Lumumba said state does not pay for water.
The Mississippi State Department of Health paid $360,000 to the city of Jackson since over the last three years for water/sewer services. The payments completely contradict Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba's recent claims the state of Mississippi does not pay Jackson for water. JJ obtained the payment records through a public records request.
Mayor Lumumba told the New York Times in a March 12 article:
Its troubles also mirror those of another capital city, Washington, D.C., where large numbers of government properties pay no property tax. Mr. Lumumba said the city “provides water for the state of Mississippi, but we don’t get paid for the water we provide to them. If we simply charged the state like any other customer, we’d be in a lot better position.” Article.
Unfortunately, the Mayor's statement is not true. The records show below the Health Department alone paid Jackson $360,583 since January 2018 for water/sewer services. The Health Department is not the only state agency that pays for its water. JJ reported Friday:
The Department of Finance and Administration reported the Capitol Complex alone paid $205,477 since June 2020...
The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce paid Jackson $47,035 for water/sewer services since August 2019.
Add it all up and it means the state pays Jackson a handsome sum of money every month for water/sewer services. There are some cases where the state has not paid for water and that is when the agency does not get a bill. The State Veterans Home in West Jackson is a perfect example of Jackson's incompetence.
The city did not bill the facility for water/sewer services for four years prior to December. The city sent a regular bill to agency in December, which it promptly paid. However, the city has yet to bill the Mississippi VA this year. Earlier post.
Kingfish note: Regardless of what the Mayor tells the media, the state does indeed pay for its water. One must ask why the media does not question the Mayor about his false statements.

How hard is it to ask, "Mayor, did you deliberately mislead the national press when you told them that the State of Mississippi does not pay Jackson for water/sewer usage at state owned buildings located inside Jackson? Or were you just unaware that what you said was false?"
investigative reporting by the NYT is dead
Just as Chowkey says Jackson is now hotter, wetter and colder than ever in recorded history. All bullshit. Antard owns the local media because he's figured out from experience that they will never fact check and challenge his claims.
Fish has to post his daily racist hate bait.
Cue the racist comments... 3...2...1
Fish has to post his daily racist hate bait.
And you've dropped by again to deposit a wet pile on the lawn.
10:03. . .I'll bite. The racists are those who look for racism in EVERYTHING. Sorry if that offends your delicate psyche!
There is no representation by KF in this post that the Mayor of Jackson lied because of his race. There are politicians and elected officials of ALL RACES that don't know how to tell the truth.
10:03 AM
What does race have to do with this? The one race comment is yours.
to 10:03...If the shoe fits, wear it!!!!
@10:03a- You are disgusting. Stating facts (with proof) is not race nor hate baiting. Grow up!!
Agree with @9:35. Seems as though the mayor either provided incorrect info (either intentionally or ignorantly) or the writer made an error (either intentionally or ignorantly). Either way, the mayor should address it if he values the trust of his constituents.
Ok, I find it mildly interesting how so many individuals comment about something as "racist hate bait" or something similar. The reason it is so interesting is that nearly everything where this type of comment is used, there is nothing racial about the subject matter.
The individual commenting is the racist. They look at everything with race-colored glasses and see racism in everything that they read/see. Because no one is complaining enough about their pet project since there is no overt racism, they have to make it up, just so they can continue to be a victim.
And don't get me wrong, this isn't JUST a "race" thing. This victimhood dance goes on under numerous perceived slights.
Want your comment posted, quit typing in all caps. GOT IT?
I've said for years that the other 49 states love to use Mississippi as a whipping boy on all things racial so they can deflect from the myriad race issues in their own backyards. Just look at what happened in other states a year ago during the George Floyd/BLM protests. Mississippians were calm and came together to address the flag situation while places like Seattle and Portland burned.
But that doesn't fit the agitprop that the NYT and other MSM baiters desperately want to push about the Magnolia State. To them, it's still 1955 and white sheeted Klansmen are walking the streets of Jackson.
They didn't investigate because this is what they WANT the truth to be - that a largely white state government is oppressing the black leadership of a black city. Forget that black mayors and have led the city for over a quarter century and that 6 of seven councilmen are liberal Democrats and have been for years. None of that fits the narrative. They didn't fact check Chokwe because that would be racist, but implying that black leadership cannot do the job because of white people is basically marching in solidarity with Martin Luther King, at least in their eyes.
Don't hold your breath for fair treatment from the NYT. They need Mississippi to be a racist pariah state. Otherwise they might have to look at their own racist city and state, and that just won't do.
I guess the concept of a “racist dog whistle” escapes the bumpkin commenters.
Of course Kingfish can’t come right out and be racists. He just baits the racists and approves their thinly veiled hate speech.
Wow. This is instructive. The crowd attacking me for a so-called racist post say nothing about the Mayor intentionally lying to the media about the state not paying its water bills. Never mind he lies over and over again about it, the person pointing it out must be racist. Has to be.
And some of you readers are just plain stupid. You assume approving a comment with personal approval or agreement. I allow people to have the right to be stupid and sometimes approve comments that do exactly just that.
Notice how the commentor did not actually quote anything racist (if such a quote existed), he just called everyone here racist. Not one racist comment has been made here.
I've got news for my lil commentor. You'd be amazed at how many blacks see through that crap you threw out. More than you think.
Kingfish,
You allow people to mock Mayor Lumumba’s African name. That is absolutely racist. Very white supremacist.
Maybe all of you should rethink your slave names. I bet most of you are too stupid to understand that.
Oh really? People also call Tate "Tater" on here. Do you get mad about that? People make fun of politicians names all the time, crybaby. Hood was called The Hair. Hell, Delbert made jokes about his name in commercials. Readers call Mayor Mary The Queen.
Matter of fact, you just inspired me. The Hinds County Board of Supervisors will henceforth be called Archie & the Nutheads. Or should it be Jugheads?
I figured you would pull that one. Apples and Oranges.
The attacks on Mayor Lumumba’s name are mocking his ethnic heritage. It’s just like mocking a Jewish name. You would never approve Noseberg, would you?
My Email to the NYT with links to KF's article. Over/under if they make a correction or respond?
While it may not fit the narrative the New York Times tries to make of Mississippi, the current inept mayor of Jackson Mississippi lied to your correspondent Richard Fausset to sensationalize a crisis, the Rham Emauel comment “never let a serious crisis go to waste”(it’s also in the article), to take the heat off of himself and his misdealing’s. I implore you and your editors and contributors to take a look at what good investigative journalism is in the two articles below. No spin, simply truth. Truth that our mayor did not tell your correspondent about and truth that your editors decided not to fact check. Sensational journalism at its finest and a paper like the New York Times should know better. Jacksons water woes aren’t about racism, white flight, or government offices not paying the bills. While we do have an infrastructure issue, you can’t spend money on maintenance when you don’t bill your biggest users. Also, I bet Lumumba didn’t go into the $90million lawsuit against Siemens for faulty water meters where his attorney cronies from out of state walked away with a third($30mil) the city could have really used. If he cared about this city and its water infrastructure, he would have hired a local attorney for a lot less than that. The suit was pretty cut and dry. He will not answer where the money is for fixing the infrastructure. Also there has been a 1% sales tax in place for a few years that isn’t being used wisely for infrastructure. He wont mention much on that either. Links below:

I would love to see the NYT or the author of that article, Richard Fausset publish a correction on the story, but I am not holding my breath. It is unchecked reporting like this article that erode the faith in good, honest news.
People need to start pushing back on this unchecked woke mob going on. I have never written a news outlet before today. It used to be a thing people did. That's how the media has ended up like they have posting sensationalized stories "just because" to try and stir up clicks.
1003, 1132, 1127, 1142.......just letting you know
Walgreens has a sale on Tampons till tomorrow!!!!!! Also you might want to get some Midol to go along with 'em, cause it sounds y'all's is really hurting.
Kingfish...I personally like Archie and the Jugheads.
@11:44 I was thinking of emailing the NYT myself and actually may do so. I think your email says what we are all thinking. Why is Mayor Lumumba ignoring the facts? The State of MS has been paying their water bills probably since the dawn of time. Just another ploy to make himself look like a hero.
And KF in a nutshell described why Jxn is doomed.
We cannot all agree that poor leadership is bad because it simply must be a skin color debate.
Chokwe will win again and his constituents will be in shock when they have no water again soon.
But it will for sure be about race...no matter what.
I see that Lumumba's people have now turned this story away from his bald-faced lie to the NYT about the state not paying water bills to the city, and redirected it toward whether KF is in fact a racist. That's how problems in Jackson don't get fixed.
Bravo 12:23!!!! You are right.
No one in Jackson wants to even attempt to address the real problems, like crime, crumbling infrastructure, etc. all while fussing about the tax base leaving Jackson. Guess what Jackson, if a business can't get water reliably to their business, why would they want to come to Jackson? or their employees get to Jackson without blowing out a tire on a pothole?
Disclosure: No part of this comment is intended to have any racial overtones whatsoever.
What does lying save to do with race?
March 22, 2021 at 11:12 AM says: I guess the concept of a “racist dog whistle” escapes the bumpkin commenters.

"racist dog whistle"
"thinly veiled hate speech"
"bumpkin"
Lying is a racist dog whistle.
@12:14
I see you figured out misogyny. I hope you don’t hurt your female loved ones with your sexism. Do you feel like a big strong macho man?
The whole truth is, these nancy boys with this is racist, that is racist are the progressives who choose to live the DIM-O-KRATIC lifestyle and when their lying leaders are caught red handed telling lies or faced with the truth, all they can do is yell racist. They want to lie down with the yellow dogs, then they should STFU about fleas and fleecing's!
Then again, you kind of feel sorry for them, because they don't really understand that they're stupid and with their city crashing down around them, they refuse to face the facts and justify their racist beliefs and responses by yelling racist to people who haven't lived in Jackson for forty years or ever.
We can't help it, that growing up they had no friends or self esteem at school or were the last ones picked for kick ball or got the trophy for coming in last. So now they look for others like them self, so they can say they have friends and say they belong to a group of progressive voters, but still end up going home alone or with last of the ugly girls/guys in their watering hole. No matter how they hate it, the facts show they're wrong on every count. Oh yea, just because the mayor has an unpronounceable name doesn't mean he's embraced his African roots. He's only pandering to a bunch of low IQ voters and progressive wanna be's.
A day has 24-hours.
A year has 365 days.
A week has seven days.
The mayor lied about or was ignorant about the State paying water bills.
Which of these facts is racist?
Anyone who complains that Jackson’s problems are due to racism would be more believable if they showed evidence to back up their claims.
@4:24
Please visit the Mississippi Civil Rights museum and tell us how many generations you think it takes to recover from over a century of slavery and political, educational, and economic disengagement.
Give us a number please.
You tell 'em MR. Fish. Don't be intimidated.
Was Kenneth Stokes being a racist when he called Lumumba a liar?
5:05: How can the current state of the city infrastructure be the result of "from over a century of slavery and political, educational, and economic disengagement"?
Unless, you are really suggesting that the black leaders of Jackson cannot reasonably be expected to perform their duties competently, because they are the product of "many generations" of oppression. That, my dear, is patently racist.
You asked for a number: 24. That's how many years it's been since Jackson had a white mayor. Jackson's water problems appear to result from mismanagement, corruption, cronyism, incompetence, and probably some other things. The only way racism can be on the list is if 24 years is not long enough to work out and implement a viable plan to address Jackson's infrastructure needs.
No 2:48, just a man who knows what is going on and know that it's all you little bleeding hearts fault.
Enjoy the blight that your blue vote brings. Don't forget to make your Walgreens run, if you're going to hang around in sh*thole, you might wanna pick up some Lysol also.
ooops!
