Madison County Deputies arrested Canton attorney Lawrence Blackmon last night for public drunkenness, public profanity, and failure to comply. Deputies encountered Blackmon on a drug raid last night. The police report states Blackmon repeatedly cursed and screamed at deputies as he repeatedly used the "F" word. JJ obtained the report through a public records request. The report states:
Credit: Clarion-Ledger |
On Wednesday March 18th, 2020 Deputy Wallace and I, Deputy Holcomb, were assisting narcotics units as they conducted a search warrant. While standing by with two suspects as well as Jaxavier Williams, a Canton Police Officer who had arrived on scene to offer assistance, we then began to search the vehicle of one of the said suspects with Captain Jones. At this time an individual who identified himself as one of the suspect's attorneys walked directly up to Captain Jones and demanded to know what was going. Captain Jones then told the individual, later identified as Lawrence Stephen Blackmon, to back up. He once again identified himself as an attorney and Captain
Jones stated that was fine but he still needed to back up.
At this time Mr. Blackmon became irate and stated that he needed to "lower his fucking voice when talking to him" and "get out of his fucking face". After the vehicle was searched and narcotics were discovered Mr. Blackmon continued to curse and insult Captain Jones. I was then tasked with standing in the doorway of the business where the search warrant had been conducted and Mr. Blackmon sat on the bench to my right and continued to curse about individual deputies and insult this department, claiming we didn't know what we were doing and that we only had one search warrant for this building and not for the other where deputies had chased a suspect that had fled the scene.
Later Agent Fish was sitting next to me when a lady claiming to be the part owner of the business arrived on scene to speak with him. She asked why deputies were in her business and he calmly stated that narcotics were located inside. When she asked what kind of narcotics Agent Fish stated he could not advise and Mr. Blackmon then told her "don't even entertain these mother fuckers". Then Mr. Blackmon began speaking to someone on the phone and began making comments like "someone should monitor these mother fuckers". Agent Fish then asked if he meant the same for people selling dope in his neighborhood and Mr. Blackmon then screamed "I know you mother fuckers ain't talking to me all the dirty shit y'all do". I then asked Mr. Blackmon why he continued to get louder and he continued to talk over me and continued calling us mother fuckers. At this time I warned him not to say that again and he then stated "what you going to do?". I then instructed Mr. Blackmon to place his hands behind his back and he refused to comply which caused Deputy Wallace, Agent Fish, and myself to forcefully place him in handcuffs.
Blackmon is the son of State Representative and noted attorney Ed Blackmon.

Why exactly are police doing drug raids right now? You're not going to "beat drugs" in the next few months anyway. I mean really. It will be a fun time when half the force is quarantined/sick from exposure, and we see what real lawlessness looks like.
Good thing they didn't stop him at a roadblock......
By the police account, they were perfect gentlemen and in now way escalated the situation. It will be interesting to see if body cam footage backs up their story.
The apple didn’t fall far from the m_____f___ing tree. His momma and daddy raised him well.
In the words of Ron White, "I had the right to remain silent but, I lacked the ability!"
Police routinely, and wrongly, arrest people for "public profanity" all the time. This. Is. Not. A. Crime. It should be stricken from the books. Each case that goes up on appeal gets reversed. Cops who write tickets for this should be sued/suspended/fired.
sometimes punks grow up feeling rich and entitled because daddy got lots of money.
"Why exactly are police doing drug raids right now?" ...should just stop, huh? YAH!!!!
"Police routinely, and wrongly, arrest people for "public profanity" all the time. This. Is. Not. A. Crime." ...cause.this(public profanity).is.our.new.'norm'.now! YAH!!!!!
There is such a thing as "baiting" the cops. Every arrest ain't worth the time or the possible consequences.
While not necessarily a good idea to call the police MF’ers I’m pretty sure there’s about 50 years of Supreme Court case law that says it’s not a crime.
I warned you motherf*ckers months ago about the State Law that can be used to charge someone with "Drunk in Public" simply by cursing. I even cited the damn law. You motherf*ckers laughed and claimed it probably wouldn't hold up in court. Well what you motherf*ckers think NOW?! Ha! Bitches!
The charges may be dismissed but the privileged loudmouth MF got to have his photo made in an orange jump suit and spend a few hours in a cell.
Just another attorney who thinks they are above the law.
Blackmon Privilege. I'm reminded of an occasion some years back. Barbara Blackmon's Jaguar had broken down. She had stopped on the side of the highway and was seen kicking the car. It's shocking, I know, to hear that a Jaguar broke down.
I believe it's been a Mercedes family ever since. Sounds like the son is more of a Jaguar than a Mercedes.
If the police report is true, the man committed at least two real crimes, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct (failure to comply). The former has a maximum sentence of 30 days. The maximum sentence of the latter is 6 months.
“Do you know who I am??” Yes, we do. Please put your hands behind your back.
I don’t understand the whole mentality that if “everybody” does it, it isn’t a crime. “Fighting words” that incite a breach of the peace is absolutely a crime, and there is adequate and current case law to back that up. That includes profanity directed at a police officer.
First of all before you go trying to destroy someone's character, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! Attorney Blackmon WAS NOT arrested for public drunkenness! You people need to stop hating on the Blackmon family because they are Brilliant, Successful and Powerful Black People! You all should focus on trying to fix tort reform that you jealous people sought for MS to try and keep the Blackmons' down, but as Maya Angelou says....STILL I RISE...THE BLACKMONS' KEEP RISING!!!
Mr Blackmon, are you serious? This is not the way we want our young black men to act when dealing with the police/ law enforcement!
Most young men are already struggling financially and don’t need to be giving our money to Justice Court Judges for additional fines for additional stupidity!
The correct way, adhere to the officers commands and go home safe!!! Then, if an Attorney is needed call you, sure it will be pro bono!
However, I’ll just say f-ck you and call another Attorney.
Thug with a license and a last name.
You might beat the rap but you ain't beating the ride....
Somebody’s been watching too many Samuel Jackson movies.
This all knowing “attorney” has been a member of the Mississippi Bar for 1 1/2 years.
Sad to say, but this is supposed to be the upper-crust of a society?
Hey, 1:19, do you know how to tell when it’s time to change the oil in a Jaguar?
When it stops leaking.
1:19, They might own a few Mercedes, but they also have a couple of Bentleys - unless they have recently traded them in.
I imagine the garage in their North Jackson residence has several different automobiles, between the main house and the adjoining guest house.
I'm curious why the use of "white boy" or "cracka-ass" or even my favorite, "chalkie mf'er" weren't recorded or reported?
Ya can't buy class!
A mug shot brings out THE true self!!!
Please do not believe the Blackmons are brilliant. They have used the color of their skin to cry foul on anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Captain Jones should’ve let him see how long his streamlight is. The Blackmons are an embarrassment to anyone that really tries to earn good character.
I'm sure his Daddy will take of everything.
1:49 - it's people just like the Blackmons that have kept blacks down for so many years making millions off of them. Your boy Bennie is another. Could care less about blacks unless there is lots of money to be made off them. Obviously, they have brainwashed you as well.
Do the Blackmons pay jackson jumbalaya for the free promo
It’s real funny how people are commenting on the personal belongings of someone who isn’t even involved in this situation. It sounds like you have a problem with Blackmon Sr.
A few problems I have with this:
1. When Mr. Blackmon approached the officer, and introduced himself, they asked him to step back. And then stated that he said get out his fucking face and to lower your voice...... Unless the officer was aggressive, I don’t think Mr. Blackmon would have to say something like that to them. So it sounds like the officers were loud and all in his personal space when he was actually trying to figure out what was going on with his client. A lot of officers take their authority to the extreme when they think they have the power to talk to people the way that they want. We don’t have to allow this, these same officers are supposed to be here for us, and somehow when they put on this uniform they feel like they are above the laws themselves.
2. There most likely is no body cam footage available because of the horrible atrocities Mississippi law enforcement is allowed to get away with. It’s always going to be the officers word against the defendant. This is why people are using their cellphones now to document and expose the differences in stories. And all so often the officers are misquoting the truths. There’s always 3 versions of a story.
3. For everyone attacking the family who wasn’t even involved like his mother and his father, you sound stupid and jealous. This shows what type of fat pink fingers you are over there typing with. Why is it important for you to know what type of cars are in his garage, and even better, what his house looks like. That’s low key stalkerish. It sounds like they are the center of your city’s conversation even before this case.
4. Why does it matter how long he’s practiced law? That comment of him being an attorney of a year and a half has no relevance to this situation first of all, and it shows that you must be someone who is in a position to know a little too much and is abusing your power of your position (prosecutor, officer, judge, etc.). That wasn’t public knowledge, unless you either work with him or know him personally. If you do know him personally, he either beats you in cases, or is really good at his job for you to hide behind and anonymous comment.
5. I guess the freedom of speech is illegal in Mississippi as well. And for him to be charged with Public drunkenness/profanity.... how is this even the same? I can be sober and cursing in public and you can label me drunk? Wow. I would never reside or visit Mississippi.
I have seen postings about the good things this guy has been trying to do in Mississippi, and it seems like this is a perfect attempt to distract people away from that. They tried the same thing with MLK Jr and Malcolm X. It’s funny that these people with pink fat fingers haven’t changed at all through the years.
I'm really getting tired of the disrespect shown law enforcement.
5:41 - I'm sure you are proud of your enumeration of all your reasons for justifying this arrogant attorney's attitude.
But to address a couple of your points that evidently you fail to recognize:
1) when one is a public figure - either due to their social/financial status or their elected position, their life and lifestyle is placed in a fishbowl. Is it fair? Probably not. But it applies equally well regardless of your race. And the fact that this kid's parents are both elected officials, and the fact that he is living in the lifestyle provided by their having sold their race card to get rich by being put in the mix for several mass tort claims brings that social status issue to him as well.
2) The fact of the type car they drive is not so much as issue as where they garage those many automobiles - at their North Jackson residence which is not in either of their legislative districts - a fact that legally disqualifies them from holding those offices but because of their being a member of the black caucus it is deemed to be the norm and acceptable behavior. (Laws do not apply to them.)
3) The issue that the kid has only been a lawyer for 1 1/2 years is fairly well known to many of us that are not lawyers, judges, or public officials. It wasn't me that made that comment earlier, but I know it as I'm sure several folks in and around the Madison County area do who are not members of that elite society that you accuse us of being (i.e. Members of the MS Bar).
Nice try to defend this arrogant punk. Come back again and give us some more defense of his attitude when you can come up with new reasoning.
Likely involved in the drug trade.
Dear 5:41,
I will be the first to stand with you if there was indeed abuse. True there is a history of horrible abuse of black citizens by law enforcement, and sadly, on occasion even today. But this situation is different. Mr. Blackmon possibly responded and treated officers with this blatant disrespect with this chip on his shoulder, but his behavior warranted arrest. He is no MLK.
Your pink finger comment is just as racist as those you are accusing.
5:41 no doubt your last name is Blackmon.
Men shouldn’t taunt and yell/curse at the police.
Attorney or not.
Comply and you won’t wind up dressed in orange with matching bracelets.
How much billable time did you waste with your response to JJ.
Bet this won’t be Junior’s last time he needs bail money.
But go ahead and blame the m*****f*****s.
5:41: Did you intentionally not try to defend the Charge of Failure to Comply?
It’s unfortunate that this fake news blog isn’t shut down like other businesses around the city during this time. We’d all be better off.
5:41 "..And for him to be charged with Public drunkenness/profanity.... how is this even the same? I can be sober and cursing in public and you can label me drunk? ..."
Make things up much?... (Public drunkenness?...Nope!) His charge is FAILURE TO COMPLY... Dumba$$
JJ = peanut gallery
@5:41 Please stop referring to yourself in the third person, Kenneth Stokes does that and it sounds just as stupid.
Haaaaaaa haaaaaaa haahaa ha ha!
Fake news blog? Proof?
@2:42 ... and he graduated law school in 2014. That should tell you everything you need to know.
5:41, Mr. Blackmon’s admit date is in the Lawyer Directory on the Mississippi Bar’s website. So, yes, it is public knowledge.
The kid did something stupid, was likely drunk. Let him pay his fine and let’s move on. To talk about whole family because of mistake of one person is insane. Ed Blackmon has been one of most successful plaintiff attorneys in state. Clearly the man ain’t no dummy, so I don’t understand some anonymous statement about them not being brilliant. How many millions have you made? How many Bentleys have been parked in your driveway? Whether we like it or not, the Blackmons are likely richer than most commenters on here. That may bother you because he is an attorney. May bother you because he is black. However, a great deal of his success comes from perfecting his craft while we making commenting on an blog about people we don’t know and that don’t know us.
Lastly to say they made their money by keeping blacks down or playing race makes no sense. They made vast majority of their money same way other plaintiffs attorneys make their money....suing people with deep pockets or big insurance policies, especially before tort reform.
"But you made it in a sleazy way" - Tupac Shakur
Practicing politics and racism is not the same as practicing law, though they may be much more lucrative.
Loud talking Rastamon
Being rich and having nice things does not make you brilliant and will never mean you are good people. I don’t care what they spend their money on. They sensationalize every vulnerable situation and feed themselves off of the emotions of the powerless. Sad, sad. White folks do it too. The Blackmons just happen to be the topic of this conversation.
KF: Surely you see that posts like this one, or like ANYthing other than Corona, bring twice the responses. Can you back off the forty a day threads about the virus? Nobody comes here to read that repetitive crap. Plus it's low hanging fruit that you gather from every internet tree.
Why? You aren't reading it.
The other day I posted about Gilmer's criminal problems. It was the lowest read post that day. You guys are reading this stuff.
Part of the problem also is I'm trying to get needed and good information out to y'all and that takes away time from other subjects. Well, right now I"m watching the UMC presser, that means I'm not reading a court file or going somewhere to cover something else.
KINGFISH: I can't find my violin. Can I borrow one of yours?
@KingFish The Blackmons are like red meat to JJ lol
Just pointing this out, and I'm not suggesting something so stupid as racism no longer exists in MS, but if a black dude had gotten into the face of a group of white deputies/agents in 50 years ago, he would have gotten beaten within an inch of his life (or worse). And at the first "MFer," he would have been shot and there would have been no investigation whatsoever. I would also say that 50 years ago, a mouthy white dude getting aggressive/abusive with the cops at the scene of a drug raid would have likely needed some medical attention, too.
I'd offer that Mr. Blackmon getting arrested and what appears to be a more-or-less straightforward report being written up is at least SOME progress. I'd also offer that calling cops "MFers" might be legal - under certain circumstances, but it sure isn't something anyone a proper upbringing or even a lick of common sense does. And it sure isn't something a smart lawyer does when their supposed client has just been served with a search warrant targeting illegal drugs AND illegal drugs were found.
rac·ism
/ˈrāˌsizəm/
noun
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.
I am 5:41. Me pointing out the fact that there were all “fat pink fingers” had no derogatory meaning behind it. It was facts. Regardless if you are in public office, you shouldn’t be dragged into the actions of someone, where you had nothing to do with it. His father wasn’t there. His fathers cars or house weren’t there on the scene either.
Yes I do know him personally. And I didn’t make it an attempt to know as much as you stalkers know online. I think it’s pathetic that you are able to voice your worthless opinions about something that has nothing to do with you, and think I can’t do the same.
They always say if you aren’t talked about you aren’t important. So the Blackmon’s are most likely doing something right.
The true problem you have with the family is that they are black and successful. Cause I guarantee all of you are white. If you weren’t, then what I said earlier wouldn’t have rubbed you so badly, but the truth hurts. So yes I did step in to comment on behalf of my homie. And you can be as mad as you want to. But at the end of the day you beating that keyboard with those fat, dirty pink fingers; and you’re commenting on a family who is doing more than you ever will. They don’t have to comment on your pathetic attempts to defame them, because you are most likely doing nothing with your life other than commenting on someone else’s.
You can feel how you want to feel about it. Racists are ready to label someone guilty no matter the proof. He is black. His family is successful. He has been on the news for exposing the wrong doings of law enforcement. So these racists want him criminalized. All because his dad has money and some cars in his garage, that you can’t afford. I wish you brought that same energy to L.A. and watch how we send you packing on the first pick up truck smoking.
It doesn’t matter who your parents are or even who you are, or what your title is. Disrespecting anyone including cursing or demeaning any LEO in that manner is a crime and should have fines & consequences. The officers were doing their job and deserve EVERYONE’S respect! His God fearing Grandmother would tell Lawrence the same to shut up young man and sit down!!
Can someone please translate the crazy on 7:41's last gibberish post?
Thanks
It amazes me how many of you are jealous to the bone of anyone who has been successful, whether black or white.
I know, like and respect the Blackmons.
If you look at the facts, and only the facts, Lawerence's behavior was unacceptable. Why young folks think it is ok to speak to anyone like he did to the cops is beyond me. It is embarrassing at best.
He needs a scolding from his parents and probably a few rounds of anger management therapy. Educated folks who are officers of the court just don't act that way. Period. Look what it got him.
All this stuff about his family, race and politics is just irrelevant.
By the way, Lawrence's bar admit date is September 25, 2018. Just go to msbar.org. Every lawyer's admission date is published. (I think 5:41 needs to back off from his/her suggestion that one who knows LB's bar admit date must be abusing his/her position. That is just a dumb, uninformed statement. As such, 5:41 has no credibility whatsoever. Zilch.)
Finally, if alcohol was involved, it might be time for this young man to look in the mirror and reflect on whether or not he needs to be drinking at all.
I like my pink fingers.
2:11 a.m., I think I can at least partially interpret 7:41's last post for you:
arrogant[ar-uh-guhnt]
1. making claims or pretensions to superior importance or rights; overbearingly assuming; insolently proud.
2. characterized by or proceeding from arrogance, or a sense of superiority, self-importance, or entitlement.
As further elucidation, I offer the following:
hateful [heyt-fuhl]
1. arousing hate or deserving to be hated.
2. unpleasant; dislikable; distasteful.
3. full of or expressing hate; malignant; malevolent.
Got nothing against the Blackmons. Ed Blackmon is probably my favorite lawyer to watch in the courtroom. If my ass was in trouble and I needed a criminal defense lawyer and money was no object, he is one of the ones I would hire.
I don't know Lawrence; never met him. However, Ed Blackmon is one of the most down to earth individuals I've ever met. He knows who he is, knows where he came from, and treats people with the upmost respect. He and his wife worked hard and became successful attorneys. That is not a bad thing. By the way, he has Caucasian clients also and sometimes represents Caucasian owned businesses. When will Mississippians become colorblind?
