Supreme Court decision? What Supreme Court decision.

Eric Holder just announced he is going to try and reimpose "pre-clearance" on Texas. The New York Times just reported:

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced on Thursday that the Justice Department would ask a court to require Texas to get permission from the federal government before making voting changes in that state for the next decade. The move opens a new chapter in the political struggle over election rules after the Supreme Court struck down a portion of the Voting Rights Act last month.

In prepared remarks for a speech before the National Urban League in Philadelphia, Mr. Holder also indicated that the court motion — expected to be filed later on Thursday — is most likely just an opening salvo in a new Obama administration strategy to try to reimpose “preclearance” requirements in parts of the country that have a history of discriminating against minority voters....

“This is the department’s first action to protect voting rights following the Shelby County decision, but it will not be our last,” Mr. Holder said. “Even as Congress considers updates to the Voting Rights Act in light of the court’s ruling, we plan, in the meantime, to fully utilize the law’s remaining sections to subject states to preclearance as necessary. My colleagues and I are determined to use every tool at our disposal to stand against such discrimination wherever it is found.”  Article

Don't mess with Texas.

It is still illegal under the VRA to create legal barriers, like Texas is doing, with the intent of making it difficult for our citizens to vote. My understanding of the effect of the Shelby County case is that the burden is now on the government to prove their allegations as opposed to the burden's being on the state to prove their intent is not to create barriers to voting.

No well intentioned person wants American citizens to be disenfranchised, right?

Meanwhile, Bennie Thompson was the only member of our Congressional delegation who voted to stop the NSA from spying on Mississippians.

Texas should fight to the last man to keep their right to prevent Somalian nationals from being bussed to the polls in exchage for a free "Forward" t-shirt. In more local news, everyone who isnt in a corn syrup haze needs to call Gregg Harper and ask why he sided with the White House opinion toward our 4th amendment (or lack thereof)....RINO....fascist...state worshipper...totalitarian...red coat.Seriously? Bennie Commie Thompson was the only Ms rep that voted for the Amash-Conyers..really?

Ignoring that it's Eric Holder doing it for a second, I actually think this approach would be better than someone trying to rewrite Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act. Jurisdictions should be subject to pre-clearance when they are found by a court to be trying to violate the VRA -- if it's done fairly without regard to the race of the violators.

I've got no problem with a court imposing pre-clearance on Noxubee County, Texas, the City of Canton, or any other jurisdiction as a result of a court case finding voter intimidation or fraud.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

Daily Caller Reports:

Public attitudes about race relations have plummeted since the historic election of white African-American President Barack Obama, according to a new poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal.

Only 52 percent of whites and 38 percent of blacks have a favorable opinion of race relations in the country, according to the poll, which has tracked race relations since 1994 and was conducted in mid-July by Hart Research Associations and Public Opinion Strategies.

That’s a sharp drop from the beginning of Obama’s first term, when 79 percent of whites and 63 percent of blacks held a favorable view of American race relations.

Negative views on race relations have also increased substantially. According to the poll, 45 percent of whites and 58 percent African-Americans now believe race relations are very or fairly bad, compared with 2009, when only 20 percent of whites and 30 percent of blacks held an unfavorable view.

Harper is a lost cause. He's got his nose buried so far up Boehner's ass in order to curry favor and a leadership job that he's completely blown off the voters of the 3rd. Harper will vote for amnesty too should it make it to the floor.

It was a bipartisan. vote.

Republican: Ayes - 94, Noes - 134
Democratic: Ayes - 111, Noes - 83

Go take a shower in the new fountain downtown LOSER @ 9:55.

Greg Harper needs a good challenger in the next election. He has been nothing but a bitter disappointment. Does he really think folks in our district want the NSA to continue to spy on us? And that we want an internet tax? How about his unwavering support of anything remotely related to Monsanto?

Anybody know someone that isn't interested in furthering the government's long reach into our daily lives? Or that can't be bought with crony capitalist money? I'd happily vote for that person.

I'm not even sure what 9:55 is talking about. Black helicopter = me. RepubliNazi = Chaney style GOPers. Ruined "our" party, dunno if he means red or blue......but one thing is for sure, he/she/it cries out to the government for "safety" from alleged terrorists. Rabble rabble! TSA, DHS, protect us from terror! FDA, protect us from evil vitamin companies! DOJ, protect us from racism! Government government government, help, I'm scared!

"Supreme Court decision? What Supreme Court decision?"

The Court struck Section 4, automatic imposition of preclearance. Not Section 3, which Holder is proceeding under.

Just as Benny was the ONLY member of the Mississippi delegation to vote against the NDAA.
9:55 He's not wrong and you are a cool aid drinking dumbfuck who'll wonder why we don't have any more rights, after they are all gone.
We're being sold out by our own RINOs and we won't forget. Time for the Republikan party to get thrown on the ash heap of history.

I'd like to know why Roger Wicker pulled his name off the letter supporting the defunding of Obamacare. Spineless lapdog.

Wicker voted for cloture on Rubio's folly immigration bill then voted against passage. No surprise when he trumpted to voters statewide in mailings that he had voted against the bill without mentioning that, in the true test, he voted for cloture.

Thad Cochran voted against both.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
