Judgments awarded against publisher of Mississippi Land & Lodges

Several judgments have been entered in Hinds County against Cindy Gray, the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Mississippi Land & Lodges magazine. Ms. Gray published several editions of the high-quality magazine focusing on hunting and "the sportsmen lifestyle in Mississippi". The last issue was published for the November 2011-January 2012 quarter. The magazine reports Curtis Publishing, LLC is the publisher. The Secretary of State's website states Ms. Gray is the only member of the LLC. There are four judgments against Ms. Gray in Hinds County. The judgments are:

1. Clear Channel. Clear Channel Broadcasting filed a complaint against Ms. Gray on February 27, 2012 in Hinds County Court against Ms. Gray and her d/b/a, Gray's Advertising. The complaint alleged Ms. Gray purchased advertising from the company on behalf of the Mississippi Kidney Foundation. The Foundation was not sued. Clear Channel claimed the advertising cost $4,745. Ms. Gray did not appear in court to defend herself against the complaint and Clear Channel obtained a default judgment against her for $4,840 on May 18, 2012. There is no listing of Gray's Advertising on the Secretary of State's website.

2. Roger Davis. Mr. Davis, a co-owner of Woodbridge Capital, filed a complaint against Ms. Gray and Curtis Publishing d/b/a Mississippi Land & Lodges on September 15, 2011 seeking repayment of a $9,500 loan issued in 2008. He stated Ms. Gray had not repaid the loan over three years after the initial payment of $500. The complaint states she wrote him a $10,000 bad check to repay the loan in May 2011. Ms. Gray signed a consent judgment on November 22, 2011. Mr. Davis then sent garnishments to several major banks in Jackson such as Trustmark and Bankplus. All banks returned the garnishments stating there were no funds to collect.

3.Chris Patrick filed a complaint against Ms. Gray on April 15, 2011. Mr. Patrick owned that nice beautiful two-story home on the corner of Ridgewood and Northside Drive (1612 Northside Drive). Ms. Gray leased the home on July 29, 2009 for $2,500 per month (Ouch!). The complaint states Ms. Gray did not pay the rent for February, March, or April of 2011. The complaint also states Ms. Gray changed the locks on the door and refused to let realtors show the home as it was listed when the complaint was filed. The court awarded a judgment of possession to Mr. Patrick on July 21, 2011 for $12,500. The award penalized Ms. Gray for staying in the home through May and June without paying rent and included $2,000 in attorney's fees. The order said the judgment could be enforced by the Sheriff on July 27, 2011.

4.Jackson Academy. This complaint was filed on July 15, 2009. As it involves a child, the details will not be published as the case is just a typical non-payment of tuition. The court awarded a judgment to JA for $3,900 plus 8% interest per year.

Mississippi Land & Lodges does not have a website. The magazine and Ms. Gray do not appear on any Facebook pages. The glossy-paged magazine include ads from companies such as C-Spire, The Rogue, Van's Sporting Goods & Deer Processors, McDade's Wine & Spirits, and Don Evans. The magazine published articles on expensive hunting lodges, wildlife, and hunting-oriented businesses.  Several issues were published in 2011.

This magazine came up last night on a local Duck Hunting website. Several members had purchased subscriptions, got one or two issues and nothing since.
The issues I read seemed like ti was going to be a great magazine. Too bad.

Saw the magazine with Don Evans ad (strange) and VanDevender article (even more strange).
Sad that this woman couldn't make a go of it.

Never saw this one but "Garden & Guns" is a great southern outdoor mag.

I can't figure out why Kingfish thinks this is newsworthy.

Attorney Don Evans is her uncle.

Yes It was an outstanding concept.

What a waste.

"Pearls Before Swine."
Or "Wild Boar" as it would be more in keeping with theme.

This is the tip of the iceburg.

Wish somebody could find her and buy the concept, art files and marketing materials from her. (Pay off her debts.)

It was designed to be syndicated in multiple states. And could have been a big deal in the right hands.

All involved from investors to advertisers, designers, vendors family and friends were taken advantage of.

And she appears to have skipped town.

Looks like this Gray chick wanted the NE Jackson lifestyle and didn't care who got F__d in the process.

Hope she's in single wide with no A/C and waiting tables at a truck stop.

Cindy Gray died suddenly in June 2011. Hope your "news" blog has enjoyed reporting half the story, as usual.

That's funny, Anonymous@12:33, my colleague said they had a conversation with Cindy Gray as recently as spring 2012. But maybe it was The Ghost of Cindy Gray, who also deposited a check.

Creepy!

I don't understand the rush to jump on the buzzard and gut wagon. And I don't understand the publication of this situation to begin with. Isn't it simply a situation where someone had a good concept and tried to make a go of it and it failed for whatever reason? If she had purposefully defrauded people with an 'in your face' attitude, I could see rubbing her nose in it.

If she died in june of 2011 then I saw her ghost a lot that fall. Including when I wrote her checks for ads that did not run.

Different Cindy Gray that died last year.

She was quite alive and well at her daughter's graduation from Prep last month, my dear 12:33.

Yes, she purposely diverted funds to personal use, changed the locks on her rental home when she couldn't pay the rent. I would say that's fraud.

BTW, the above obituary is for another Cindy Gray, who was probably about 10 years older than THIS Cindy. Please get your facts straight before you drag a departed soul into this mess.

"included $2,0000 in attorney' fees." (sic)

$2,000 or $20,000?

Kingfish said...

let me see, the one I wrote about is divorced, has a kid of a different name, is younger, looks different in her pictures, yup. I got it wrong. Don't you feel stupid right now?

That is NOT the Cindy Gray, publisher, in the obit. The Cindy Gray in question wrote hot checks as easily as some people breathe. Doubt it was her first rodeo. It was a great concept for which she can take absolutely no credit other than conning the right talent into making it happen. Agree whole-heartedly with 10:40 and 11:50. Thanks to kingfish for reporting this.

FYI...that obituary is not the same Cindy Gray. I bought an ad from her so I can verify - that is not the same Cindy Gray.
Awesome looking magazine - if it was simply a case of cash flow issues, I think she could have found a publisher to purchase the magazine or simply take it over, have a job working for them (in sales - obviously, she was great at that!), and keep from being a fugitive. She'll go to jail when they catch her. makes you wonder what drove her to make the choices she did.

Funny. Ms. Gray contacted me in Jan. 2012 about my not getting my subscription that I paid for.

sounds like the spitting image of Claiborne Frazier!!! wonder if they know each other

Desperate people do desperate things. What more needs to be said? Upon which public square do you jackals want her pilloried?

Anonymous said...

Shadow doesn't think this is newsworthy? How about all her subscribers and advertisers who now are out money? How about all the people who have hot checks on her? Perhaps knowing this will get someone scammed by her to go after her in court for passing bad checks, fraud, and more.

Shadowfax said...

You misjudge me 3:48. I'm only suggesting that the lady's plan did not materialize. check your hangin' rope at the door for a moment and think....Don't you know she is devastated that her dream got sidetracked and her publication didn't make it? Or do you simply want to hang by the neck until dead every son of a bitch who tries and fails?

Anonymous said...

5:16 - your comment is so off-base that it can only mean that you either do not know Cindy Gray at all or that you actually know her better than anyone else because you the culprit herself. The only thing that she is "devastated" about because it "got sidetracked" is the fact that her con artist ways are finally catching up with her. She knew her "publication didn't make it" the entire time she was selling ads to people & requesting payment up front from them & cashing their checks for something she knew was never even going to happen. On top of that, she was promoting that the magazine was even INCREASING the # of issues it would be publishing & used that to justify why she was increasing the cost & scamming advertisers to pay her up front. And yes 3:15, much like a female version of Claiborne Frazier.

Geesh, I leave you alone for how long shadow and you are able to continue to piss off many?

Slow down, you move too fast, you got to make the mornin' last.

"Garden & Guns" is by far the best out there... heck, I never even heard of "Mississippi Land & Lodges" before...

Shadowfax said...

I don't think I 'pissed off' anybody, Kangaroot. Merely offering an alternative view. Don't know the woman, never heard of her or this publication. Having watched this site for only a little less than a year, it's a well known fact that there are bleachers full of detractors ready to hang people without trial. They're the 'junior jackals'. Then there are the 'senior jackals' with you are more familiar.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
