Presley Surrenders

JJ is live-blogging election night.  Will the Tater walk back in or will a pair of blue suede shoes stroll down Capitol Street? Are there any surprises in Hinds County? Will the late votes count? What does all this have to do with the Two Lakes Plan?  Stay tuned.  Fire away in the comments.

11:05 PM: Brandon Presley concedes to Tate Reeves.

10:58 PM: Now the vote-counting slows to a crawl.  88% counted and the Governor leads the Commish 52.4% - 45.7%.  The margin is a grand total of 49,743.

10:50 PM: There is a pause in the Governor's race so we can get caught up on the local races.  For some reason, running out to get a bag of Krystals is rather tempting right now.

Wander Evers slaughtered political neophyte Allison Clower Lauderdale 78% - 22% in the Hinds County District 4 Supervisor race.  The district contains a fair amount of Republicans so Ms. Lauderdale should not have lost that badly unless she was that bad of a candidate, which she was.  Did she even hold a fund-raiser?

Bobcat and the District Attorney both won with more than three-quarters of the vote.

Anthony Smith whupped former Supervisor Darrel McQuirter in the District 2 race.   Just as in 2019, McQuirter didn't bother campaign until the last few weeks in the race and it showed in the results.  Smith beat McQuirter 78% - 22%.

10:38 PM: A curtain call might be due for Amile Wilson.  81% counted and Shanda leads Amile 60% - 40%.  The margin is 1,134.

10:35 PM: 86% in the books, Tate: 52.3% Brandon: 45.8%  Margin: 47,164 votes.  Time is starting to run out for the Democrat.

10:35 PM: 84% of the votes counted and Willie Simmons is getting a wee bit of breathing room, 52.8% - 47.2%.  The margin is 13,003 votes.  Still nothing new in HD #64.

10:31 PM: 84% tallied up.  Tate: 52.4% Brandon: 45.6%.  Margin: 48,264.  Brandon comes back.  16% to go and the race is tightening as expected.

10:30 PM: Wait a second!!! Is there an upset brewing in the Central District Transportation Commissioner's race? 77% of the votes are counted and incumbent William Simmons leads Ricky Pennington 50.9% to 49.1%.  The margin is only 3,992 votes.  Watch this race.

10:28 PM: 82% counted, Tate: 53% Brandon: 44.8%.  Margin: 58,666 votes.  Now it is Tate's turn to surge.

10:22 PM: Interesting  Gwendolyn Gray's has managed to increase her vote grab to 1.9%.

10:17 PM: The end is in sight.  81% of the vote is counted and the Governor leads the Commish 53% -45%.  The margin is 55,346 votes as the lead continues to grow.  If the Governor can hold this lead or close to it, doing so would send a huge message to his opponents as they outspent him, ran a likeable candidate, and practiced message discipline.

10:15 PM: Back to Northeast Jackson.  58% of the vote is counted and Yates leads Wilson 58% -42%.  The margin is 614 votes.

The butt-kicking in Rankin County continues as Celeste Hurst leads Ryshonda Beecham 72% - 28% with 85% of the vote counted.  Ouch.

10:13 PM: 78% counted as we come out of turn 3.  Tater: 52.7% Blue Suede Shoes: 45%  Margin: 54,214. Tate's lead is growing again.  Has Brandon's surge passed?

10:10 PM: 75% counted.  We are three-quarters of the way through this race.  Tate: 53% Brandon: 45%. Margin: 50,158.  Tate's lead continues to shrink as Hinds County returns come in for Brandon.  Will the surge be enough or is it too little too late for the man from North Mississippi?

10:00 PM: The PSC race is tightening up in the Central District.  61% of the votes are tallied up and Brent Bailey leads De'Keither Stamps 53% - 47% . The margin is 11,208 votes.

Amile Wilson ran over Shanda Yates in the HD #64 race out in Madison.  With all precincts counted in Madison County. Wilson beat Yates 62% - 38% by a margin of 276 votes.  However, the bulk of the votes are in Hinds County where both reside.  Make no mistake, Hinds County is coming through for the incumbent.  She leads the challenger 66% - 37%.  The margin is 990 votes but only 41% are counted.  We got a ways to go here, folks.

Make no mistake, Hinds County is coming through for the incumbent.  She leads the challenger 66% - 37%.  The margin is 990 votes but only 41% are counted.  We got a ways to go here, folks.

9:58 PM: 71% is counted as we close in on three-quarters of the vote.  Reeves leads Presley 53.6%-45%. The margin is 52,137 votes.  Is Hinds County finally coming in for the challenger?  Are we about to get a horse race?

Now that the rye is working, time to put in Within Temptation's new album.

9:52 PM: 68% counted, Tate: 55% Brandon: 43.5% The margin is 65,818 votes.  Tate's lead is growing again.  Figure 70% of the vote is counted.  If Presley is to win, he has to move and move soon.

9:48 PM: 40/43 precincts counted in Madison County.  The Governor is up 52.5% - 46.3%.  As stated earlier, Hood won the county four years ago so this is a nice reversal for the incumbent.  WE GOT US SOME VOTES COUNTED IN HD #64.  Amile is clobbering Shanda 62% - 38% in Madison County.  715-440 votes.  This race might get interesting as the bulk of the votes are in Hinds County.

9:45 PM: 66% counted.  Reeves: 55% Presley: 44%.  The lead narrows slightly as Brandon turns north but the margin is 63,990.  2/3 of the way home, Tate has a nice lead.  Can he hold it?

9:40 PM: Finally, votes are counted in HD #64.  Shanda Yates: 64% Amile Wilson: 38%  Margin: 148 votes.

Madison County: 30/43 precincts counted.  Tate leads 56%-43%.  Keep in mind Jim Hood won the county four years ago.  Huge reversal if it holds.

9:35 PM: 64% counted.  Almost two-thirds of the way home.  The lead slightly narrows.  Is Hurricane Brandon finally making his turn? Tate: 55% Brandon: 43%. Margin: 66,834 votes.  Gwendolyn Gray continues to pull 1.7% of the vote.

9:29 PM: Damn.  Are we going to get any damn votes in Hinds County.  I wrote the commissioners were dumb.  That was not a joke.  Just more proof.

9:27 PM: 62% in.  Champ: 56% Challenger: 42%  Margin: 73,980 votes.

9:23 PM: 60% tallied. Tate: 57% Brandon: 42%.  The margin is 74,275 votes.  Tate's largest  lead yet again.  If Brandon is to win, he's got to go now as Gordon's coming up on his back bumper.

9:20 PM: 57% is counted and Tate continues to lead 57%-41%.   The margin is 74,037.  Largest lead yet.

9:16 PM: 55% of the vote is tallied up.  Tate: 57% Brandon: 41%.  Margin: 72,228.  It is the Governor's largest lead of the night.  Still not votes counted in the Wilson-Yates race.

9:15 PM: Meanwhile over in Rankin County, Celeste Hurst is kicking former Pelahatchie Mayor Ryshonda Beecham's ass 75%-25% with 38% of the votes counted.  She is the wife of former U.S. Attorney Michael Hurst.

9:13 PM: The votes are coming in fast and furious now.  53% is counted and Tate leads Brandon 57%-41%.   The margin is 67,511 votes.  Oops, the lead increased again. Damn, I wish I'd made some jambalaya tonight but carbs, carbs, carbs.

9:10 PM: 50%!!!  We are halfway there.  The incumbent leads the challenger 57%-41%.  The margin is 67,187 as the lead shrinks by a few hundred votes.  It is the first time all night the margin has not widened.  Is this the expected narrowing?

9:05 PM: We are almost at the halfway mark at 49% and Mr. Personality leads Mr. Charisma 57%-41%.  The margin is  67,593.  There are still NO votes counted in the Yates-Wilson race.

9:00 PM: 42% is on the abacus and the Governor leads 57%-42%.  The margin grows to 53,549 votes.   21% of the vote is counted in the PSC Race and Commissioner Brent Bailey continues to lead De'Keither Stamps 64%-36%.  The margin is almost 16,000 votes.

8:55 PM: 38% of the vote is counted in the Governor's race.  Tater Tot leads the Shoes 56%-42%.  The margin is 48,459 votes.  Gwendolyn Gray is pulling in 1.7% of the vote.

8:50 PM: Oh yeah, we have a race for the Public Service Commission Central District. 15% of the votes are counted and incumbent Commissioner Brent Bailey leads State Representative De'Keither Stamps 60%-40%.  The margin is a little more than 8,000 votes.

8:48 PM: 33% of the vote is counted.  We are one-third of the way home and.... the Governor is holding on to his 57%-41% lead.   The margin grows to 46,233 votes.  The Republican candidates in the other statewide races are winning with most getting close to 2/3 of the vote.

Went with the Sazerac.  Nothing like a good rye.

8:40 PM: 28% counted.  Tate: 56%, Brandon: 42%.   The margin is 34,920 votes.

8:35 PM: 19% of the vote, nearly 1/5 is counted, and where are we? The Guvnah leads Presley 56% to 42%.  The margin is 25,615 votes.

8:30 PM: Special Circuit Judge Dickinson is on the case.  Don't you worry, don't you fear, Robin Hood.... yeah I know.  He worries me too.  He ordered Old Byram, Clinton 3, Raymond 1, Clinton 2 to remain open til 9 if people were in line at 7.

Still wondering what I should drink.  Sazerac Rye, Woodford, or Makers Special Whatever it is.  Tough choices.

8:20 PM: 10% of the vote is counted and the incumbent is ahead 56%-42% as the race narrows as expected.  53,075 - 39,603.

8:10 PM: 8% of the vote is in and Tater leads Blue Suede 58% - 40% (42,823 - 29,295).  Nice little lead for the Governor as it's always good to be ahead but we got us a loooooooong way to go.   No news on Hinds County court fight.

8:00: The Governor's lead holds.  Reeves: 22,602, Presley: 16,329  4% of vote tallied.

What the hell should I drink?

7:50: 3% of the votes are counted.  The Tater leads 57% - 41% with roughly a 4,400 vote margin.

I wish it were mandatory to publish all write in names. Those would be on fire this election cycle, especially the write ins below Rankin Sheriff.

I think Tate squeaks out a victory. Please, GOP, wake up and give Mississippi a better candidate in 4 years and don’t anoint another candidate like Tate.

I vote Woodford. I may have a taste of something myself.

It looks like Presley is going to make a race of it. Hosemann outperforming Reeves by about 7-8% and Presley is ahead in Jackson and Harrison counties that went heavily for Reeves last cycle. Hood lost by 5% of the vote. Might get the Tater out after all….

He won’t, but any little tyrant who voted to have employees fired if they refused the Covid vaccine like she did should never be allowed to run for public office again.

But, the High-Sherf came out supporting Shanda.

I’ve not considered Delbert would run for governor. If he does, he would make good governor. If he doesn’t run, I don’t have a suggestion. I like Shad White but he needs to age some more to be viable. I don’t see any others as strong leaders though simply putting an R beside the name makes a strong candidate. See Tate, for example.
As to who would be a good candidate, perhaps the GOP should step outside the current elected officials and find a business man (or woman). That may seem too risky but I think not.
I said when Bryant appointed Cindy HS, I could have gone down the halls of Butler Snow, Watkins Eager, Brunini or other firms and found a handful of stronger leaders and candidates in minutes. But alas, Cindy was college friends with the First Lady.

Democrats received 55,403 votes for governor in 2019 in Hinds county.
Republicans received 15,447 votes for governor in 2019 in Hinds county.
Call it plus 40,000 votes for the Democrats.

Tate is 64,000 votes ahead right now.
Once Hinds county votes, he will be just 24,000 votes ahead.

In a close race, Tate won by 47,700 votes in 2019.
It looks to be another close race in 2023.

Atlanta last to report in Georgia, which goes D after a big R lead statewide.

Philadelphia last to report in Pennsylvania, which goes D after a big R lead statewide.

Milwaukee last to report in Wisconsin, which goes D after a big R lead statewide.

A pattern is here.

Now Jackson will be the last to report in Mississippi after a big R lead. Did Zuckerman give enough cash for Jackson to pull off the win?

Looking at WAPT, it shows that in the Insurance Commissioner’s race, a statewide elected position, 95% have reported, but only 86% reported in the Governor’s race. How can there be two different counts for two statewide positions? Shouldn’t the precincts reporting be the same?

How much stuff got broken at Mississippi Today’s election HQ tonight?

Anonymous said...

How depressing. All of that out of state money didn’t help Presley, lol.
I saw the scared look on Maggie and Howard’s faces and The somber mood at the Presley camp very early in the night. I knew this state wouldn’t flip blue tonight, not after 3 years of Biden’s disastrous Presidency.
The polls, WLBT and the Clarion Ledger were all wrong. They didn’t get the outcome they hoped for. The local media wanted to influence the election by reporting that Presley and Reeves were neck and neck and Presley could pull a win off. Then they tried to tie Reeves to the welfare scandal all to discourage white conservatives from turning out today. But it was the blacks who stayed at home. Democrats will do whatever it takes to win. The polls are wrong, no surprise here. We already know whose corner the local media are in but they kept wishing and hoping for the numbers to turn around.

My memory isn't what it once was, but there was a poster a few months back, anonymous, of course, that called the governor's race 53 to 47 for Reeves. No, it wasn't I.

That poster had responded to a daydreaming liberal that anticipated a democrat victory. The response was something like "your team goes down 53 to 47". I remember the quoted part very well. It may have been one of Nostradamus' relatives.

Ben Allen threw his support to an anti-business, pro-abortion candidate who favors firing employees who have ethical concerns over untested COVID jabs. That's nothing. I could have gone down the halls of any Jr. High School in MS, even JPS, and found more than a handful of stronger leaders, with more smarts, than CHS.

Mississippi will remain what it is - last(ish) in good things, first(ish) in bad things - until both the MSGOP _AND_ Dems put forth better candidates _AND_ the voters elect them. Can anyone put forth a reasonable and objective argument in support of a single state-wide elected official, or US congressperson, as having made Mississippi a truly better state for all or at least most of its citizens? I cannot, as much as I'd like to be able to do so, yet reasonable and objective arguments against all of them can be made without much research or deep thinking. Yes, a reasonable and objective argument could be made for a handful of state legislators or other localized officials, but that small number is not nearly enough to turn Mississippi's myriad problems around.

To add to the problem, most of the future would-be effective leaders and informed voters leave the state barely out of their teens, with no intention or desire to ever return to live, work, govern, or participate. IOW, those who would lead Mississippi to a better future and those who would elect them are leading and voting in other states, so Mississippi gets the Taters and the Bennies, yet even buffoons like Tommy Tubesteak can't completely fuck up Alabama/Birmingham/Huntsville(region). Think about that: Ala-damned-bama manages to make Mississippi look like a bunch of racist (both ways), uneducated hicks too incompetent to even operate its capital city, much effectively take of its elderly and truly needy, properly fund its state pension, educate its kids, easily/consistently attract national business interests, etc., etc., etc.

To be fair when is the Mississippi economy ever on fire? That's just how it's been in my 36 years of life. That's not changing regardless of a Democrat in the Governors mansion.

I won't pretend to know why more business doesn't set up shop here. It's not like we don't produce advanced degree holders. They just get sucked up to the surrounding states. Hell I was going to be one of them jumping ship if I hadn't met my wife here.

If you don't think Chockstick and crew are "hicks" we have totally different definitions of "hick." Mine would be generally, "unintelligent," "unsophisticated," "narrow-minded," with "racist" in there somewhere in certain circumstances and when the other traits are included. It would not include personal characteristics like race, skin color, etc. or reasonable personal choice things like religion or political party.

On Shanda:

November 7, 2023 at 8:26 PM "she is more of a problem than a problem solver."

Ummm, nope. She has been a very effective legislator. Her being moderate and now officially Independent, she can truly represent her constituents and work with both sides of the aisle for effective government, something sorely lacking locally and especially nationally! Delbert is also a true leader. He is conservative, in spite of what you people claim, and is the most important elected official in this state. Love it that he garnered more votes than any other office including the guv.

November 8, 2023 at 7:03 AM She has support all around. I thought Ben's endorsement was nice but not effective as he has been out of office for so long. Supervisor Graham and Sheriff Tyree Jones also endorsed her. That's what you earn when you're a good public servant of all the people.

Amile is a nice enough fella but no experience and perhaps a little narrow.

Anonymous said...

@1:57 CFA/CPA, all depends on which way you want to go in your career. One isn't necessarily better than the other.

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure that a CFA is basically only an insurance sales person that took an industry exam. Not licensed by the state or feds. It is simply a designation for a sales person.

Um, no.
A chartered financial analyst (CFA) is a globally-recognized professional designation given by the CFA Institute that measures and certifies the competence and integrity of financial analysts. Candidates are required to pass three levels of exams covering areas, such as accounting, economics, ethics, money management, and security analysis.

CFA is one of the most respected designations in finance and is widely considered to be the gold standard in the field of investment analysis.

Um, no.
While becoming a CFA charterholder is an accomplishment of no small amount, it is none of the above-quoted highly subjective sales hype (but the objective exam info is largely accurate even if a bit overstated). If nothing else, no test can "certify" competence or integrity, much less both. The gutters are littered with all sorts of certificates which once belonged to those who thought for a variety of reasons including hubris that they were real high-steppers in the field of "investment analysis." Most of those who are truly successful at "investment analysis" both well-known and largely unknown to most are not CFA charterholders. Yes, there are many successful charterholders, too. The bottom line is that the "gold standard" for "investment analysis" is "how much actual profit do you make for yourself and if applicable, those you advise." But no, holding $X amount of ACME stock is not profit no matter what you paid vs whatever trading price might be today. See, e.g. WeWork vs Buffett/Munger/BRK, or, Elon Musk vs Elon Musk.

None of the above is intended to suggest that Tater is a dummy - he isn't. But being a CFA doesn't really come into play insofar as his being Governor of Mississippi. I know a few CFA charterholders (and ex-holders) that aren't competent to shovel shit out of a stable. And Tater is not among those, either.

Here's as good a place as any: Tate would have made a decent-ish Senator in place of CHS but as Governor of a state with the particular issues facing Mississippi, not so much. Now, however, his less-than-stellar turn as Guv will probably end his political future. He may not give a damn - just take his campaign piggy bank and other funds, ride off into the sunset, and analyze his investments from a beach house somewhere on the Redneck Riviera down 30A way.

There are 11 boxes in Shanda's "Republican" District 64. She carried every one of them. She won the Country Club box at 82% and Eastover improved from 29% 4 years ago to 58% yesterday. Fondren was ridiculous. She whipped the entire Republican machine, from Jim Herring and Andy Gibson to Mary Hawkins and Haley Barbour, if one is to believe Wilson's claims of endorsements. People that are educated want representatives that are thoughtful. Wow. what a win for reasonable, balanced people. This win is actually cleansing.

So tired of Mississippi GOP’s call to “Keep Ms Red!”
How about a candidate with a platform and some ideas instead of “not a democrat.”
But in the current political climate, what intelligent person would want to go through with the garbage involved in running for state office??? The two party system is slowly killing itself….

We get it, 6:52 pm, you're not a fan.

I see many members of Congress on TV, introducing legislation and influencing national issues. But seldom are they Roger Wicker or Cindy Hyde-Smith. They're strictly back benchers.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
