Farewell to WJNT.

It was fun while it lasted.  The weekly Jackson Jambalaya Hour on WJNT is no more.  It was a fun run for three years.  I sadly received the call from the general manager a few weeks ago informing me of the decision.  He said the station would be selling the 8-9 block on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday to sponsors as it is earlier in the week.  It was a learning experience and anyone who thinks doing a radio show is easy hasn't tried putting one together.  I started with literally no training and no clue of how to do one.  Rush Limbaugh, I was not.  The hardest part for me was listening to tapes of my own shows.  It was probably six months before I could listen to one of my own tapes more than a few minutes.  I also had bad habits such as saying "ok" too much.  However, it is nice being able to sleep later on Wednesday mornings.  Thank you for the support and for those of you who want to comment and say the show sucked, you are probably right. I said it a few times myself.  Thanks for the calls and the support.

All I see are a bunch of excuses about why you got fired.

Fired? Did it for free.

Gold star for putting yourself out there. I wouldn't have done that with a gun to my head.

I enjoyed hearing the issues going in Jackson that the CL never covered or even asked about. While I never listened live, I was a regular down loader on the website. Sorry to see it go.

Wonder if Siemens pulled strings to get KF off the air (their office is right next to WJNT)? Bet they are happy.

Oh no I always listened to you and Kent and larry

The prep time for something like this has got to be all consuming just to be able be knowledgeable enough to answer calls, etc. Don't beat yourself up...a three year run is better than others could have done. The experience may lead to something else down the road.

Your show was pretty good. Remember that no one has high expectations for any show on that obscure, barely alive radio station.

I enjoyed your show and looked forward to Wednesday. Thank you!!

The shows the morning after elections were the most memorable. The one right after Greer and mcquirter won for Hinds county bos that opened with the hallelujah chorus I will never forget. The doom and gloom when Chokwe won and yarber was on. Little did he know a year later he would be on again having been elected the new mayor. I have missed the shows and hopefully they will be on again in the future.

You know I emailed you a couple of weeks ago when I noticed you were no longer on the air on Wed. mornings. I listened every Wed. Not to EVERY show, because there were some guests I just wasn't that interested in, but MOST of the time, I tuned in. Now, I don't listen on Mondays or Tuesdays. Occasionally I listen on Thurs. and Fri. to Kent and Larry, but usually for just a few minutes. I don't know why WJNT is shooting itself in the foot, because now I won't be listening in the mornings at all. Glad I can still find you online!!!!

You could always do your own podcast or even Youtube show.

Your hour Kingfish was the only WJNT programming I listened to on weekdays. But since the station sale some time back WJNT has made a number of stupid market decisions. A powerful AM radio station headed up by some very low powered decisionmakers.

At least we still have the Radio Strongman Kim Wade. WYAB 103.9 mon-fri 4p-6p.

As a regular JJ detractor and criticizer, I applaud you stepping up with this post. Not many of us could conduct a radio program. We'd be all wrapped around the axle in duh, and ah, and ok and well, and 'you know what I mean'. You will never have to worry, however about being at the bottom of the Metro-Area talk-show dungeon. Ben Allen will always, no matter what, occupy that spot.

Wait, Sid Salter will have that trophy for the next sixty years, Ben second from bottom and Kingfish a little further up toward the top or the local barrel. At least Kingfish didn't babble and stutter like what's his name on 93.7 who compensates for dead air with unbelievable bursts of vocal oddity. Ah..ba.ba.ba Dah Dah Dah.

And on a related note, Linda Allen now has a regular program that, thank God, gets that dumb shit JT off the air for a few hours most days.

As a regular JJ detractor and criticizer ...

So, why are you "a regular JJ detractor and criticizer"? Why does it bring your pleasure?

Anonymous said...

Never had the pleasure of listening to your show, but love your site At least we get to have Linda Allen on Supertalk from 9-10 T-F. Great to watch live too.

What's an AM Radio? They still have those things?

I enjoyed your shows that you uploaded to the site. It was very informative with mostly great guests. I never got the chance to listen to the live radio show nor did I think to even try to tune into 'WJNT'. You should definitely try to do a podcast or a YouTube show ( you DO have a camera now) if you're up to it. Just embed into the site and we can all watch/ listen.

We need someone to give us the scoop. You provide an invaluable content no matter the medium.

You did well, ...just fine. Sponsors W, Th & F ? Probably won't be listening.
Stopped listening, mostly, after Stan dumped Kim over the Great Real Estate Row.
You had an honest show, not like Larry on w/Ben & friggin Morgan & too much work
so that you look younger than your son Morgan's local shyster "never indicted"
former Sec Ag, but I digress...thanks for a good show. You will be missed.

"So, why are you "a regular JJ detractor and criticizer"? Why does it bring your pleasure?"

For the same reason you gained pleasure with your post, perhaps.

I do it to keep him on his toes. And so that he knows not everybody out here in 'reader-land' fawns in his presence. Constructive criticism, if you will. Every successful person deserves that kind of participation. Won't you join in?

11:27 - Since you brought my name up, I'll respond. Kim Wade's dismissal from WJNT was me following orders from my boss at the time. I just happened to be the operations manager at WJNT that caught all the fallout over it. That being said, Kim would probably be gone by now for the same "reason" KF no longer has a show. After nearly 20 years at WJNT, I moved on - wasn't worth the headaches and I'm really an engineer - not a management type. I inherited the job because no one else wanted it. I left nearly 2 years ago because I saw what was coming and had a job offer I couldn't turn down. I'm glad Kim landed at WYAB - probably the best thing that could have happened. At least they have folks there that are able to find sponsors for his show. If KF decides to delve into radio again, I'm sure that someone will give him the opportunity.

Your radio program had actual guests on any number of actual relevant topics. You let your guests go into depth versus forcing them into a 5-8 minute window. What a novel concept. The idiots @ WJNT should have put you on 5 days a week. You definitely would have taken market share in the metro from Paul Galtelli, er, Paul Gallo over at MSGOP radio and the incessant sports talking.

P.S. Your shutdown of David Lunatic Archie while subbing for Wade some weeks back while Archie was efforting to portray Phil Fisher as a racist was outstanding! Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Oh, now you are all about constructive criticism. LMAO Sure, whatever you say, though that doesn't come close to jiving with your self-definition as that of being a regular JJ detractor.

I enjoyed your Wednesday morning radio show. And I liked it because you offered a variety of guests and topics. I can't say the same for the Thursday and Friday hosts. They are two-trick ponies. Obama & Islam (or a combination of both). Their show gets one's day off to a poor start.

Please post here if you grab a mic again.

@10:10 AM always knew there had to be a reason why Kingfish is so successful with his ad business but never saw it quantified before. Thanks.

DonnerKay eats KF's dust. You blew it sweetheart.

"Your radio program had actual guests on any number of actual relevant topics."

Please list three actual guests and three relevant topics. Take your time.

Looks like JJ's regular detractor has gone back to work tearing down KF's efforts since they can't find anything redeeming about their own disgusting self.

Honest Assessment said...

Fallacy at 8:50. You cannot answer the question posed by Ben's Ghost so you attack the questioner with some silly, unrelated premise. Kingfish is the only person, coming to memory, who was more boring, and out of his element, than Sid Salter on radio.

Meanwhile: I suspect Linda Allen, if she wants the gig, is going to dethrone Gallo. She's a class act, easy to listen to, easy to look at and has relevant information with a fun presentation. Gallo bats zero in all of those four categories.

Lame response Mr. Regular Detractor.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
