Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba announced his recommendation that the City Council award the new garbage contract to Richard's Disposal at a press conference today.
Highlights of the presser:
* JPD Chief Joseph Wade said JPD will hold a youth talent show on March 16 at the Jackson Convention Center. Auditions will be held. "Talent shows build character. They build confidence," said the JPD Chief. "We want to put these kids on a big stage to show what they can do," the Chief continued.
Captain Vance said the talent show will be on the third floor in the theatre room of the convention center from 6-8. Judges will be Rob Jay, Othor Cain of "Goons & Coons" fame, and Kayla Thompson. The good Captain said prizes will be awarded for First Place ($500), Second Place ($250), and Third Place ($100).
* Trash talk (27:00): Mayor Lumumba recommended the City Council award the new garbage contract to Richard's Disposal. He said he will negotiate the terms of the contract with the company.
Only Richard's Disposal and National Waste United submitted bids in response to the RFP. The RFP requires residents to get 96-gallon garbage carts from the provider.
The Mayor also said garbage collection rates will likely increase.

I'm shocked I tell you, SHOCKED.
How can Chowke hold onto things with all of the grease on his hands?
Stokes presser in 3, 2, 1...
Why is the Mayor obsessed with matching garbage carts?
The city council is too “busy” gettin’ juiced up and stoned from “elected officials meetings” to properly run a city council, therefore, the mayor of “the city that was formerly known as a great city” railroads these elected officials and tricks them into what he wants them to do. I’m just making a point here but the FBI needs to step in and all city employees need to take drug and alcohol tests. This is a joke and it’s about as bad as the Billage of Dolton, Illinois’ mayor. If you check her out you will see the direction our former great city is heading.
When Waste Management walks away, you know it is bad. They are masters at dealing with these shenanigans nation-wide, and somethings performing a few themselves.
Richard's grease gun is still working just fine-
Regarding the 96-gallon trash buggies that no one needs, cui bono?
Picket was a candidate for state senate last year. On his FB page there is a fundraiser ad indicating it was hosted by Socrates Garrett.
“The RFP requires residents to get 96-gallon garbage carts from the provider.”
Which the residents don’t seem to want.
Who drafted the RFP?
I guess we’ll see what the voters say at the next election. If Lumumba gets reelected, he’ll have a blank check.
This looks like and smells like shenanigans. You know what that means? Means Shad is about to go buck wild and arrest a bunch of elderly women in tshirts working at small towns in the sticks!
In the end the city of JackO will get Lumambad for 6 years. Remember the load that you got from a one mayor Harvey Johnson's left behind messes. Don't look know but it's happening again.
So. We have murders, armed robberies, breakins, drive by shootings...yea, a talent show will stop ALL of that.
Surprise, little chok recommended his garbage company. Raise your hand if you're surprised. And waited till the last minute. Again, raise your hand if surprised.
I am so glad Waste Management still handles so many other areas. One day, hopefully, they will return to the city of Jackson. After all these little brats are gone.
Little chok gonna negotiate between his garbage company and the city. Yea, that's about right, he represents Richard's.
@2:47 because Sista Rukia has to get paid somehow under the garbage contract. So carts it is!
I recommend that they hold a talent competition among the garbage contractors. This will build character and result in better performance.
Not surprised that Waste Management simply cannot put up with the City's crap any longer. Talk about a choice between the lesser of two evils.
The 96-gal carts will be purchased from a Detroit company Can you say kickbacks to Rukia, et al? You read it here first.
Waste Management will still handle Madison's garbage, right?
Then I don't care what happens in Jackson.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!!!
New Orleans crapped out Richards and Jackson is licking up the floor!
You've been living under a rock if you thought this garbage contract would go to any other vendor over Richard's.
SURPRISE! The little dick-tator strikes again!
What does Richards have on this man? KF, if anyone can find out, it is you!
And no one wants the damn 96 gal can. My little neighbors cannot manage it.
Very interesting about a proposal from a no-longer existent company. Do you suppose WM proposal conveniently got lost?
For the record, I have no problem with the Richards guys on the street. They are hard working and very courteous, and would probably be hired by whichever company gets the contract. But the manner in which this had been handled by this mayor throughout is criminal!
Surprise, surprise, surprise!Richards wins by default. Given the city's history, no reputable company would likely submit a bid. Will Richards still sue, or will they agree to drop their lawsuit when granted the long term contract? Will the city council fold and acquiesce to the mayor's orchestrated result given the obvious lack of alternative vendors? Transparency, honor and integrity are fading deeper and deeper into the abyss.
Of course Chockwe Selects Richard Disposal. How else is he supposed to get his kick backs?
The sista will be selling 96 gallon trash cans in 3, 2, 1….
Is there anyone who didn't already know who would get the contract? Look at all of the time and money that has been wasted just to get a third world garbage collector for a third world city. Jackson deserves what they will get. A little more garbage on the street will not make much difference.
Got them hooks in deep and tight don't they.
Kingfish: Serious Question. Is there an app I can buy from you that will flag all threads about Jackistan's mayor and keep them from appearing on my "Home Menu". If not, you can make a hundred thousand bucks having one implemented.
my question becomes, to require citizens to purchase a specific container from one specific vendor b/c that is the terms of the contract?
It would seem, that for something like that to fly, it would have to become municipal code / ordinance passed.
I'm sorry, while I do actually use a 96 gallon cart that can be lifted by a standard lift on a garbage truck, I also realize that there simply are people that can not handle that container.
I don't see how this can be forced on a property owner w/o a ordinance in place?
Chokeway is shoving it down the city councils throat! 😂😂
Exactly 3:23
It darn sure 'aint because Chuck wants carts to be aesthetically pleasing.
It's always to grease the palms of his "supporters" and get a kick back.
Why don't that let the taxpayers vote on who they want? Richard needs to hit the road jack, never come back no more no more hit the road jack. Waste Management was the best always on time. Their operations was very professional.

Gravy train recipients- company the manufactures the cans; the warehouse where cans are stored, the can delivery company, the repair/replace contractor, and the law firm(s) that bring and defend cases of the traffic accidents, damage to cars, injuries trying lug those up and down Jackson’s hills.
3:12 for the win today.
Checkmate! The only way to beat this charlatan is at the ballot box. As long as Jacksonians are willing to let the dumbest among them carry elections, the office of mayor is too powerful.
3:12 gets it. Shad postures and is fully aware of things in Rankin county. Crickets
Waste Management wants no part of this train wreck. Just like JXN Water, they know that if by chance they were the lowest and best and were selected, the Lumumba brigade would sabotage them like the water situation. They can make more and better money servicing the ‘burbs and not put up with their BS. At some point you cut your losses, throw your hands up, and say FTS and watch it burn to the ground.
I am 70 years old. I don't live in a neighborhood. My house is WAY off the highway from where the garbage is picked up. I'll have to leave the damn cart on the highway and it is going to look very trashy. Who replaces it when it gets hit by a car or it gets stolen? City Council DO SOMETHNG!!!!!!
Rates going up? Currently $37.00.
Hey Lil Chokeà . Fk yo bigass 96gal rolling mini-dumpsters. Two of us at my ace put out 16 to 25 gal of trash twice a week, we have two rugged, permanent, flat topped "Brute" cans that are easy to use and to fit into our garage.
BTW, Lil Choke, you noticed that you, personally fit in one those hideous things? Maybe hide in there to escape the Pledge of Allegiance you so disdain.
City council don't have any power to do anything other than reject this contract and leave us with no trash pickup. AGAIN. The mayor knows it and he is enjoying sticking it to the council AND to the few citizens remaining who still pay for trash pickup in Jackson.
I live in South Jackson. I have a 100+ yard long gravel driveway on a hill. I already have TWO 96 gallon carts. I will not purchase another. Carts sit along the roads every day of the week due to the HInds County contract that requires carts of rural residents. Trash litters the roadways. Some is thrown out by littering SOBs, other trash trickles out of Richards garbage trucks as they make their rounds.
This is a "long term" contract, for how long? Richards has a horrible track record. They'll probably stop making much effort after the next mayoral election. At that point we'll be stuck with a non-performing provider and a contract we can't get out of. City council take note: no long term contract!
The money laundering must be happening in Detroit. This mayor should be in jail for what he's done to this city!
The Mayor and Richard’s are sitting in Paris tonight sipping champagne.
Where are the damn forensic auditors on this? Will no one ever question this?
Rate increase! Why??? Went to $37/month because a large number were not paying (like water bills). Don’t know why the council would vote for increase with a bunch not paying. But that didn’t stop them before. The City is so screwed up!!! And that’s all on the mayor!
Drug tests for the mayor and all city council.
If you live within the City of Jackson or in Hinds County, don't bother voting. Your vote will not count!
This is once again proof of the corruption within those two entities. How insane of this administration to think its citizens are so ignorant. And to top it off the Mayor has the audacity to stand there and say "garbage rates will go up" and "residents are expected to purchase the 96 gallon carts".
Councilman Stokes said it best "the Mayor needs to stop smokin' that dope"
I foresee a lot of stolen trash cans once Jackson residents are told they have to buy them
Did Waste Management "no bid" or were they not invited to bid? Isn't the city government supposed to get 3 viable bids for any contract whenever possible?
Many Jackistan residents don't pay their water bills and Chowke believes that these same scofflaws/freeloaders will buy 96-gal carts? Chowke, "stop smoking that dope."
Yogi Berra said it best, it's déjà vu all over, again. Or would this best be likened to Bill Murray in the film "Ground Hog Day"?
The only "negotiations" that will take place between Chowke and Richards will be to determine how much is kicked back. Right?
When Waste Management walks away be glad. Some of you really are blind to their history.
I would give anything to be the fly on the wall during Chowke's secret negotiations with Richards.
Wish the Feds would step in and remove Mayor.
Lumumba, sly like a fox? He will emerge from the "negotiations" stating he got Richards to drop their pending lawsuit, therefore saving the city money. In the next breath (he's already prepared Jackson citizens for this), he will announce higher prices. Ironically, the increase will likely compensate Richards for "agreeing" to stop legal action. He will assert that he is the city's savior, having brokered a great deal; while adamantly stating "I'm not willing to write anybody a blank check".
He just did, and the council has been left impotent, the citizens screwed.
COJ residents oddly seem to only be able to spot political trash in hindsight.
And even with that knowledge they vote for an almost exact replica of the last guy.
They cheer for the guy in office blindly, and then let the next guy use his predecessor's failures as excuses. Odd.
March 5, 2024 at 9:25 AM, why don't you give us a synopsis of Waste Management's history.
How can this mayor not be ashamed that on his watch, the city cannot even let a simple garbage contract. Most cities do this in the space of a few weeks at most, and yet it's been years for the city of Jackson. And based on what I see, it will continue for years to come. His oversight of the water system has been a trainwreck, and yet when others outside Jackson drop in to rescue the water system and get it working he trots out the "they are trying to take over a black city" guff. It's truly amazing to watch.
Progressive speak might call Waste Management sitting this out as “ red lining” BS….it is actually good business tactics….
Follow the carts.
