The Madison County Tax Collector decided to shut it all down early on the day before Thanksgiving. Madison County residents who tried to pay their property taxes or renew their car tags were SOL if they went to the Tax Collector's office after 3:00 PM Wednesday. All they saw was this sign:
The taxpayers are already paying for Queen Kay and her employees to take off work on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. Kay Pace owes her employers an apology.

They can pay Monday....or online.
She had to rush home to SHUT the barn door!!
Pay by check. I used a DEBIT car for my car tag and was charged an additional $7.00.
@10:42
Thanks Kay. Now shut the barn door!
OMG. The HORROR. Tax Collector closes 2 hours early before the Thanksgiving break. What a bunch of of little girls, crying over this. Grow up. I'm sure these same people were bitching yesterday about something else in their pathetic lives. Doctor recommends, Take a midol for cramping and get a nap. LOL
Are you kidding me? This is a problem? I’m sure it was nice for those employees to get off a couple hours early. This is small-time whining.
@11:27
Ok, thanks Queen Kay. Now go feed the horses, and shut the barn door.
This is just sick and wrong here. It was her hired help, who didn't shut the door and a man died on scene there and 5 beautiful horses as well.
Morbid here is an understatement..
Geeez.
Canton mafia rides again...and they are all panthers.
@12:20 "hired help" bahahahahhahahahaha!!!!! Is that how she refers to that felon of hers?
First World Problem
Negligence: duty/breach/causation/damages.
Yep, all the elements are met for WD suit.
Criminal negligence?
Culpability for servants actions/inactions??
Sheila Jones was running her pie hole on line.
Hey Sheila....do us a favor and quit and move.
Pay online you old geezers.
Kay is never there. She quit a long time ago, but still draws a check. She doesn't go to the office any more. And the tax collector's office is the worst run county agency in Madison County. It is terrible.
Paying online for a fee is why @2:16 PM will never amass wealth.
Madison County tax collectors office is for me staffed and run by extremely competent and friendly folks. I don't know the Tax Collector. But
must assume that all of the staff reports to her.
4:32 must work there.
It is no secret that the Tax Collector's office in Madison County is full of incompetence. The Tax Assessor is good. I had a problem with the collector and went to the assessor's office. After a subtle "we know," they stepped up and advocated on my behalf to fix the problem, even though it was not their place to.
Kay Pace has closed the doors at 3 pm for several on Wednesday before the holidays off.
No one does anything about it.
If I take the time to drive to Canton to make payment it is reasonable to expect the office to be open until 5:00.
This is called the real world. If you get paid for working until 5:00, then work until 5:00.
Hey 1:29 Shelia Jones has gotten more done for Madison County than you ever have so shut your pie hole & move back to Nicknar!!!
Seriously? Go find a real crime
The Board of Supervisors is authorized to close offices. Miz Pace is not. All this yammer from you clowns telling people how to purchase on line or show up another day is silly. We pay these people to work certain hours and be open for business during published hours, not to knock off early and head to Wal-Mart.
And the note said they were closed down because some state agency had closed early. What a crock.
She's simply another arrogant, entitled, useless bureaucrat who has been in office way too long. She comes in three times a week for a couple of hours.
The pettiness of this is almost unbelievable to me who lives elsewhere in MS. So a person in an administrative position chooses to let her employees go home a few hours early on the day before Thanksgiving. What's the issue? I have during my working years had the administration as one of my responsibilities, had concern for the employees, and one way I showed it concretely was by sending them home early on days before Thanksgiving and Christmas. I expect that there were not a few bosses in the Hinds-Madison-Rankin county areas who let their employees off for part of Wednesday. Then, speaking as one who has always had a significant duties assigned to him for the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, I can tell you that having some time on Wednesday afternoon to do preparation for the meal. Unless there is something I do not know about the politics of this situation, my first response to the information about the the closing of the office a little early on Wednesday was positive and to commend the administrator for showing concern for her employees. This is not just a "no big deal" excusing, it is a "thanks for doing this for the employees.
I assure you I have more respect for Mrs. Pace for letting them off a little early than I would have if she didn't.
P>S> I think she does a pretty good job.
Kay Pace does a terrific job.
I’ve attended her tax sales which are run smoothly and efficiently.
She makes the county more money in those three days than you can easily count.
And it is like clock work.
Well done Kay Pace and every hard working person in that office.
I appreciate you and your hard work even if Sheila Jones doesn’t
K is the Thad of Madison County. Even her scandals are old and gray.
KF,
Not surprised, most county offices follow her lead. I bet JC closed early too.
What part of it do you people supporting Kay Pace decision NOT understand?
She did not have permission from the supervisors to close early on Wednesday.
She didn't ask, she never asked, she will probably do this again at Christmas.
She does not have permission to close to office early.
It would seem you folks consent to an elected official not to following the rules.
Explain please.
Can someone explain the barn door banter?
1:13 from the other posts it sounds like it includes the tragic deaths of several horses and maybe one person.
Kay doesn’t answer to the board of supervisors. That office, including everyone in it, works for her.
She doesn’t have to ask permission to close early. She’s elected.
She’s accountable to us, as taxpayers, not the board of supervisors.
It's true that she is not under the supervision of the Board. However, 3:52, you are wrong. County office closures and holidays are decided by the Board of Supervisors, are voted upon, spread across the minutes legally and announced and posted.
What's this nonsense about her letting these poor gals off to spend a little time in the kitchen at home? The closure note said the offices were shut down because the Department of Revenue shut down. She wanted it to appear that they might as well knock off and head to the house since on-line communication with that state department was not possible.
It's a crock. Pure and simple. She doesn't give a shit what the public thinks. She's not running again. She retired and still draws her pay. First she lets her boyfriend drive county vehicles, then she implements sexually discriminatory hiring practices, then she amasses a large fleet of black suvs to waste money (the county pays for those), next she decides to close down early several times a year (because she has no choice of course) and next there's the barn door thing. Her magic carpet ride has lasted twenty odd years.
The Pace is strong in Canton. Go panthers
You people making joke about the horses that got out by accident resulting in a human life being taken. I hope you reap what you sow. There is a special place in hell for people you making sick jokes. I'm sure Kay Pace feel bad about all of this.
Kay Pace cares about no one but Kay Pace. I have worked in a County position and have worked until 5:00 on many Christmas Eves. True there was a skeleton crew, but we were open. I am sure there are many people who worked until closing who had to prepare Thanksgiving dinner as well. It is true Kay is seldom if ever in her offices. Plus it was not the first time those horses were out.

Alpha Storm. Do you KNOW Kay Pace. How do you know what she feels.
Yes, I do know her.
For twenty years Pace has surrounded herself with a gaggle of groveling girls who pretend to adore her. The queen and her subjects, much like MHB. Throw the peons an occasional bone and they'll continue to grovel and make you look good.
On the other hand, I'm trying to remember the last time (or any time) I saw one of the counter-attendants crack a smile. In either office.
7:12 a.m. - Would you smile if you had come come work for that woman every day? They women should be happy as hell they have that job. Average pay for a counter person for the collector is 45-50K. Collector and Assessor employees get statutory raises every year that the rest of the county employees aren't entitled to.
This post and these comments leave me bewildered...
I have known Kay Pace my whole life. She is a good person and does a good job. These nasty, personal jabs are unforgivable, especially about the horrific accident. Shame!
1:21 - you obviously have never had to work around or with the collector. I dont see how the woman can do the job at all. She is never in the office. If it wasnt for Ms Myrtle the collectors office would come to a screeching halt.
I wouldn't have a problem with this except her employees were paid for a full 8 hours using my tax dollars!
3:04 - why don't you go grip at supervisors about justice court?? Those women there only work 4 days a week and get paid for a full 40 hour week and the supervisors and county administrator are good with it. They will tell you that they come in at 7 am and stay till 6pm. That's a big fat lie. All you have to do is ride by the JC building on hwy 51 at those times and you'll see.
The county administrator installed time clocks for all 'county' employees to hit. To use them you must use your county employee number and a finger print OR pin number. Those women down there clock one another in and out and the court clerk adjusts and verifies their time.
Madison County Justice Court is the only county office that does this. If Supervisor Jones wants to run he flag up about something she to certainly do something about that practice and the fact that the same office closes on flea market day when the flea market has zero affect on it.
The fleet of black cars belong to the Tax Assessor, not the Tax Collector.
"Collector and Assessor employees get statutory raises every year that the rest of the county employees aren't entitled to."
Back that up with a link! There is no statutory pay raise for hourly employees.
Justice Court also gives their employees day off with pay for their birthday! And I hear they get a shopping day for Christmas. With pay! Supervisor Jones definitely needs to look at this!
You know, after all that has been said in the comments section here, whether its right or wrong, nothing will be done about it. Kay will continue to do want Kay wants, the Assessor, Chancery Clerk, Circuit Clerk all will continue with what they do for their employees. Want to know why?? Because they are ELECTED officials and the BOS cant do a thing to stop it.
The county installed the time clocks in every office and forced employees that had been salaried for 20-30+ years to start punching a clock. None of the other departments, tax collector, tax assessor, chancery clerk, circuit clerk, DA use the clocks. All of their employees are still salaried. The BOS cannot make those employees use the time clocks because they dont work for the BOS. They work for the other ELECTED officials and the BOS cant force them to do squat.
Plus, you have a planning and zoning director that's been with the county maybe year that recently got a 10K raise and only works half days.....BOS can do something about that since he answers to them or the county admin.
@1:26
Duh?
BOS controls everyone’s budget, even elected officials. It’s called the power of the purse, and even the great and mighty Sheriff must worry and beg and POLITIC for more $$ for his department every year.
BOS also sets salaries for elected officials. For example, County Attorney makes $111,000, as set by the BOS, the controlling statute only sets a hi/lo range for the BOS to review.
So, yeah, the BOS is the sh*t, and it only takes 3 votes.
God bless
