State Auditor Stacey Pickering issued the following statement:
JACKSON- State Auditor Stacey Pickering’s office has issued a
demand in the amount of $5,967.42 to former Chief of Staff of the Department of
Public Safety (DPS), Gale Mills.
Evidence obtained by the State Auditor’s Office shows Mills
used her position to require benefits to be paid to her son, also a DPS
employee, that he was not entitled to receive.
“This situation is very unfortunate, but this office has and
will continue to hold those that misuse, misappropriate, or misdirect taxpayer
dollars, accountable for their actions,” State Auditor Stacey Pickering said.

There is so much more and again Stacy knows it and is not going after her!!
She is still driving her highway patrol car!! I saw her Monday!! Thanks Stacy and Commissioner Santa Cruz for letting this witch use our state tax dollars to ride around while she steals!!!
Her son is a lowly employee and drives a state vehicle!!!He knew what she was doing and he needs to be fired!! Why is he not fired?? This woman is sad example of how poorly Santa Cruz runs DPS. Santa Cruz had to sign off on all her requests!! He should be fired too!! Our tax dollars at work!
This is crazy. Our tax dollars at work! Is this the same Gale Mills that does polygraphs for court watch? That would explain the MHP car at their office all the time. Isn't that double dipping?
Next Pickering target: MDMH and Oxford House. Follow the money, connect the dots.
When is the real dirt on Pickering going hit the press??
Couldnt happen to a more deserving person but she will pay back the money and retire on her $ 70,000.00 a year retirement pay. Case closed, nothing to see here folks.
The information posted on this case is scant. Not enough on which to form an opinion. What position did/does the son hold? Does he supervise her or does she supervise him? Total lack of clarity in this mediocre coverage.
"Get your own blog" in 3...2...1...
I am just amazed it came out. Much of this stuff gets swept under the DPS carpet. and 3:33 nearly everyone at DPS has a vehicle. They are not just for troopers and they come with state gas cards too.
7:30 - it would be nice to know more, but I'd imagine that no one's providing much info right now outside the official statement. One price you pay for swift coverage is a lack of the detail that comes out later. #firstworldproblems
If Phip Bryant would do his job like he should, Albert Santa Cruz would have been gone a long time ago! However, that would be expecting too much from Bryant. Not sure why he is so protective of Santa Cruz; but it's obvious that he likes anything that has to do with law enforcement and driving a car with a siren. Maybe he should have stayed with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. The State of Mississippi would be better off if he had.
I guess this is another attempt for Mr. Pickering to claim he is doing his job. You can fool some of the people some of the time but Mr. Pickering you and the boys, cannot fool all of the people all of the time. The feds are running all over this state like cockroaches and right now they are loving the water.
Terrible when you live in a state that has 12 or so counties that most elected officials in residence are going to jail, along with quite a few state wide office holders!
Was she arrested on the job and handcuffed like Pickering had done to the Mayor of Terry. What he did to Nicholson was inexcusable to do to a professional man whose attorney had visited with him. The Mayor would have turned himself in. So, this woman, how was she arrested and where is her mug shot? Were the TV cameras there and rolling?
Yes because 5,000 here and there is so important when you have 10's of millions missing in places, that have begged for the auditor to do his job. Might as well have the mob auditing the books.
I thought Stacey Pickering was one of the good guys... What am I missing here?
The optics of this are not good.
>>I thought Stacey Pickering was one of the good guys.<<
More like one of the good old boys.
His speech at the Ocean Springs Rotary during the DMR fiasco reportedly included this:
“It has been very complex and very complicated and my only commentary on the DMR investigation is there are a lot of friends of yours and mine. Let’s be very clear. This is close to home for all of us.”The auditor said his take on the situation is the investigation will likely reveal a “culture of corruption.”
You are missing a great deal 9:33. Looked at what has been run through DMR since Katrina. Does anyone realize what someone in power can get away with if the auditor only does his job occasionally. I bet Stacey is doing his job as expected.
10:28 - yes Pickering stated that this (the DMR) stuff was tough because it was close to home. He acknowledged that there were friends of his and friends of many people in the Rotary Club he was speaking to. What makes the difference for a real public servant is when you continue to do your job and arrest/prosecute your 'friends'.
Pickering never said he wasn't going to do the job in front of him at DMR when he was speaking down there. He acknowledged what should have been the obvious.
Kinda like when our Attorney General acknowledged 'the obvious' when he said he couldn't prosecute any in the Scruggs fiasco because it would be 'like family'. And Hood didn't do anything - except, of course, continue to draw his pay as our Attorney General while Pickering, the FBI and the US Attorney did the work.
I would much rather have someone that recognizes the tough nature of the job when it affects people that you know but will still do the job. Realize that you don't like Pickering, so you won't accept this. Guess you are part of the Hood family circle.
Mills promoted her son, son-in law and his mom; gave them all state vehicles to drive and learned it all from Santa Cruz. Since he's been in power his son was promoted to Lt, his nephew was promoted to Lt and his best friends son was promoted to captain. To top it off they all live on the coast and drive to work in Jackson every day in a car provided by the taxpayers. No wonder he approved it all. The Highway Patrol is rooted in corruption. Come work there for one week and you can see for yourself. Not surprised by this story at all.
Mary Hawkins Butler would be a damn good start to putting this garbage to a stop. Pickering is up to his eyeballs in all of this and just may be the good old boys undoing.
Mary as state auditor is laughable.
6:19 The boys club hopes the voters think Mayor Mary is laughable. Word is all over the street Pickering is in a slew of trouble himself. The only thing laughable here is his audit record, since being in office.
Hawkins-Butler is laughable as Mayor and the though of her being elected State Auditor is hilarious!

I wish some of you gutless wonders who keep making such strong statements would actually post under your real name.
Why does it matter Rimes? How do we know that Jeff Rimes is your real name?
Hmmm
something like this
"When he signed the promissory notes, he did not read them... He tried to work out payment with Thomas McClinton. He has suffered great challenges with his business that has also been a factor."
It matters because we're talking about real people here who have families. If you want to make a statement attacking someone, the only way that statement is going to have any credibility is if you're willing to claim your statement.
...the only way that statement is going to have any credibility is if you're willing to claim your statement.
Then let's assume Jeff that any anonymous statements left here may lack credibility and it will remain incumbent upon the JJ reader -- just like it always has -- to determine based upon their personal interpretation of the word "attack" whether or not an "attack" has been made and whether or not the "attack" is credible.
Problem solved. Thanks for reading.
Rimes is the scold of JJ. He doesn't like the website, is critical of it, and is a regular visitor who looks for opportunities to take shots from a position high up on Mount Virtue.
Back to DPS. All the mechanics and radio installers drive state cars . The only brand new undercover car bought last year was given to a civilian instead of a Investigator . Many of the MBI vehicles have over 150,000 miles on them. Not only does that civilian drive a state car but his assistant does also.
Hey Stacy how come when I was assigned to work in Troop C I had to provide my own place to live. But certain people that work for the Highway Patrol are allowed to eat and live for free on the states dime at the Training Academy.
If there are DPS employees driving up to Jackson from the Coast, DAILY, then that's at least three hundred miles (and 150 DOLLARS), every workday. Too, they must be FLYING down the road, endangering the rest of us, burning excessive amounts of fuel, and prematurely aging their vehicles. None of that is acceptable: particularly the danger this poses to innocent people using the highways.
No, Kingfish, I don't always like what you do but I do like your website and both the variety and quickness of your reports. I just don't like people who gain courage from anonymity and make statements they would never make publicly.
*Scold* is a verb.
Merriam-Webster
scold
noun \ˈskōld\
: a person who often criticizes other people in an angry way : someone who scolds other people too often
Most if not all higher ups at DPS drive unmarked cars. Gayle got one of the Dodges because she looked cool. There are alot of trucks and SUV's so that they can be used at deer camp but by state law all state vehicles have to be marked unless approved by the Govenors office.
Who is Mary Hawkins?
