It appears our favorite drug dealer, John Dowdy, III, is getting some special treatment at MDOC. While other drug dealers get to enjoy the luxuries of prison life at MDOC, Third gets to hang out at a local county jail.
A Madison County grand jury indicted Dowdy in September 2022 for aggravated trafficking in controlled substances, possession of meth with intent to distribute, conspiracy to distribute MDMA, possession of alprazolam with intent to distribute, conspiracy to distribute alprazolam, and possession of tetrahydrocannabol. The indictment alleges Dowdy was caught with 200 grams of MDMA, between 40 and 2,500 dosage units of alprazolam. and between 10 and 30 grams of tetrahydrocannabol.Circuit Judge Judge Brad Mills sentenced Trey John Dowdy, III to serve 30 years in prison for possessing between ten and thirty grams of MDMA with intent to distribute on August 1, 2023.
This is where the story should end but we are talking about the Dowdys. Dowdy's father is former MBN Director John Dowdy. The elder Dowdy is an Assistant District Attorney in Pike County.
Dowdy was supposed to serve his sentence in the custody of MDOC. However, the elder Dowdy begged the Court to show mercy and place his son in a trusty program at a county jail at an April 2023 hearing. The former director claimed he put many people in prison as MBN Director and in his current job as a Pike County prosecutor. A sobbing Dowdy said he was fearful for his son's life. Dowdy's attorney repeated the plea at his sentencing on August 1, 2023. Earlier post.
Judge Mills denied the request but Dowdy and his lawyer went to work on MDOC. MDOC asked Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker to keep Dowdy in his jail as a trusty.
Here is where things get interesting. JJ asked both MDOC and Sheriff Tucker for copies of all correspondence regarding Dowdy the Younger. Sheriff Tucker provided two pages of emails. He said there was not more because most of the affair was handled over the phone.
The correspondence posted below makes it appear Burl Cain was involved in the decision to keep Dowdy out of an MDOC prison and housed at a county jail.
JJ filed the same public records request with MDOC. Check out what MDOC wanted for the records:
Kingfish note: Few readers will probably be surprised at the special treatment for the drug dealing Dowdy. Dowdy and his boss, Marshall Fisher, were typical bullies as they pushed a "lock 'em up and throw away the key" approach to drugs. Yet when 3's ass was on the line in Madison County Circuit Court, Fisher and Dowdy were sitting right there in the courtroom in support of Dowdy's son. This is just one more chapter in the book that is Dowdy's repeated attempts throughout his career to game the system.

Tucker is using him, he ain’t using Tucker. It’s good to see any inmate used for value.
State inmates are housed in county jails all over the state as part of the trusty program. Why is this even a story?
There are several other MDOC prisoners at Canton. However, they seem to be all parole violations or contempt of court. Probably that means failure to appear for something. Only one where someone is servicing an actual sentence at the jail.
Of course, MDOC still has not picked up Todd Mardis from the Rankin County jail.
Agree with 10:15. It happens all over the State/Country. This is nothing new. I have had several deserving clients not get into the "Trustee" program and several that did. There are plenty of drug dealers that wouldn't get into that program even if Dowdy wasn't in the program. Gaming the system....isn't that the standard in MS? I mean show me the list of indigent people that don't need a $5 million volleyball court! Bet you can't
Why is this even a story?
Why does it even matter to you?
I hope Tucker is using him to assist in cleaning up drugs in our communities. Fentanyl is #1 killer in my book; but. I have never smoked a cigaret much less weed, so I may be wrong on this. As far as price while working for other state agencies it used to be $20 - $25 per hour plus 20 cents per copy. Heck law firms would try to bring in their runner while copying entire rolling files that cost $10;000 without installation when they were working on big environmental cases. I don’t know if they still allow that or not because then files would go missing. Check with their FOIA officer before you pay this.
I realize county jails house inmates, but in this case it is because of the father and his position this is happening. The inmate was sentenced to 30 yrs, not 18 months. Someone needs to ask his crying old man how often he let another drug dealer who had a crying father get the same treatment?
Todd Mardis will never be housed anywhere else but the Rankin County Jail. There he is allowed privileges he cannot receive at an MDOC facility. I am betting he was assured of that before taking his guilty plea.
Agree about Todd. The wealthy/connected never see real MDOC time.
Its disgusting. And predictable.
What did OJ say?
I think it was something like, "Life is like a shirt sandwich. The more bread you have, the less shit you get."
Evidently political influence is just like bread in the bank. The more you got, the less shit you get."
Not all criminals at MDOC are prisoners.
about a year ago turned down a small road that originated in the rankin county tax assessors office on the west side of the parking lot.
the road took me around to the backside, just north of the main rankin county jail.
i was look for the rankin county road department. as soon as i pulled up had several trusties and a deputy approach me saying ''who are you? what are you doing here?''
i felt like i had just stumbled into a top secret military base.
i asked where was rankin road department and they said they dint know. i then asked what that big building to my right was and one trustee said ''housing unit''.
i have later learned from a reliable source that the building i refer to is a very large dormitory where trustees live and the trustees are allowed to come and go at will.
the building looks like something you would see on a jr college campus. it doesn't look like a jail or a prison.
its no wonder the trustees and sheriff don't want anyone to know what it is.
looks like a pretty easy place to do time.
as usual, dont take my word for it......take that little drive i described and pretend you are lost and see it for yourself and experience a little russian style KGB secrecy from whoever may be hanging around.
this is more than likely where that clown todd m. will be going and I'm sure the sheriff in madison co. will have a similar set up for his ''preferred guests'' such as the dope dealing punk dowdy.
So if this is just business-as-usual, how many inmates have had the Commissioner of MDOC personally and directly intervene on their behalf, in the last 10 years??
I’m not a fan of the dad, but the son wouldn’t last ten minutes in a state facility full of people his dad put away. To me, Mardis is the one who should be in the worst prison we have. He is being protected because of his connections. That’s evil. The Dowdy boy is being protected because of something his dad did. Big difference. .
Interesting. Because of his last name, I would think he would be a target in MDOC prison. Only safe thing would be solitary confinement. On the other hand, 30 year sentence is serious, so you wouldn't think Madison as a trusty.
Won't be thirty. Probably a 25 percent crime.
More proof of the tiered, miss named, justice system. That equality under the law stuff, hahaha, we didn't mean it like that.

As a Southerner, I'm not a fan of the word, 'Dad' - particularly as a substitute term for the male parent. But IN THIS CASE, you chose the right word. Pronounced by Madison County White Trash, the word is close to the sound buzzards make, when fighting over roadkill. And that's about right: perfectly descriptive, when you're talking about the persons under discussion.
Kingfish are you saying mardis will remain in rankin county jail or MDOC hasn’t transferred him yet? Wouldn’t the great honest sheriff Bailey have some knowledge of this.
He said he is waiting for MDOC to come get him. MDOC picked up several prisoners two weeks ago but has not yet picked up Mardis. There is no arrangement to keep him there, the Sheriff said.
MDOC taking its sweet time to pick up convicted prisoners is a common complaint I hear from Sheriffs.
There is no limit to the number of adjectives and nouns that apply to Randall Tucker. He doesn't give a shit as this is his last term of 'service'.
"We will be glad to house this offender...call on me any time, Bro!"
First thing you know, the boy will be allowed to drive around in an S.O. vehicle, hit Popeye's drive thru and cruise the Trace.
Tucker has always been for sale.
his daddy, john ''howdy doody'' dowdy pretended to be a real badass when he worked for the u s attorneys office in jackson and then a super badass when he was appointed to run MBN.
Like everything else in this chicken manure state he's just one more fake.
"Tucker is using him, he ain’t using Tucker. It’s good to see any inmate used for value."
Sure thing, Luther. State the value the county is getting out of this guy. Does dad pick him up on weekends?
Ed Cates was able to stay in the Canton jail if I remember correctly. I wonder if they ever figured out who was buried in Ed's grave.
