Sad that a guy who's nearly 70, has little hope of higher office, and has plenty of money still felt the need to weasel out of taking a position.
I'm so f@&$ing sick of Delbert trying to be an autism expert. Just because you have a grandchild with autism doesn't make you an expert on the issue. Get back to what the PEOPLE elected you to do-be the SOS, not some self-proclaimed expert. Besides, it's not an "epidemic." I'm so over him....
Sounds like he's at least open to changing it. Don't think the rednecks have any idea how much this hurts Mississippi's economy. Not only will business not locate here, but rumor is SEC passed up Pearl for hosting the baseball tourney because of the flag issue.
@2:33. Too bad Pearl lost the SEC baseball tourney due to the confederate battle flag. All the Mississippi State baseball fans really missed out on a great opportunity to see their team compete this year. DOH!!!
2:41 this is 2:33. Pearl's bid for the tournament wasn't this year, but a few years ago. I myself am a USM guy, so no dog in this fight. I just know that it'd be a big deal for the state.
How much will it cost to take down every Confederate statue, rename every county whose name is associated with the Confederacy, rename streets, airports, schools, public buildings and bridges? If the Jackson Wylie Medgar Evers International Airport and Exhibit is an example, tons of money. Should they all be named for African Americans or do we name a few for homosexuals and Latinos? What about women and the disabled? Do we take a poll in Fondren and Belhaven to make these decisions or do we turn it over to the Jackson City Council? And since the last referendum (vote) was held some years back, do we do it all over again and let the dead continue to vote? This is where Dogbart comes into play, if he can divest himself of his role as spokesperson for Autism.
You completely miss the point. The point is not to ban the Confederate battle flag or change street names. It's not to remove it from memorials. It's not to prevent any one from flying it on private property. It's to modify a state flag that flies on state property. That's it. This "end of times" prophecy is just hilarious. No, they aren't coming for your guns (or mine), they are not bulldozing the Confederate cemeteries, they are not telling you that you can't wear Confederate garb or have a Dixie flag or towel or, more likely, tattoo. And no they aren't changing the name of the team up at TSUN. BTW, the Rebels weren't named that until 1936. OMG, mah "heritage" is a bein' insulted. No, it's not, and my roots go deeper than yours, Hoss. Get a grip, Bubba. They aren't coming to tattoo a rainbox flag on your Grandma's behind. Geez.
3:29 is showing us a nice example of the "Err we gunna ban everthang thass offensive???" slippery slope fallacy. It's a really popular tactic among Confederates, trailing only the "Y'all dono the differnce betwixt the battle flag n' the third Confed'rate flag!!" strategem. You will see both at least twice in every online discussion of the topic.
Here's a thought: Why don't we just get rid of the image that (1) appears on the main symbol of our state; and (2) was adopted for the express purpose of supporting armed rebellion to preserve slavery? Then, we can debate things that have a more attenuated connection to slavery, like street names. Some might change; some might not. I for one would not object to paying an extra $0.0001 in taxes to change "Nathan Bedford Forrest Avenue" to "Maple Street."
"Don't think the rednecks have any idea how much this hurts Mississippi's economy. "
BS. High crime, laziness, crappy education, a terrible work ethic, widespread political corruption - they have a much bigger impact on the decisions made by the big money types looking for a place to expand than a stupid flag.
As is customary for Dilbert he stakes no position...his media weather vane has not accumulated enough data it seems. HE is a joke in real life, those commercials he runs while intended to be a parody are in fact reality.
Landrieu in New Orleans already talking about taking down the statue of Robert E. Lee and renaming Lee Circle. Get ready folks.
Good9:10. You KKK rednecks asked for it. Well you got it.
3:40
We miss the point. You say it's not to remove the flag from memorials that's where the flag is in S.C. It's at a confederate memorial.
S.C.removed it from the capital to a memorial on capital grounds. It was a compromise to placate the black caucus.
Their not going to change street names they have been trying to change the name of Forrest park in Memphis for years and now we hear about Lee circle in New Orleans. Now Alabama is removing the flag. He'll Stokes has been changing street names since the day he was elected to the city council !
They aren't comming for my guns! That statement is obsurd! Do you not watch the news.
As far as the name of the team up north, well we will see.
And all you sofisicated rednecks who make fun of us other rednecks remember redneck is relative.
Hilliary just called for the flag not to be flown anywhere!
As far as a rainbow flag on grandma's butt if the Supreme Court finds in favor of gay marriage every church and preacher will be sued and put in jail if they refuse to marry homosexuals. ( maybe a rainbow tatto on their forehead)
So maybe you should Get a grip on facts instead of opinion.
1:02, too bad KF doesn't have a "like" button, because you have posted the most accurate and truthful comment for JJ in the last several months!
Delbert (1) has to make a comment because he is who he is; no way he will allow himself to be quite when other "important elected officials" are talking - even when he makes his comment without taking a stand. Something he has perfected. (2) now his comments all have to incorporate autism, no matter the subject, since he has now added autism expert to his otherwise long (in his own mind) resume. (3) Wait til next week and he might say the exact opposite about the flag, just to make sure that he has all sides covered.
2:33, talk about the flag if you want. But that's not why the SEC passed up TM Park in Pearl. Stadium, as nice as it is, doesn't have direct access to dressing room for visiting team. The tight construction schedule made that design feature impossible. After they tried for months to work a deal with Jackson (thank you Harvey Johnson for keeping that terrible project out of our fine city) the owners cut a deal with Pearl but the money/time schedule got in the way.
SEC might not come here now because of the flag question but not until the stadium meets their requirements
