Haley Hustle or Haley Hustled?
Mississippi threw away hundreds of millions of dollars on experimental "green energy" projects under Haley's tenure with little to show for it. Jerry Mitchell reported in the Clarion-Ledger yesterday that another Mississippi Hustle took place when KIOR ripped off the state for a $75 million loan. Mr. Mitchell reported:

They don't make them like this any more.
Rowan Hurt Taylor died Tuesday, July 18, 2017. The son of Lillie Belle Rowan and Oscar Bomar Taylor, Rowan was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on January 13, 1925.
Rowan was a graduate of the Jackson public schools. He attended Power School, Bailey Junior High (designed by the father of his friend Bob Overstreet), and Central High School. For an interval during the Great Depression, he was a student in Washington D.C., where his father was general counsel for the Home Owners' Loan Corporation. In D.C., he was lucky to see an FDR inaugural parade from a window in the Willard Hotel restaurant and to attend many a Washington Senators baseball game. Eventually, he studied as an undergraduate at Mississippi State University, where he had the experience of living in "Old Main."
As soon as he was old enough after the outbreak of World War II, Rowan volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy and trained as an officer at the midshipman's school in Chicago. He then served on a destroyer escort in the Pacific and, as a radar officer, helped his shipmates to survive kamikaze attacks.

Ole Miss: $25,100 for Freeze phone records
Former Ole Miss Head Football Coach Houston Nutt is trying to get all of former Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze's phone records from their former employer. Mr. Nutt filed a public records request for all phone records for all numbers assigned to Mr. Freeze since June 2012. However, Ole Miss claims it will cost $25,100 to produce the records.

Ole Miss releases names of 9 boosters
The names are posted in the 2017 and 2016 NCAA notices of allegations. I am going to post them below as I find them.
The Butler Bust
The video posted below shows the drug bust of Christophe Butler. MBN agents arrested him for felony possession of marijuana in 2011. Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith accused the agents of planting the evidence when he tried to withdraw the indictment against Butler. However, the video below shows Butler placing four bags of weed in an ottoman. The agents recovered the weed from the ottoman and arrested him. Butler was convicted this week and sentenced to serve thirty years in prison.
Ole Miss goes for the TKO against Nutt
No one ever said fighting Ole Miss would be easy for Houston Nutt. Ole Miss and IHL filed a motion to dismiss the former head football coach's lawsuit against the university yesterday in U.S. District Court. Mr. Nutt sued them on July 12 for breach of contract that occurred when Coach Hugh Freeze and Athletic Director Ross Bjork defamed him in conversations with the media.

To gain it all and lose it all in one day
Note: The subject of this post is not the attorney with the same phonetically-sounding but different spelled name at Baker Donelson.
Ridgeland attorney Allen Smith has racked up an impressive series of wins in lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson in St. Louis over products liability claims involving talc powder. However, the U.S. Supreme Court might have just thrown a huge freeze over his success in one day with a June ruling.

Convicted! Did D.A.'s alibi disappear?
Updated with press release from Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood.
Christopher Butler was convicted of felonious possession of marijuana in Hinds County Circuit Court today. The case was the subject of much controversy, as Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith tried to withdraw the indictment. The Attorney General took over the prosecution of the case. Judge Jeff Weill will sentence Butler Friday morning. The indictment and part of the file is posted below. The jury deliberated for less than an hour before returning a guilty verdict.
Jackson loses a round in airport fight.
The City of Jackson will have to watch the fight in federal court over control of the airport from the sidelines. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves dismissed Jackson from Stallworth et al v. Governor Phil Bryant, et al today. He said the City of Jackson had no standing to fight the state takeover of the airport in federal court. The FAA nor any other federal agency had taken any action regarding the municipal airport. Thus no federal question existed. He also ruled the legislature's actions did not violate Jackson's due process or other constitutional rights. JMAA remains a party to the lawsuit.
Rick Cleveland answers Ole Miss questions
The Answer Man returns to answer all the questions folks are asking about the Ole Miss football situation:
No more misdemeanor bookings in Raymond unless you are a drunk or a wife-beater.
The Raymond Detention Center will no longer accept prisoners who are arrested for misdemeanor charges. The new policy does not apply to DUI and Domestic Violence arrests. The memo is posted below.
Feds to DPS: Pay it back! All $7 million.
or how The Kingfish caught the Mississippi Department of Public Safety engaged in a blatant coverup.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration demanded the Mississippi Department of Public Safety repay $7.1 million in DUI enforcement grants. DPS stalled paying the federal government for several years, but the NHTSA finally said enough is enough and referred the debt to the Treasury Department for collection last November. NHTSA also said Mississippi continued to have problems in using the grants. DPS refused to provide any records about the demands to this website but JJ was able to obtain them from NHTSA.
Lindsey Miller rips Rebel Rags
Lindsey Miller denied any participation in the Great Maroon Conspiracy. Rebel Rags sued Mississippi State football players Leo Lewis and Kobe Jones for defamation in Lafayette County Circuit Court on June 9. The complaint also named Lindsey Miller and several John Does as defendants. Lindsey Miller is the stepfather of Laremy Tunsil. A NCAA Notice of Allegations charged that an unnamed Ole Miss booster gave free merchandise to two unnamed players in violation of NCAA guidelines. The President of Rebel Rags, Terry Warren, didn't take kindly to such allegations and made his displeasure quite known in the complaint.

Judge Thomas stays Ethics Commission order in Ole Miss case.
Hinds County Chancellor Dewayne Thomas just issued a temporary stay of the Mississippi Ethics Commission order that directed Ole Miss to provide a copy of the NCAA amended notice of allegations with the unredacted names of boosters cited in the notice. A hearing will be held on August 15, 2017.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith asked a federal court today to stop his retrial from taking place. The petition for a writ of habeas corpus argues the Attorney General should be stopped from trying Mr. Smith for a second time since a juror allegedly and intentionally tried to effect a mistrial. The petition is posted below. The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves. The D.A. was indicted by a Hinds County grand jury for improperly helping criminal defendants. His January trial ended in a mistrial. His second trial is scheduled to begin on July 30.

Judge asked to recuse himself in Ole Miss booster fight
The war between Steve Robertson and Ole Miss opened up another front yesterday. Mr. Robertson won a round last week in his fight to obtain the names of the boosters cited in two NCAA notices of allegations that were issued to Ole Miss. However, an unnamed booster, John Doe, asked Hinds County Chancellor Dewayne Thomas to void the Ethics Commission order. The Scout.com reporter asked Hinds County Chancellor Dewayne Thomas to recuse himself from the case yesterday since he has connections to Ole Miss.
Judge Kidd denies Ben Allen's request to toss verdict.
Ben Allen will have to take his fight against Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith to another court. Circuit Judge Winston Kidd denied his motion for a j.n.o.v. and a new trial yesterday.* Mr. Allen was convicted of one count of embezzlement in February. A grand jury indicted him for ten counts of embezzling funds from his employer, Downtown Jackson Partners. However, the non-profit organization defended him and said he did not embezzle funds. Judge Winston Kidd gave him a suspended prison sentence of five years and a probation term of two years.

This matter is before the panel of Dickinson, P.J., Coleman and Beam, JJ., on Robert Smith's Second Petition for Interlocutory Appeal by Permission, filed by counsel for Smith. Also before the panel is Smith's Motion to Stay Trial Court Proceedings and the response thereto filed by counsel for the State of Mississippi. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann issued the following statement and pictures.
Where did the pay raises go?
The low pay of Detention Officers has been a thorn in the side of Hinds County for quite some time. The Justice Department blames much of the jail's problem on a shortage of employees, while the Sheriff blames the staffing shortage on the low pay scale. An attempt by the Supervisors to increase the pay of the Detention Officers nearly ten years ago shows the problems in trying to give such raises.

Monitor pulls no punches on Raymond jail & Sheriff in court.
Note: The Kingfish attended the hearing in Gulfport yesterday.
The monitor for the Hinds County Detention Centers inspected the jails and found them very wanting. She pointed out numerous deficiencies as Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason repeatedly failed to remedy problems at the Raymond Detention Center. The Sheriff sat stoically in the Gulfport federal courtroom as the monitor
described a state of affairs where prisoners were held after they should
have been released, inmates had easy access to contraband, deadlines
imposed by the court were missed, and numerous other problems that
plagued the detention centers still existed. However, the worst charge she made was that the Sheriff allowed detention-center positions to be used for other purposes. U.S. Magistrate Judge John Gargiulo did not take any action against Hinds County or Sheriff Mason but instead ordered another conference to be held in the fall.

Sheriff rocked in jailhouse report
A Justice Department report blisters the Hinds County Sheriff's Office for its operation of the jail. The report was submitted to U.S. District Judge John Gargiulo in May by a Justice Department monitor. The Justice Department sued Hinds County and the Hinds County Sheriff in 2015 for the the Raymond Detention Center's deplorable conditions, inability to protect inmates from violence, and holding inmates past their release dates. The settlement agreement requires a court-appointed monitor to periodically inspect the jail and report its findings to the court. The report paints a picture of a jail that is woefully understaffed while inmates all too often control parts of the jail. The report is posted below.
When the Country Club of Jackson was the battlefield for booze
No one would have ever thought that a scene of tuxedos and tiaras would be the battlefield where prohibition died in Mississippi but that is exactly what happened at the Country Club of Jackson in 1966. Whiskey and other spirits were illegal in 1966 as Mississippi was surprisingly the last state to dissolve prohibition. Bootleggers in places such as the Gold Coast or Gulf Coast made a fortune as supply met demand, laws be damned. Mississippi collected a "black market tax" that backstabbed local law enforcement officials who tried to enforce prohibition (if they weren't on the take themselves.). Imagine the state collecting taxes on weed while a Sheriff announces on tv he just seized a shipment of the same weed. Liquor laws were that dysfunctional for many years in Mississippi.

Happy Independence Day!!!
Today is Independence Day. While Americans remember fallen soldiers and honor the brave, JJ will pay its respects to a different soldier- Sergeant Stubby. Stubby was a homeless pit pull mix puppy who found his way to the quad at Yale where soldiers were training before shipping off to the Great War. One doughboy adopted him and of course snuck him onto the ship when it was time to ship off to war. The rest is literally history. The New York Times even honored him with an obituary. An animated movie telling his story will be released next year.

Trollfest '09
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.
If you get tired come relax at the Fox News Tent. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag.
