White House fine with Pan Am Bomber's release. Correction: made to story.

Note: All right, there is new information released and a couple of commentors were gracious enough to post it here. I used the Australian as the source for this post, a legitimate news outlet. The original story was in the Times and thus behind a pay wall but both are owned by Newscorp. I rarely quote bloggers that don't provide documentation of what they allege in their posts unless its opinion only and then will usually make disclaimers about it. In this case, the White House released correspondence showing how strongly it was opposed to the release. I'm not going to zap what I wrote for several reasons. One is to show that even using acceptable sources, the story and corresponding opinion can still miss the mark. Two, to show how things can change as a story develops. Three, if I do make mistakes, I don't suddenly take them down without mention but instead, correct them and admit the mistake. I won't admit to a mistake here but will admit to providing opinion based on a story that later turned out to be erroneous in facts and its fundamental nature. I have no idea why the Australian published the story as it did. My apologies. See additional stories posted in the comments section. The White House released correspondence showing it opposed the release.

Go ahead Craig, Ladd, Stauffer, Eichelberger, and NMC, defend this one.

"Correspondence obtained by The Sunday Times reveals the Obama administration considered compassionate release more palatable than locking up Abdel Baset al-Megrahi in a Libyan prison.

The intervention, which has angered US relatives of those who died in the attack, was made by Richard LeBaron, deputy head of the US embassy in London, a week before Megrahi was freed in August last year on grounds that he had terminal cancer.

The document, acquired by a well-placed US source, threatens to undermine US President Barack Obama's claim last week that all Americans were "surprised, disappointed and angry" to learn of Megrahi's release

Sunday Times: "[T]he United States wanted Megrahi to remain imprisoned." The Sunday Times article made clear that the administration supported keeping Megrahi imprisoned, but that in the event he was released, they preferred to release him in Scotland rather than send him to Libya. From the Sunday Times (accessed via Factiva):

In the letter, sent on August 12 last year to Alex Salmond, the first minister, and justice officials, [deputy head of the London US embassy Richard] LeBaron wrote that the United States wanted Megrahi to remain imprisoned in view of the nature of the crime.

The note added: "Nevertheless, if Scottish authorities come to the conclusion that Megrahi must be released from Scottish custody, the US position is that conditional release on compassionate grounds would be a far preferable alternative to prisoner transfer, which we strongly oppose." LeBaron added that freeing the bomber and making him live in Scotland "would mitigate a number of the strong concerns we have expressed with regard to Megrahi's release".

The US administration lobbied the Scottish government more strongly against sending Megrahi home under a prisoner transfer agreement signed by the British and Libyan governments -- in a deal now known to have been linked to a £550m oil contract for BP.

It claimed this would flout a decade-old agreement reached by the UK and US governments that anyone convicted of the bombing would serve their sentence in a Scottish prison.

Todd: "The last thing [the Obama administration] wanted was him going to Libya." On the July 26 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, senior White House correspondent Chuck Todd said, "I think there isn't a contradiction about what was reported and what [the White House is] claiming." From Morning Joe:

TODD: In the letter itself, it seems as if the position that [National Security Council chief of staff Denis McDonough] is taking with your email there and what was said in the letter, which was, look, we don't -- the last thing they wanted was him going to Libya, and that was the point of the letter. And then the people I've talked to about it -- that that was the point they were trying to drive home to the Scots, which was don't send him back to Libya. You're going to do a compassionate release, keep him in Scotland, keep him under some sort of house arrest there, but don't send him back to Libya. And I think the actual letter itself and even the parts that were reported by the Sunday Times of London doesn't contradict that.

Yesterday, The State Department released its correspondence with the Scottish Ministry of Justice, which states in no uncertain terms that the administration "is not prepared to support Megrahi's release on compassionate release or bail," and that "it would be most appropriate for Megrahi to remain imprisoned for the entirety of his sentence."

Responding to the release of the letter in a post headlined "Two Cheers For The Administration On Megrahi," PowerLine's John Hinderaker states that this story is a "non-controversy in which the State Department and the Obama administration acted honorably and appropriately."

"White House Scumbags"?

Please stop asking people to consider you a journalist. Please stop getting your panties in a wad when a public document you pull from the clerk's office and copy on your scanner gets put on antoher website or gets put on some news channel. When you use terms like "white house scumbags" you completely take yourself out of any journalistic realm whatsoever (not to mention to the inaccuracies of the story).

I never claimed I was a journalist. The Australian is one of the largest papers in that country. I wasn't exactly quoting some blogger making up stuff. Now, the guy above posted the text of the times story, which is behind a pay wall and now more correspondence has been released. I was commented on news provided by a legitimate news source. I"m actually intending to make corrections to this post but haven't had a chance yet.

In case you didn't notice, since you obviously don't get humor, I don't get my panties in a wad, I make those posts tongue in cheek and having some fun with them.

You, Kingfish, are a hack. Pure and simple. Your hatred of liberals (and Obama in particular) blinds you to reason. Your oh-so-eager willingness to believe anything negative about Obama is telling. Are you now going to write an article about how G.W. Bush is a scumbag because he facilitated this release, many years in the making? I doubt it, because you are a hack. I hope this episode makes you think a little bit more about your attitudes and willingness to believe everything you read on Drudge, but again, I doubt it. And your excuse that you're just having some fun is bullshit, the refuge of cowards.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
