Throwback Thursday

Here is a blast from the past.  JJ posted this video five years ago. WAPT was cleaning out the vault and came across this old color video of Jackson.  WAPT provided it to Downtown Jackson Partners, who posted it on Youtube. Really interesting stuff.

It must be pointed out that while the film shows progress a'plenty, there was a large segment of the population that was kept out as segregation was in full force at the time.

It's pretty amazing, but Jackson was well on it's way to develop like Atlanta, Birmingham, Dallas, and the rest, BUT years later the leadership would decide that Jackson would never join the "new South" if it meant abandoning it's most cherished institution. It didn't and Jackson got left behind. Eventually the money abandoned the city and we now have socialists trying to spread the misery. Jackson came close, but missed out.

Oh, the same of it all! We missed the joy of being a slum stretching from Meridian to Vicksburg.

Thanks Kingfish.

I really enjoyed watching that.

A must watch for those who don't remember how great Jackson once was and the potential we had to continue to grow and be a major southern city. Now we are nothing more than than largest slum in the south. Little Detroit would be a more fitting for Jackson these days. Hopefully we will turn the corner one day soon because if we don't all will be lost forever. A city cannot survive when it has more residents on welfare than are working.

8:19 Sorry, but I do remember and Jackson did have great potential but was never great. No city was great when it did everything for half its citizens and nothing more than cheat and terrorize the other half. Bad choices lead
to bad results. A good reminder.

P.S. You might be surprised to know how many in Jackson are working AND are on welfare.

Great historical video of Jackson! The main purpose of this video was to inform current occupants (non-property owners) of Jackson that back in the day...

1) The city invested in public infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, curbs, and so forth. Today, investing in infrastructure is like pulling teeth and is a rare occurrence, except during an election year. You can't get ad valorem taxes from residents whom do not own the land or house they live in. Please, don't give us that crap about your landlord paying property taxes on your behalf. Do you not realize the number of rental properties including apartment buildings in Jackson that were sold via tax sale due to landlords collecting rent money from tenants but not paying property taxes to Hinds Co? Ask those evicted tenants.

2) The city invested in public safety and security. Today, the city is crime ridden and a significant number of the police force is on the payroll of the criminals, allegedly. Riding clean around Jacktown is not doing your job.

3) Residential home builders voluntarily constructed houses in the center of town for the city's upper class and upper middle class residents. Today, with the assistance of low-income tax credits and other forms of tax payers dollars, builders/developers disproportionately build low income rental housing downtown and the city center. It's not worth risking or wasting private dollars for said projects. The city center is concentrated with poor and low income residents as well as brownfield land, ghettos, slums, you name it. Don't even think about building houses for families with household incomes at $70,000 and above or for white collared workers in the city center. The locals will surely scream gentrification and fight any housing and commercial project proposed. Thus, the cycle of poverty and disinvestment continue.

4) The city had a pretty nice library and bustling downtown commercial district. Today, no words. Please get rid of DJP! The organization is part of the problem, not the solution for the taxpayers of Jackson. Jackson needs billions of private money and investments in order to get back on its feet. Government/public money alone will not save Jackson.

5) The attendants at the zoo were having a good time and behaving themselves. The animals seemed healthy and active. No feral dogs in sight. Today, the zoo is a disinvested wasteland and so is the area surrounding the zoo. Faith without works is dead. If you, the citizens, do not invest in yourself or Jackson, do not expect Jackson to invest in you. Stop being reactive and become proactive about investing.

6) Employment-Yes to the days when black men worked their butts off by any means necessary to provide a good living and food for their wives and children. Today, single parent households, baby mama, absentee fathers, gangs, thug life, poverty, drugs, mental health issues, inferiority complex, welfare dependence, victim hood, antisocial behavior, self hatred, etc. Thanks New Deal, and I'm not talking about the grocery store. On another note, let's give a clap to The Great Society, it definitely eliminated poverty and racial injustice in Jackson. Give me a break, a tax break and a Kit Kat!

7)Public Education in 2018 Jackson- Let's not go there. Some Americans are content with attending a rated F school district and being at the bottom of the economic and social ladder. Don't blame your zip code or the educated capitalist who owns the business in your neighborhood for your inability to compete in a capitalistic society. Don't talk about saving JPS, be about it!

8)Public Transportation in 2018 Jackson- Thank God for Uber and Lyft!

The City's current condition is a result of the dysfunctional mental condition (mindset and attitude) of the people of Jackson.

You need to take some medicine man.

If things are so bad in your world that you have to type that during Thanksgiving....we’ll go ahead and shoot yourself.

@ 10:21 AM I posted this while standing in line waiting for Target to open to do my Black Friday shopping.

Pretty sad that Jackson looked more like a city 80 years ago than it does today.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
