The Lord of the Flies Redux

What happens when a school decides to have no rules? MSN reported:

Charlottesville High School was forced to cancel school last Friday after teachers refused to show up for work because of too much fighting between students.

The situation is so bad that school has been canceled for Monday and Tuesday, and administrators have until after Thanksgiving break to try and restore a semblance of order.

“On the very first day of school, kids were told, ‘Off and away,’” one anonymous staffer told the Daily Progress. “The phones did not go off and away. The next thing you know, we have a revolution on our hands because they realized that there’s no enforcement of that rule. And then they discover there’s no enforcement of the rule of having to go to class. And if you mess with the principal, there’s no punishment.”

Not that Charlottesville High School even has a principal to mess with. Principal Rashaad Pitt announced his resignation earlier this month.

It was school policy not to punish students for breaking the rules, according to some CHS staffers. CHS counselor David Wilkerson wrote on Facebook, “The [Virginia Department of Education] would prefer that the data shows that no kids are being punished due to the correlation between punishing kids and a poor graduation rate. Administrators keep asking kids to do things that they do not wish to do and in the absence of consequences, the kids expand their misbehavior.”

“When kids are using profanity to explain to the teacher why they’re not going to go to class, they often include verbal threats,” another anonymous staffer told the Daily Progress. “There are just so many kids that are willing to be physical very quickly. I’m sure there are some teachers that fear they can be the next target.” Rest of article.

So much for Rousseau, Emile, and his noble savage theory.

"the correlation between punishing kids and a poor graduation rate"

Once again, bad policy resulting from the failure to understand the difference between correlation and causation.

We really do need to stop putting dumbasses in policy-making positions.

When I was in school we started the day with a prayer and the pledge and we said yes ma'am and yes sir. If you got in trouble at school you were also in trouble when you got home. I don't remember any fights and as far as I know none of my classmates ended up in prison.

I am curious to know which MS high schools, if any, prohibit cell phones.

I went to Catholic schools. One on one fist fighting, Queensbury Rules, was recreation and a mark of male pride in Oklahoma and Colorado.

There are schools that have a zero phone policy. The difference is that the teachers enforce it, the administration backs up the teachers, the parents know the rule and back the administration, and the kids learn to either live with it or live with the consequences.

We all know the quality of these schools.

Equity. Equal benefits regardless of input, effort, or merit. No rules but for the taxpayers and middle class.

Coach Wade, his paddle, and his pack of Kools stuck off in his gym sock could handle those turds.

Correlation and causation, my ass. Both are woke concepts. The penalty for rule violation should be expulsion. Let mom worry about it and have dad pick up the little brats and drop them at the house. And if parents complain about those consequences and administrators and school boards go along with that uproar, teachers should resign. Period.

When zero consequences follow rule violations, you've encouraged more of the same. How simple is that?

The parents of these delinquents are...wait for it...MILLENNIALS.

What happened to adults? Seriously. It's like adults have silently, but completely and immediately, left society! Are people of sufficient age (f/k/a "adults") now afraid of children or have they all succumbed to the social contagion of "equity?" It's like certain segments of society have become completely unruly and unhinged, yet no one "in charge" knows what to do (or WHY they should do it!)

Seriously, folks, this has reached epidemic proportions! We've got to get control of a quickly devolving society or we're simply going to be (or may be already) living in an unlivable situation. Too many people are apathetic or, even worse, supportive of how things are now being "run," but the current state of things is unsustainable.

We can't take the worst of society and expect everyone to come down to their level! In the past, we've strongly exhorted people to do what they can to lift up others along with themselves; however, in the past decade or so, that encouragement has been inverted. We're now expecting everyone to give into, and go along with, the most base among us. How is that good for ANYONE? People with even pretty good sense should realize we can't keep going this way, at least, not if we want to survive as a society and nation.

Maybe we've gotten to the point that we don't.......

That community gets what they deserve. They wanted that. Well embrace it!

3 or 4 of the last comments are thumbs up. Sadly however, feels like we're preaching to the choir here.

Don, you usually seem like a pretty reasonable guy, so I'm going to assume you've just had a rough day.

Correlation is a statistical concept; causation is a logical concept. Neither are "woke." Here's a primer on correlation and causation:

https://web.cn.edu/kwheeler/logic_causation.html

For example, "the correlation between punishing kids and a poor graduation rate" does not mean that more punishment causes reduced rates of graduation. In fact, both higher rates of punishment and lower rates of graduation could be caused by behavior problems, in which case removing punishment will not raise graduation.

Parents today want to blame the teacher, the bus driver, the coach, and the principal. Yet the Parents of these little fuck ups don't want to take charge of their devil spawns.

hard to believe that a city that has been controlled by democrats since 1978 would behave this way.

These Zionism pep rallies appear to have devolved into schizo boomers talking to themselves. How pathetic. KF could have something interesting if he wasn’t such a limp circumcised shabbos goy.

@2:16pm

"We really do need to stop putting dumbasses in policy-making positions."

Excellent - and to the very point. What drove putting those dumbasses into higher level positions started about 35 year ago with, yes - the media. The media (and too many parents who wanted to be popular rather than be actual parents) drove this theme about "punishment" resulting in poor life outcomes.

The media capitalized on the idiot and narcissistic Boomer generation who WERE punished severely and harshly by older parents (think WWII Greatest Gen...) who didn't give a rat's ass about your whining and crying - and how the Boomers didn't want THEIR children to feel as bad as they did when experiencing needed discipline. So now we have a nation on the verge of anarchy due to several generations of parents that think discipline isn't needed to succeed, and a media that loves to fan those flames perpetuating that everyone's oppressed now.

The American Boomer Generation may just go down in history as the biggest failure of mankind because of an overcompensation for their tough upbringing from an emotionally unavailable generation that survived the Great Depression and numerous wars. The Boomers really used their children to overcome their own demons of sadness related to the often strict, cold parenting they experienced.

In the AA community - a similar phenomenon continues. Too many fatherless homes have single mothers who overcompensate for the absence of that father, by NOT disciplining their children properly.

Finally, when parents (about 35 years ago, and part of this equation) started being "friends" to their children - children do NOT recognize any authority up and including law enforcement - along with teachers.

Fascinating read. The article you quote, though, KF, you need to have an ellipsis to show you skipped over the sixth paragraph. That paragraph is key to understanding what happened in Charlottesville.

To this commenter it appears as though there has been a Unite The Left rally among Charlottesville’s pedagogical community, the results of which have been a smashing success.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
