Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced today that Jessica Blount has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and arson in connection with the death of 41- year-old Anthony Wilson. On June 14, 2023, the Jackson Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment located at 3540 Sunset Drive. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found the body of Wilson, who was burned and deceased, placed in a shopping cart in the bedroom. A subsequent autopsy revealed signs of blunt force trauma, indicating that Wilson had suffered significant injuries before his death. After the murder, Blount set the apartment on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. She fled the scene but was eventually apprehended and taken into custody.Blount was sentenced to 40 years in prison with the Mississippi Department of Corrections. She will serve 30 years in prison and 5 (five) years of Post-Release Supervision. District Attorney Owens stated, "This tragic case underscores the severity of violent actions and reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that those responsible face accountabilities. We will continue to seek justice for victims and their families."
