It's been 21 years since a sniper went crazy at the Po Folks restaurant on Ellis Isle one Friday afternoon:

I was working for Jitney Jungle at the time this happened and we had some of our corporate offices in the Sack N Save that occupied most of Ellis Isle at the time. It was a surreal situation, especially to see that building burn.
For the record, the Po Folks restaurant had been closed for some time when this happened. It was an empty building, but still had the signage on the facade.
I wonder if Pamela Berry and Cheria McElroy are still in the Jackson area. It would be interesting to know how they fared and what their memories of that terrible day are.
Jimmie Gates is probably the only reporter left who was around for this attack. Everyone else is gone or at Mississippi Today.
Tragic in so many ways and very memorable for many reasons, not the least of which is that the shooter/sniper ended up being the brother of someone I worked with at the time!
Po Folks was a great place to pick up a bucket of chicken for a saturday tail gate.
And a few years later the KLLM truck driver shot up cars passing by on interstate 20 from his shithouse window at a seedy motel on 80. This area attracted quite a few idiots and psychopaths. Still does. Always did. Nothing changes. The bold new city.
