Governor's Thread

Title fight tomorrow as Tater and the Waller square off for the Republican nomination tomorrow.  Jim Hood waits in the wings, desperately hoping Waller forced the Lieutenant Governor to spend a fatal chunk of his war chest.  Comment on the race here.  Fire away.

Tate is an empty suit. He will be a miserable governor. To paraphrase GS Patton, if I found myself between Tater Eaves and Conway Twitty, I'd run in both directions.

The next four years are gonna suck hard.

The Little Emperor is a little nervous.

I hate Obamacare because I'm 32 with a family to support and it absolutely killed us so don't get me wrong Waller planning to expand medicaid doesn't impress me much but Tate's attach commercials (especially the ones on this blog) I have found to be indefensible and ridiculous. I'm probably gonna have to vote for a higher gas tax.

Never Tater!!!!

I’m hoping Tate’s arrogant ways and my way or the highway attitude are about to hand him a bitter defeat. I would be ashamed if I could not win my own precinct or county. It is very telling, his home folks can’t stand him.

Waller wins 51-49 and then destroys Hood after Trump comes down and endorses him. Waller has too much momentum. Even if Tate wins, he still destroys Hood. If you think Hood can win, you should spend more time outside of Jackson and Oxford.

The funniest thing in MS politics is Tate reaching out to Chris McDaniel for his endorsement to get the ill-informed/redneck vote. They have been lighting up facebook with misinformation since then. McDaniel is looking for any sign of political relevance in this state and is bowing down to the establishment he once preached against. Chris McDaniel is now on the same team and Tate, Phil, Haley, and the others. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. What a joke and spineless move. He doesn't dare tell his followers that Waller isn't increasing taxes and that it is a tax swap.

Bill Waller is the best person to run for governor in a long, long time.

I'm impressed by the number and resumes of many supporting Waller---QUESTION--aren't these the SAME people that have been responsible for guiding the Ship of the State of Mississippi for the last 50 or so years? Is the angst of the Ms establishment re Tate similar to the hatred the NATIONAL establishment has for Trump?

Sent in my second contribution to the Waller campaign last week. It wasn't much but we all do what we can do.

Anonymous said...

I will spend a nickle a gallon for a gas tax increase. Think about it, that's $1 a week on a gas fill up or $4 a month or just say $50 a year. That's a lot less that a front end alignment each year. I just want the money to go in a special find that the legislature can't touch. That's always been our problem. Tate looks like Elmer Fudd and he might possible lose to Jim Hood.

My family and I are voting for Waller. Tate is the Republican version of Hillary Clinton by promoting "pay to play" politics. Plus, Reeves's negative TV commercials filled with lies and half-truths are too much to stomach. Reeves must be very worried to spend the amount of money that he has spent since the primary election. Waller has run a positive campaign.

General Waller 50.2%
"Fat Face" Tate 49.8%

Cynical Sam said...

The Tater Tot ads are stretching the truth. Only a desperate lifer politician runs hit ads.

Mr. Waller wants to eliminate the income tax and replace it with a higher gasoline tax. This way everyone pays, not just those who work.

The Medicaid recipients would have to pay monthly, so they would have some skin in the game.

None of this can happen without the legislature's participation.

I voted for Mr. Waller on Friday.

Tater Not!

1) Waller
2) Hood
3) Tate

Never voted for a single Democrat in my life, but if it is Tate or Hood, I'll be holding my nose and voting Hood. Please don't let Trump come endorse Waller...

Anyone thinking of voting for Tate should google Reeves BRIDGE Act. Tates bridge and road plan where he takes the authority to decide which bridges and roads get built and repaired away from MDOT and gives it to the governor!! He thinks he will be the next gov. and he could reward his contributors and buddies with a new road. Thankfully the House of Rep. killed the bill after Tate rammed it thru the Senate.
NEVER Tater!

tate will win. hood will get the popular vote, but not enough counties to win the election. tate as governor.

one thing for sure, Tater and his adds area absolute insult on the intelligence of decent people. Shame on him and state Republicans that signed off on such. I've read about Waller's healthcare plans, and infrastructure, and as a conservative christian, I can take no issue with any of it, and as long as I see results (i.e roads and bridges, and local hospitals not being sold off to out of state corporations), WALLER it will be.

Jim Hood, I just don't like where all of your money has come from.....

Republican Primary is irrelevant. Butthurt Republicans will elect Jim Hood. Just a matter of whether it’s Tater Haters or Tater Tots. Phil Bryant May very well be the last Republican governor of Mississippi.

We have many honorable Veterans in this Great State! I don’t give a shit what the commercials say about General Waller. Tate has not served one freaking day in uniform.

As a life long democrat and retired veteran, General Waller has my vote.

Who would you stand by, a Soldier or a dogger? I’ll go with the Soldier! Odds are better!!!

Anonymous said...

If Waller gets close to 50%, Hood will be the next Governor. If Waller wins tomorrow, he will be the next Governor. If Tate wins by a landslide tomorrow, he will be Governor for the next 8 years.

Bobby Harrison's requiem for Waller yesterday doesn't bode well for Waller's tomorrow.

I was visiting my 79 year-old aunt last week when she started talking about Tate Reeves' attack ads. She said, "People just don't like that." She literally lives at the 'fork of the creek.' I found her comment to be telling & most likely prophetic.

Anonymous said...

Reeves by 10+ barring something unusual happening.

Anonymous said...

Tate exceeded the Peter Principle about six jobs ago. A Waller v. Hood would be a great election, as MS would win either way, although I think Waller would win in that match-up. 3:53, Hood keeps beating Republicans every election, so why do you think he can't beat Tate? Plus 5 former Republican Party chairmen are behind Waller because they don't think Tate can beat Hood.

Anonymous said...

The ads come from the Barbour Boys. They can make more money off if Tate. Also I suck at this I am not a robot game. I keep hitting all the traffic lights I see and it keeps making me do more. If I ever get this posted I am done with this BS.

Anonymous said...

Can't unsee the fact that Waller bumper stickers outnumber Tate from Southhaven to Pass Christian.

People just don't like Tate Reeves. Maybe if he waited another decade and gained more experience and mellowed out. He is still too petulant. We the people don't owe him shit and he ain't ready.

Anonymous said...

6:33, you made me laugh with your traffic light fight.
I wish the Barbour Boys would learn that the majority of the voting population hate their hate ads and mailers. And, Haley, why oh why did you endorse Tate?

Anonymous said...

Tate has tried to make conservative a synonym of libertarian. Supporting raising the gas tax does not make you not a conservative, it makes you not a libertarian.

Libertarians are autistic atheists. Waller's got my vote.

Anonymous said...

I also served under General Waller's command in the 155th BCT. He is a man of honor and integrity. If you don't care who gets the credit you can accomplish great things. Let's put a leader in the office of governor and not a spineless politician.

Marathon Mom said...

I can tell you that if Tate wins I will be voting Democrat in the election - NO TATE FOR OUR STATE - WALLER FOR GOVERNOR!

Anonymous said...

Why didn’t Tate show up for the candidate forum tonight?

Anonymous said...

It’s all going to come down to who’s more motivated to get out and vote tomorrow. I have so much to do but I don’t care for Tate enough to be inconvenienced to go vote for waller.

The letter that Tate’s wife sent out reeked of desperation and turned off a lot of people in rankin county from voting for him.

Anonymous said...

Tate is what is wrong with politics. This republican will vote Hood before Tate.

The gas tax should be increased. It is how roads are built and paid by anyone traveling our roads, including out of state travelers and trucks. The funds cannot be touched by legislature. Without the last increase in the gas tax, we would not have the infrastructure we have now. Problem is, it's getting old. Time for a gas tax increase.

Tate only knows the republican taking points...."no taxes" "no Obamacare". Doubt he understands the economics behind either of those, good or bad. Hope Napoleon goes away soon.

Anonymous said...

6:33 - laughable. You claim about the Barbour Boys is a joke, when you consider that the only reason Waller is in this race was so Josh Gregory could keep his money train running - Gregory recruited him so he could stay in the high cotton he has enjoyed for the past eight years.

But, I guess since most of these comments come out of Gregory's Frontier Strategies offices and associates, you probably already know that.

Anonymous said...

I do understand being a fiscal conservative but I am a business person and know if you do not maintain your assets such as real estate today you will spend multiples more repairing it in the future. The roads in this state are the arteries of commerce and if we don’t maintain them there will not be businesses to keep our educated people working. Tate has been in a very powerful position and has done very little except wait for his term as Governor.

Anonymous said...

I’ll just post my favorite quote from the movie War Games ...”I’d piss on a spark and lug if I thought it would help”.

Anonymous said...

I’m voting for Tate tomorrow for the same reason I voted for him three weeks ago: because he understands that being a conservative means not growing government. Tate is very disliked by the Jackson lobbyist crowd that lives off the government in Hinds, Rankin and Madison and comments on these threads, which is why he did poorly in the metro area. Thankfully, most of the state agrees with me and wants a real conservative. Tate by at least 10 points tomorrow. And I can’t wait to hear all of you butthurt liberals masquerading as Republicans bemoaning it tomorrow night.

Anonymous said...

I really appreciate the inept prick who referred to Senator Mcdaniel supporters as "ill-informed/rednecks" good job there duffus you must be from oh let me guess Madison or Rankin Co? If there has ever been a bigger screwing in the history of MS politics it is when ole haley and the boys got in bed with Bennie to keep Sen. Mcdaniel out of Washington because he was gonna rain on the lobbyist parade!!!

Albert Schweitzer said...

Not that my (or any other solitary) opinion matters, just that of the majority of voters who show up tomorrow.

That said, I am impressed that Mr. Waller is a man of accomplishment. The Reeves fellow is unimpressive,ds and much, much less accomplished at best. He was on national tv and sat with his mouth open, looking retarded, or perhaps cretinous. Perhaps his thyroid level should be checked? Waller, on the other hand, looks genteel and thoughtful.

There are many things that are needed here. Roads and health care are two prominent ones and they won't be fixed by our becoming turtles and withdrawal into our shells. Reeves best facet seems to be his allegedly ambitious wife.

If Waller survives tomorrow, he will probably be elected over Hood, who has a slick affect but seems as inert and unproductive as Reeves.
If Reeves wins, it might be more of a toss up as to the final election.

Best of luck to Mr. Waller, and to all of us.

Anonymous said...

All you Tate haters may just as well get over yourselves. Waller is a liberal democrat just like his daddy was. He may be posing as a Republican but he is just another RINO. Tate will get the Republican nomination tomorrow and Hood will just wind up as an also ran.

Is it a 'Major' cosmic foreshadowing of fate that Kingfish posted a story of MSU's football cheating woes, followed by this post about Mississippi's second favorite sport, "Politics"?
Where undoubtedly, come Wednesday morning, the MSU faithful, aka "dawgs" aka "bully block" aka "we ring true" will have to answer that fateful question that will clang for an answer, "how fast can we makeup to an actual MSU graduate that has a real record of loyalty and pride to MSU because we betrayed our beloved starkpalace grad for a Milsaps grad we sucked up to and now our MSU grad won?" Was that a run-on?? Damn the grammar said me the non-MSUMilsapsian! If only I had a tutor.

NEWSFLASH 4:59 - There ain't no Electoral College process in Mississippi elections. The popular vote is the only one that counts. You must have graduated over in Issaquena where there ain't no schools.

Very telling that Tate was the ONLY runoff candidate to skip the Republican forum last night in his home area. He sent his wife instead, who merely recited her desperate passive-aggressive letter sent to the Junior League database last week. Tate has zero to offer for our state. That’s why he can only attack others- he has nothing to show. Chief Justice Waller has demonstrated over and over again that he has the temperament, intellect, and attitude to move this state forward. So thankful he chose the high road and didn’t go negative, because you can bet there is a lot out there about Tate that he could have used. My vote and everyone I’ve talked to- from the coast to north MS, is going to Waller.

Anonymous said...

Tate lies when he says a 5 cent gasoline hike will cost the average family $500 a year. American drivers consume an average of 656 gallons of gasoline a year each. If tax on gasoline was raised 5 cents, it would cost the typical driver $32.80 annually. That would be about $65 a year for two drivers in a family. Let’s double the average for those who drive more. So, now you have $130 a year for a two driver family.

For a family to pay $500 extra a year because of a 5 cent per gallon tax increase, that family would have to buy 10,000 gallons of gasoline a year. At 20 miles a gallon, that family would have to drive 200,000 miles a year in order to pay an extra $500 a year in gasoline tax.

Wake up, folks. Tate is not truthful.

Anonymous said...

We are in a pickle. Tate doesn’t care about the people and if Hood avoids corruption like he has avoided James Bobos tampering with the town of Pelahatchie situation he is not needed either. Waller for Governor because it appears the other two do not care.

Anonymous said...

The people who hate Tate and think MS is so bad are such hypocrites. Where is your disdain for the radical democrats controlling Jackson and how bad it is? Seems to me you NE Jackson snobs are insecure about Jackson but are willing to bash Tate and MS at any rate.

I just voted for Waller and felt very good about it.

Reeves's campaign of hate, lies, and misinformation crosses the line of decency and comes straight out of the Roger Ailes playbook. The face of Mississippi should not be Tate Reeves.

These "never-Taters" are making me re-consider my vote. I voted for Waller in the primary. Maybe not this time. The Waller supporters sound as irrational and hate filled as AOC and Talib.

Anonymous said...

@6:45 a.m. I think Tate is taking all the gas tax revenue, including that paid by businesses, and then applying it to Mississippi families under the theory that all additional expenses of the business will be passed on to its customers.

Personally I'm voting for Waller because Tate just can't come across as clear and competent. He's got some ideas but just can't seem to make them into a decent platform with a relatable goal of making Mississippi better.

The governor, in the general election, has to win the popular vote AND a majority of the vote in a majority of the state house districts (122). See Miss. Const. Art. 5, sec. 140.

Sitting in a meeting at MEMA with a hurricane in the Gulf.....

Tater-tot showed with his crew and plopped down. After getting briefings by county directors, weather bureau and other state offices as where they were in preparation for approaching storm and the meeting was over, Tater looked around and said: "I had no idea all this was here and what y'all did..."

Way to go knucklehead....It's your friken job to know what happens in all government agencies, not just the legislature. In the 8 years I was there, that was one of the most idiotic statements I heard.

Anonymous said...

I wonder it Boss Hog Tater will try to apply this standard to the primary run-off if he loses the popular vote to Waller but wins the majority of house districts. I'm sure he will even though the primary is run by the party and as noted above, the vote/district combo only applies to the General Election. And now....more TateTrash.

I know General Waller well. He is honest, hard-working, selfless, not afraid to make hard decisions (like how to get our roads fixed, education, teacher pay, saving local hospitals) and he loves Mississippi. Tater and his cronies care only about using the governor's office to get rich(er). Come on Mississippi, choose the best man for once.

Anonymous said...

When are we going to start voting for state politicians that all of MS can support instead of 45-55% of MS supports? When it is all said and done, we should be putting forth options that are significantly better than Hood and Tate? Is Waller that guy? I do not know with any certainty. It is too late for this election cycle, but let's bring forth someone the entire state can be proud of next election cycle.

Anonymous said...

...but let's bring forth someone the entire state can be proud of next election cycle.

Offer up some names. Provide more than lofty generalities.

Anonymous said...

Isn’t it Tate that takes a bodyguard with him everywhere? Or am I getting him confused with another politician?

Anonymous said...

Tate's entire campaign premise is that we don't need to change anything in a State that is statistically last in every meaningful category. You only need to drive our roads, go to our hospitals, or go to our schools to realize we desperately need change.

We aren't going to lose our "conservative values" to Californians by voting for a gas tax, and it doesn't make you a liberal Democrat to vote for Medicaid expansion. Our own Republican Vice President supported Medicaid expansion in Indiana, and no one has ever accused Mike Pence of being a Democrat.

I'm voting Waller today, and if Tate wins, I'll be voting Hood in November. It's time for things to change.

Anonymous said...

Tate wants to tout his record in politics, but his record is one of failure.

But it's never Tate's fault.

In the FY17 budget, Tate as Lt. Governor blamed a staff error for miscalculating the general fund, leaving the state $56.8 million short.

In FY19, Tate blamed MDE when the teacher pay raise came in $14 million short because it didn't include all teachers.

And that doesn't include his $2 million personal road project that MDOT determined was entirely unnecessary and was pushed ahead by pressure from Reeves's office.

But what Tate did accomplish was a massive tax cut at a time when hundreds upon hundreds of Mississippi bridges were permanently closed because they failed to meet government standards.

Anonymous said...

I do not agree with everything Waller has said but if I were in a crisis situation (say disaster or the like) and I had to have Reeves or Waller next to me, I would choose Waller. Just got back from voting and it was a steady crowd. Maybe the turnout will be higher than expected.

@ 6:45 am. YES! Tate's lie on the gas tax has been one that is just irrefutably ridiculous. You'd have to be in a car all year to get to $500.

@11:16

I unfortunately do not know many people around this state on that level, but I do know the records of the current candidates. I'm neither R or D. Since these two parties dominate the landscape of politics, they need to find, within their own houses, candidates that are worthwhile for the whole of the entire state.

You do not think we should have loftier goals for our great state?

Anonymous said...

Well said 11:24; Seems logical enough...I agree completely.

Proud to rock my "I Voted" sticker today, after voting for the only worth-while candidate for Gov on the ballot, Waller.

I think most Mississippians will agree that having to be subjected to the Tot's stinking attack ads everywhere on a daily basis for the last few months, has been much like a root canal from hell. Just pull that sucker out already.

Later tater.

Anonymous said...

1:04 - Mississippi doesn't have party registration so I must conclude that your claim of "traditional Democrats" in the Delta means "Black People". If you didn't vote in the primary, you can vote in either parties run-off. It wasn't so long ago that the "White Republicans" in this state were "White Segregationist Democrats". Maybe you should rethink your racism and join the 21st century.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
