WHO says asymptomatic spread is rare.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported a record 498 new cases of the Wuhan Virus as well as 20 deaths today. The total number of cases is 17,768. The virus has caused 837 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 52% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 13,356 recoveries. More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.
Hospitalizations fell to their lowest level since April 19 but jumped 32 cases back up to 390 patients. ICUs continue to fluctuate while vents dipped but rose to 83 patients.
Meanwhile, our friends at the WHO changed their minds on the Coronavirus yet again. CNBC reported:
Coronavirus patients without symptoms aren’t driving the spread of the virus, World Health Organization officials said Monday, casting doubt on concerns by some researchers that the disease could be difficult to contain due to asymptomatic infections.
Some people, particularly young and otherwise healthy individuals, who are infected by the coronavirus never develop symptoms or only develop mild symptoms. Others might not develop symptoms until days after they were actually infected.
Preliminary evidence from the earliest outbreaks indicated that the virus could spread from person-to-person contact, even if the carrier didn’t have symptoms. But WHO officials now say that while asymptomatic spread can occur, it is not the main way it’s being transmitted.
“From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual,” Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said at a news briefing from the United Nations agency’s Geneva headquarters. “It’s very rare.”
Government responses should focus on detecting and isolating infected people with symptoms, and tracking anyone who might have come into contact with them, Van Kerkhove said. She acknowledged that some studies have indicated asymptomatic or presymptomatic spread in nursing homes and in household settings.
More research and data are needed to “truly answer” the question of whether the coronavirus can spread widely through asymptomatic carriers, Van Kerkhove added.
“We have a number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed contact tracing,” she said. “They’re following asymptomatic cases. They’re following contacts. And they’re not finding secondary transmission onward. It’s very rare... Rest of article.
Kingfish note: Do I even need to say it?

I'm never wearing a mask. I'm not a cuck. I will not submit to tyranny. I will not kneel before communist thugs either.
well, well, well. if you are sick, stay at home. how hard is that?? did it really take a bunch of overpriced commie doctors at the WHO all this time to come up with that one? i learned that one for free from my mother...
I wore a mask a handful of times during the first month of the outbreak, but I haven't worn one since and won't. The masks, especially the surgical variety, don't do a damn bit of good. And most people that I see wearing masks aren't even wearing them to where they cover their mouths and noses. It's almost as if they have become some kind of deranged fashion statement. But I for one have worn a mask for the last time.
I wonder if the idea of asymptomatic spread being rare is simply because in order to trace and asymptomatic person you have to know they are infected and therefore they may be taking precautions.
A better question is how successful are they in tracing where all the infections originate? If they can show a substantial majority came from symptomatic people I would buy into that theory. However, where community spread is happening you can't discount asymptomatic transmission.
@1:34pm - No problem, Darwin will take care of you. Hopefully before you take anyone else out.
Uptick in protests = uptick in cases? Or was this a one time data dump reporting fluke?
@1:53 PM
Fortune favors the bold. And whats the point of living if you can't feel alive?
This will not be the last time humans have faced dread disease.
There goes college football season.
Anyone want to buy a historical tent used in the Grove during the days when you could enjoy college football.
We could have learned a lot more and sooner if China didn’t withhold the data they had about the virus. The WHO sided with China in this disaster. Trump did the right thing by pulling funding from the WHO.
I've been trying to cipher who exactly the "new" deaths are. Best I can tell is that deaths of non-Long Term Care white people has been in the mid seventies for weeks so the new deaths are mostly minorities and LTC residents. Are these (new death) details readily available anywhere ?
@1:50 - the virus came from China, then spread through Europe and to the United States by Chinese tourists and business people.
You're welcome.
@1:53. Take a deep breath and relax. So we, that refuse to cover up, don't cause you concern about catching something you most likely will never get. Darwin is taking a break for now.
If wearing a mask to Walmart even rates on your list of problems, congratulations, for you are blessed.
Ornery & callous, but blessed.
I don't think everyone is turning in numbers every day. Just when they get around to it. At The Lodge in Starkville on Saturday, the sign asks you to wear a mask. Not a single employee had one on.
1:50
Ding ding
Anon-E-Mouse, likely just a fluke. Yesterday's numbers were abnormally low so it is probably just results from a couple of labs hitting at the same time.
2:00, this jump is too early to blame on the protests. You can thank Mother's Day and Memorial Day get togethers for this jump.
The masks are simply the Covid-19 version of the TSA as a response to 9/11. It is theater to make people feel safe. It's effectiveness is questionable. But if we had implemented them early on then we wouldn't have had to shut down.
The truth is that there is nothing you can do except seal yourself in a bubble and society cant function that way. The best response it to wear masks, practice hygiene and social distancing, and stop reporting the daily death counts.
I guess the McEnroe link is somehow relevant. Maybe it will occur to me a the afternoon progresses.
2:33
Working directly with labs, I can tell you that you are right. As we see with the Weekend numbers, whenever we get a huge jump or drop in numbers, this go back to normal the next day. It's the way the numbers are collected.
So, the virus wasn't made up so people could wear masks, and later on start rioting and looting with their masks on to keep them anonymous? Oops, did I say that?
It's impressive how fast opposition to protests got memoryholed. It went from "Sociopathic virus spreaders" to "justified rioting" in no time. https://i.redd.it/i1kbe0xn6w251.png
Won't get fooled again.
@3:41
It's almost as if they aren't reporting the news, they are influencing opinion. We truly live in an augmented reality. As long as they can get every popular information source on the same page, repeating the same buzzwords and censoring all opposition, they control the narratives.
Monday numbers. 379k Tests. Way down from previous couple weeks. Guess people are out rioting. 16k Positive.
On June 5, the MS Department of Health reported:
"Our usual morning COVID-19 update will be delayed today due to technical problems with our data reporting system. We're working on having most information ready before the end of the day."
Since then, they have been late on reporting the data. The data has also been below the 7-day moving average and the 14 day moving average. All that happened today was that they got their technical problems corrected, which made up for the past several days of under-counting.
I see quite a few wearing their masks hanging from one ear.
Saw one woman wearing hers on her elbow.
1:34, you and your REOPEN MS kind, who take no responsibility for anything, who hate everyone who doesn't look and think exactly like you, who literally promoted what you posted above and actually advocated going out to establishments, not wearing masks and spitting and coughing on those who did, are just a bunch of spoiled brats who think you're God.
2:08 - I always heard that The Grove was the best place to enjoy college football; as opposed to a few blocks away in Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium.
Does the sale of your vaunted tent include the tickets that often go unused, or is it just for the tent and parking space?
7:14 is just too dang funny! ...don't care who you rail for..!! : ))))
1. China withholds info on the scamdemic they concocted to destroy our economy
2. China is behind the protests and they have gained control of organizers..well known.
3. 3 Chinese nationals were just arrested for trespassing and spying on a U S Naval installation....
4. How long will it be before they (China) drop an EMP on us and send us back 200 years? Wake up! They aren’t finished with us yet. They have managed to destroy our economy. We have not seen the complete
Damage yet. Yet, we are called deranged and racist when we call this shit the Wuhan Flu or the Chinese Flu....sorry I don’t fall into your CNN crap. Remember the death panels from the ACA? Seems like nothing but the old and weak are dying. All of our pharmaceuticals are produced in China and India...very few here! We did this to ourselves. I had this crap and survived. It’s tough like the flu. Oh! Yeah! The flu!!! Has anyone even heard the medical
Community talk about the flu lately? But of course! If you happen to die of the Flu it is quickly attributed to the bat car rat Wuhan flu from China .
7:14, give it a couple of years. The train is just starting to move. Meanwhile, there is another train heading in the opposite direction . They will soon pass in the night.
“ The WHO sided with China in this disaster. ”
Prove it or shut up.
Record number of cases? I agree-it’s time to open the state back up! Let’s stick our heads in the sand and pretend we are better than and smarter than everyone else. I mean, we are Mississippi. Any other governor would protect its citizens. Not us. We would rather contract trace for the rest of our lives. We are Mississippi.
"The train is just starting to move. Meanwhile, there is another train heading in the opposite direction . They will soon pass in the night." Actually I believe a head on is in the making.
Oh certainly, the spread and growth pattern of Covid 19 is all about a conspiracy to rob us of liberty. It's robbing damn near the whole world, but was aimed at us freedom loving folks.
And, masks must be useless and doctors and nurses have worn them for centuries only to look important.
So , how exactly did the conspirators planned to avoid being contaminated? Whoa! You don't think they fled to New Zealand or are making sure that no one with it comes near them? Are those around them wearing masks and getting tested? Is there a secret vaccine or vials with a cure like in the movies that only the villians have? Shouldn't we send the Seals and special ops to find it in the nick of time?
The jump in spread can't possibly be about centuries of other pandemic viruses having the same course of spread and growth. It can't be about Mother's Day and Memorial Day.
I guess we will find out now that everything is opening and you'll be in small spaces with re-circulating air with the maskless. Oh, and especially the macho men will have to be maskless so as to look brave. So what if men are dying disproportionately just like African Americans are? Oh my, what if that's part of the conspiratorial objectives?
For the genius whose momma told them to stay home when they are sick. Did she not mention that with some viruses if you are contagious without symptoms, you and momma can't know? Oops, the downside of having kids vaccinated and not dying of viruses for several decades...knowledge lost.
“ The WHO sided with China in this disaster. ”
Prove it or shut up.
Disprove it. Already know you won't, and won't "shut up".
WHO crawfishing again. Had to issue a clarification to their statement yesterday saying that asympomatic people can and do transmit the virus. Spokeperson said some members were reporting that they were finding few secondary cases from identified asymptomatic carriers, but now also says some estimates say up to 41% of transmission can be from asymptomatic individuals. Says her initial statement was "misunderstood".
The WHO just keeps shooting itself in the foot on this.
8:55, you really should talk to someone about that anger you have.
From the Mississippi Department of Health on June 9:
"Unfortunately, today's COVID-19 update will be delayed until later this afternoon due to technical problems."
I'm wondering is West Nile virus still a thing ??????
7:40 Sure, its still a thing. Caused 958 infections and 54 deaths nationwide last year. I'll leave it up to you to make irrelevant comparisons to COVID with over 2 million cases and over 110,000 deaths in three months as far as what kind of response is needed.
