State Auditor Shadrick White issued the following statement.
Today
State Auditor Shad White announced Special Agents from his office have
arrested Thomas Smith, a former Oktibbeha County Road Department
employee. Smith was arrested after he was indicted for embezzlement.
A $657.20 demand letter was presented to Smith when he was arrested.
The demand amount includes interest and investigative expenses.
Smith
is accused of embezzling fuel by siphoning it out of a county-owned
truck. Smith purportedly hid fuel containers on the side of the road so
he could stop and siphon fuel from the truck into
the containers. Smith would allegedly return to the location in a
personal vehicle to retrieve the fuel he had siphoned. Investigators
determined this scheme lasted from June 2019 to August 2019.
Smith surrendered to Special Agents at the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s office. Bond was set at $5,000 by the court.
No
surety bond covers Smith’s employment as an employee of Oktibbeha
County. Surety bonds are similar to insurance designed to protect
taxpayers from corruption. Smith will remain liable for the
full amount of the demand in addition to criminal proceedings. The case
will be prosecuted by the office of District Attorney Scott Colom.

Glad to see Shadrick going after the big time criminals. We can all sleep safer knowing this dangerous felon with a siphon hose is no longer preying on our community.
Shad, Canton. We are still waiting Shad. CANTON.
Several dollars in gas plus investigation costs... they spent more writing that press release than the dollar amount of gas stolen.
Please tell me this is a joke. Did this narrow ass publicity hound really feel the need to push out a press release for this? There has to be a think tank in the northeast somewhere that could use another latte swilling, metrosexual chode.
How badly would it suck to go to jail for being so stupid as to steal something of so little value? While there's rarely justification for stealing something of any value, this guy is going to go to jail for not wanting to pay for a few tanks of gas! Sheesh!
I suppose it's good that so many criminals are incredibly stupid!
It NEVER stops.
Gee, you go arrest somebody and make a press release for someone that stole probably $100 worth of gas. This seems kind of petty to me. I know, I know, stealing is stealing but seems this could have been handled without so much hoopla. If the guy was an otherwise good employee, you could have made him pay back the gas money and told him not to try that crap again.
Get 'em all!!! (But maybe roll a few of these small guys together in one press release next time? I'm glad they got the guy, but it was a letdown to see that this statement was all about $650 in gas.)
What an idiot
Geez- Shad must have already shot his wad to resort to these "high crimes" against the State...
Every now and then a criminal prosecution will tell more about the prosecutors than the criminal. This is one of those times. A revealing episode.
I agree that this was small potatoes, but maybe they put out the press release to put all public service employees on notice that they will go after any theft of public property not matter the size. If they will bust a smalltime dumbass for stealing $650 in gas, then they sure as hell will go after the bigger fish. Just a thought.
I’m glad they put out the press release. It’s good to let the little guy know they’ll go to jail for little crimes. Now if we could just get Shad to look into Canton, CMU, and Canton school district.
Can't we just be glad a crook is caught. This guy's act was intentional. The method (hiding, siphoning, etc.) clearly shows it was intentional, and not just an accident or oversight or misunderstanding. If we want this stuff to stop, we have to try and clean it up. Why are so many criticizing Shad in this deal? I hope he catches them all, and puts out a press release on each one.
@10:24 "then they sure as hell will go after the bigger fish."
But, they haven't. And, they won't. It's all politics and dirty politics at that.
Shad and Stacey did their jobs on CMU.
The problem is Lynn won't do HER job.
Most of you people are part of the problem that you always cry about. This is a person who was committing a crime and stealing, very intentionally, directly from the taxpayers. Yet all you can say is "Yay, Shad going after the big fish. What a waste of time." Well I hope you all own a business where people steal and shoplift from you. Let us know so that we can all say "Well, it wasn't that much money. Quit your bitchin."
Misdemeanor misappropriation of public property. Fire him, make him pay, and write it up in the annual Exception Report. This isn't worth a press release.
I think it's important for public employees to know they can't get away with this junk. I don't understand why people are criticizing the publication of this investigation and arrest.
If we can't do the little things well, we won't be able to do the big things well. That's a huge lesson I learned from team sports (for those who also like to put down on those).
Still waiting on status of Unv of Ms professor case that auditors office filed? Seems the professor hired an attorney smarter than the auditor.
I think the message here is that Shad is gonna bust you whether you embezzle 5 million or $500 bucks and he wants them to know that. Stealing is stealing!! Wrongdoing and corruption has no and knows no size limits. Again, say what you want but you gotta be honest enough to admit that Shad is on the job and he is getting it done. Keep busting them Shad - big or small. BTW, I bet all the wrongdoers out there ain't sleeping too good these days and their fingernails are chewed slap off. I'd be shittin' my pants too if I were them.
Remind me after Hurricane Katrina the Ms National Guard set up a fuel tanker on Riverside Drive so employees could have gas to come to work. Seems large number of employees came to work in a different vehicle every day & fill up with gas everyday!
Maybe it'll calm some folks down to know that he was WHITE. I think that is the way things work now.
(He looks white, anyway.)
For all you keyboard cowboys out there....
Embezzlement by a public employee is a felony. Making a big deal out of small potatoes prevents folks from stealing in the first place - or at least it should. Knowing he'd have to give up any firearms he owns might have been enough to prevent him - or anyone else - from stealing *insignificant* amounts of money.
I hope this guy likes bow hunting, because that's all he's about to be able to do.
@11:30 the AG's office has to file any suit on behalf of the state. So you really mean "smarter than anyone at the AG's office"...but then again it's not hard to be that.
"Shad and Stacey did their jobs on CMU." They need to be looking at the other departments and department heads as well.
State Auditor's hands are somewhat tied on municipal governments.
I love this guy! Go get em' Shad! Somebody give him a banjo
@9:58
Cannot decide...friend of Thomas or getting nervous Shad may be coming for you next?
On CMU and the "AG not doing her job", I believe Lynn Fitch was very tight with Jim Herring. I think he was on her transition team and he was also her campaign finance chairman. He lives in Canton. Could that be the reason that she leaves Canton alone?
While we're talking about the AG, Kingfish, can you start filing public records requests to show when the lawsuits were originally filed?
I want to know how many of these are Hood-holdovers.
$657.20? not worth the trouble to prosecute, should of just fired him.
In the last 5 years Madison County BOS has cycled through 2 or 3 comptrollers and working on the 4th. You'd think it would be worth taking a look see there!!
Siphoning some fuel here, stealing some stamps and boxes of copy paper there...next thing you know the taxpayers are getting bent over for another beef plant or more clean coal plants!
@3:32 Now that's funny right there! Ain't it the truth!
@10:24 am I could not agree more!!
Kingfish - Please cite your evidence to support your belief that Shad 'did his job' in Canton. Thanks in advance.
Any of you folks criticizing Shad live in Jackson? How's looking the other way while petty crime turns into felonies working out for you there?
Send Shad to DC. Also time to go after Canton and Jackson
All you folks that have anointed Shad as the Second Coming seem to also hate Phil Bryant. That doesn't add up and it's funny to me. Shad is doing some good things no doubt, but no doubt he's also covering some ass. His goal is his political future and that is evident by his attention whoring and the directions he won't look. That bubble is gonna burst before it's over.
Remember also the 100 million dollar Tanf funds. This is a good message. Corruption and theft of state funds will absolutely not be tolerated. Whether is is one cent or a 100 million dollars. Corruption is root cause of the problems Mississippi faces.
