Bomb Iran, Syria, Anybody.

The Meridian Star reported today "All three candidates currently running for the 3rd Congressional District seat were in Meridian Tuesday to speak, answer questions, and mingle with voters at a Young Professionals of Meridian forum at the Hilton Garden Inn on Highway 11/80.".....

However, Republican candidate Gregg Harper made the following statement:
Of the war in Iraq Harper said, "I think the Republicans did a lousy job of articulating why we're in Iraq...It's about the war against fundamentalist Islamic terrorism," closing his Iraq comments with strong words, "Every time we get bombed then we ought to drop a hard bomb on Iran and Syria where all this garbage is coming from." http://www.meridianstar.com/homepage/local_story_086010200.html

I can almost hear the "yeah buddy" from the necks in the audience.

really?

and what does Iran have to do with Wahaabism and its spread?

What about terrorism by the home grown radicals here and in Europe?

I read this and just shook my head. al-Qaeda would LOVE it if every time one of their attacks brought us closer to World War III. That's the whole objective.

I don't think Harper's stupid, but I think he's pretending to be. I hope he gives up that act when he actually shows up to work at Congress, or his role in the next legislative session will be limited to comic relief.

I thought it was pretty damn ignorant and i'm the war hawk here. SO if Al Qaida London bombs us who do we go after? Iran? They are Shiite. Syria? Syria hasn't really helped Al Qaida. They are more into Hezbollah.

Like I said, does he even know the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite?

Of course he doesn't. Sigh. I was seriously thinking about supporting him--I'm a Democrat but Charlie "Mr. Burns" Ross horrifies me, and some of my neighbors were going Harper--but LORD, not know!

That's something one would expect from someone like that numbskull Landrum. The statement exposes Harper as lacking knowledge and insight about the Middle East, a complex and dangerous place. IMO on the Congressional stage we don't need inexperienced greenhorns.

I was anonymous. I was simply talking about his point re: articulating why we are there.

I doubt he knows the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite; if he does, he obviously doesn't care. But in the Republican primary, that's a plus, not a minus. It's kind of like not knowing anything about physics, evolutionary biology, psychology, economics, etc. Willful ignorance is celebrated in large segments of the American Religious Right, in exactly the same way that it's celebrated among the Religious Right in Iran and Syria. It's a city of God/city of man thing, where the more you refuse to learn, the stronger your faith is assumed to be--and the "stronger" and "more decisive" your personality is assumed to be. It's an apotheosis of the stereotypical male tendency not to ask directions. If you're determined to get there but refuse to look at a map, then that proves you're a real man. Or something.

In a country that elected Bush twice, I'm not sure that's an ineffective campaign strategy.

But comments come back to bite Tom.

An adroit Democrat in a general election could use that statement ("Every time we get bombed then we ought to drop a hard bomb on Iran and Syria where all this garbage is coming from.") to peel off moderates who at this time, while they may support an activist foreign policy, have war fatigue.

It wouldn't be hard to turn Harper's words into a very effective TV spot that exploits that fatigue.

With all due respect Tom, give me a break.

I guarantee you during WWII every damn Congressman knew the difference between nazism and Communism or fascism. I don't expect them to know the finer points of subsitution nucleophilic reactions of the first order BUT I do expect them to know who the hell we are fighting and what their ideolody is in 2 or 3 sentences, especially since we have been involved with it for decades. Please.

FITNA

Statement from LiveLeak:

LiveLeak.com has a strict stance on remaining unbiased and allowing freedom of speech as so far as the law and our rules allow. There was no legal reason to refuse Geert Wilders the right to post his film (Fitna) on LiveLeak.com and it is not our place to censor people based on an emotive response. We in no way endorse Geert Wilders, his views, nor the views expressed within Fitna. To many of us involved in LiveLeak.com some of the messages therein are personally offensive. That being said, our being offended is no reason to deny Mr Wilders the right to have his film seen. Pre-emptive censorship or a discriminatory policy towards freedom of speech are both things we oppose here on LiveLeak.com. A person has a simple, clear choice about whether to view this film. No one is being forced to view it and nor is it being broadcasted on every channel on their television set. If you click on media simply to be annoyed, it is pointless to blame others for your choice.

We do not intend on defending the content of Fitna, only our choice to allow it. Anyone has the full right of reply on LiveLeak.com. Any person or organizations are free to post their opinion and, dependent on said response falling within both the law and our rules, we will afford such responses equal exposure. There are undoubtedly better ways to spark a discussion but this film is now out there and we believe we should all grasp this opportunity to create an open dialogue and discussion on this subject.

Fish, but they don't, and they celebrate the fact that they don't because it plays into the argument that they are "decisive" and guided by God's will, not human knowledge. In a Republican primary in Rankin County, that could be an effective campaign strategy.

WHY DO YOU PEOPLE CONTINUE TO DEBATE THE CURRENT SITUATION?????

I'M NOT A CHICKEN LITTLE SCREAMING, "THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!"

BUT IF YOU READ REVELATION OF THE BIBLE, IT IS CLEAR WHERE WE ARE AND WHERE WE ARE GOING. NO AMOUNT OF RHETORIC CAN UNDO WHAT HAS BEEN PROPHESIZED AND WE MUST FACE REALITY. IT MIGHT NOT BE THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE AS THE PROPHEIES STATE IT WILL HAPPEN AS A THIEF IN THE NIGHT. LOOK AT THE CURRENT EVENTS - SEEMS LIKE A PRIME TIME FOR THEIVES IN THE NIGHT.

It has for about 2,000 years now. Still not a good reason to go around bombing random people.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
