Rankin County Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest in Attempted Kidnapping/Robbery/Assault
The Rankin County Office arrested GARY RAYMOND MAPP aka "Beau" Mapp of 1035 Windrose Drive, Brandon, on Wednesday June 17thfor the charges of kidnapping, burglary/home invasion, strong armed robbery, aggravated assault with a weapon and impersonating a law enforcement officer. The charges stem from a 911 call received around 2:00 pm from a home owner that reported one of their neighbor's showed up at her residence bloody and handcuffed. Deputies on scene discovered the victim was contacted at his friends residence by MAPP who was wearing body armor with a law enforcement patch on it and a sidearm. MAPP ordered the victim outside of the residence and then placed handcuffs on him. MAPP then entered the residence looking for another individual related to the homeowner. MAPP eventually brought the victim inside and forced him into a bathtub. When the victim was presented with the right opportunity, he fled outside the residence only to be tackled by MAPP. MAPP was captured on security cameras physically assaulting the handcuffed victim. The victim was able to escape again, but not before MAPP places a plastic "zip tie" around the victim's neck.
With the assistance of the homeowner and family, investigators were able to develop MAPP as a prime suspect. Investigators obtained a search warrant for his Windrose residence. Investigators seized stolen electronics, illegal weapons, a motorcycle and a large amount of other items believed to be stolen. Deputies recovered several law enforcement badges and a police jacket. In addition to this items used to impersonate a law enforcement officer, deputies also recovered ball caps with FBI, sheriff and police written across the front. A blue light and burglary tools were also located and seized.
While deputies were still at MAPP's residence, additional Rankin and Hinds County deputies and investigators began to follow up on a tip that MAPP was at a hotel on I 55 north in Jackson. A search of his hotel room produced items that were stolen from the victim's residence. MAPP was located hiding in a utility room on the hotel grounds. MAPP cooperated with investigators and led them to the location where he disposed of other stolen items from this burglary.
The victim in this case is to be commended for his actions, he provided detailed information to the sheriff's office which a vital role in the quick apprehension of MAPP. I want to thank not only my dedicated deputies, but Sheriff Tyrone Lewis and his deputies along with members of the local FBI Safe Streets Task Force for their help in making a quick arrest and taking this dangerous person off the street.
MAPP will appear before Rankin County Court Judge Kent McDaniel for an Initial Appearance where we will ask for him to be held without bond. MAPP will then face Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest and our Circuit Judges. I'm sure we will be able to keep Rankin County and the Metro Area safe from Mr. Mapp for a long time.
