CL "retires" two photographers

The Clarion-Ledger announced the hiring of Sports and Digital editors. However, there was one little fact left out of this announcement:

The Clarion-Ledger has named new editors over digital operations and sports.

David Bean, who has served as sports editor since this spring, is taking over digital operations for ClarionLedger.com.

Hugh Kellenberger, who became a columnist after serving for three years as a sports beat writer at The Clarion-Ledger, is now the new sports editor.

"David and Hugh are talented member of our staff, and it thrills me to be able to make these big changes from within our staff," said Executive Editor Sam R. Hall.

Bean will oversee special digital projects, long-term planning, analytics and digital enterprise reporting.

"We have been a digital leader within Gannett for several years. We have several important projects coming up, and we need someone with David's experience, skills and ideas to take command of them," Hall said.

The digital position has been open since Hall vacated it to become executive editor. Bean was originally tapped to take it over, but he instead took the reigns of the sports department during a reorganization.....
Photographers Rick Guy and Greg Jensen retired Friday as well.  Big bad Gannett came in and did the early retirement hustle: take this package and go home or take your chances and wait for a possible layoff one day that will not be anywhere near as sweet as this deal.   Thus the state newspaper got rid of two of its three photographers in one week.  Joe Ellis is now the only photographer on-staff- unless one counts every infobabe and infodude on Congress Street as "content creators" who know how to take pictures with an iphone.

However, the Clarion-Ledger posted this "help wanted" notice on its website last week.

Now you know the REST of the story.

Joe Ellis does a good job. Hope they keep him.

Not a problem. Hints From Heloise and Dear Abby are still running. And, of course, editorials from newspapers far, far away. No local content, no crime news, but as it says on the newspaper's flag: "Mississippi's Information Source." Folks, it's over. Thank goodness for Kingfish and WLBT.

Sam Hall and Geoff Pender both came out against Initiative 42, while the CL editorial board endorsed it. My sense is that Sam and Geoff don't see much a future with Ganett and wrote to curry favor with the state leadership in the event they need to apply for a communications director position at one of the agencies or departments.

Who are the members of the C-L Editorial Board beside Hall and Pender? Anyone know?

Courtney Cronin should be asking some questions about the obvious glass ceiling over there.

Of all the sports beat writers over there, Kellenberger was by far the worst. Below average professionalism and creativity, and that's on scale of jr high graduate to message board poster.

Does the CL still have bloggers working for free? Might there be a pilot program for volunteer columnists?

I cannot argue with 2:33's assessment.

How bad have things gotten at the CL? So bad that they've hired on incompetent toss-offs of the Jackson Free Press. Sad.

Didn't even thank them for their service.

As for Courtney, you might be correct.

The Ledger has been a revolving door of young talent doing a few months to a half-year then moving on to bigger and better. Churn City. Hall promotes Kellenberger so that he can pay him more thinking that will stop him from leaving for greener pastures. He'll still be leaving. Just watch.

The thing that makes me want to end our subscription is the typical 4" - 5" of text on the front page. LOTS of USA Today style pictures and little to no type. Bush League at best.

Cronin is hot as hell.

Who the hell is Cronin? I know I know. She is featured in an interview about once a week on Head to Head radio. Otherwise.....Who the hell is Cronin?

1:37, hope you're right. Hall needs to go.

Compare the C-L to the Baton Rouge Advocate. Night and day.

The knuckleheaded author of the release could not even spell "reins" correctly.

They could save a ton of money dumping Ramsey and buying a cartoon each week. And do we really need cartoons in this day and age?

I don't get why people keep reading the Clarion Ledger if they think it is so bad. I haven't subscribed to it in several years. I did for many years though, but I haven't missed it at all. Lots of news online now better and free.

Monday's sports page cover photo's headline spoke of Drew BREEZE. It was a USA Today photo, but I'm guessing on the CL could add a goof like that-

5:24. Good Lord. It was a play on words. God the morons that comment on this Mickey Mouse blog!!!!

5:24, sorry (not sorry) for ruffling your feathers--you work there? I almost wish you were right, though, but this was no play on words. No quotations, no ironic verb use, nothing amusing. I even took it with me to a meeting to show others--no one I spoke with agreed with your stance. But, hey, maybe we were all just especially moronic yesterday. That's probably it...

Good Lord the imbecilic anonymous morons who keep complaining about this Mickey Mouse blog!!!!

To coin an old Chinese proverb; it ain't over till the fat lady sings and she is warming up on Congress Street. Since Gannett cut the newspaper div loose on it's on not much good has happened. Their new/old broadcast div is now the golden child.

They need to drop Bill Minor. He is nothing but an old hack for the Democratic Party. He is really pathetic. I enjoy reading columnists from both sides, left and right, but Minor is really really bad.

The Liar became irrelevant years ago, even pre-USA. Haven't taken it for years. Staff is minor league caliber now. Too bad, really. Kellenberger(sp?) is a joke. No objectivity whatsoever.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
