Sam's to Jackson: It's been nice but......

JJ has learned Sam's Wholesale Club on County Line Road will be leaving Jackson and moving to Madison. Jackson business and community leaders made a serious effort to keep the store from leaving the Bold New City but to no avail.

Sources told this correspondent the reason for the move is Sam's is using a new business model for its stores. Sam's would build a store while other developers would build strip malls next to the new Sam's and benefit from the increased traffic brought by the retailer. Sam's changed its model to take advantage of this and decided to become the developer. Sam's will now build a strip mall with a store as the anchor for the development. Sam's becomes the landlord and makes more money of the tenants. Leveraging the brand, anyone? It is not yet known when Sam's will complete its move.

Good for them. Will hate to see them go, but can't fault them one bit. It does make me more content in my decision to use the Pearl branch though.

That loop around County Line is on its last leg.

Maybe the new lobbyist for the Board of Supervisors can change their mind....you know....wining and dining.

Anonymous said...

About time. Between them screwing up the parking situation with the gas station, the traffic, and a couple of property crimes some acquaintances have experienced, I stopped going there altogether and only shop at the Pearl location.

So, wise and smart people around here who think that Rankin County is some kind of normal place in America because all they can see in their little Mississippi lives is a comparison to Hinds County, the most dysfunctional place in America by almost any standards, who is going to win the House District 59 special election today?

Anonymous said...

We in Rankin County see much farther than Hinds County. That's why we are here.

It will be interesting to see if they build a new gas station in Queen Maryville. Wonder if it will look like a train station or a temple for a greek goddess

9:27, well that's nice, good for you, how about your prediction???

Anonymous said...

Well put, @9:27.

"Maybe the new lobbyist for the Board of Supervisors can change their mind....you know....wining and dining." JJ, you need a "like" button.

This 9:27. I predict close between Lum and Powell.

Anonymous said...

This 10:00, I think that is a good prediction. I think Powell, but close like you said.

great, more stuff in Madison. I guess I'm the only one but I miss the one main road, one grocery, Sledges, and the peace and quiet. Hell, Madison is just becoming another Jackson.

Anonymous said...

Guess Sam got tired of losing business in Mogadishu, MS and made the smart move to Madison, MS.

Celebrate Jackson!

I'm not in favor of warehouse marketing in Madison but they didn't poll me. In my opinion, places like Sam's represent 'destination shopping' rather than 'convenience shopping' ~ bulk buy for retail rather than drop in shoppers. how many customers in Madison are going to buy forty two-liter bottles of red cola or ninety cans of beanie weenies for relabeling?

I'd suggest Sam's is not leaving in order to escape Jackson as much as it is to attract shoppers from Yazoo, Holmes, Attala, Leake and Scott Counties into Madison. And that's not a good thing. Just one more place for the 'bogus handicap placard crowd to park'.

Anonymous said...

No problema fellas. Whole Foods will pick up the slack.

Anonymous said...

Obviously the powers that be in Madison don't agree. Maybe they'll use the additional revenue to patch some of our potholes.

Anonymous said...

Wow, what a shock, you mean another business is leaving this once thriving city? And to think that the businesses that are left will now have to pull a even bigger load.

Anonymous said...

Sam's has a large grocery section. Maybe Queen Mary is trying to make a dent in Bagboy's wallet.

Anonymous said...

1:35 I saw what you did and it's funny.

Anonymous said...

Odd that Sam's would leave now just as Jackson was installing its state-of-the-art above ground sewage piping system.

Anonymous said...

I'm sad to hear this but I'm sure Kroger, McDade's and Whole Foods aren't. I live in Jackson and currently go to Sam's because its convenient to stock up and not have to go to the grocery store as frequently. For me personally, it's not as convenient or worth it to have to drive to Madison (or Pearl) to do that. I'll just be going to the grocery's near me more often.

Anonymous said...

Get used to McDade's being gone from Maywood Mart as soon as Whole Foods gets going. Whole Foods is a killer of small markets like McDade's and the proximity will makes it all the worse.

Anonymous said...

I go to the Woodland Hills McDade's, but I'd hate to see the Maywood Mart store become a casualty of Whole Foods.

Anonymous said...

Paul Anthony's leaving, I hear. If McDade's leaves as well, that's two locally owned operations killed by BIG GROCERY (you know: BIG OIL, etc.). I thought the "green crowd" was supposed to be supportive of the local folks. Go figure.

12:36 - Amen! When is Madison going to pave the roads. Reminds me of well, say....Fortification. Old Canton Road at MRA.

Bill Dees said...

@12:36 I hope they don't fix the potholes. The "fixes" are always worse than the pothole. And Madison won't pave any streets until someone else pays for it. This administration pays less attention to basic governmental services than any other place I've ever lived.

Anonymous said...

Good, I say.

Sams is for racist Rankin County rednecks and bourgeoise Madison McMansion owners anyway. I don't know if you heard, but we creative class people in Jackson will soon be shopping at the Whole Foods.

Jackson isn't dying. It's just getting more exclusive.

Anonymous said...

Paul Anthony's leaving, I hear.

Already has a new storefront in Gluckstadt.

2:09: The normal Madison, upscale household only has two freezers and an extra fridge in the garage. How much damned 'stocking up' can one do at Sam's? Do you think we're stupid enough to believe you buy five three pound bags of vegetables and enough sourdough rolls to last half a year? And six three pound cans of baked beans and eight of the 'three assortment' packs of catsup, mustard and relish? Horseshit! Nobody does that.

Occasionally I'll see 'Mr Patel' rolling a Madison Wal Mart wagon to his SUV stacked high with 30 to 50 assorted cola bottles and enough ripe bananas to feed the Jxn Zoo; but, I doubt this justifies the relocation of Sam's.

Mayor Mary ain't stupid enough to put a 'stale products warehouse' in the middle of 'Peacock City'.

Anonymous said...

Let me get this right numbskull. You'll travel to the Sam's on County Line Road (versus the McDade's on Duling) in order to "stock up and not have to go to the grocery store as frequently" but you won't travel to the Sam's in Pearl which is only 6/10ths of a mile farther away.

Go take that shit over to the JFP and wait a couple of weeks for your comment to get released from moderation. LOSER.

Better yet ask Ladd for an intern job. She loves those already brain dead.

What does it say about people that I never see Jacksonians cheering for the downfall of the suburbs the reverse.

Anonymous said...

Because the dwindling number of taxpaying Jacksonians that remain are too busy trying to extract themselves from the failure of a city chock full of toothless leaders, RINO conspirators and downtown minstrels playing in front of the Electric Building long forgotten songs of "next Memphis, mo' money".

Anonymous said...

I am confused. Sam's is a membership club, not the Walmart store. Is there a Sam's membership club in Pearl?
And Paul Anthony's is moving into the old Majestic Burger at Canton Mart.

JJ opens with a comment or two about Sam's abandoning it's old business model of building a store and then others building strip malls surrounding Sams. I've tried to recall seeing a Sam's built using this model and can't come up with one.

The Sam's in Pearl certainly doesn't mirror this model. It was located where it is for one reason; as a destination for weekend riders from Simpson, Rankin, Scott, Forest, Smith and Copiah. None of those folks wanted to drive all the way to County Line Road to stock up on frozen chicken strips and canned sodas.

Kingfish said...

As usual Shadow, you lack reading comprehension skills. I wrote that was what I was told by several community leaders in Jackson. Sams won't comment.

Ophelia said...

Well, I'm *hors du combat* in this fight, as I never used Sam's Club (except when involved in some charitable event or church thing, when I could use their accounts) and I'm that *rara avis* who prefers to shop daily for fresh stuff, like Europeans in small villages, rather than "stock up" as if there were a famine approaching.

Actually, I don't think folks like me are all THAT rare, and I believe that McDade's. Mac's on 51, and Rainbow Co-op will still attract and retain their loyal customers. Sufficient numbers to survive and prosper, anyway. They would not be able to handle huge multitudes crowding their aisles, and are probably happy with the size of their customer base. Sam's-tyoe shoppers are another breed altogether, and there's room for both consumer models in a town this size.

(Yes, I omitted Paul Anthony's from the list above, because his shop's prices are highway robbery, pure and simple, and every time I'm forced for freshness' sake to buy a whole grouper or snapper, I weep a tiny tear for the late lamented McTaggart's! Fabulous fish, fair prices---o Jeff, we miss you!)

Shadowfax said...

Not sure how you conclude that my comprehension of the opening remark is inaccurate since it IS in fact accurate. I could care less where the comment came from ~ It's inaccurate. It simply doesn't follow. Whether you dreamed it up or someone in Jackson supplied you with the notion, that is NOT the standard Sam's footprint, or at least to my knowledge, which is what my post says. Why would you have objection to that being pointed out? You were not being personally criticized. Touchy Touchy.

Anonymous said...

Sam's does sell things other than groceries, folks.

Anonymous said...

Ophelia you are an idiot. Rainbow will go the way of the Dodo bird and quick. I give them 6-9 months after the Whole Foods opens. Same for McDade's on Northside. The Kroger on 55 will be the only normal grocery option in that area.
I don't shop at Sam's much either but even I can see these things as plain as day.

Ophelia said...

11:33, O thou far-seeing Cassandra of our metro world, I must partly disagree. You may be right about the Maywood McDade's, but I think Rainbow will not only endure, it will prevail, as it's more of a "cult thang" than a competitive business. The big-book chains haven't killed John Evans' Lemuria, for the same reason.

Anonymous said...

Shadow @ 9:24. Whether or not it is the standard Sam's footprint or not, a Sam's Club in Birmingham, AL appears to fit in the new business model with a WalMart and a strip shopping center next door.

I used to agree with your assessment of Ophelia, however, she/he has really started growing on me.
I must say that s/h at least seems well-read, or is quick with a thesaurus, small European villagers notwithstanding.

I know how close the one in Pearl is but that proximity still doesn't make it anymore convenient. I can hop down Ridgewood to get to Sams now. It takes a lot longer - or at least feels that way - to get on the interstate to Pearl (or to even go down State and 80).

Also, the name calling isn't necessary. It really diminishes what people will take from your arguments.

Shadow - I don't know what people in Madison do, as I don't live there. Maybe you didn't read my entire comment. When I say stocking up, I mean just getting enough meat, fish and snacks, etc to last me about a month, so I don't have to make daily runs to the grocery store.

Methinks your sarcasm meter is broken.

Shadowfax said...

Hmmm; 12:35. That would be odd. A Wal Mart next to a Sam's. But, I'm afraid you missed my point. Sam's is not moving because of any rethought business model or whether the Walton empire or someone builds a strip mall. It's relocating because it can attract more license plates in the new area.

The entire County Line Road area is a driving/shopping nightmare and it's been one for two decades. Today's shopper wants gratification in product as well as the driving experience. Sitting through an entire red light or being fifth to pull out of a parking lot is no longer acceptable. A dillapidated building, inadequate parking, a rat's maze getting to the place and insane opportunities to exit the area caused the demise of Jackson's Sam's. That plus reaching out to customers in the rural counties surrounding the Metro.

We don't have to necessarily all jump on the 'sinking ship' bandwagon every time Jacktown is involved. This time, the fact that Sam's is in Jacktown is coincidental.

Bonus Question: Which Audrey Hepburn movie did Ophelia appear in?

Earth to Shadowunemployedloserfart. The model DID change. Not 2 years ago, Sam's spent a ton of money remodelling/expanding at their current location. They are walking from that. "Sam's story" is they have "structural issues " there. Total bullshit.

Anonymous said...

Jackson is a goner. Done. Kaput. Won't be long before the Jackson side of County Line looks like Jackson's portion of Highway 80. Vacant buildings and whores.

2:29; I know you didn't call me an unemployed loser fart. I know that because Kingfish has told me he doesn't allow that type of personal nasty insult. That aside, get a grip genius, you may be working for one of my businesses as we speak.

Why everyone wants to paint this as a failure of Jackson is beyond me, although I realize that's a primary mission of many JJ threads. Sam's is moving for the variety of reasons I've posted. And for the same reason O'Charley's just down the street is closing. Can't get in or out of the place and it's tough to negotiate the traffic for an hour in order to get to the place and away from it. That may not be structural, but it's INFRAstructural.

Shadow @1:46

My post was not intended to validate the new business model as the reason for the rumored move to Madison. I was only trying to point out that the concept of a Sam's Club associated with a strip shopping center was already in existence, whether based on the new business model or not Maybe odd, but someone in the Walton empire thought it was a good idea and built the Sam's Club and WalMart right next door to each other.

Wildwood Centre was opened on September 29, 1991 to the south of Birmingham, but north of Hoover, Alabama on Lakeshore Drive next to I-65. The mall's original anchor stores were Sam's Club and Wal-Mart. Wal Mart was originally a small-footprint store, but expanded into a Wal-Mart Supercenter in the mid-1990s. Adjoining the Wal-Mart and Sam's Club is the 325,000-square-foot (30,200 m2) retail strip mall developed in the first phase. Anchor tenants now include Hobby Lobby, Academy Sports and Outdoors, SuperPetz, and K&G Menswear. The Center also includes approximately 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2) of shop space

I don't like the idea that Sam's is coming to Madison. It needs to stay in Jackson. It will hurt the not only north Jackson, but Ridgeland to. Though, buying bulk "Pineapples" sounds good to me...hey I had to say it.

Col. Reb Sez said...

Some of the comments on here clearly aren't from Sam's shoppers. Personally I prefer Costco, which is a much better. But the quantities sold at warehouse stores are quite reasonable and in many cases cheap.

For perhaps ten bucks I can buy 150 Red Solo Cups (which fill me up). At the grocery store these are about $4 for two dozen. So I can get them for about the third the grocery store price at a warehouse store. Same for lots of other goods. The nice little Styrofoam coffee cups with lids cost about $3 a dozen at the grocery store. $15 at a warehouse store buys me 200.

One does not buy super-large quantities at a warehouse store. One buys just enough. Yes, the laundry detergent comes in a bigger bottle, but I've never needed to throw any out. Just all the way across the board. And yes, I shop at grocery stores, too. I go to the store that sells the stuff I want.

As for food, grocery store specials are frequently at far better prices than those at warehouse stores. But the warehouse stores tend to have great produce.

Maybe you "Kool Aid Drinking Jacksonian's" need to open your eyes...Shadowfax get real!!! Have you seen the number of vacant buildings and for lease signs in the area? What better location than County Line Road but lets face facts as Demographics are changing. After the party city murder every tenant in that building wants "OUT" and that's a fact!! Contact an owner and ask them. Yes Jackson has been on a downward slope and I see no rebound PERIOD!

Listen up potholebitchers: Gotta take the vinegar with the sugar. Up in Madisonburg there's so danged much construction going on it's impossible to repair roads as quickly as dump trucks and low-boys hauling earth machines can tear them up. Probably ten subdivisions currently in building phase. Who doesn't want a lumberyard and concrete business near Madison. That's the cost of being Madison.

The rest of you can just repair the screen doors on your trailer and hunker down for Whole Foods' opening giveaways.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
