Mike the Tiger was euthanized today. LSU announced on its website:
October 11, 2016 BATON ROUGE – LSU’s live tiger mascot, Mike VI, passed away today, Oct. 11. Mike VI was born on July 23, 2005, and adopted by LSU in 2007. He was 11 years old at the time of his passing.Bye-bye, Roscoe. At least you didn't suffer long.
Mike was humanely euthanized in his night house by LSU’s Attending Veterinarian David Baker, DVM, Ph.D. He was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma in May 2016 and underwent stereotactic radiotherapy on June 1, 2016, at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer. He entered hospice care in his night house on Oct. 10, 2016, so that his caretakers could observe him to ensure that he did not suffer.
There will not be a formal memorial service for Mike VI, but fans are encouraged to share their memories, stories and photos on social media using #MikeVI.
LSU has begun the search for a young, male tiger. As with Mikes IV, V and VI, LSU will seek to obtain a donated tiger from a rescue facility.

"Mike was humanely euthanized". Humanely for tigers, murder for people? Something doesn't make sense.
just a guess, but a strong sedative to put him unconscious and something to then stop his heart
Striped lives matter
Better be glad Jim Craig didn't make it down there - he would have tried to put a stop to the euthanization; claiming the drug that put him unconscious was not humane.
But he was probably too busy tying up the MSSC on his unending lawsuits about drugs that MDOC doesn't use anymore and have no access to, but he is 'afraid they might find some and try to use them again'.
At least Mike doesn't have to suffer any longer since Craig didn't make it down there in time.
I've never seen so many people get worked up over a freaking animal. Last week in Baton Rouge a school principal was indicted for murdering a co-worker who was pregnant with his child and throwing her body in a ditch, but all we hear about is a dead mascot.
Go get another tiger, for Pete's sake! The Jackson Zoo will probably sell you one to help fund their African village project.
Oh, just shut up, 3:15. Please.
We do it to people too. It's called hospice.
I just got over Harambe, and now this? Life is not fair!
I've always had a particular motto (among others): "Watch how a person treats an animal and you'll know that person's true self".
It's kind of like telling a girl to watch how a boy/man treats his mother before you decide you want to be with him. Same is true of you assholes who have no feelings for this animal. Go on witcho bad selves and kiss my ass.
any word whether State has special uniforms for the BYU game on Friday?
Ditto @6:52 Mike VI was more than "just another animal". I'm an Ole Miss alumni and as much as I dislike LSU, Mike VI was LSU. People that have no feelings toward animals can kiss my ass also.
First they euthanize the Coach, and now the mascot. Does Fournette need to be worried?
I don't care how pampered the poor tiger was (and I'm sure he wanted for nothing, both in his roaring prime and in his lingering last days)---a wild animal simply does not belong in a cage. A tiger belongs running free on the Serengeti, catching a kudu or gazelle for supper, not trapped behind bars waiting for someone to throw him a hunk of meat. A cosseted bulldog like State's is another matter; dogs like being domesticated. Tigers...don't. Seeing the lordly Sumatran at the Jackson Zoo pace, pace, pace in obvious depression is heartbreaking. LSU should trot out some willing student in a big cartoony costume. Maybe they already do; if so, they should leave it at that, and stop buying live jungle creatures.
Ophelia,
Your caring attitude towards animals is admirable, but the article clearly states that LSU will be looking to again adopt a rescued animal. What can be wrong with this?
Also, tigers don't live in Africa so roaming the Serengeti is pretty unlikely.
