A Hinds County grand jury indicted Christopher Butler on August 3 for one count of possession of a cellphone in a correctional facility. The indictment states:
on or about June 12, 20 16, Christopher Butler did knowingly, unlawfully and feloniously, possess a cell phone to wit: a black Tracfone Serial Number O 14262001908813 while he was an inmate/ offender at the Jackson Detention Center, a correctional facility, located in Jackson, Mississippi , in violation of Section 47-5-193 of the Mississippi Code, 1972, as amended. The case is assigned to none other than Judge Jeff Weill. The indictment also seeks to classify Butler as a habitual offender since he was previously convicted of two felonies. It states he was convicted in 2000 for the sale of cocaine and in 1996 for possession of cocaine.
Butler was arrested earlier this year after the Attorney General charged him with several counts of consumer fraud. The AG arrested Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith for allegedly illegally assisting Butler while he was in jail. Earlier post on arrest.

Little FYI: there was incriminating evidence on that phone linking to Shuler-Smith.
The ACLU and Amnesty International will assert that it's his constitutional right to be able to establish and maintain contact with the outside world while incarcerated.
Just wondering - when was the last time a criminal received a grand jury indictment for having a cellphone in the jail?
Understand that this is a very unusual case with particular circumstances - circumstances that probably include the FYI in 2:48's comment, thus the indictment.
How was he supposed to keep up with everyone on facebook? People have already forgot about the prisoner who posted on facebook he was going to get out of jail to go to the fair. He even posted a pic of himself eating a turkey leg in his jail cell when he got back from the fair.
I'm wondering if RSS delivered that phone to "Too Sweet"? After all, an attorney does have the right/obligation to keep in touch with a client!
