Feds: Jackson's sanctuary policy may be illegal

The Justice Department issued the following statement.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SENDS LETTERS TO 29 JURISDICTIONS
REGARDING THEIR COMPLIANCE WITH 8 U.S.C. 1373

WASHINGTON – The Department of Justice today sent the attached letters to 29 jurisdictions that may have laws, policies, or practices that violate 8 U.S.C. 1373, a federal statute that promotes information sharing related to immigration enforcement.

“Jurisdictions that adopt so-called ‘sanctuary policies’ also adopt the view that the protection of criminal aliens is more important than the protection of law-abiding citizens and of the rule of law,” said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “I urge all jurisdictions found to be potentially out of compliance in this preliminary review to reconsider their policies that undermine the safety of their residents. We urge jurisdictions to not only comply with Section 1373, but also to establish sensible and effective partnerships to properly process criminal aliens.”

The following jurisdictions have preliminarily been found to have laws, policies, or practices that may violate 8 U.S.C. 1373:

Albany, New York;
Berkeley, California;
Bernalillo County, New Mexico;
Burlington, Vermont;
Contra Costa County, California;
City and County of Denver, Colorado;
Fremont, California;
Jackson, Mississippi;
King County, Washington;
Lawrence, Massachusetts;
Los Angeles, California;
Louisville Metro, Kentucky;
Middlesex, New Jersey;
Monterey County, California;
Multnomah County, Oregon;
Newark, New Jersey;
Riverside County, California;
Sacramento County, California;
City and County of San Francisco, California;
Santa Ana, California;
Santa Clara County, California;
Seattle, Washington;
Sonoma County, California;
Washington, District of Columbia;
Watsonville, California;
West Palm Beach, Florida;
State of Illinois;
State of Oregon; and
State of Vermont.

The letters remind the recipient jurisdictions that, as a condition for receiving certain FY2016 funding from the Department of Justice, each of these jurisdictions agreed to comply with Section 1373.

The Department of Justice periodically reviews the laws, policies, or practices of jurisdictions that previously certified compliance with Section 1373 as a condition of their FY2016 Byrne JAG awards.

In addition to raising concerns about these jurisdictions’ Section 1373 compliance during FY2016, the Justice Department asked jurisdictions to determine that they will comply with Section 1373 should they receive an FY2017 Byrne JAG award.

Jurisdictions that were found to have possible violations of 8 U.S.C. 1373 will have until December 8, 2017 to demonstrate that the interpretation and application of their laws, policies, or practices comply with the statute.

Saw this earlier and must say I was a bit chagrinned. It wasn't too long ago that some readers of this very blog were calling Jackson a sactuary city, but in the context of criminals fleeing surrounding jurisdictions, and I admonished them for using the term out of context. Now it turns out that Jackson really is such by the DOJ definition. Shazam! Most of the other areas on the list are pretty darned progressive, so I still find this surprising. I'm assuming that since the DOJ didn't even know who the new mayor is, this goes back to before his time of making Jackson "radical".

You think they would have "googled" the name of the Mayor of Jackson

Since this was Senior's pet cause let's see if Mayor Sloganeer walks his talk and tells the Federales to keep their stinking money.

HOLY COW! Unbelievable (on two counts):

First, that the DOJ doesn't know who the mayor of Jackson is, and
Second, that we're in the same company with THAT list (which, certainly, must be the most liberal list of which anyone could be a part)

I wish the DOJ would do a little tip toeing around in Jack-town to see whazzzuppp. Might make it a little safe place.

Its interesting to find that a black led city would protect illegals largely of Hispanic heritage. In fact a majority of the Hispanic population considers themselves to be white. California has a very very small black population over all. But, Compton is now only 30% black as opposed to 77% earlier. The hispanics have voted blacks out of politics and have oppressed many in black community. This will be nationwide if allowed to continue. Hispanic poll done by USA today in 2011 showed less than 42% of hispanics cared to get along with black population. Look at Houston for example Latino gangs have wiped out large numbers of blacks.

Pretty sure the grant was submitted under Tony's name, therefore it was Jackson's responsibility to update the contact information, also a violation of the grant terms.

Trump's executive order regarding withholding federal funds to "sanctuary cities" has been blocked in every jurisdiction where it has been challenged on sound legal grounds. Regardless of its intent, the executive branch can't determine who gets what funds because Article I of the Constitution gives that power to Congress alone. Once again, like most of Trump's bullshit, this is a bunch of ill-spirited, vacuous hot air with no force of law. But it plays really well to the same people who are going to put Roy Moore into the US Senate in less than a month.

Note that both the C-L and JFP have begun a public asking for less pablum, more specifics and some action.

You know who posing this week as the "Editorial Board":

"... it's not immediately clear to us if this [Lumumba] administration is working expeditiously to rectify infrastructure so dilapidated that a dog fell into it and couldn't get out alone. What is the emergency plan?

~~ snip ~~

While that [more Lumumba gum flapping] sounds good, we're also eager to see real-time efforts beyond orange cones and yellow tape to keep children safe."

Then you have Jackson's new DPW Director promising to put his plan in motion to "replace 1 to 2 percent of the infrastructure system every year in order to achieve a brand-new system in the next 50 to 100 years".

Even Harvey wouldn't have been so stupid as to allow a member of his leadership team to make a nearsighted promise like that!

There is something fundamentally incongruous seeing the terms "City of Jackson" and "sanctuary" in the same sentence.

Anonymous said...

Jackson did this on their own.
The whole damn state disagrees with them but that is why they are so dead set on staying a sanctuary city.
Maybe being a sanctuary city is not such a bad idea. That would mean no more federal money. The city would have to come up with money on their own. Maybe then the citizens of such a city would elect honest knowledgeable leaders instead of crooked racist hacks.

Didn't the Feds just lose a case in Philadelphia trying to withhold grant money over them be a sanctuary city. You would think they would learn.

I fixed it for you, ""Most of the other areas on the list are in an alternate reality"

10:39, you're describing the REALITY of TODAY.

But around here, "The DREAM of the SIXTIES is alive in JACKSON" (a variant of Portlandia's 'The Dream of the Nineties is alive in Portland' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX8BsX3IIa4).

Jackson is where worn-out ideologies (and people who still embrace those ideologies) go to retire/rot/die. That's why Jackson is attracting maggots which previously feasted on the rotting corpses of Detroit and New Orleans.

The rules governing the Real World have NOTHING to do with Jacktown, as clearly demonstrated by Tony Yarber's recent homoerotic spanking video, featuring Yarber's fraternity paddle (and the shapely boohiney of a conveniently-cute car burglar).

So, "in the mind-SET of" Jacktown, Hispanics are still Marxist "brothers in the struggle against 'The Man'". Because it's still 1969, Joan Baez is still on the Pop Charts, and Dolemite movies are still playing in new-release theaters.

This idea of not following immigration laws is a good example of another Dimocratic policy for which the Republicans would be called all sorts of racists if they adopted this stance. Clearly, most illegals in this area are Hispanic and the jobs they take from US citizens are disproportionately taken from black folks. So if say Thad were to say we aren't going to enforce immigration laws, then someone like Bennie would be quick to say - He's just trying to take jobs from the poor ol hard working black man and give to these folks who break into our country illegally. But because the Dimocrats favor this idea, blacks say nothing. Hmmm

As opposed to those who favor Biden running for President or Franken retaining his seat? You really look foolish when you pick and choose among sexual deviants and pedophiles. Are you sure you want to take that position?

"You think they would have "googled" the name of the Mayor of Jackson"

Are you actually hollow-headed enough to think clerical employees at that level are going to use Google to verify a list that should have been updated by those positions on the list?

How did Austin Texas stay off the list?

It takes a village of idiots to want criminals to come to their city. Actually, these court decisions are made by far left ideological judges. The federal government withholds grant money all the time from local governments that do not comply with federal law. For example, a city must have certain affirmation action plans or lose grants. So it's legal.

Psst . . . the vast majority of the area’s Hispanic population is in Ridgeland.

If law enforcement really wanted to arrest the illegal population in the metro area simply drive by any soccer field on a Sunday and there they are.

Naturally. The work for 'these people' is north of County Line Road. Where do you expect them to live. There are NO apartment buildings in Madison and nine to a room have to live somewhere, I guess.

But, don't overlook 'Little Mexico' in Canton. Take a drive up to the City of Lights and follow an 'on foot Hispanic'. It's a damned third world country. Also don't overlook that this massive slum, although in the middle of Canton, is not part of the city, but is David Bishop's county district.

Sixteen months ago it was on his radar and he claimed he was going to bring it up to code (seventy five slum trailers). But he got distracted by cash transactions from developers.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
