Scam alert?
Is there a scam going on down in Hattiesburg, the Coast, and Florida? Facebook is alight with messages alleging former Democrat operative Richard Buckman has engaged in some dealings that some claim are not exactly ethical. Dane Maxwell posted these messages on his Facebook page and gave permission to JJ to publish them. Mr. Maxwell is the President of CMV Investigations and was once a MDOT enforcement officer as well as a Chief of Staff for a Public Service Commissioner.

Washington _____ reporter Chico Harlan pondered whether Tunica County completely squandered its day in the sun when casinos boomed for nearly twenty years in that area in a story published in today's edition. His thesis is Tunica wasted a golden opportunity to lift itself out of poverty after Sixty Minutes showed Tunica to be one of the poorest areas in America in a 1985 story. Mr. Harlan reports:

Rankin Grand Jury moves to shut down Gold Coast of East Jackson.
Rankin County authorities claimed they had had enough of the free-wheeling and bootlegging Gold Coast and took steps to shut it down in January 1937. The Jackson Daily News blared "Rankin Opens Vice War With Arrests" as the grand jury issued indictments on several Gold Coast operators. The Gold Coast was an area of Rankin County that was bounded by the Pearl River and traversed by Casey Lane, Fanin Road, and Old Highway 49. Numerous juke joints, nightclubs, casinos, and other dens of iniquity populated what was known as East Jackson. It was a world of hard drinking, gambling, jukin', raunchy music, and violence.
No lessons to be learned here.

Byrd evicted after refusing to move out.
Hinds County Court Judge Larita Cooper-Stokes ordered the eviction of attorney Isaac Byrd from his home on 14 E. Hill Drive in Jackson in April. Bank of America filed suit against Mr. Byrd in July 2014. The bank foreclosed on the home on January 7, 2014 at a sale on the courthouse steps. Hinds County deputies and several moving vans appeared at the home on June 30.

History v. Heritage
Past issues of the Jackson Daily News yielded a few headlines that tell part of the story about Mississippi's racist past. It's no secret mob violence ruled Mississippi at times, as blacks were lynched by mobs, morals and civil rights be damned. However, it is one thing to be told about the lynchings and another to see them plastered on the front pages of the newspaper. Here are some headlines and articles from the past that are not dead and definitely not forgotten, at least by those who suffered for decades under the rule of Jim Crow and the mob. The Duck Hill lynching gained particular notoriety, as blowtorches were used to obtain confessions in ways that would have made a Sicilian proud. The German newspapers spared no effort in exploiting Mississippi's racism for its own propaganda, as seen below in one article.

Fatality on Bozeman Road in Madison
7:30 PM Update: Madison PD issued this update:
The persons involved in the fatality accident earlier today have been
identified. The deceased driver of the vehicle was identified as Amy
Irene James, age 34 of Richland, MS. A female passenger who was injured
was identified as Belinda White, age 57 of Pearl, MS. An earlier
release incorrectly reported a male passenger. The other passenger
injured in the accident was a 13 year-old female. Both passengers
remain at the University of MS Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.
Initial indications are that none of the persons involved were wearing
seat belts.

Mr. I GOT A RIGHT TO OPEN CARRY A GUN WHEREVER I WANT TO gets owned by a very professional police officer in this video. What our right-wing YouTube warrior was actually doing was openly carrying a .22 semi-auto version of an H&K MP-5 hoping for a confrontation with law enforcement, so he could shoot the video and then become an instant hero on YouTube. He didn't get what he wanted. Needless to say, he got owned by the cop.
Stion falling short.
The woes of Haley green projects continue. Watchdog.org reported that the Stion plant in Hattiesburg is falling well short of projections. Steve Wilson wrote:
Techdirt: Hood "bizarrely" blames Google
The techie website Techdirt published some interesting commentary on the fight between Google and Attorney General Jim Hood. Google is accusing Mr. Hood of being the sock puppet for the Motion Picture Association of America. Google is apparently not just content to beat Mr. Hood in court, it wants to expose what it considers to be a full-fledged conspiracy between the Attorney General and Hollywood to wage war against internet, i.e. Google. Recalling polio
I came across these old newspaper articles about past polio outbreaks in Mississippi. They were published in the 1930's. They give a better idea of what Mississippians faced before vaccines were available.
A dying Quarles accused Desmond Brown of burning him to death in 2012
A homeless Clay Quarles died of severe burns in Jackson in 2012 and accused Desmond Brown of killing him with hot coals. Quarles died two weeks after suffering severe burns to over 70% of his body. Brown has been the subject of much controversy this year as he falsely claimed to be an owner of a convenience store where a JPD officer was shot. Police reports obtained by JJ through a public records request show that police interviewed both the victim and suspect but no further action was taken on the case. Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber issued the following statement:
Where does Pat Nelson's money come from?
Campaign finance laws? Who needs campaign finance laws when no one enforces them? Representative Pat Nelson (R-Kuykendall) has reported receiving nearly $200,000 in contributions and never specified who donated the money. Mississippi law requires candidates to report the source of all contributions over $200. Mr. Nelson reported the following non-itemized amounts since 2012:

LSU survives the guillotine
I somehow forgot to post this but it is important to some. Ole Miss fans had reasons to celebrate for a short time recently as the Louisiana legislature recommended cutting LSU's budget 82%. Times have come a long way from the days when The Kingfish placed LSU on a pedestal and made it the largest university in the Southeast, 11th largest in the nation, and imported top faculty such as Robert Penn Warren. Violence apparently runs in the same circles of seventeen-year old Kenyatta Robinson. The girlfriend of the accused killer posted a street-fight video of herself on Facebook.
Pageant winner pleads guilty to drug dealing
Pageant winner Magrish Balasubramaniam pleaded guilty to possession with intent to sell a controlled substance in Madison County. He was caught last year with a large quantity of "synthetic LSD". The plea agreement states he is to be sentenced to twenty years in the custody of MDOC but thirteen years of the sentence is to be suspended. He is represented by attorney Dennis Sweet.
Starbucks raises prices after hiking miminum wage
Coffee prices are going down and many coffee shops are cutting their prices. However, Starbucks is instead raising its prices as it also gave a minimum wage increase earlier this year. The Wall Street Journal reported:

Rankin Sheriff beaten on Gold Coast
I am working on some posts this morning and am posting this 1939 American Mercury article about the Gold Coast of Rankin County as it is pretty entertaining and gives a straight shot of our history in 100-proof fashion. Well, entertaining until one gets to the part about the savage beating of the Sheriff. Meanwhile, the Governor tried to crack down and the Hedermans opposed the Governor for doing so. Governor sends troops into Rankin County
The Jackson Daily News reported on June 23 that the Governor sent 150 guardsmen into the Gold Coast of Rankin County armed with axes and guns to destroy illegal booze and gambling machines. The newspaper reported that "the finest of whiskies stood in puddles on the ground" after the raid. The daylight raid caught the nightclubs by surprise as they had no time to hide their illegal wares. The troops destroyed over $100,000 in merchandise.*

Ethan Thomas arrested for stalking a constable.
Our favorite psycho is back in the news again. Madison County constable Matt Shackelford pressed stalking charges against Raymond Ethan Thomas. His affidavit states that Mr. Thomas was parked in front of his house. Mr. Shackelford arrested Thomas in May for charges pressed by his wife. The couple are seeking a divorce in Madison County. Thomas was charged with witness intimidation and larceny-trespass after
he went onto his wife's property and took her two golden retrievers. He
is currently free on bond. Mrs. Thomas filed for divorce against Mr.
Thomas in March. Mr. Thomas has several past scrapes with the law.
Slipping through the cracks: our criminal justice system at work.
Flowood police arrested Roderick Carter early on February 13, 2015 for armed robbery after he and his girlfriend tried to rob a convenience store on Lakeland Drive. A Rankin County grand jury indicted him in April for three counts of armed robbery and three counts of a felon in possession of a firearm. He currently resides in the Rankin County jail as he was denied bond.
However, he was convicted of a felony in Hinds County in 2014 and received a suspended sentence of nine years in prison with one year to serve but was given credit for time served so he was released in 2014. Unfortunately, his probation has not been revoked and it appears under the new law (HB #585) passed last year, MDOC may not be able to revoke his probation.
