Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba is holding his regular press conference right now. It is live-streamed below.
The Mayor held his press conference at the JPD Real-Time Crime Center.
* Flanked by Jackson firefighters, Mayor Lumumba honored firefighters William Slaughter, John Robertson, Anthony Washington, Jr., Eric Gibbs, Eric Washington, and Frederick Reed for saving a citizen's life. The Mayor lauded the Fire Department, stating it is one of the higher ranked fire departments in the state.
* As all precinct commanders stood by his side, the Mayor said "the numbers bore out" crime is falling in Jackson. However, the Mayor has not provided any crime statistics for over three years. The manager of Char presented gift cards to the leadership of Precinct 3 crime fell 11% in the precinct. Chief Wade said Precinct had the largest reduction in crime.
* National Night Out will be held on October 24.
* The city will install 25 new blue-light cameras around the city.
* Mayor Lumumba said his administration did not "defund the internal audit department." He said the funds for the internal audit were in the budget but the City Council removed it. He said the City Council hired the employees. He said the city did not kick them out of their office as claimed by City Council President Aaron Banks. However, he said they were locked out of their computers since they were no longer going to be working for the administration. WLBT reported the news last week. "Even when others choose violence, we are going to choose peace," said the Mayor.
* WAPT's Scott Simmons asked how much the cameras cost. The Mayor said it cost $247,000. Chief Wade said the funds were already in the budget. The city will hire five more employees to work in the real-time crime center.
* Chief Wade said the city is going to purchase license plate readers. The city does not have such technology.
* The Colonial Circle bridge is not yet open as it awaits final inspection.

No hard facts and stats, just empty platitudes and ambiguity.
Well done Capital Police.
What 1:34 said. Thank you, Capital Police for reducing crime in the Capital City!
At this point why is anything he says relevant. The local news media should just not show up for these propaganda sessions. Blah blah blah. The only progress being made is with the water/sewer systems, only because the federal courts to control away from the mayor.
Hopefully in two years the citizens will elect a new mayor with a vision to turn the city around. If not residents who can afford to leave will continue to do so.
The Mayor said the internal auditors were not thrown out of their offices and in fact they're in their offices today. He said they did restrict their computer access which is standard procedure when someone is no longer working for the city. The second part of that seems reasonable. But I'm curious if they're no longer working for the city, then why are they in their offices still? And what are they doing in their offices?
LOL - If crime is truly falling he can thank the black & white SUV's with blue lights that seem to be EVERYWHERE! Now would be an appropriate occasion to roll that footage of the high-speed chase through downtown without JPD in pursuit...
If he has the crime numbers in order to say "the numbers bore out" that crime has gone down and he has the numbers to say crime in Precinct 3 has gone down 11%, why has the City not posted those numbers for the past 3 years, and is he going to start posting them now ?
Crime is down? I don’t think the families of the four Jackson weekend murder victims will agree with those statistics.
Ditto 1:34 and 1:49
So the mayor is ok proceeding with the RFP for ambulatory services despite a pending lawsuit, but still blames the pending Richard's lawsuit as the reason he can't issue an RFP for garbage services? Convenient....
It's "Capitol" Police, not "Capital" Police.
Will the new license plates readers, read paper tags?
Lil chokey likes them cameras it seems. Somebody might outta check into the purchase of these and play spot the grift. Does Richards IT dept get to set em up and manage them or something? It’s a shame, you can run your car into a cave with some of the potholes but we’re spending hundreds of thousands on crime fighting cameras with cool blue lights.
G.
Will the license tags of FOCs (Friends of Chowke) be removed from the tag reader database?
Boggles my mind that none of the media attending these press conferences seems to be able or willing to ask the Mayor a few basic questions, such as:
You claim to have crime numbers to support your contention that crime is going down in the City and that Precinct 3 had an 11% reduction in crime last month, so why have you not posted the crime stats on the City website for over 3 years now, and are you going to start posting crime stats again ?
With the reduction in crime in Precinct 3, do you attribute any of that reduction to the involvement and assistance of the Capitol Police ? Do you give them any credit for that reduction ? Do they get gift cards too for their help ?
"Chief Wade said the city is going to purchase license plate readers. The city does not have such technology."
So what was the technology several years back that detected moving violations and identified the drivers? People freaked out and screamed privacy issue when they received tickets in the mail, so the use of said technology was halted.
4:32pm, you’re letting facts get in the way of a good story Bumbles is trying to take credit for.
The media is a joke my friend at 4:32.
They no longer bother with factual or important issues in their reporting.
Unless of course, there is a racist slanted agenda to be peddled.
It's just the way its done now.
Unless Ted Henefin is going to operate the cameras they’ll all be out of commission within 6 months of installation. The mayor’s administration is too incompetent to maintain red lights. But they’re going to operate cameras? Riiiiiiiiight.
Remember the pothole repair trucks the city doesn’t use? I bet the contracts for the purchase of the cameras are going to a crony of the mayor. Probably the same outfit that has the Richards Garbage IT contract.
Will the new license plate readers be able to read tags when someone places gray or smoked plastic over the license plate?
Why do people do this?
Isn't it illegal?
Asking for a friend.
Calling Socrates Camera, BLLC.
@4:32 the only question I can answer for you. It's because they're a state agency & aren't allowed to accept gifts. I know we aren't allowed to.
Kudos to the firefighters! I wonder how much easier your jobs are now that reliable water service has been restored and you have more working fire plugs.
Cameras have been effective for decades in cities all across the U.S. to both respond to crime quicker and identify the culprits.
I have not notice ANY politician in either party do other than tout success and caste blame when they screw up.
All I can do is keep score. I wish the rest of you would, but these days, everyone seems blinded by the "party label". If you did, you'd see that both parties have or had consistently good representative. You party "fans" have run off the good ones in both parties by wanting them to support crazy/ unworkable policies. When those succeed, it's only the rich who can avoid the consequences.
I'm glad I'm rich enough to escape entirely or mitigate the damage produced by your blind loyalty. You could instead, take responsibility and clean up your party.
Not a single adult in the room at City Hall. A bunch of children all. That might be okay if they had a decent kindergarten teacher, which of course, they do not. The last one quit because the child in the mayor’s office lied repeatedly and refused to share his toys with others, the council children were slow learners who were unable to complete assignments, the classroom desks and supplies were repossessed by the desk & supply vendor for nonpayment of monthly charges, and her last four COJ paychecks were returned for insufficient funds.
Cameras installed in high crime areas will be shot down within two weeks-
People have made it clear they are tired of bickering at City Hall, so before I throw the city council under the bus and expose their stupidity, let me assure you that my administration is going to heroic lengths to play nice with council members.
So Antar.
Those cameras are real time. They have no capacity to record. Just as useless as Siemens' water meters. You'd have to have a team of people watching all the cameras all the time to get anything useful. No one ever brings this up. Unbelievable waste of money.
The reason crime is down is Jackson Ms is because the criminals are eliminating each other! Just a couple more years of record Homicides and the city will be safe again.
And y’all thought the Mayor didn’t know what he was doing!
