Jackson Metro Chamber Prez gets a raise.

Shazam. Jackson Metro Chamber of Commerce President Duanne O'Neill did such a good job last year he got a raise. A raise from $379,873 (Page 24 of 2008 Form 990) to $390,323. Nice work if you can get it.

Andy Taggart, no stranger to corporate welfare himself, defended Mr. O'Neill's pay in the Mississippi Business Journal last year when this website first raised the issue:

"Speaking as a member of the committee, Madison lawyer Andy Taggart said, “Duane O’Neill is a huge bargain to the whole metro Jackson region, even if we paid him more than he’s now making. The review that was conducted when his salary was set was a consequence of a review of similarly situated cities around the country.” Article

Mr. Taggart's assertion does not ring true as JJ reviewed Form 990's to see how much fifteen similar chambers of commerce pay their CEOs. The budgets are included as well. Jackson ranked fourth on the list (Year of Form 990 used is included) after placing second a year ago.

Atlanta: $826,288 ($13,159,649)
Jacksonville: $405,339 ($6,938,428)
Memphis: $397,913 ($6,632811)
Jackson: $390,323 ($2,369,546)
Nashville: $370,263 ($7,062,379)
Louisville:$369,268 ($9,673,243)
Charlotte: $363,170 (6,793,316)
Austin: $326,285 ($4,060,915)
Mobile: $259,942 ($5,012,641)
Knoxville: $256,594 ($1,948,205)
Baton Rouge: $250,052 ($2,866,711)
Little Rock: $229,945 ($2,452,543)
San Antonio: $198,858 ($3,903,366)
Shreveport: $193,921 ($1,874,810)
Phoenix: $175,379 (2008. $3,371,056)
Birmingham: $123,000 ($3,342,831)
Tampa: $139,203 & $142,144 (2 CEO's. $3,300,000)

Was this somehow performance-based, like a bonus? You know, like on account of the tremendous growth and expansion of private businesses in the area last year? Just asking.....

Breathtaking. Unbelievable.

9:56. Do you think that other areas around the country have not experienced similar growth patterns? Do you really think the metro chamber has had any relevance in the growth in the area?

Birmingham is a little misleading. They had a split last year.

So the Chamber ran a deficit and had an outstanding loan of over a million, yet they give him a bonus of over $100k, deferred comp, retirement plan, full benefits and a base salary over $200k?

Something looks mighty fishy.

I can do just as crappy of a job as he has, and I'll do it for the half the pay.

What I find interesting is the percentage of the overall budget the executive compensation is! Here in Jackson it is a little over 16% Most of the other cities cited here are around just 5%. The second highest percentage is Knoxville with 13%. It looks like our chamber is spending a very large portion of their budget on executive compensation.

10:13 - this is 9:56 here - you're not familiar with the concept of sarcasm, are you?

Is there a college major in "Executive Leadership in Non-profit Chambers of Commerce"? Compensation of this caliber befits a heart surgeon or pro football player(grin). I mean this is almost twice what the Governor makes.

So whose scandalous affair or strange fetish does he know about?

That is why you should join the Chamber......Help pay thoes saleries....What a joke. I was asked to join last month and after thinking about it....what do I get for my membership? Nothing

I can't say whether Mr. O'Neill does a good job or not as I am not that familiar, however I do have to say... you have to pay for talent. Whether it be a school superintendent or a chamber president, you are competing with the private sector for talent. People with skills do not give them away- nor would I. If you expect your public servants to be charity cases, you had best get used to mediocrity at best.

The pay for talent canard is an overused and extremely lame excuse. If you truly believe that the Chamber couldn't find someone equally skilled to do the job at $200,000 annually then you are only fooling yourself.

Must be nice. He makes all that money while I scratch around for a living in the business enviroment that he "helps" create. What a joke!

I'm always amused by the haters who sit around and complain about the salaries of business leaders -- as if they could do the same job. Go apply for the job and quit bitching and moaning. Stop acting as if this guy named his own salary at gunpoint. His board set his salary and obviously thinks he's worth every dime. It's called the free market. He is not being paid with public money. Envy and bitterness are not very attractive attributes.

*** ONE-SIXTH OF THE BUDGET GOES TO PAY O'NEILL ***

Percentage CEO compensation to Budget
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jackson 16.5%
Knoxville 13.2%
Shreveport 10.3%
Little Rock 9.4%
Baton Rouge 8.7%
Austin 8.0%
Atlanta 6.3%
Memphis 6.0%
Jacksonville 5.8%
Charlotte 5.3%
Nashville 5.2%
Phoenix 5.2%
Mobile 5.2%
San Antonio 5.1%
Louisville 3.8%
Birmingham 3.6%
Either the Chamber BOD is impotent, incompetent, knowingly feathering the nest of one of their good ol' boys or some combination of all the above.
Bend over Chamber members!
You'd be hard pressed to prove the free market had anything to do with this compensation decision. His board must have been high on Psilocybin at that meeting.
$393,323. $393,323. Good Lord. A non-profit. $393,323.
Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.
