Did lockdowns actually prevent the spread of Covid-19? More than a few people are asking that question. The Associated Press reported:
Despite their differing approaches, California and Florida have experienced almost identical outcomes in COVID-19 case rates....
California and Florida both have a COVID-19 case rate of around 8,900 per 100,000 residents since the pandemic began, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And both rank in the middle among states for COVID-19 death rates — Florida was 27th as of Friday; California was 28th.
Connecticut and South Dakota are another example. Both rank among the 10 worst states for COVID-19 death rates. Yet Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, a Democrat, imposed numerous statewide restrictions over the past year after an early surge in deaths, while South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, issued no mandates as virus deaths soared in the fall....
Like Florida, Missouri had no statewide mask mandate, ended business restrictions last June and has a cumulative COVID-19 death rate similar to California’s. In the absence of statewide orders, many of the largest cities in Florida and Missouri imposed their own mask requirements and business restrictions. In Missouri, that meant about half the population was still subject to mask mandates..... Rest of article.
Let the sniping begin.

Lockdowns are just another totalitarian control attempt by the left. Komply komrade! No mask? To the gulag!
The left was driven to do two things unrelated to health. #1 Crash the economy an pretend that somehow it was Trump's fault. #2 Pretend we must isolate as much as possible and then use that fear to destroy as many election safeguards much as as possible. And because of those they were able to steal an election when they had no chance. We Americans forgot what 'lockdown' was for: #1 Buy time to produce badly needed supplies and equipment. #2 Flatten the curve so that hospitals wouldn't be overrun. That's it. Once those two were done, lockdowns should have ended. Instead too many folks acted like lockdown were so we could 'wait out' the virus. That was never the plan and couldn't work.
Sometimes public health concerns warrant restrictions. But, who amongst us thinks rights (e.g., assembly, speech) were protected and not unnecessarily impinged?

Lockdowns don’t work when people like the first two posters just ignore them.
10pm didn't read the AP article. Data is clear from two sets of similar states with diametrically opposed responses, namely FL vs CA and CT vs SD: no significant difference in outcomes measured as positive cases when the treatments were different (close the economy vs not close).
Once again, white liberals are destroying our way of life. Not sure yet if on purpose.
No shit

Do you know where the US policy on lockdowns originated? Answer- a 14 year old girl from New Mexico. https://clashdaily.com/2020/05/how-a-14-yr-old-girls-science-project-led-to-global-lockdowns-during-the-covid-10-pandemic/
Did you know that 78% of covid deaths are directly linked to obesity? Mandatory workouts and weight loss would save far more lives.
Mississippi is the nations most obese state. Some groups are as much as 80% obese. Had these groups been told to lose 5-10lbs a month during lockdowns, covid deaths and other health epidemics would be greatly reduced.
Although, according to the cdc websites masks make no statistical difference for covid transmissions. While true, had obese people kept their masks on to prevent ingestion of a poor diet, they would save more lives.
I realize this may be insensitive to fat people. It is hard to confront a health crisis if you do not acknowledge the fact that roughly 400k covid deaths are directly attributed to being fat.
Florida, of course, has a significantly older population than California. If adjusted for age, Florida's numbers would look much better than California's, not just about the same.
A huge conspiracy by the chicoms and demcoms, period.
Moral of the story: Don't let doctors and epidemiologists make policy. They can advise policy makers, but ultimately policy affects more than just health.
Just because there were lockdowns/restrictions does not mean that the people complied with said lockdowns/restrictions.
Wear an effin' mask!
new zealand, australia, taiwan. lockdowns worked in those countries because of the level of compliance
the usa is a model of how to pandemic fail.
Nope - CNN and NPR told me that Desantis was a murderer and Newsom and Cuomo were Saints, so I must believe them.
Its been over a year and i never once wore a cuck muzzle and I am still alive and a free man. Free of fear. Unlike the panty pissers and covid sheeple. Not a single one of you chicken livers have had the guts to say anything directly to the FREE MAN walking around without his face diaper!
Level of mask compliance had no effect on the spread of the virus. We've known this was true the entire 20th century. Quarantine is for the sick, not the healthy. The CDC published this just prior to the China virus panic. The push was to enact the goals of the liberals.
96% compliance in Rhode Island:
https://www.andrewbostom.org/2021/03/despite-96-mask-compliance-every-time-they-go-out-highest-in-the-u-s-during-the-fall-of-2020-rhode-island-still-had-an-enormous-fall-covid-19-infection-spike/
The CDC released a meta-analysis in May 2020 of 14 controlled, extended trials studying the effects of mask usage. The study found no reduction in the rate of laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza, a similar respiratory illness.

Politicized Science for economic gain. Was in Texas this past week and the only thing open was Abbots mouth. Everything is still essentially locked down with the bullshit criteria still in place. This country is filled with sheep and chicken little's, and all over a bad cold virus. I do believe when cooler heads prevail this will be found to be not that much at all and we can all sit around together drinking beer laughing it off. Yeah, right.
Some points to ponder:
No one speeds on the highways because there are speed limit signs because the majority of people want to follow the rules, but the remaining few who don't fear the consequences of breaking the law. Right or wrong?
There is no illegal drug use because of the laws against them because the majority of people want to follow the rules, but the remaining few who don't fear the consequences of breaking the law.
Right or wrong?
There is no violent crime because of the laws against it because the majority of people want to follow the rules, but the remaining few who don't fear the consequences of breaking the law..
Right or wrong?
The are no morons because...oh, wait, no laws. That's why society is up to its collective ass in morons. There ought be a law.
@11:23 AM. Silly boy - masks aren't required in your mom's basement.
AP? Pshhhh. I stopped reading when they compared Florida’s numbers to that of California’s.
Men who would give up liberty for safety deserve neither safety or liberty.
@12:23
a basement in Mississippi? You must be one of those people who still think you can buy “tin foil” at the Piggly Wiggly.
Journal of American Medical Association: "An increasing number of ecological studies have also provided persuasive evidence that universal mandatory mask wearing policies have been associated with reductions in the number or rate of infections and deaths.
This association is strengthened because, in many cases, other mitigation strategies (eg, school and workplace closures, recommendations for social distancing, hand hygiene) had already been deployed before enactment of mask wearing policies, after which the reductions were observed.
A study that examined changes in growth rates for infections in 15 states and the District of Columbia before and after mask mandates showed that rates were growing before the mandates were enacted and slowed significantly after, with greater benefit the longer the mandates had been in place."
And let's try to be not laughably insane when we describe "lockdowns" in the US as actually being locked down. Puhleeze.
Some countries would not allow someone out on their own balcony or in their backyard.
Good grief. Our "lockdowns" were extremely limited in comparison. And, likewise, Sweden, which swore it had such success with no lockdowns, is now ravaged and locked down.
Spare us the Covidiot conspiracy theories everyday.
Chicken Little @12:59 PM
I can’t even imagine what it must be like to be filled with such cowardice over a virus that killed less than 2% of the population.
Right now according to google there have been 121M total cases; 68.8M recoveries and only 2.68M deaths worldwide. That is literally a nothingburger!
Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana had about 7500 citizens killed during WWII, with Mississippi having about 1600 of that number.
The same three states have already lost 27,500 people to COVID-19, with Mississippi having almost 7000 of that number.
I think most would agree that the WWII numbers are pretty much now fixed in history but the COVID-19 will rise, even if it is just a few.
Very early in this (1st quarter of 2020) I posted that if Mississippi didn't get a handle on it immediately, there would be 250-500,000 cases and 5-10,000 deaths at the very least. That got all sorts of negative responses. I also used Vietnam as an example. Vietnam, a country of 100,000,000 people, has had 2600 cases and 30-40 deaths. Similarly, China, with 1,400,000,000 people, has had about 90,000 cases and about 4600 deaths. Even taking into account the near-certainty that China's numbers are at least double and possibly up to 5x the official numbers, the fact remains that real lockdowns did work. While it may be reasonable to debate risk-vs-reward, the degree to which a true lockdown stems the spread of things like SARS-CoV-19 and COVID-19 - regardless of other societal effects - has been pretty well demonstrated by real-world situations. I would point out that both Vietnam and China were able to relax restrictions much faster, so there was a choice - a shorter real lockdown and quicker recovery from its effects or a Mississippi-style (and other states, too) "mandate," from which full recovery is not certain.
Keyboard Kommando @1:29 PM.
Missed the connection of scientific illiteracy and callous disregard of other Americans to bravery. My DD214 doesn't have an entry for that. Yours?
Dear Mask Dont Work People:
Please understand that if the mask is just cloth or a loose fit or you don't cover your damn nose or , it doesn't.
It is a reduction of 50% not a guarantee you won't get it. But, IF you do, not having as great a viral load will help.
Some of you just can't seem to comprehend the basics of airborne viruses.
@3:03 I don't know if a shorter hard core lock down would have saved MS but I do know that I did follow he rules. For 2 weeks in March I did not encounter another human. I live alone was lucky enough to work from home and I followed the rules to flatten the curve.
I also continued to follow that directive until late May early June.
While I watched others socialize in small groups and use various definitions to justify not being alone.
There is no way in America to force compliance.
So what I also know is, I did my part and I am done.
Why should those of us who are healthy, face mental damage from isolation while others enjoy life? And I lost a close relative to the illness, so I am not discounting its existence.
Quarantine for any extended time for the non-infirm and non-elderly was a dumb plan.
It did not work and never will.
Time to move on and the only legit fear I see, is the fear that so many Karens and Chicken Littles will never allow that.
I heard that a large employer in the area had a recent outbreak.
Which I personally see no real cause for alarm because that has been my stance all year, but it does seem odd that MS media outlets are not crying that the sky is falling and over dramatizing the outbreak, if accurate.
Almost like it does not fit the narrative or that the virus is less beneficial now.
My mother was in a nursing home isolated from her family. We literally did not touch her for nine months. There was 100% compliance with mask wearing in her facility. She still died of COVID. Mask wearing and social isolation are not foolproof. Given a choice, she probably would have preferred to see us as much as she wanted and die in the first month vs live for nine months without touching or seeing her family in person (instead of through a window or plexiglass). Quality of life matters.
Shocker! Cardiologists say lose weight and COVID risks drop.

Ditch the chips and beer. You will live longer and your knees will thank you.
4:38 pm Your argument is flawed.
The lockdown was not universally executed or enforced.
Your mental well being is on you. I ‘d have preferred to socialize other than FaceTime and phone calls and texts. but I used the time to reorganize my home and get rid of clutter and garden and read to learn new things and work on self improvement generally. I donated “ entertainment/ clothing money” to good causes including continuing to pay those who had been providing services to me but who had little to no work. I found a new hobby too .
LTCs on lockdown had no means of testing their employees who weren’t locked down so yes, that didn’t work perfectly. It would have been worse with more exposure.
I’d like to be able to find excuses for those of you who not only caused more cases and deaths but have variants a way to mutate. There are no excuses . You are self centered or lack empathy for others or are deliberately ignorant so as to delusionally rationalize or can own up to being wrong ever.
The numbers in the USA are improving for two reasons
1-We lead the world in cases. And most that had it will have immunity for a while-so there's a lot of people who join the 40% who are naturally immune. (or so we were told 40% of us have antibodies already..)
2-Vaccinations. We are taking shots to dig out of the hole. Its working
So--there's a fourth wave upon us, but not here. We can expect one once the vaccinations slow, and the people that don't want a vaccine, or had covid and think they have a lifetime of immunity get it...
its not a scare tactic. look at covid from a world-wide perspective...
