Trash Talk: Will MDEQ Fine Jackson?

MDEQ will hold a hearing to determine whether to fine the city of Jackson for its failure to collect residential garbage last April.

The MDEQ notice of hearing states state law requires Jackson to submit a solid waste management plan.  The plan states Jackson will hire a private waste management company to collect residential garbage.  The state approved the plan in 1997.  However, "On or about April 1, 2023, the city of Jackson ceased providing curbside garbage collection services.  Such services did not resume until on or about April 19, 2023."

The city provided so-called "temporary drop-off locations at the Metrocenter Mall and the city's landfill in Byram.  However, the Metrocenter location filled quickly and was only open from 8 AM - 2 PM Thursday and Friday and 8 AM - 3 PM Saturday.  MDEQ said the drop-off locations were inadequate.  The first violation occurred on April 6.  The agency also noted residents continued to place garbage curbside even there was no garbage collection service.

The notice states MDEQ will hold an evidentiary hearing and assess penalties at a hearing on January 25, 2024 at 9 AM.

Shockway will slide- just as he always does.

Fun fact: Councilman Vernon Hartley used to work for MDEQ.

Why didn't the EPA fine Jackson for dumping 50 million gallons of raw sewage into the Pearl River? Oh yeah, the Squad and Liz Warren wouldn't stand for such a fine.

So why doesn't MDEQ fine Jackson for the dumping of boo-boo?

Instead of fining an already overburdened city, I wish they could personally fine the politicians responsible for the gap in coverage.

MDEQ is the epitome of doing just enough not to get fired from state agency. They are worthless. I called them about a pretty serious issue with a developer and run off and they did nothing. MDEQ is soft.

Jackson doesn’t pay their other bills so why would they pay a fine from the Man?!?!?

And who do you think alerted the MDEQ after “warning” that they could fine if Richards didn’t get the contract.

It's a good thing the Mississippi Republican Party stands firmly on the side of effective enforcement of environmental protection laws!

I worked there for several decades. I found the opposite to be more likely the case. The agency was/is hogtied by the governor, et al. If the offending party had friends downtown, they got to slide. If DEQ pushed too hard to simply follow the law, heads rolled.

EPA should first , fine Lying Lamumba and his chief of staff and sista and then put them all in jail!

Republicans don't trust the EPA so much after all that Kemper Clean Coal fuss.

And just what exactly will happen if Jackson does not pay whatever fine is sentenced?
This is all just for show.

Nothing ever actually happens.

Fining Jackson is in reality fining the few taxpayers remaining.

Indeed 2:39 PM.

All State Agencies operate under the same conditions.
I know, as I retired from separate Mississippi State agency.

Well when your goveror runs to deform things, and that's what folks vote for, what should you expect?

"Well when your goveror runs to deform things..."

What the hell does that even mean?

I agree that nothing will come of it and Lumumba will “skate.” Lumumba is an any means to an end type of player; as such, another fine won’t faze him. He will continue to dismantle city services and hold the citizens hostage to achieve his end goal without blinking an eye. The special chancellor who presided over the “city vs itself” garbage dispute summed it up perfectly:
“The City of Jackson does not a democratic form of government. It has a DICTATORSHIP.”

That is a strong condemnation. Lumumba didn’t bat an eye. The press ignored it. I doubt it even registered with more than a few people. I don’t know if people are numb to Lumumba’s bullshit or if they just don’t care.

The penalties will be assessed by the Commission on Environmental Quality, not the Department of Environmental Quality. The Commission is made up of people appointed by the Governor. They did assess a big penalty recently, so maybe they will tag the City of Jackson, too.

This is just a continuation of stupid.
Deprived the city of the money it needs to function and then fine it for not functioning.

And, my all means, keep spending in Podunk MS, Jackson's sales tax money except for the pennies (literally) we get to keep.

Do look up where most of the sales tax money Mississippi generates originates. It ain't Podunk.

You might should take note that there a deep pocket Republicans living in Eastover and CCJ and POLICY should benefit ALL citizens of MS, not just the areas with the most party loyalists!

It's called fairness and aka good governance!

This "hate" crap is destructive and crazy!

Some of you believe in a Jewish and Muslim threats, threats from gays and sex trade, and the horror of late term abortions as if those are the major threats to society. Look up the math...you fear applies to a tiny percentage of the US that is scattered not concentrated. You believe we are being invaded but the party isn't writing much less passing laws improving immigration requirements or the agency that is a patchwork mess.

You talk the talk but don't want to lose the issues by fixing what is broken. The GOP wants you worried and sending money but to fix what is broken means those elected have to actually think and work instead of preen and fund raise.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
