Looks like you hillbilles aren't doing your part to flatten the curve. You will reap what you sow.
Next week 5000...how many hospital beds does Mississippi have?
More testing = more cases. It’s the death rate that people need to pay attention to
I wonder if there is anyone totally ignorant of how this virus spreads? I wonder if some people know but don’t care?
Tate Reeves needs to issue a quarantine order. We have the data from other states so it is no mystery what is about to happen. MS will have at least about 10,000 cases before Easter.
1:18 pm You can see from the threads of other virus related pieces that some still don't understand why this is any different from the ordinary flu.
They don't understand how viruses or different
They think they are in the age group to survive and don't care about anyone else and are too foolish to realize that their age doesn't mean they don't have an undiscovered underlying condition.
The golfer didn't understand that he touching the cup, touching the flag pole, touching anything going in or going out could spread the virus to another.
The ignorance about how viruses is bad enough, but the absolute cluelessness about how this puts the medical system at risk , the government systems at risk and the economic system at risk if astounding.
The clueless can't imagine that they could have an accident or heart attack or trip and hit their head and they might not be able to get ordinary care.
I suppose the clueless imagine that those shutting things down are doing so for their own amusement.
We can't fix stupid. We just can't.
We are still very early in the process. Time from infection to death is something like 17 days. With the first cases reported just 11 days ago it is time for the deaths to start ramping up. Too many idiots are focusing on today’s total deaths of just one while being too stupid to realize the other 206 confirmed along with those recently infected but haven’t been tested yet already have their clocks ticking. If you want an accurate comparison you have to use today’s cumulative deaths with confirmed cases from 10-14 days ago. The 127 cases confirmed this weekend won’t be recovered/dead for another week or two.
Sadly, too many don't take this seriously. I understand needing to go to the store, but twice a day every day? Get over being stir crazy and just try staying home for a day. Just try it.
12:39: What are you sowing?
People in general are stupid and don’t think the rules apply to them. Maybe some trial lawyers can start suing for reckless endangerment of public health. Someone needs to do something. If you look at the stats, our new case numbers keep going up where most other states are starting to decline or level off. No wonder we’re always 49th or 50th. As the saying goes, you can’t fix stupid.
I bet if you told them this virus would take away their desire for sex, drugs and alcohol, we wouldn’t see anybody for 6 months and this thing would clear right up.
Don’t worry guys. Half-illiterate commenters on this site have assured me that “It’S jUsT tHe fLu.”
Most peoples in Mississippi think this pandemic is a Dark State conspiracy. I was at The Home Depot just yesterday & it was packed to the gills. Some good ole boys were spitting their chewing wad onto the ground while other strolled on it with their foot heading into the store.
I'm reposting in this thread. Sorry for the formatting.
In an effort to show the real number difference in 'flattening the curve', here are the projected numbers for the next 3 weeks. One shows a 33% daily increase and the other shows 50%.

It occurs to me that we won't actually see _reported_ figures this high since the testing labs can't possibly process more than a few thousand (latest I heard was 4,000 tests a day) tests per day.
2:56, are you just trying to prove how statistics lie, and liars use statistics, or are you just dumb.
"If you look at the stats, our new case numbers keep going up where most other states are starting to decline or level off. No wonder we’re always 49th or 50th. As the saying goes, you can’t fix stupid."
Your "other states" -- the ones that actually ARE ahead of Mississippi are largely based upon large population centers - something Mississippi doesn't have.
To say that we are 49th or 50th 'because' of our actions or inactions has no basis other than your being able to hit the keys on your keypad.
Go back and check your statistics and see what "other states" fit your statement, see what the percentages is of the states (to help your simpleton mind out, that's where you divide the number of states by 50) and come back to us with something that provides information that has some value.
Well it is a type of flu.
I give it the weekend before people out weigh not having money and a job over a virus that has maybe a 1% chance of actually killing you.
Louisiana is still going up as is Georgia. Other states are increasing as well.
I never taught I would see the day Republicans would be sitting around looking for a check from the government.
@3:51 What we have to strive for is a percentage increase of zero or preferably negative. That’s the only way to control the spread and ensure adequate medical care is available. China, South Korea, and other countries have managed to do so. The question is whether we as Americans have the fortitude to make short term sacrifices to accomplish this. Sadly I think there are enough people who will deliberately do exactly the opposite as to make this into a completely uncontrollable pandemic within the next couple of weeks.
These good ole boys re-enforce the adage , Mississippi, poking the world in the eye with a stick since 1820 to the detriment of our citizens!
Hey 4:30,
Who says it’s 1%? Those straight shooters in the Chinese government said 2 or 3%. They very likely understated the condition (that’s kind of their thing). In Italy, where the trajectory of infected people greatly mirrors that of the USA (we are just two weeks behind), it’s more like 8%. That’s approximately one in twelve people. That rate more than doubles for the elderly. And, if a lot of people get it at once, the fact that our healthcare system is overburdened will probably result in an even greater number of deaths.
You can be stupid or you can be mean, but you can’t be both. I know you can’t fix stupid, so in the interest of not being both, please quit discounting a very real virus that will result in innocent people dying.
This thing goes away only if everyone takes it seriously. Please don’t mess it up for the rest of us. And to answer your question, yes, I’ll make sacrifices in an effort to not kill my grandmother.
Hillbillies? Don'tcha mean rednecks and wooleyboogers?
Karma would be the hoarders contracting the virus.
A couple of you debby-downers must be a real joy to live with.
Republicans sitting around waiting on government checks will thousands of Jackson Democrats concentratin' on how to steal that money.
@5:21pm
“On re-evaluation by the National Institute of Health, only 12 per cent of death certificates have shown a direct causality from coronavirus, while 88 per cent of patients who have died have at least one pre-morbidity - many had two or three."
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/have-many-coronavirus-patients-died-italy/
Yeah, we better see all these anti-socialists sending those government checks back or donating. Can’t be accepting these government handouts and still stand on your soap boxes.
@4:47 if it wasn't for checks from the Feds there would be no Miss.
Now if just had a Governor who cared about the people of Mississippi instead of the Republican standard BS lines. Act Governor Reeves please.
We're not Italy. Please stop comparing us to Italy.
Everyone is frustrated. We all get it. In a week or so things will hopefully get back to some form of normalcy.
Actually less than 1% in MS.
@6:49 I hope you’re right, but I doubt it. Two weeks will be April 5. If you are correct the number of new cases should be dropping by then. We’ll see.
@6:51 You can’t state a mortality rate until the cases are either cured or dead. You are using one death against at least 200 active cases. You simply have no idea how many of the 127 cases confirmed in the last two days may die
Please act and do something Tate Reeves. Now is a great time to actually LEAD
@4:47
Republicans look for checks from gov't all the time. It's called mortgage interest deduction, capital gains, farm subsidies, and so on.
@6:49
This is going to break loose and we will be dealing with this for months. Unless person to person spread is stopped (impossible) it will keep increasing.
Go look at my numbers. This is a math problem at its core.
@6:49 In all seriousness... how can you possible say this, hope for this, or even dream of this? There's literally no data anywhere to support this.
Sounds like an awful lot of people here need to read up on the Dunning-Kruger effect.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect
@6:43, what do you want him to do?
Very easy to see that celebrating edumacation has consequences.
It this goes into June, this country is f*cked.
The numbers will increase as the testing increases. Many, many people likely infected, but don’t have symptoms yet. And many with symptoms have not been tested.
Tate Reeves can shut down the state. He can order only essential workers leave the house. He can Oder no evictions for 90 days. He can require protections for workers who have lost jobs. He can work for protection for health care workers. He can expand Medicaid. He can support the public colleges by planning for the return of students. He can wrork with tech resources to get computers in the hands of all our out of school students. HE CAN LEAD. HE CAN WORK.
Dang. I still have to stay on the cart path today at the Country Club of Jackson. All this rain is REALLY inconveniencing my daily 5 some. Best thing about this *virus thingy* is all the offices are closed so I can PLAY GOLF , unencumbered by anything. I can even catch a drink after with Biff, JT, and the crew after. Fun times!
Yeah China could have told the world earlier.
FACTS: South Korea and US both had 1st coronavirus case on same day: Jan 20. Difference: South Korea govt responded by mass testing+quarantines. Trump admin failed to do that. Result: South Korea has 8,900 cases with 94 dead. US 35,000+ cases with over 350 dead+rising.
@9:06
Your comparison is total bullshit. The population of South Korea is less than 60 million. They do not have the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Also, the ROK (South) existed in a state of Martial Law for decades after the armistice with the DPRK (North).
Point being, the population is accustomed to a lack of freedoms.
BTW how many infected and dead in North Korea? The world may never know.
PS a better comparison might be the US to New Zealand. They have a tiny population as well and their infection rates are much higher than ours. Nobody in the media is blaming their (female) leader.
@9:45 Not completely BS. The virus does not recognize nor care about your system of government. South Koren has the highest population density on the planet. So if it's possible for them to get a handle on this, then we should be easier since we are more spread out.
@9:59 said,
"South Koren has the highest population density on the planet. So if it's possible for them to get a handle on this, then we should be easier since we are more spread out."
FACT CHECK
Wrong!
South Korea isn't even in the top 10 countries with highest population density.
