Update: MPD said in a press release: "The driver killed in the fatality accident earlier today on Interstate 55 in Madison has been identified as Devon Mannery, age 20, of Jackson, MS. The Madison Police Department sends its condolences to Mr. Mannery’s family and friends."
The Madison Police Department issued the following statement:
Fatality Accident on Interstate 55 in Madison
On 10/17/2016 at 11:03 AM, the Madison Police Department received a report of an automobile accident on Interstate 55 north of the Madison/Highway 463 exit near mile marker 108. Officers and emergency crews from the Madison Fire Department, Pafford EMS, and Air Care responded to the scene.
The initial investigation determined that a delivery truck was proceeding northbound on Interstate 55 past the Madison/Highway 463 exit in the right lane when a 2007 Chevrolet Impala passed the truck on the right shoulder of the roadway. The Impala then attempted to cut in front of the truck when the two vehicles collided. The Impala then proceeded through the left lane and into the center median area where the vehicle overturned two times. The driver of the Impala was ejected from the vehicle during the accident and was deceased on the scene. There were no other occupants in the Impala. The driver of the delivery truck was not injured. The identity of the deceased individual is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
After the accident and during the investigation all lanes of the interstate were closed for a short period of time. As of this time north and southbound lanes are open but motorists are urged to use caution and expect further delays as the investigation continues.

Wouldn't surprise if the Impala had Hinds plates.
Sad, but Darwin Award candidate indeed. In all my years driving, I've only seen someone pass on the shoulder once and it was a bunch of redneck yoots in a pickup. They were successful, but nearly caused other wrecks. Wonder what the story on this one is. Kid, texting, no seatbelt.... who knows or likely ever will.
God rest their soul.
KingFish, may He continue to provide you mercy, soften your heart, and teach you humility and basic standards of human decency when commenting on the loss of human life.
2:11 hate to break it to you, but not all the idiots in this world are located in Hinds County. Know that's what you like to think, but there are plenty of these folks to go around - and some even with Madison County plates!
I would not be surprised if he had already voted for Hillary. Another reason to not allow voting in advance. He might have a change of mind.
@2:24 - if he has cast an absentee ballot, it is not to be counted now. Voter has to be alive on election day for it to count.
Actually, though, someone is going to have to question it if such a ballot exists so that election officials will know to reject it due to his self-destruction.
Why is there always some sanctimonious, self-righteous, condescending poster sniffing about how a news blog shouldn't post news? Get over yourself.
This happened in Madison but Hinds County still gets blamed
2:48
If the headline of "Darwin Award" when reading about the tragedy of someone carelessly throwing their life away and injuring others does not bother you, then I question your humanity, manners, and respect for your fellow man.
Someone died today.
According to the Madison County Journal article about this accident, there was nobody else injured except for the driver - who was evidently not competent to be driving on the highway. Granted, the idiocy of the driver COULD HAVE injured several more people, we should all be glad that the only one that got hurt was the incompetent driver.
Well, 2:57, I guess you told me!
The only injury was to the dumbass that killed himself.
Sniff on, brother/sister, sniff on.
People die every day.
This Same damn thing happened in front of me on 55 but closer to Gluckstadt about 2 weeks ago. I was going about 65 mph in the right lane and an Impala passes me on the left then comes across and passes the car in front of me on the right shoulder. I remember thinking "Where are the unmarked, blacked out, secret police, SWAT team brigade, whatever they are, when you need em'"
Nature holds some dumbass immediately accountable for his actions and some of you cry foul?
That's because you and your loved ones weren't harmed by this idiot.
Love it when failure is rewarded with failure. Makes my day!
... but not all the idiots in this world are located in Hinds County.
But a great deal of Mississippi's idiots hail from Jackson.
4:14 - you need to get out more. There is a whole lot of Mississippi that you evidently have never traveled.
2:30. Now that the dearly has departed he will probably vote several times....
stupid is as stupid does...
KF - you need to get some "Like" buttons for the comments.
Kid is from Jackson. Attended JSU.
2:20 / 2:57, I am in complete agreement with you.
Though this was caused by the victim's own actions, no one's death should be celebrated.
2:48 / 3:13, you are of the devil. You will probably take that as a compliment.
I live outside Boston, and I be damned if I ain't been passed twice on the right shoulder in the last two years.
Kingfish is using the Trump playbook. Tomorrow he'll say "I was kidding. C'mon". Disgusting.
Just found this on his Facebook page. It seems he needed to study the book a little harder.
Devon Mannery
August 24, 2011 ·
Reading the Drivers book again finna try to get the permit before this weekend but hmu if you got it
This maneuver is common in that area....impatience makes young drivers take risky moves which can be deadly.
Sorry for the family.
6:49 You may just be THE devil. How sick to troll a dead man's page for the purpose of criticizing.
From WLBT: People who frequently drive in that area say it's notoriously dangerous.
"They're coming from three-lane to two-lane, and it's a little hard to transition. And then when you add to that, many drivers today just aren't focused," said David Hale, who lives in Madison and drives by that stretch nearly every day.
7:56 I agree. Trolling a dead mans page is a touch creepy.
As far as the quote you mentioned from WLBT....I'm not sure how dropping from a three lane to a two lane warrants a passing maneuver on the right shoulder when it's the far left lane of the three lane that ends. Drivers like this are what makes it dangerous. I'm sorry he passed away from his own stupidity....but....you can't blame the "notoriously dangerous area". Just blame the notoriously dangerous motorist.
Wait - You didn't explain how 'Ann' at 5:43 managed to delete a post she 'authored'.
I was a witness to this accident. I55 does NOT drop from a three lane to a two lane at the site of the wreak. He was a stupid young man who paid the consequences for being a stupid young man. I55 is a two lane wide open all the way from Canton to Madison.
"Have YOU been injured by a wreckeless automobile driver while operating an 18 wheeler? If you have, then call me. I'm attorney $$$$$&&$& ********* and I will get you the money YOU deserve!"
After reading some of the comments regarding this young man (WHO WAS STUPID) I question why I live in Mississippi. When someone loses their life, regardless of the cause, it is not a time for celebration. Thank God no one else was injured but there is a family grieving. I don't care where he lived nor should anyone else. I pray that the folks on this site that wrote stupid things never have to go through a horrible thing like this.
Whether or not this subject should be discussed on a blog is one thing. Discussing it after it's here is another. This 'maneuver' is typical behavior for impatient people of various ages and various moods during various days. It's not that uncommon to see this type of anxiety exhibited in bass boats, four wheelers, crotch-rockets, cars, track-meets, trucks, go carts and people on crowded sidewalks. Ima jest scoot by over here and get around this fool.
Everybody wants to get somewhere. Some are in a hurry and don't even know why. Some take risks and think their plan is the perfect plan. Sometimes it ain't.
I-55 from the Madison exit to the Sowell Rd exit in Gluckstadt is certainly a dangerous stretch, but the mostly straight, flat road is not to blame. In 4 years of living up there and commuting to Jackson daily, my wife and I have observed it over and over. Employees of the Nissan plant and its suppliers seem to be the culprits for the vast majority of impatient, wreckless and just all around selfish driving. Anyone who drives in the area regularly knows exactly what I mean...newer 4 door sedans(mostly Nissans), heavily tinted windows and something silly hanging from the rear view mirror. The tag is almost always Hinds or one of several counties to the south or west of Madison.
When are folks gonna learn that actions have consequences, that they are accountable for their actions? *sigh* Guess I am living in my own little dream world..........
Employees of the Nissan plant and its suppliers seem to be the culprits ...
Who bolster the Madison County economy through sales taxes quite nicely.
We speed to an early death, never to enjoy the time we saved.
@7:55 I don't know what you're classifying as celebration in the comments, glib perhaps. I would have a hard time saying the wreck was a tragedy in that it was completely avoidable. Risk takers sometimes receive a negative outcome from a completely voluntary and obviously wrong decision. Only tragic element is the grief the family suffers from the senseless and needless, some would say stupid, act this young man committed.
If he passed on the right shoulder, it's likely because some jackhole was blocking the actual passing lane, on the left. If you are in the left lane and driving the same (or slower than) the speed of the traffic on your right, you are obstructing the flow of traffic. The speed limit is irrelevant, and you can be cited. And if I'm trying to get my kid to the ER and your ass is updating Facebook in the left lane, a ticket is going to be the least of your worries.
I'm Ann and I deleted my comment because I didn't want to be identified. Two weeks ago that kid was dropped off at home by an SUV that turned the corner onto the street and then gunned it to go half a block. So when I saw the zillion cars parked at that house yesterday I immediately wondered if there was a connection to the crash. Apparently he was a nice kid.
11:55 that is one hell of an assumption you are making just so you can bitch about what obviously is one of your favorite bitches. While I agree with you about people who drive in the left lane, particularly when they are riding alongside someone in the right lane, the facts of this case don't seem to fit your bitch.
If there had been a car in the left lane as you suppose, don't you think that it would have been caught up in the melee when this kid careened from the right shoulder, across the highway and into the median? At least my assumption is as valid as yours, if not more so.
More importantly, even if the left lane was blocked, it would not justify the kid trying to pass on the right shoulder. While you may be pissed off by the car in the left lane, your subjecting all the others on the highway because of your right to drive as you think appropriate fails the legality or rightousness test.
11:55
If a driver is driving in the left lane, going 78 in a 70 mph zone, and you are pissed that they are blocking you from going 85, you probably would find out that the speed limit is totally relevant when you come face-to-face with a member of the Highway Patrol.
Your throwing in that BS about getting your kid to the ER is just that, BS.
1:55, it may come as a surprise but the highway system was not built for your enjoyment and use only. Most of the time people pass on the right shoulder because of ignorance. Many highways all of the lanes are going the same speed as they are crowded.
How many times have you had to speed to get your kid to the ER? Maybe you should move closer to the ER if it happens often. Or find out what the kids problem really is.
How sick are some of these posts!!!! Some mother's child is dead!!! I only hope this young man knew Jesus as his savior!!!
I'm thankful that this dumbass only killed himself. His reckless and selfish actions could have killed an entire family.
So many Christians making un-Christian-like comments.
3:01 AM
You were a witness to THIS accident?
It did happen just north of Madison exit where the lanes narrow from 3 back to 2.
If you saw another wreck you may want to report it because these pictures, these witnesses, and this car wreck all happened just north of Madison exit.
People should never pass on the right shoulder...ever.
Likewise....slower traffic should keep right.
if you are not passing someone you should not be in left lane. Once you do pass, get in right lane.
Simple.
If you are signed in with your Google account, it can be done. I can delete them as well but haven't done so in this thread.
The young person is dead. He cannot hear your insults.
However, he likely has friends and loved ones who hoped he would live long enough to mature.
And, everyone who reads some of these comments sees the racism by those who want to use this death as an example of the inferiority of African Americans.
I've been hit twice by idiots and each time it was an uninsured redneck in a hurry in his pick up truck.
But wait, isn't it the rednecks who have fought mandatory auto insurance ( being held accountable after a wreck means most assholes who cause a wreck don't have it) and who did away with car inspections?
What a convenient little tale @7:42.
7:42: BS.
I seem to remember a certain wreck on Old Canton Road several years ago. Two doctors were killed, remember? There were quite a few things said about the driver that were not exactly nice. Go back and look for yourself if you don't believe me. Or the Van Sice case as well.
This kid was reckless and was responsible for his own death. We hate it for the family and friends because they are suffering. However, be thankful he didn't kill anyone else as well. The only difference between him and the other drivers is he didn't kill anyone besides himself.
by the way, WLBT was going through his FB page and posting photos yet I don't see anyone slamming WLBT for doing so.
This young man was the perfect example of when good people make one bad decision. He paid the ultimate cost for that decision. How many of us made a mistake when we were 20 that could have ended our lives but God saw fit to give us another chance? No need to answer. Devon was a college student and working a full time job. Was he perfect? Of course not. But he was a young man that anyone would be proud to call son. So I would say to all those that have posted negative comments...How would you feel if your son/daughter died from one of their bad decision. "There, but for the grace of God, go I"
I am beginning to think not many posters have ever driven on an interstate. Why do they think there is more than one lane? It is because one lane would not handle the number of cars using the road. If all of the cars drove in the right lane unless passing we would have one long parking lot. People need to get off of the goat trails Jackson calls streets before posting about multi lane highways.
They have more than one lane for a reason and it isn't just for your use only and it isn't for passing only.
9:47 - Actually the left lane should be used primarily for passing and if you are moving slower than other traffic you are obligated to stay right. Easy rule to follow is that if you are in the left lane and there is nobody in front of you but someone behind you, move to the right lane.
It ain't just a good idea; it's the law!
"(d) Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway."
9:47 AM
You sir are wrong.
There are multiple lanes of travel and the left one IS FOR PASSING.
It is not for you to lollygag in and look back and wonder "why is the guy behind me all upset because I am going the speed limit?"
If you wish to enforce speed limits...go to school, get a badge, and write tickets. Do not attempt to do so as a civilian.
That is not the point of the left lane...it is not yours to do with as you please..it has a purpose......read the article below please.
http://www.sunherald.com/news/article58796563.html
10:31, how many times have you seen an entrance to a private road or driveway from an interstate?
Again, there is a difference in the goat trails in Jackson and an interstate.
I started a thread about this, on CityData. But the thread got "disappeared". So, THANKS, KINGFISH!!!
I'm SO tired of idiots endangering my life, driving like this one was. I've even had one carload of Democrats (who had to be doing 100mph) whip around me, and pass IN THE SUICIDE LANE on Lakeland. You know: the short little lanes cut into the median, so that people can turn? I'm astonished it "worked". But I was doing 55mph (speed limit's 50), and if they were doing 110...
7:42 wanted to be first to play the race card, and apparently was. That was the first I knew that the deceased person was black. If it had been mentioned earlier, I missed it. It wasn't relevant.
And for you moaners who think you need to lecture others about passing lanes and the lanes in which we should drive...(as Archie Bunker would say), STIFLE IT. There is never an occasion, short of a dire emergency when one should take to the shoulder of the road to continue travel.
I remember thinking "Where are the unmarked, blacked out, secret police, SWAT team brigade, whatever they are, when you need em"
Exactly. I tried something like that, I'd be hogtied & then buried under the jail.
@8:39...Best comment ever!
I have to wonder if all these self-righteous, holier-than-thou comments from the wannabe preachers (or one very prolific preacher wannabe), are not from the sort who fly by me, driving at reckless speeds, and otherwise driving like psychotic jerks - with license tags that say things like "4GIVN".
Save it for Sunday School, Brother Bob!!! If I want to celebrate, I'll celebrate!
In order to control my anger, when yet another creature who NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN BORN, nearly clips my bumper, nearly runs me off the road, nearly kills someone's kid-on-a-bicycle, zooms down the Interstate at 120 miles per hour (something which seems to be happening with increasing frequency, around Jackson, Memphis, Tuscaloosa, Chattanooga, and Birmingham).... I say to myself, "Soon, enough, buddy, you'll be wrapped around a utility pole, or smooshed-flat against a concrete embankment."
It helps me control my rage, to think these things. And so, when these things actually come to pass, it reinforces the effectiveness of my anger control strategy. And if I want to celebrate, with others, on a blog, then I'm going to.
I'd suggest you select another venue for your prissy little preachin'.
12:50 PM
Not a single soul on here has suggested it is advisable or proper to use the shoulder to pass.
You are apparently not able to read or comprehend if you gathered any such notion.
What people did say about lanes and passing is that it is illegal to simply "ride" in the left lane of travel. That lane has a purpose and that purpose is to pass. If you are not overtaking a vehicle in that lane then you should be in the right lane.
It is that simple.
Now...if it gets complicated...like the car in front of you is traveling at the same speed as you...then you may have to adjust your speed up an MPH or down an MPH...but whatever you do...do not stay in the left lane.
There are laws...and there are articles addressing the laws...and there are police officers quoted in the articles telling YOU that it is not legal to ride in the left lane.
Do you understand that...did that make it through your dense brain?
Do you see that no where in that type that I put forth that I said anyone should pass anybody on the shoulder of the road?
And we wonder why this state remains the dumbest, most illiterate state in the nation?
Prolly because of loud-mouthed, bloated out of control people like you, 4:01.
4:02; you say not a single soul has suggested it is proper to use the shoulder of the road for passing. You may not have seen this post above your own:
"Most of the time people pass on the right shoulder because of ignorance."
Whether you like it or not, stupidity will eventually prevail and idiots will take to the shoulder, or even the median to get where they want to be in the traffic configuration. This idiot did that.
And to the misinformed go-cart drivers who suggest the left lane is primarily for passing....that's just pure damned ignorant and illogical. It is indeed a lane typically used to pass slower moving traffic, but you cannot cite any manualized reference restricting that lane for such purpose.
§ 63-3-601. Keeping to right; exceptions
Upon all roadways of sufficient width a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the roadway, except as follows:
1. When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing such movement;
2. When the right half of a roadway is closed to traffic while under construction or repair;
3. Upon a roadway divided into three marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable thereon; or
4. Upon a roadway designated and signposted for one-way traffic.
9:32
I appreciate your point.
But my statement holds.....nobody said it's proper to pass on the shoulder ....even that guy.
He said that is ignorant.
By definition ignorant behavior is not proper behavior.
and I'm sorry for being emphatic...it's these left hand lane riders who chap my ass
I get your point.
I drive in the left lane but I'm smart enough to move over if someone driving faster than I am comes up behind me. That's all anyone asks. It's when you have side-by-side drivers clogging the highway that traffic backs up, slows down, and accidents happen.
