooo sensitive.
Seems they needed to advertise a bit more since myself and many others had NO clue the place even existed in Madison?
And last I checked, Supply and Demand determine who prospers in Capitalism...not just Madison, MS?
Fear not though, at this rate...I am sure future politicians will agree that US residents are clearly the problem if a business fails and they'll mandate all business be patronized equally and mindlessly.
CBM cupcake batter matters! Really some of you need to run a business to understand how the real world works! It’s hard making sure you have the money for payroll and expenses and you budget out what you think you need. With COVID some people will buy the cheaper Wal Mart brands when they are concerned about saving money everywhere the can.
Slow news day in the big city ;-)
@5:16 PM,
"There’s a reason Jeff Goode hasn’t moved his stuff to Madison by now."
You are uninformed. Sal & Mookie's has opened a location in Madison in the old Georgia Blue location which is next door to the now closed Campbell's. Continue to roam the streets of Jackson while watching over you shoulder.
What about other businesses who’ve closed such as PF Chang’s,ect. Why is Campbell’s so special that they deserve a post? What about all the other local establishments who’ve struggled or closed?
Supply and demand. Capitalism 101.
Some troll obviously had nothing going on at 5:00. No way a post here about a bakery would legitimately get a comment per minute on a Sunday afternoon.
Grown ass men fighting about a cookie store and who’s city is the best. This is Mississippi folks, it’s like arguing who the smartest kid on the short bus is.
Ordered a birthday cake from there ONCE, a week in advance. It tasted like it sat in a refrigerator for a week. As a Madison resident, I’d rather give my business to Nothing Bundt Cakes. Sorry, not sorry.
Everyone calm down.
The little trolls can't afford Campbel's.
If their parents send them extra money, they might splurge on Little Debbie products twice a year.
I do hope they learn how to nuke a Lil' Debbie Nutty Buddy in the microwave and pour
the deliciousness on top of a bowl of Blue Bell Vanilla.
However, I'm glad the Fondren location will remain open.
Contrary to what that area is now, it is Jackson history.
"Grown ass men fighting about a cookie store and who’s city is the best."
Laughing very loud now.
The wife is convinced I have a hidden stash of rum somewhere near the iMac.
@8:06 - it’s you who is uninformed, although I doubt you will admit it. The Madison Sal & Mookies is a franchise. Jeff Good has nothing to do with it other than licensing the name and a few recipes.
@8:06. No, you’re uniformed. Sal & Mookie’s in Madison is a franchise. Not owned by Jeff Good.
It's just a bakery, guys. Yeesh. Business opens and close all the time.
Oh, and yes, we did report the closure of P.F. Changs and plenty of other businesses over the years.
First the KFC is gone and now Campbells.
Who's next ?
For those of you who are continually geographically challenged, Costco and PF Chang’s are located in Ridgeland, not the city of Madison. Two different entities altogether. As for the Madison Campbell’s bakery, the quality baked goods I received there never compared to their original location. That has nothing to to with Madison. There are local cake decorators making better, more delicious cakes in their homes and selling them on Instagram. I’ll give my money to those local businesses because the product is better. Still love Campbell’s caramel cake though!
There's a Sunflower in Canton? Who knew? Surprised Mayor Truly has not yet ruled those flowers to be racist.
The ladies at Madison Kroger use the same squeeze bags to frost their 40cent cupcakes as the silk-britches folks use for their $1.49 cupcakes. However, it's also true that many are not scarfing down sweets like they used to years ago.
For those who have not noticed, drive-thrus are stacked up thirty to forty cars/trucks deep at every Madison lunch location. This place had no drive-thru.
PS: Burger King has a new facelift but you can NOT disguise nasty. Have not been to that place in ten years. Taco Bell will be a shell before you know it, pun intended.
Cupcakes = Snowflakes
P. F. Changs - swill for the masses. Never trust a chinese restaurant with non-asians in the kitchen. But that's Madison for you.
@12/6 5:38 pm. The Sabbath runs from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. Did you keep it holy? Or did you watch kids playing the football?
Ain’t nobody more ignorant of the Bible than self righteous baptists
PF Chang's is to Chinese food as Taco Bell is to Mexican food. It's not.
Another dummy appears at 6:17 thinking Changs was in Madison. Of course he gets his Chinese food at the donut place in Canton and never visited the place.
December 7 6 am Again, as stated before, PFChangs is in RIDGELAND. Please study a map before attempting to condescend.
PF Chang was gross. Overpriced fake Asian food.
Primos makes delicious cakes. I love their Italian Cream and carrot cakes.
Look at the first 10-15 comments. The time stamp is almost identical. Looks like the same person made back to back comments. I would say trolls but obviously a singular troll just regurgitating hate from his moms basement
"PF Chang's is to Chinese food as Taco Bell is to Mexican food. It's not."
Is there any place left other than the occasional Chinese buffet...and all of them are prolly closed down too.
@5:30 - Like you, I was wondering where the Sunflower in Canton is. There hasnt been a Sunflower in Canton for at least 50+ years. Canton has 1 Piggly Wiggly, 1 Sav-A-Lot, 1 Dollar Genral grocery on an old filled in sewage lagoon and a not worth a damn Walmart.
Someone please show me where the new Sunflower is in Canton ! ! ! !
They seemed to not ever have anything there to buy. It's like they were hedging their bets against wasting any food by only bringing a little inventory over from the Jackson store daily, and hoping to survive on pre-placed orders. I never had any luck walking in and buying something as simple as even cookies...
The nearest Sunflower that I know of is in Durant, Mississippi.
Ridgeland and Madison, the City. It's all the same to most people, including me. No difference whatsoever. Arguing over the exact location on PF Changs....LOL....those Madison, "the City" boys sure have a chip on their shoulders!
I'm going to disagree with 8:46. Canton may not have a lot going for it, but the Canton Walmart is consistently the cleanest and most organized Walmart in the metro area. I frequently bypass the Walmart in Madison and head straight to Canton. The store management is doing something there that the company needs to mirror elsewhere.
Lol at the folks who believe the bakery goods at Kroger are in the same stratosphere as those from Campbell's. Face it, most Madisonites are over extended on their mortgages and car leases and cannot afford but to purchase subpar, cheaper goods from big box stores and franchises. It's why the city of Madison is completely devoid of quality restaurants - there is no disposable income to go have a $150 dinner out with your wife at a Walker's type establishment after the $3000 monthly mortgage and the $1500 monthly car leases.
Raymond has a sunflower. It’s small but the fried chicken in the deli is better than anything in Madison except for what Mint used to serve.
Jackson's better! Nana.nana.nana!!!!! ...NO!!!... Madison's better!!!!!!
You got shit stucco!!! Yeah?... You got crappy governance!!! ...and streets!!!
...
....
...
...
Well... my daddy can beat up your daddy!!!
Hops and Habana in Fondren closing too. Another, current, Fondren business will be expanding as it moves into its place.
For those in Jackson that never go anywhere because you lack the money, there is a huge difference between Madison and Ridgeland. They are two separate cities with two sets of governing bodies. And to say someone in Madison is upside down on a house mortgage just shows a lack of knowledge. Most in Madison have no mortgage. Their homes were laid off in 15 years. If you work hard at a job and set goals you, too, can do such things.
Oh, I can still drive my car, that I own, to Fondren and buy a Campbell’s cake.
Everything I have ordered and or picked up from the Madison location tasted old... Cakes Cookies, cupcakes.. Nothing was made there or tasted like it was made in the 3 days before pickup or purchase.
Dont blame the city, blame the business
A business has to make enough bread to stay in business. Economics 101.
Is a bakery a bakery if you can't walk in the door and purchase a cake? I tried to patronize their CC location on two occasions only to be told they had no cakes available for immediate sale.
1:00....just write it on the internet and it becomes truth. To the person who wrote it.
Most people in Madison have no mortgage. That's a hoot.
The Campbell's owner is the first one to disparage somebody selling a cake from a cottage kitchen, but all of these satellite branches of his were him just trying to elbow out competition in the burbs. Competition and markets can be a bitch.
It's a shame...The Fondren is doomed.
Mortgages in Madison The City? - those are very rare, and usually involve displaced Jacksonites.
Our last Mississippi home was in Madison. I'm still visit. So, I'd like to clarify a thing or two.
Nobody we knew there, had any idea there had ever been a Campbell's in Madison. Who eats sweets, anymore? Who eats GRAINS, anymore? Who hasn't "GONE KETO"? Bakeries are viewed as dinosaurs, in the same way that ice cream shoppes and liquor stores are. Why waste money on things that make you fat, ugly, stupid, and POOR?
As for mortgages and car payments, why tie up your money, when you can borrow at or below the (true) rate of inflation? There's such a thing as leveraging, you know. Owning a million-Dollar home, is the same as owning a ten-unit apartment building - only with a dependable tenant who won't trash the place (oneself). Same, basically, with cars. If Lexus Financial is offering you a rate below inflation, you're better-off parking the money where it will out-perform inflation.
And now, for those "brick columns" on the Burger King. There ARE NO COLUMNS on the Burger King. There are some pilasters. But they seem to be of wood. There are some slight brick pooch-outs, toward the rear of the building (half-a-brick thick), like you see on all prewar brick buildings in Mississippi. Those are not columns. They're called 'BUTTRESSES'.
But yes: Madisonians (at least the ones in our old gang) are loathe to squander money on temporary pleasures, when they're scroungin' shekels to invest. For what a cake costs (or a bottle of booze, or a gallon of good ice cream, you can buy a share of stock (or several...).
We wish Campbells's the best. They're nice folks, and deserve success. But sugar and grains are no longer part of our world.
Y’all do realize all the batter made for the Jackson location has Jackson water in it, don’t you? You really think they boil that shit every other week when they have big orders? The rent in Madison is too much for most businesses. Georgia Blue made it work so well, they stepped on a limb and built the largest restaurant in Madison County. No demand, no supply.
The rent was much higher than the old crappy building where they are located downtown. They kept no inventory and the staff sucked, there are lots more folks making good sweets and cakes these dats. They have competition. I went to buy a king cake back in February and it was not good and it was very expensive. Don’t blame Madison , This location was a poor choice!
Madison building a strip mall when other cities (Flowood, Ridgeland, Pearl, should we even mention Jackson) are struggling to keep stores.
Clinton still hasn't gotten theirs off the ground.
There's going to be a lot of Planet Fitness and Spirit Halloween locations in our future.
@11:30 - Thanks for mentioning the Raymond Sunflower. The ladies who cook breakfast and lunch there everyday are awesome. It is just a little hole-in-the-wall area in the front of the store, but they produce delicious grits, eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits every morning and fantastic fried chicken for lunch. I think I'll drive over there this morning for breakfast. Need to get out of the house for awhile and do something different for a change.
I thought a bowling alley will be Huuugggeee for the community locate it right next to the Po Po station.
Would it be OK to mention that the only reason these grocery stores have fried chicken at noon is because they have to either fry or toss the ten day old chicken in the cold-case? You people think these stores are doing you a favor by serving up that crunchy, hot, fabulous fried chicken? Shit...You're doing them a favor by buying what was ten minutes shy of hitting the dumpster.
Remember when Madison 51 Kroger had fried chicken on the breakfast menu twelve years ago, with that old retired sailor in charge? That was the green-chicken from the 'toss soon' shelf.
I don't know jack about Mookie-Dookie pizza or sugar-iced twisted bear claws...but the very best fried chicken within 80 miles of Academy Sports is at the highway 49 grocery store in Flora.
If you make this trip and buy a box, I guarantee you will not get home with all of it.
" but the very best fried chicken within 80 miles of Academy Sports is at the highway 49 grocery store in Flora. "
That's a topic for a new website.
We're blessed with so many "Hole in the Wall" fried chicken places.
But, 7:33 is correct.
I also had no clue Campbell’s had a location in Madison.
The owner should have realized that the advertising industry exists for a reason.
I ain't had one of them little square/cube sugar iced things since I busted uninvited into a wedding reception in Pearl four years ago. Where I'm gonna get one will somebody tell me? I forget whatchu call them things. Most of 'em is white.
