State Auditor Stacey Pickering issued the following press release:
Former MS Department of Health Employee Sentenced
Jackson,
Miss –Kenyatta Smith, former Health Information Clerk for the
Washington County Health Department, pled guilty to embezzlement and was
sentenced to three years of supervised probation and ordered to pay
restitution in the amount $653.25.
Smith entered a fictitious child into the WIC system and received food benefits over the course of two years.
“It’s
an unfortunate situation when a government employee is embezzling money
from a program that so many depend on,” said State Auditor Stacey
Pickering. “Thanks to the Mississippi Legislature, state employees who
are convicted felons can no longer work for the State of Mississippi, or
any other governmental entity in the state.”
Smith was an employee at the Washington County Health Department since May of 2010.

How about going after the stud of state street, MBMC CEO Chris Anderson for the $250,000,000 pilfering of Singing River Hospital?
There is no way to know or to verify how many WIC children are fictitious and how many are real. The only reason this woman was prosecuted is that she was a government employee. There is no process in place to audit or 'catch' fictitious WIC babies. But, every WIC office suspects there are many.
The reaction to this reality is the same as the city of Jackson's reaction to those who steal water from the city infrastructure. "Oh, but they're poor and surely they need it".
"There is no way to know or to verify how many WIC children are fictitious and how many are real."
BS. Millions of chirruns "disappeared" in the 1970s or 1980s the first year the IRS began demanding that their SS number be listed in order to claim them as a tax deduction. WIC could do the same thing.
So,,
if you get caught embezzling, the penalty is probation and repayment of funds. That ought to teach a lesson.
