Police euthanize five dogs in Gay Street attack

Correction: The story posted below has been corrected.  The original post stated the home and dog owner was Hubbard Saunders of Douglas Street.  The actual owner was Perry Richardson and the attack was on Gay Street.   Mr. Saunders' name was posted after talking to JPD.  However, JJ later learned the information was wrong. Mr. Saunders is not connected to this story at all.   JJ apologizes to Mr. Saunders.  Mistakes will be made but this website has no problem owning up to them. Comments with his name will be removed.

JPD euthanized five pit bulls and pit bull mixed-breed dogs after they attacked a homeowner and his friend late on October 1. JPD said the attack took place on Gay Street in Northeast Jackson.  The homeowner was Perry Richardson.  Police sources say the man was chewed up so badly that he resembled a homicide victim.  The dogs then turned on the owner when he tried to restrain them.  Police were called to the residence.  One police officer said the dogs "were killing machines. They were not dogs."   JPD seized the dogs and later put them down.  This was the second attack by the dogs in six months.  A neighbor stated in an email sent to JJ:

Last night around midnight, my boyfriend and I heard screams for help and went outside to find our neighbor being mauled by 5 dogs (pit bull mix breed). The news is reporting it was a "dog" attack, but actually it was FIVE dogs--which is 3 more than the city ordinance allows, but animal control told me over the phone today that "we dont really enforce that."   It was the owner's roomate being mauled. My boyfriend yelled trying to get the dogs to leave the man alone, but they were biting him/attacking him and would not stop. My boyfriend fired two shots into the ground to try to scare the dogs away--and then the owner finally came outside. The dogs then bit/attacked the owner. It was the owner's roomate that was lying on the ground being attacked. I called 911 three times trying to get help. Finally JPD officers arrived because someone called about the two shots fired.  Both men are in the hospital--I think the dog owner is in the process of being released, but the other guy was so badly hurt he could not stand and was unconscious by the time the officers finally arrived. ....
This past March, one of the dogs jumped the fence and came into my yard and attacked my dachshund--after that happened the owner assured us he would contain them. But, he has not. Also, one of the dogs bit a child (given it was just a nip and the kid was touching the fence) about a year ago--animal control was contacted then as well. When other people in our neighborhood contacted animal control, they said that the dogs hid under the house and they couldn't get to them.....

JJ was able to verify the facts presented in the email with JPD and spoke to the author on the phone.

Begin the it's not the breed it's the owner posts from deranged pit bull supporters.

Stipulated but clearly the issue with some dogs is indeed the owner(s). Jackson Animal Control is 100% useless.

Here is my issue with the whole "it's not the breed" argument. All dogs, no matter how loving, have the capacity for violence. The problem with Pits is the amount of damage that they can do when it happens.

I was born and raised in a family with indoor cocker spaniels. These were the most amazing and loving animals in the world. Long story short, my sister and I were rough-housing one day. While we were wrestling on the floor, one of our dogs got too close to the action so my sister reached out to push the dog back so as not to get hurt. For whatever reason, the dog snapped at her and clamped down on her hand. She was able to jerk her hand away and some Neosporin and a couple of band-aids later, she was just fine. The dog went immediately back into loving pet mode.

Replace my cocker spaniel with a pitbull in that scenario and tell me breed doesn't matter.

I highly recommend the standard poodle breed if anyone is looking for a larger dog

A pit bull is bred to fight. Man or beast, it does not matter. How they are raised or treated matters little. Just like a greyhound is bred to run, a beagle to hunt, and a blood hound to trail, the pit bull is bred to kill. Before the mid 1980's there wasn't any attacks by pit bulls. Then PETA needed money. Thanks to them some people believe they can replace hundreds of selected breeding for a trait just by the way they raise a single dog. They can't and we now see attacks on people by those ignorant owners.
It is the owners. It is the dogs. The dogs were selected for that one trait. Those owners are know by their one trait, stupidity. Put those two things together and we see the results on the news.

This was in Eastover, in case you guys were assuming some lower income area of Jackson...

I think a sorry lawyer and the sorry City of Jackson is about to get it's pants sued off.

Anonymous said...

That isn't Eastover. Good try though.

I know a guy that lives next to this pit bull owner. A lot of the neighbors had complained and even told him those dogs were going to kill someone one day. The owner was arrogant with his neighbors and refused to listen to them. He needs to be in jail

Anonymous said...

There is only reason the have these dogs and that is to hurt people. Put this lawyer is jail where he needs to be.

1:25, that area was called LEFTOVER, even back when we were starter-house-shopping in 1979. Some of the nicest people remaining in Jackson live there. It's a lovely area, with many lovely people. But it's NOT EASTOVER. On a map, North is generally up. Locate Ridgewood Road, and then locate Eastover. Leftover is across Ridgewood, to the LEFT of Eastover.

The boundaries of Leftover are Eastover Drive, Ridgewood Road, Meadowbrook Road, and Frontage Road.

You have the God given right to protect yourself. You have the Castle Law to protect yourself on your own property against a human being. I would think that would transfer to animals as well. Granted, 9 out of 10 times, you dont walk around armed on your own property. With that said.....

If a human being or animal attacks me on my own property ie: dog, cat, rabid squirrel or a flock of buzzards I have the right by law to protect myself by any and all means. If an animal viciously attacks me, my family or pets on my property there is no second chance, there is no calling the cops or animal control. If possible I will kill the animal before it leaves my property and fight the fallout later.

I live a street over on Highland Circle. I would've gladly served them 4 delicious ribeyes marinated for 24 hours in antifreeze had I know they were there.

Is it near the Eastover McDonald's and the new Eastover mall?

I think the roommate is going to be the new owner of this eastover home. Hope he recovers.

I had a Rottweiler mix (adopted from save this mutt post on this here site). Sweetest dog. However, I saw her flip switched 2x and it scared the shit out of me. Both times we were around other dogs. Had she been on the leash with a smaller person, it would have been a bloodbath. We addressed her issues, but always knew she could become trouble in the right circumstances.

You snobs are fighting over priority seating on the Titanic. Enjoy the ocean view, Eastover.

I got nipped by a pit mix on the lef ankle a couple of years back... It happened real fast and the dog ran off quickly; it didn't latch on or anything like that. Within 30 seconds my shoe was full of blood and ended up stitched up in the ER.. The bite force of these dogs is incredible

Now THAT makes a lot more sense. Richardson's deep into liberal ideology like anti-racism. So, you can see him, as a matter of principle, refusing to "label" a breed of dogs as "vicious". He used to lecture me on the glories of illegal immigrants, doing the work Americans are too lazy to do... and such-as. So I started ducking out of sight, when I'd see him headed my way.

How exactly does the JPD euthanize dogs?

Anonymous said...

Pit Bull dogs should not be allowed to live in the City. Remember, we lost a child a few years ago when one drug a child into his house and killed him. The list of bad incidents is long and the owners are usually afraid of something and hide behind the dogs. Or maybe they are hiding something hence the dogs. Whatever, this type of dog should not live in close proximity to people they do not know. In this case, the dogs knew the man. Hope he recovers.

If a pit bull comes close to my child or my dog, I will kill the pit bull and take issue with the owner at a later date. They were bred to fight and kill, and they do it well. I will not risk my family so that some idiot can allow a killer dog to roam free.

Could this be nature vs nurture?
Here's my experience with pit bulls. I grew up with 2 pit bulls as a child. One was a female and one was a male. They were strays who wandered onto our property by accident, after having run away from a home where they were mistreated. The dogs were extremely underweight from not having the proper nutrition. They wouldn't come to us at first and were very timid, but mom left food and water outside for them, anyway. They soon gained weight and warmed up to our family. We just accepted them as our pets and they began to sleep around the porch and soon stayed by the house regularly. I remember I was never afraid of them, in fact, I climbed on their backs and attempted to ride them like horses. I was small enough to not hurt the animals and they were smart enough to tolerate me in a gentle and loving way. Perhaps they realized on some level that I was just a child? They were the most loyal animals I ever had, actually. However, any stranger that pulled onto our property was promptly greeted with one dog on each side of the vehicle. They were essentially trapped inside the car with paws and teeth bared thru the glass until my father walked to the vehicle or called them off. Nobody was ever attacked, but people were gently warned, as the dogs made it very clear they knew who was or was not supposed to be around. You can't tell me that pits are "bred to fight". I believe, they are trained to fight. They learn to fight people when they are mistreated and turn on their owners when they are abused. If not, I'd probably not have survived childhood, especially, with my brave attempts to turn my pits into mules.

What made you think the two strays were pit bulls? Not one person in ten can tell a real pit bull from many other breeds. A true pit bull would have attacked some animal before they even got to your house. Sort of like a beagle will trail some animal if it gets loose. Sort of like a greyhound will run if it gets loose. You made the same mistake as many other people make. You thought those two strays were pit bulls and decided all real pit bulls act just like the strays acted. That is one reason we see so many attacks by pit bulls. People make the mistake of thinking they know a pit bull when they see one and don't know how to handle a real one if they ever see a real one.

9:45, what's insurance got to do with it? He can get an award (up to personal assets less homestead) from the owner to the extent of his damages. Insurance simply protects the homeowner's assets.

@1:27

Thank god a small child never wandered onto your property unaccompanied. It sounds like those vicious dogs would have killed it.

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 1:55, the only person that can't identify a pit is its owner after it bites someone.

Problem with collecting against this guy may well be that his land assets are in a trust. The type of trust will determine if a creditor can get to it. See parcels:

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
