D.L. Gardner: Fighting for Faith, Freedom, & Family

 Michael Flynn, President Trump’s former national security advisor, wrote an op-ed published in the Washington Journal earlier this month calling on Americans to return to “immortal truths upon which America was founded….” 

He wrote, “When fighting for truth, the most important place to start is to be well-grounded in the Truth itself. I am referring to Truth with a capital T, as in ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.’ Faith in God is an essential part of the fight to restore American greatness. Our personal faith is inextricably linked to our personal liberties.”


America is under attack from those promising progress by following science, political science, that is. For the first three months of 2020, they said COVID-19 was no threat. For the rest of 2020, they used the pandemic as a political weapon to divide us by fear and hate. Fear the virus and hate those who don’t. 


No doubt only a relatively few Americans today still hold the same convictions our founders had when they wrote the documents that established our experimental government. At the end of the 18th Century, most governments in Europe had monarchies. Colonists here could have followed that model. But, our founders wanted freedom from government! 


As school children used to recite, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Of course, this is at the top of our Declaration of Independence!


Noting this, Flynn wrote, “Faith in God is an essential part of the fight to restore American greatness. Our personal faith is inextricably linked to our personal liberties.” Then he quoted a couple of sentences from French author, Alexis de Tocqueville who wrote “Democracy in America” after visiting in 1831. 


De Tocqueville wrote, “Upon my arrival in the United States, the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention…. The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.”


Then Flynn noted, “Prior to America’s founding, no document in the world had directly linked the individual rights of citizens to their unique value and autonomy before an omnipotent Creator.”


Those visiting America today likely see no “religious aspect” of America. On the contrary, visitors are much more likely to see America as the Apostle Paul depicted the dearth of religion in his letter to the church in Rome: “[A]nd, although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”


Flynn’s op-ed was not only his personal testimony about God’s work in his life, but more so a call to patriots to fight to restore America to her founding Truth. 


After referencing writings of our founders, Flynn wrote, “The fight to protect the family is the cornerstone of our fight to save America. It is unlikely that anything else you do in life will be as important or as meaningful.” 


Let’s fight for our faith, our freedom, and our families against those hell-bent to destroy them all.

How ironic is it that a guy who was convicted for lying to the FBI and worked for the biggest liar in history is talking about "Truth" and "Faith in God."

I must agree with almost everything the writer says but I think it is important to put the founding fathers in perspective. Their founding documents represented their fine aspirations, not their convictions as demonstrated by so many of their actions. We aspire to be Christians, but our actions most often do not reflect that aspiration. The experiment is ongoing, we face one challenge after another, and we face many now. We must realize that the men in the past were just as imperfect as we are but they did not lose the faith. That's the main thing we should emulate about them. As long as we struggle we only lose when we lose the faith.

Most churches continue to follow masking protocols of their own denomination’s design today. Sad thing about it is their faith is put in man’s science and the progressive mindset, not God’s will for us to be free and happy. Faith in God alone and his love for us provided the spark for this countries origin, the lack of it is a result of where we are now. Better stand up in the congregation and fight, our children and grandchildren wont have an idea what it was like if we don’t...

Yes, I agree, we need to give up "man's science" of chlorinated water, sewage treatment plants, pharmaceuticals, air transport, rubber tires, air bags, CPR, and most especially, electrical current powering microchips in plastic boxes to transmit ignorance across insulated wires on steel towers. Afterall, its God's will.

This is the same Michael Flynn who pled guilty to lying and only avoided prison because of political intervention in the federal criminal prosecution. The same guy who suggested that the military should declare martial law to overturn the last presidential election. The same guy who is selling QAnon-branded merchandise.

I can't believe anyone would hold that guy up as an example of moral authority and expert on the values of the United States. Pitiful.

This article is truly sad and makes a mockery of the values of our founders. Character and morals matter. Mr. Flynn has neither. He is a convicted felon who received a pardon from the most criminal and corrupt president to ever hold that office. He sold out our country for $530,000.00 paid by the government of Turkey. Flynn broke the law for not registering as a foreign agent. When Trump's lies about election fraud failed, he had advocated for the overthrow of our duly elected president, Joe Biden, in what was the most accurate and secure presidential election in history. Flynn is a demonstrated and well documented liar. Both Flynn and Mr. Gardner are a disgrace. Read your Bible, Mr Gardner. It is a sin to tell lies and bear false witness against others. God will not be mocked. All will be held accountable before Him and not your false god, Donald Trump.

The hypocrisy of some posters on this particular subject is suffocating. The flip-flopping of the pompous self-righteous because of party affiliation is beyond ignorant. The willingness to crucify one person, but totally ignore the same or similar actions by their favored party members, reveals their lack of moral fortitude. I, and many, many others are sick of such behavior. The simplicity of honesty is imperative if our republic is to survive.

Surprised by these negative comments. If a blog in Mississippi has this many anti religious comments I can’t imagine the sentiment in blue states. Having a imperfect person say we must turn to God doesn’t make it untrue.

Someone should have read all of De Toqueville's observations about our new form of government.

And, of course, DL missed that our Founders were not so stupid as to believe that everyone was born with equal skills or talents or financial advantages. Equal had to do with having equal opportunity to realize whatever abilities we had and to be treated justice and fairness whether born rich or poor, genius or not so smart.

What I see is a country where Christians still enjoy going to church and where we all can raise our children with our moral values. I frankly don't see any " liberties" under serious threat other than the determinations for some to impose their evangelical or fundamentalist interpretations on me.

I do see science and education and truth and acquiring knowledge and civility under assault.

I also see that I should be forced to see some groups, despite their behavior not adversely affecting me and mine, as a threat and/or immoral, rather than to allow me to judge the individual based on words or deeds or violation of law. And, the were not so deluded as to think total happiness guaranteed or a right that could be decreed. They knew some people just could never be successful in pursuing happiness, we just shouldn't be making it impossible.

I find it particularly stunning that I am supposed to find those who damaged their brains with drug addiction or barely graduated from college or who have been diagnosed clinically with paranoia to be as credible as someone who has spent their life studying a subject and has achieved recognition from his or her colleagues.

I am supposed to fear that those of you who love your weapons, will have them seized for no reason and won't be allow the sport of owning one and denied the ability to defend yourselves.

As far as I can tell, there is no longer any rational conservatism left and perhaps, the pathologist who has found brain damage in those with Covid (including the asymptomatic cadavers who just suddenly died at various ages) is onto something.

Or it's mass hysteria.

Whatever is afflicting us, common sense and truth are the biggest casualties.

You like to literally pick and choose sentences and assume your rights are whatever you decide is great for you individually and to hell with who gets harmed.

Your ethics are "convenient" and " situational" with a moral compass that spins.

The ethical viewpoint for Americans and Christians is solely supposed to be " Do Unto Others as you would have them Do Unto You".

You cannot see past your own nose.

12:59 Until a few years ago, a common refrain from liberals was, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." When was the last time you heard a host on CNN or MSNBC offer that opinion?

Today people are fired for voicing their opinions on matters totally unrelated to the jobs. Today students have grades reduced, are failed, and even booted from schools for offering a dissenting opinions.
Don't deny it, a causal search of the internet confirms these occurrences. This month a suit was filed against a school in Nevada that is denying graduation to a student for his beliefs, not his academic lacking. So much for freedom of speech.

How about Los Angeles shutting down restaurants even after the businesses re-configured themselves for social distancing, when 40 feet away cafeteria styled tables are allowed with no distancing?

We have a Supreme Court justice griping that people attending blackjack tables have more protection than people attending churches. Freedom of assembly? Freedom of religion?

How about Secretaries of State making election rules that the constitution states is the responsibility of the state legislatures? With HR-1, Congress is giving the middle finger to the constitution on these election matters.

I haven't touched on second amendment restrictions.

A Clinton era staffer opined last week that "no where in the constitution does it state 'all this can be suspended due to a disease.'"

And you say civil liberties are not threatened.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.


In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
