Yesterday’s ruling of the Mississippi Supreme Court is a win for Jackson. The CCID is an important part of any path forward for downtown Jackson. Some of the most successful cities in the country are collaborations between multiple municipalities, counties, regional, and state governments. It is time for Jackson and other regional and state partners to embrace a collaborative process that will ensure the success of both the suburbs and the downtown they support.
The creation of an inferior court that will help Jackson
administer justice is a major step in the right direction in terms of
coordinated policing. The expanded Capitol Police jurisdiction that so many of
us advocated has thankfully been protected by the state Supreme Court.
It is clear the Hinds County Circuit Court has an extreme backlog on cases. While the Court did not uphold the appointment of additional judges outlined in HB 1020, it recognized Jackson’s need for emergency judicial relief. I’m calling on Justice Randolph to make swift appointments under Section 9-1-105(2) to relieve the judicial backlog and help get Jackson courts flowing again.
While this may not be popular among the criminal defense
attorneys supporting my opponent, a reasonable bail and a speedy trial are keys
to ensuring once arrests are made, criminal are removed from our streets.
Dragging out cases for years helps criminals dodge accountability and just
makes the pain of victims last longer.
Liberals like to say “justice delayed is justice denied.” The victims of Jackson crime know the pain of justice delayed. My opponent’s liberal supporters have made a career out of delaying such justice. It is time to appoint emergency judges and end the delay.
Even though litigation continues in federal court, this week’s ruling is a welcome step in the fight against the crime that has plagued Jackson for too long.
