Waaaaaah!

The Jackson City Council voted unanimously to cut Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba's budget $264,000 yesterday as his Chief of Staff protested in vain.

The Council wanted to fund an additional Municipal Court judge, public defender, and an attorney for the Planning and Development department.  How does one pay for such when the budgets are tight? Ward 1 Councilman Ashby Foote suggested cutting $264,000 from the Mayor's budget of $1.1 million.  There was no debate among the Council members.

However, a haggard Chief of Staff Dr. Safiyah Omari voiced her outrage, accusing the Council of cutting the Mayor's budget every year while increasing its own.  She demanded the Council explain why it was cutting the Mayor's budget yet no Council members accepted her challenge.

Kingfish note: Hmmm..... Jackson has both a Chief of Staff and a Chief Administrative Officer.  Why not cut one of the positions.  Also, Dr. Omari, perhaps it was not a good idea for your people to tell Councilwoman Lee that y'all were going to run Sista Rukia at her in two years after she supported Justis Gibbs.  How is that threatening and bullying working out for the team?

Dr. Omari really worries me. She seems to call a lot of the shots. I think Chokwe is just the mouthpiece for her agenda. What her agenda is I don't know and that is what worries me.

PhD Omari is a total fool. Honestly she has a position where she simply lives off the taxpayers and does nothing but stir a hornets nest. Total waste

I think I may have died or I'm dreaming. Lately, too many logical things are happening with the City of Jackson and it's just too damned good to be true it seems.

These PhD types, I never call them “Doctor” for they simply don’t deserve it. They aren’t healers; they cause wounds. I remain polite, of course, but simply call them “Mister” or “Miss.” It makes their heads boil, too.

Dr. Omari is a Civil Rights Icon and I recommend you shameless bigots educate yourself before you post your hateful comments.

Note to Kingfish: You will never have a respectable blog if you do not curb the hateful rhetoric.

So sorry SOmari. Not.

Councilman Banks --- obviously you didn't understand. The PhD Doctor didn't just 'object', she STRENUOUSLY objected.

Anonymous said...

There they go with that word "demand" again

Dr. O is a family friend and advisor from daddy Lumumba. I'm sure she is a critical influence on Antard and his sister's actions. Dr. O has no other qualifications to be in her position than just being a long-time part of the inner circle.

"Dr." Omari is a legend.

In her own mind.

Omari self-condemns @ 4:45 saying they (Lumumba's office) has been trying to be civil, her word, during budget negotiations.

@5:58 - You had me there for a minute! Good one. GOOD ONE!

@5:58pm,

Miss Omari, is that you commenting on this blog again :)

THANK YOU CITY COUNCIL.

It's a good first step, but there is a LOT more cutting to be done. NO MORE TAX INCREASES until the city gets wasteful and unnecessary spending under control!! The fastest shrinking city in the county doesn't need the same number of employees (or buildings, or schools, or ________) that it did when it was far larger. Cuts must be made!

5:58 must be a troll, or a family member of "Dr. Omari". If she doesn't want to be called a fool, she should stop grabbing the damn microphone and making herself look like one. We didn't elect her to shit, and we're sick of hearing her shit!

I didn't think there was any way I could ever vote for Lee after seeing how she shamelessly backed the garbage contract debacle/corruption, but if Rukia Lumumba is her opponent in the primary, I will quickly do just that!

Cut the mayor's salary.

Anonymous said...

In the scope of things, is this really a big deal, executives always want a bigger budget, does it really matter? They always have leverage to achieve their goals in my experience . This is a drop in the bucket worth fighting for, but just a paragraph in the big story.

Time to cut Lumumba's Pay said...

With the number and budgetary size of responsibilities now significantly reduced, the Council should also reduce the half-Mayor's salary.

Anonymous said...

Kingfish, budget cut was 15% therefore the proposed FY budget had to be in the range of $1.7x million dollars.

Anonymous said...

Kingfish - This has really been a good week for Jackson. Chockway sister lost to a great and outstanding opponent. The city curved wasteful spending.

I can almost hear moving vans headed back to Jackson.

Anonymous said...

The City Council has the power of the budget. They control the purse. This is the leverage they have always had....BUT they must stick together. This is GREAT news and they need to stay on this empty suit.

Anonymous said...

While none of the council members responded to Omari’s question, she should not be surprised. The mayor doesn’t need the money to continue his complete inability to be an effective mayor. Frankly, the less funding he has, the better. The silence would seem to indicate the council has a good deal of contempt for the mayor and no confidence in his leadership, with good reason.

Anonymous said...

Both Grizzell and Lee vote in the affirmative to the cut.

This is starting to feel like late in Harvey Johnson's second term where the fatigue was palpable and the resolve for someone else clearly on the wind. And Harvey, for all his shortcomings, was a far superior Mayor than the Mayor Incompetence currently occupying the office.

Some good candidates step up in 2025, he's done. Gibbs proved the kids are big talking empty suits.

Anonymous said...

You really think the mayor didn’t ask for more than he needed ? You have no idea how government works!

@5:58
You’re downright hilarious. You post on a blog you claim isn’t credible! Too funny. Also Miss Omari is about as dumb as a rock. Talk about a racist person she could look at the administration she’s with.

Anonymous said...

5:58, you need to be able to distinguish between “hateful rhetoric” and the truth, which can sometimes hurt. No matter what Dr. Omari has done in the past to earn the label of civil rights icon, she made a terrible mistake by affiliating with a totally incompetent mayor who has inflicted major damage to Mississippi’s capital city. Her part in that pretty much negates anything else she’s accomplished.

KF does not have to have your respect to be a “respectable blog”. He does have mine, though.

Anonymous said...

558 - can you enlighten us om some her civil rights accomplishments?

Cut the entourage and bodyguards of the Mayor or cut the Police Officers budget( officers used as bodyguards) that are used for the Mayor’s security detail!

This shit ain’t rocket science! Don’t be afraid to cut the unnecessary shigity! Yea you are going to piss off someone why not the Mayors office!

Ain’t he for the people!!!

Mayor Lumumba continues to alienate people with his narcissistic, toxic brand of “leadership”. The writing is on the wall. Every single politician or political power broker in the MS black community will oppose this idiot going forward. Benny Thompson will ensure he is defeated next election cycle. It is actually quite fascinating to watch this lying, arrogant narcissist continue to flail around and sink lower and lower into a muddled pile of incompetence and ineptitude.

@ 5:38, don’t talk down to me. I have a problem with people like you talking down and dressing down people who make honest opinions. She “bought” a phd. Didn’t earn it. She probably got it from one of those colleges that believes in Marxism and hands them out with the agreement they will continue the struggle. It should be a law that anyone outside of the medical profession can be called a doctor. I said my piece. Thank you for allowing me to comment.

@11:24
I’m not sure why you continue to refer to Detroit. I guess the white mayor of Detroit ran these people down here so he didn’t have to deal with them. You’ve obviously not been to Detroit in about 10 yrs or so. Dan Gibson poured in 100s of millions in development in that city and it’s doing well. Went to comerica park to watch the tigers last week and then walked to Greek town and had a nice dinner and it’s super clean. I usually frequent the hockeytown but they had a private show that night. Quit talking about Detroit. It has no relation here.

@8:39 AM
Who are you even replying too? How can anyone take you seriously? 🤣

Starting to have some optimism:
Water will be fixed and finally in good hands
Capitol police doing great work and CCID will be expanded next summer
Voters finally spoke up: Justis over Lumumba, Tyree over Crisler, David Archie out, Blount over Pickett, etc
City council standing up to the mayor
2025 might be the day Jackson finally is on the upswing but the tide is starting to turn….

This Omari lady is there to be just what she is, an "icon". An icon to remind the radical socialists nationwide that Jackson remains in the fold and Chokwe is still one of the standard bearers for their radical agendas. She remains a reminder to the citizens of Jackson that you are still part of a radical experiment. A failing experiment.

Anonymous said...

8:51. spot on about Detroit. it's a very different place than 10 years ago. Jackson could have the same improvement, if only the state governor would give two craps about it and have the state take it over instead of waiting for the feds. (example: water, sewer)

Anonymous said...

Do my ears deceive me? A dysfunctional administration will not be rewarded with more money? Has the Jackson Miss. city council actually realized that raising taxes on an already overburdened shrinking tax base might be a bad idea? An acutal Republican budget cut? Signs and Wonders!

Anonymous said...

Oh, dear! I went to " one of those colleges".

I seldom get to finish a sentence at all much less talk down to someone. And, offering a solution to a problem is seen as " bossy" and/or "bitchy". The " keep her barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen" crowd has never gone away and a few, just grudgingly accepted women ...you know, like the KKK put on suits.

Somehow politely pointing out misinformation gets me accused of "talking down" and suggests they " don't get the news". I'm just trying to politely give actual facts and point to where the evidence can be found. I want to spare them from telling others something that is not just inaccurate but impossible. THAT will make someone assume you aren't very bright when you've just been too busy to verify the information you believed. Even a good source isn't right all the time...no one is.

A recent example was when I reminded someone that the attempt to corrupt voting in MS was when a GOP elected official eliminated 5000 voters from the roles only because they were Democrats. It was a stupid move and she was caught just like all other voters who try get caught these days. It's computers that make sure your ballot is yours. Paper ballots are far easier to toss or invent. I just asked they looked up all the examples of proven voter fraud by a party zealot to see how that happened and which party was guilty.

It's not the 1960s when dead people voted in Chicago. That can't happen now. Computers can quickly compare a voter roll to a list of the deceased. We have to get death certificates now and guess where you get extra ones?

So yeah, if you are so blindly loyal that you won't just use that which you actually have done, maybe I oversimply my explanations. I could just keep asking you questions...tried that and you just get mad and never reply. Is that talking down to?

Gee, I think before getting angry or upset, I ought to know if what has the potential to do that is true. It's a preventative measure so my energy is well used. I want good things for people I like. But, I'm beginning to think some of you are just troublemakers or incredibly mean and insecure.

Anonymous said...

Since others don't read...
The story said the city council added positions into their budget and cut the city's budget to pay for it.
So you think adding a municipal court judge, public defender and another lawyer for the council is better than using that money for oh, fixing potholes or a sewer leak?

If your politics are driven by the personal appeal instead of policy ideas, you are hurting yourself. If all you can do is attack someone personally, and not cite the behavior or flaws in the proposal, it speaks ill of you.

I agree that this person could not control her anger and became rude. The mayor should have someone with more self control deal with the council. But, totally lost in the comments is that YOUR MONEY IS STILL BEING SPENT.NOTHING CHANGED.NO EXPLANATION FROM EITHER THE CITY OR COUNCIL IN WHY THE INCREASE WAS NEEDED in this article. What if the city's request was for the new police chief to improve the department?

This is why you should dislike this woman and let's cheer the city has less money to deal with problems cause we don't like the mayor. Let's punish everyone in Jackson as if he got all the vote or that everyone even voted.

Now that tells me more about the commenters. Just mean and insecure

The connection to Detroit is Chockwe I, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, and the New Afrika Republic. I believe some of the old guard is still there and conducting business on behalf of The Cause, which is Black Nationalism.

Anonymous said...

September 2, 2023 at 8:51 AM, maybe you should do a little historical research on Edwin Finley Taliaferro, and the Republic of New Africa. That may help you understand the Detroit references. Contrary to common belief, history goes back more than 30 years ago.

“So you think adding a municipal court judge, public defender and another lawyer for the council is better than using that money for oh, fixing potholes or a sewer leak?”

No, I think they should cut the mayor's administrative personnel enough to do all of the above.

Eric Stratton said...

11:34, I also read and with all due respect something has changed. The city council is stripping funds from a bloated overstaffed mayors office where it only benefits one person (the mayor) and has earmarked it for three positions that will benefit all of the citizens of Jackson. I’m pleased to see the council making those type decisions.

Anonymous said...

11:34 Your first paragraph is both instructive and deceptive. True enough the council decided to prioritize the city's municipal court shortcomings at the expense of the mayor's budget. The mayor does not have to handle sewer issues or potholes outside the council's ability to budget for public works. The council simply and firmly made a decision to prioritize the money they spend for Jackson, not "for the council". It's a damn good sign for Jackson.

Anonymous said...

Dr. Omari does not live in the City of Jackson.

Anonymous said...

11:34 AM, the money was taken from the mayor's budget. It probably means the mayor does not get to take as many trips to other cities to try and bullshit them.

Anonymous said...

11:34 - Those are all different buckets of money - you have no idea how a city budget works. Also, if we had a competent mayor, he would be at these meetings himself and he would not need someone to "deal with the counsil". This isn't the white house where he requires someone like that worthless KJP to do the talking for him. Part of the outrage is that he's nowhere to be found when it's time to start discussing city business. As for the rest of your post, the title says it all - WAAHHHHH.

@5:40PM, I’ve seen firsthand how some people get these advanced degrees. They do it while they’re on another job, all kicked back, feet propped up on their desks, working on that online degree so they can get paid more to do nothing on the next rung of the ladder. They are some of the laziest people I have ever seen in the workforce.

Civil rights hero? What exactly has she done on those grounds? She is a left-wing version of a Neo-confederate, a secessionist. She is also the real Mayor of Jackson. She runs everything. Just remember, a year ago she chewed out the Jackson legislative delegation because some of them dared to ask the state for help when Jackson lost water.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
