Better not get around other people unless you absolutely have too.

27% hospitalizations is concerning, at this rate it won't take long to overwhelm MS hospitals. I wish they gave more information on whether those hospitalizations are ICU or basic supportive care.

This is a good thing. As the numbers go up the death rate goes down. Things will start to get to normal after next week.

How is tater expecting to fix the shortage of fiddles? He and his gubmint bros have been plumb wearing them out!

Rap this crap up.

Anonymous said...

This is going to be biblical!

Anonymous said...

I can't help but wonder what percentage, if any, of hospitalizations are people who treat the ER as their primary care doctor.

Anonymous said...

The factor which most people aren't aware of that will greatly impact the coming toll: the density of the population.

Anonymous said...

The death toll is going to lag the onset of symptoms by about two weeks. Through March 10 there were a total of 50 cases that had symptoms before then. There is no way to come up with a mortality rate until the patient is either cured or dead, and that number is very small at this point.

Stop trying to use totally incomparable numbers to justify your desire to turn the pandemic loose. We know you would love nothing more than to see half the retired people kick the bucket.

For those of you who can comprehend scientific journal articles (no disrespect, they're difficult to read unless you have a background in this stuff) here is an article from a respected publication.

The reason there are not a lot of deaths yet is because this virus takes time to run its course. Just look at the figure on page 7 of the article.

Actually a gathering of TWO people is too many... if one of them is already infected.

This just in:

"SEOUL, March 24 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump asked South Korea to send medical equipment to the United States to fight the coronavirus, promising to help Korean companies gain U.S. government approval, South Korea’s presidential office said.

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in offered to send the equipment if his country has any spare, his Blue House office said in a statement late on Tuesday, after the 23 minute phone call, which it said was arranged at Trump’s urgent request.

The request for help highlights the diverging paths the two countries took since both discovered their first coronavirus cases on the same day.

South Korea rolled out widespread testing within days, swiftly launching an aggressive programme to isolate confirmed cases and trace their contacts.

...

Moon told Trump that South Korea “will provide as much support as possible, if there is spare medical equipment in Korea”."

Where the hell was there still a restaurant remaining open for dine-in service?

That's damn un-American to take advantage of all the other joints closing their dining areas. Call them out!

At least a few of the commenters here are apparently trying to make up for missing their chance to punch their ticket to the next plane with the Reverend Jim's Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ.

One significant difference is that the People's Temple wasn't purposely intending to infect the non-believers in the service of Wall Street.

I wish they gave more information on whether those hospitalizations are ICU or basic supportive care.

Why? To do what? Spread more FUD?

MS per capita infection rate is disturbing. At 30% daily growth, the total numbers will be high.

So does the ban on gatherings mean that offices have to shut down or have a max of 10 people at a time or does this not affect businesses?

It's long past time for Tater Tot to turn the hounds loose.

For people like me that have had the virus and are now over it, should I not be allowed to go back to work and provide for my family? If not now, then when? And who/how is that decision made? Basic questions to which no one with the ability to act has the answers. Am I wrong?

Don’t you think it is common sense that heavily populated areas like NYC, Chicago, LA, will have more infections because of the population density, large numbers of homeless and use of mass transportation? My only exposure is the one time a week I go to the grocer. That may do it but I try to practice distance and check myself out. I’m equally concerned about my mental health after being exposed to the talking head experts on TV.

Anonymous said...

@1:26 When did you get it? How many people did you infect?

Anonymous said...

Once there is a large population of recovered individuals then they should be able to return to work. The problem now is you can pretty much count on one hand those that have recovered in Mississippi. Unless you are a one-man-band the concern is not about you in particular, it is about the other workers who may get infected or spread it to other people. It is also about the congregation of customers if you are in the service industry. Your hopeful inability to be reinfected does nothing to protect the rest of the population at this time.

Anonymous said...

@ silent night: A test which identifies which people have acquired an immunity to the currently circulating form of the virus, coupled with testing to be sure those with immunity are no longer shedding (spreading) the virus would identify those suitable for relaxing social distancing precautions. You may think you know your status but please report which if any tests have been performed upon you.

This test should have been one of this nation's highest pandemic preparedness priorities. We should and could have spent the past few months developing and producing such a test asap.

At the same time we as a nation should and could have also ensured we had an adequate supply (in the millions) of appropriate diagnostic test(s) that worked to identify those who have the virus and are actively shedding the virus and thus are capable of spreading the virus to others who do not have immunity. Actions should and could have been taken to ensure the test could actually be utilized with appropriate supplies and processing capability on hand when needed.

We as a nation apparently did neither.

As a direct result of doing neither of these things many people are dying now, and it will get worse.

Please listen to the medical experts. Trying to force it to go away in 3 weeks isn't going to work . Thinking everything can be back to normal by Easter is INSANE.

So let's see how my numbers from a few days ago are looking.

It's exponential growth, which very few people understand and can comprehend. Easiest analogy would be compound interest.

To be honest, I think my son of 5 gave it to me. His symptoms were so short we (the parents) didn't think anything if it. We went to the doc twice with two neg. tests for the flu and strep. On and off fever and a cough. Doc thought it was just the common cold. Sounded like it at the time. Besides this was around March 5 or so. No testing for Covid19. After about 3 or 4 days he was fine. I would say I thought I had the same. I didn't get any symptoms until about 4 or 5 days after my kid was over his cold. At this point it could or could not have been him, who knows. I went to the doc thinking it could be one of two things: sinuses or the cold. The doc was in total agreement. I never ran a fever and I was coughing up mucus. Classic signs of the two. After about two days (not hanging around anyone but family) I went back with that annoying cough to see if I could get a zpak thinking allergies. Also took a swab up the nose......and the rest is history. The cough currently has been gone for about 6 days. (About the 17th or 18th) But my other kid and wife are showing no signs of anything. We'll see.

Kentucky's overall confirmed coronavirus cases jumped to 163 Tuesday with at least one case stemming from a "coronavirus party," Gov. Andy Beshear said, admonishing the practice and calling for an immediate end to such gatherings.

“This is the part where I, the person that tells everybody to be calm, have to remain calm myself," Beshear said. "Because anyone who goes to something like this may think that they are indestructible, but it’s someone else’s loved one that they are going to hurt.”

“We are battling for the health and even the lives of our parents and our grandparents," he added. "Don’t be so callous as to intentionally go to something and expose yourself to something that can kill other people. We ought to be much better than that.”

Mississippi has one the highest infection rates in the country but based on this garbage of a headline “governor cracks down” you would think we had a governor that was showing real leadership and taking decisive action. I wonder what the headline would have been if the governor’s skin was a little darker and it took him this long to do the bare minimum.

Kingfish,

Can you make a post about Certificate of Need laws in MS?

In the days ahead, no one can say anything in MS (or many other states—> looking at NY) about hospital capacity when the state government dictates who can/can’t expand, build new hospital rooms, build new ICU beds, or build a new hospital.

Any enterprising MS politician who took this issue up could be a game changer.

Mayors all over this state and their attorneys are meeting frantically, attempting to figure out where their already imposed restrictions stand with the Governor's late rules. Reeves staff members are teleconferencing with them (as of yesterday) to help figure things out. Some mayors are sticking with their tougher rules, some are backing off, some are confused. Mass confusion, which is where Tate prefers to operate.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
