Clinton, Rankin, Madison keep A's while JPS fails.

Today is a big day for education in Mississippi. The Mississippi Department of Education released the 2016 school ratings this morning.  Grades were expected to drop since this is the first year that a more difficult test is used to determine the ratings.  However, all local school districts but two managed to keep their grades from last year.

Clinton, Madison County, and Rankin County retained their "A" ratings.  Pearl was a "B" last year and is a "B" this year.  The Hinds County School District kept its "C" rating.  Unfortunately, Canton slipped from a "D" to an "F".  The JPS results show why Superintendent Cedric Gray is in hot water.  JPS also went from a "D" to an "F" but the magnitude of the disaster becomes more apparent when one examines the district school by school.  Previous "A" rated schools such as George and Casey Elementary schools plummeted to "C" and "D".  40 out of 55 schools received grades of "D" or "F".  All high schools were "D" or "F". The middle schools were even worse: 1 "D" and 10 "F's".  3 of the 4 "A's" went to special schools.

In other words, JPS grades sank while the other school districts remained the same.  The grades for individual schools are posted below.

The news here is that the two charter schools received a D and an F. Maybe there is something to the "If the parents and students don't give a damn, nothing matters" argument.

Let's just blame Obama...

I hope these grades will cause Jackson to take down those television shows and maybe use the money more wisely, but they will not.

Where can one go to find the ratings for Yazoo county schools?

I graduated from Callaway in 1979 and it was a pretty good school. It had nothing on the schools I attended in Northern Virginia but great teachers made up for the crappy facility.

Number of 2016 JPS National Merit Semifinalists: 0.

Callaway had 8 semifinalists in 1979.

Madison Crossing-C. I knew that part of the county was ratchit

This should give all the white Jackson Democrats and "progressives" using McWillie -- until their children enter a private school for 7th grade or move out of Jackson -- cause for concern.

Heartbreaking to see schools that I attended - Chastain, Callaway, and Boyd - are all now F rated, and another school Watkins - D rated. They were great schools in the 1950's and 1960's. Man. What a shame.

The charters are easily answered - this is the first year for their operation, taking kids that had spent grades 1 through 4 from JPS and putting them into a truly 5th grade classroom. Many of them came into the 5th grade unable to read at 2nd grade level. Part of the reason that charters have a five year contract - so they have time to be measured on their product, not on what they inherit.

Also, the grading process has the wonderful blackhole of scoring - 'growth'. There is good reason for this being included, but it obviously hurts an operation like a start up charter.

The charter schools did so well. They're clearly the answer for all our woes.

Not!

The elementary school my old employer adopted in the 1980's, Bradley, isn't on the list. When I looked it up, that building now houses the JPS Campus Enforcement Division. Wow.

Someone told me that the MDE changed their ratings guidelines from using actual or raw data scores for each school on a set scale to a Bell curve wherein there was a set number of schools that had to fit into each rating category on the Bell curve. Using the raw scores on a set scale had some schools rated higher than they are on the Bell curve. It would be interesting to see school ratings using the set scale formula vs the Bell curve formula. Regardless of where each school may be, a C, D or F school needs to identify the problem(s) and take steps to resolve them.

@ 11:28 - you are a product of the school I assume? Ratchet. R-a-t-c-h-e-t. If you're going to insult folks, please, do your best.

They talked about using a curve but decided not to do so. There was some backlash against the idea.

Ann Smith in Ridgeland has a D. WOW. Highland Elementary did get a B.

Looks like Ann Smith must make some major changes.

Is "ratchit" @11:28 or "ratchet" @1:06 a slang term with which I am unfamiliar? Or are they both showing off their WRETCHED spelling skills?

How funny that just the other day when challenged about the JPS probation DonnerKay told her challenger that she's not seen any of the problems detailed in the MDE report and, in an appeal to her own self-righteous authority, she made a point of noting that she's visited many JPS schools.

@ 1:30 - It is indeed a slang term and it is spelled ratchet, just like the tool. It is not the word wretched. No need to yell.

In the mid to late 1970s when my brother and I attended Callaway it was a top rated school and we received a stellar education. Callaway graduates scored high on national tests while excelling in sports as well. The school produced its share of teachers, athletes, scientists, lawyers and physicians. I earned a law degree and my brother and cousin became medical doctors. I don't believe that children today are less intelligent or capable. We must place expectations, confidence and values on kids beginning in early childhood to create successful adults. Barring those things, we fail.
BTW we were raised by a single mom who had a high school education and worked for the same company until she retired.

That's not how you spell wretched. Or rat shit.

Kingfish called the Kamikaze conspiracy theory. From his FB page:

"Dont yall fall for that banana in the tailpipe, that propaganda, that narrative... that they are trying to feed you that Black folks cant run anything. And further dont fall for the hype that surrounding bedroom communities run by white leaders are doing any better. Dont you find it interesting that The City, Our HBCU, and our school district are all simultaneously under fire...at the same damn time? Doesnt that puzzle you? Suddenly ALLLLLLL these Black folks are incompetent?..Money's been mismanaged for all this time and just NOW, yall goin public? And right after they tried to takeover the airport..hmmmmmm. That dont seem strange to you?"

Anonymous said...

Kamikaze is a real scream; blame whitey!

Anonymous said...

4:12 you are correct. The conservative wing of the Republican party is the first to admit that the White Republicans are just as bad as Black Democrats at managing things. See our state government as a prime example. Also, see the Republican Congress.

Anonymous said...

Did you deem my post as racist? You've gone PC.

Here is my 2 cents. I pay a great deal of taxes to Hinds County and Jackson for this "Deplorable " condition. Take all athletic programs away, bring grades up ONLY after the kids start learning, but we know they won't. It's a "cultural issue". Plainly said. Sports ain't gonna take you to heaven. Neither will academics. But at least you won't be dumb as a stump

4:12 and 4:57... yes just look how well the Democratic controlled cities are run. Just look at D.C., Detroit, Chicago oh and Jackson. We should all be so lucky to live in places like these.

How does Madison County warrant an A, when their schools get mostly B, C, and D? Their average across all their schools look more like a B or even a C.

I know someone who taught at Powell for many years. Not one of her students (according to her) attended college. Not only that, she regularly runs into her former students working at local restaurants as busboys, cashiers, and wait staff. These are kids with a JPS high school diploma, mind you, that are doing minimum-wage shit most kids do after school or during summer to pick up a quick buck (and probably want $15/hour).

JPS has been a failure for decades. I'd like to see statistics on how many janitors in the city have diplomas from Jim Hill or Calloway or any of JPS's failure factories.

The naked truth of the matter is that JPS is free day care. 99.9% of the kids are there to be watched and fed two meals a day. Why should we expect them to want to succeed when JPS (and their parents) give them no hope and no tools to effect change?

6;16 Athletic programs actually teach participants stay out of trouble. Sure, some still go bad, but overall they bring a positive effect. Teamwork, sacrifice, work, preparation etc

Go Bailey APAC!

I can hear the Kenneth argument now: "Of course out schools get an F because racist white folk are issuing the grades."

Anonymous said...

Yet to see someone point out that 100% of charter schools received either D or F rating...

Which demonstrates how very little you truly fathom about charter schools.

Actually I did in the post. Why don't you try actually reading it. The very first comment said so. Liar.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
