That's a little too close for comfort. Only a block from Jackson Academy.
One block from JA. How cosmopolitan.
perception of crime
Flee Hines while you still can.
The Boondocks should run ads on stories like these.
Generally drive by shootings only occur when a certain individual is targeted. Exception is during late 1980's and very early 1990's it was used as a form of street gang initiation. Shootings are targeted unless it's a mistake of wrong identity.
Jackson ain’t what it used to be.
Can you say Moss Creek apartments. JA years ago thankfully purchased a large apartment complex and now this one is only one remaining. Someone would need to purchase that complex and level it. This is the haven of sh!t happening in that area. Apartment dwellers in masses bring in criminal elements.. look at Ridgeland, Jesus... I live in NE Jackson and people can say what they will about Mary in Madison but she keeps apartments out. I own 7 rentals in Madison and I screen all carefully. No slum Lord here.
10:23 AM, does your statement apply to any particular region or is it a broad-sweeping statement as it appears to be?
I'm not sure if we should be comforted by the fact that all drive-by's are targeted, unless they mistake the identity of the victim!
A Kia Soul shot up in the City with Soul. How ironic.
When are we all going to finally stand up and point a finger at the culture causing all this violence?
This is exactly why my children don’t attend JA. Nice school. Dangerous area.
My kids are at JA and I’m seriously reconsidering that right now. Great school and my only complaint is the location. I don’t want my kids driving around there and risking getting caught up in stray bullets. It’s very sad and I don’t see it getting any better anytime soon.
@10:50 AM
And what culture would that be? Is it the institutional white supremacy that denied equal rights to people of color for 200 years or is the the culture of violent hate that manifests itself every day from the angry white males with assault rifles commiting mass murder in this country today?
Maybe its just the culture of white cowboys shooting each other on Grit or MeTV every day on TV.
"Drive-by" is misleading. It was a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting.
Maybe another hot cocoa meet and great would stop the violence.
Indeed, when are the friggin' pols going to address the real reasons for this violence, and IT IS NOT GUNS!!!!!!
it was a fight between the shooter and the driver of the Kia.
Calm down people, this is what happens when we have 400 million guns floating around in our country.
Sadly, Jackson Academy has big problems inside of their school gates, as well. They need to clean house in administration. Students are leaving left and right. That, in addition to the area that has gone down hill with violence.
11:05
Like the 18 year old that was walking down Ridgewood road a few months ago and was hit by a stray bullet? In the middle of the afternoon. The area has just gotten too bad. Especially in the last ten years.
I hate that this happened and it is so close to home. I am comforted that it wasn't random.
However, can we talk about how this gun legislation is going to work? If you think taking the guns away is going to correct the problem..how will you make the non law abiding citizens give up their guns. I just see lots of non violent folks complying and then the violent people still holding guns in their hands?
11:43
What culture dominates Jacktown besides a culture of corruption? The fact of the matter is most of these crimes are committed by repeat offenders. Gun laws aren't enforced to keep guns out of known felons hands. Hinds doesn't really keep its know offenders from terrorizing the public.
I have to wonder do you not want guns at all or just out of the so-called "oppressors" hands? Do you believe in the lawful right of self defense or should one rely upon the State to be one's the savior? At what point does the white population drop low enough that Jackson starts looking in the mirror, if ever? Hint: as of 2010 census that percentage stands at 18.4%.
The headline is very misleading. This was a targeted shooting, not a drive-by random shooting.
It could happen anywhere.
1:54 PM, explain how the headline suggests a random shooting??? The headline reads "Drive-By Murder on Ridgewood". Do you think all drive-by's are random? Maybe the one's that you participate in!
Cars involved? Guns involved? Yes and yes. Thus, "drive-by".
Murder? Yes. Thus, an intent behind the crime. Not manslaughter. So not random.
By the way, do you have an alibi for last night between the times 11pm and 1am???
I am sure the Mayor has a committee that has been formed and meeting to evaluate what to do about the crime in Jackson since he took office but have they met yet? If there's a committee, I can help but wonder if there's anyone on the committee from the 39211 area. If not, then the Mayor will need to form another committee to look at getting equal representation in his city as well on all his committees across the board...crime...roads...airport, etc.
"By the way, do you have an alibi for last night between the times 11pm and 1am???
Why yes I do! I was sound asleep with my handgun next to me in my nightstand. So far, in 15 years, I haven't had to use it, all the while, living in NE Jackson, sending kids to JA, going to work in NE Jackson, and taking kids to soccer practice in NE Jackson.
Next thing you know the shooting will have been caused by the amassing of white kids at JA whose parents voted for Trump...makes about as much since as the allegations being strewn by the main stream media on the recent mass shootings.
Great for you 2:49. The rest of us care about our families enough to not needlessly endanger them. But, please stay. As long as you’re there, the criminals won’t bother coming to my area.
"Great for you 2:49. The rest of us care about our families enough to not needlessly endanger them. But, please stay. As long as you’re there, the criminals won’t bother coming to my area."
LOL. Carolwood is not dangerous.
You people have said it's bc we have millions of guns in this country... look at chicago!!! Only 23% black population and the most strict gun laws in the US. Guns aren't the problem. Illegal guns and gangs as well as anti depressions meds.
Being asleep with a handgun is not an alibi. So in 15 years all you've done with your life is work and send kids to school and go to soccer practice. I pity you!!! Maybe that handgun next to your bed is a little overkill.
It’s the culture of accepting this stuff as normal. Black shootings, mass shooting, middle eastern religious crazies that....fill that in.
People are dying everyday for stupid reasons by all sorts of violence. The classifications and motives are really only good for sound bites & only really matter in prosecution. The end is the same. Dead people.
None of this okay. But we pretty much have to just keep chugging. From what I gather, My fathers generation used to bring rifles to school simply left in a truck and nothing was thought of it. No mass shootings.
It’s not the case anymore. You can point your finger at video games, the NRA, whatever boogey man you choose.
But what ya don’t need to do is try to sell the idea that what has happened to this country & will likely continue is okay or normal.
We’re all just a little bit scared that we could simply be out and about at the wrong place and wind up dead for no particular reason at all known to us.
In and around the immediate area of JA is just as safe as schools in Madison or Rankin County. The problem is the main arteries like Old Canton Road or Ridgewood which like Northside Drive or HWY 51 lead to more dangerous neighborhoods. It's these neighborhoods where the perpetrators live and start trouble. They could have done this shooting near Eastover or in Ridgeland just as easily. Stop fanning the flames of fear. JA is O.K.
$hit happens everywhere. Bottom line... what happened to the local news "bottom line" segment by the way?
Whatever you have to tell yourself to make yourself feel better 6:11. The stray bullet that killed the 18 year old on Ridgeland in the middle of the afternoon could just as easily been in JA. Plus, where around there do you want your spouse or child stopping to get gas? It’s a war zone.
6:11, I’m pretty sure no one has claimed eastover or Ridgeland to be safe areas. Maybe fifteen years ago. Not today.
The unintended consequences of foolish lawmakers passing open-carry and laxed gun laws. But the irony is guns don't kill people only the idiots with the gun in your hand.
BTW, computers don't hack company data only the people using them.
IDIOT LOGIC!!!!
Live and work in NE Jackson. I Wish someone would compare the chances of being randomly killed/injured in NE Jackson versus the increased chance of being killed/injured in a car accident due to all the time spent driving from the suburbs. My money's on your chances of dying/injury are greater in a car accident than violent action.
10:55 PM, you're probably texting and driving this right now aren't you?
Just one more prayer vigil will fix it...
9:04 & 9:06
You probably work in that area of town keeping a wealthy families yard or cleaning the pool. Maybe for the CSpire family or you likely rent a week at one of these peoples beach house in the summer for 5 days. Plenty of nice safe places to pump gas. I go to shell near baseball fields. I live here because it's close to St.D and I'm on call often. I can afford to send my kids to private schools. I have 2 sons and 2 daughter's. Guess what... most of my kids classmates live in Jackson as well. Stop with your ridiculous logic.
10:55 p.m. - people in Jackson are driving crazier than ever. Your chances of being in a wreck are much higher in the city. I see people flying through red lights. Last week a guy going south on state approaching Broadmoor decided to pass all of us in front of him. The cars in the opposite direction had to move to the side of the road to avoid being hit by the crazy guy. Jackson gets crazier every day.
This wasn't a "drive-by" shooting. It was a shooting from one car to another.
And for you rocket surgeons above, the JA isn't open at MIDNIGHT!
Jackson is and will remain a major employment hub. If people want to commute from the suburbs, that's fine - it's their choice. And if you work in another city and live there, that's fine too. More power to you. But don't throw stones at those of us who choose to live near work (Jackson) by creating false or exaggerated narratives. I'm quite sure you don't care, but for what it's worth I work in a demanding, high stress job and living where I work allows me to spend an extra 6 hours a week with my family, or doing other things I enjoy instead of sitting my ass in a car. And by the way, long commutes are also linked to a sedentary lifestyle and serious health issues.
2 facts
The Wall Around JA works to keep this stuff out.
You are more likely to be killed by a Clinton than hit by a stray bullet in Jackson.
9:04 PM - stop with the FAKE NEWS! It wasn't a "stray bullet" in Ridgeland; it was mistaken identity. Let me help you; they intentionally shot someone, but it was the wrong kid.
Your much more likely to be shot in the head by a Clinton 2 times and have it ruled a suicide. The Clinton crime family is a tough as a Italian NYC crime family. It would make Tony Soprano look like Mr. Rodgers
It’s comical the Jackson people believe the only jobs around are in Jackson. That might be the case for government jobs, but more and more businesses are leaving every day. There’s plenty of good paying jobs in the ‘suburbs’.
6:38am
If your kids attend private school, then most of your children's classmates DO NOT live in Jackson.
Last I checked at both JA and Prep (you can map the addresses) 75% of students of both schools are addresses outside of Hinds County
That said, JA does have 3 ex-Navy Seals who work or are on campus quite a lot
@8:18 AM - It can't be too stressful if you have the time to post on JJ at 8:18 AM.
@9:22 AM - It's SEALs, not Seals (marine mammal).
Gonna get worse when the Southern Poverty Law Center takes over the Hinds DA office in January. A lot worse. Alternative sentencing for everyone! That is, if you get charged in the first place.
@ 9:22
Your out of your mind! I will check with Lawrence headmaster of JP... lives in Jackson down from me. My kid also goes to jp... no way your numbers are even remotely close
No one and no legislation has ever be introduced that would take your guns away unless:
You can't pass a background check ( only 5% of guns are currently sold without background checks and the proposed legislation Mitch won't take off his desk fixes that)
OR
You are arrested for a felony, threatening to kill or injury others,
domestic violence, terrorism, deemed a threat to yourself or others ( if found these charges are false, you'll get them back)
The assault rifle ban worked by the way. Look at the years between the ban and when it expired in 2004 , see what's happened.
There is no slope to get slick on this one since laws and the Constitution and a conservative Supreme Court are in place.
Will we ever again be able to be pragmatic. The screaming ninnies on the far right and left are going to destroy this country ( see Syria and Afghanistan...civil war is messier these days)
10:23, the statistics simply don't support your claim. Study after study have proved the assault weapon ban did NOT work! Look at the studies yourself. They are legion.
9:36 Unfortunately, you are SO right about that! The SPLC is licking their chops about taking over that office! We all just THINK things are bad now.......He's gonna make RSS look like an executioner compared to him
9:22 I don’t doubt that JA is safe, while school is in session. The problem is getting there and getting back. I wouldn’t want my wife driving into Jackson everyday, much less my teenagers. And just think of how bad it will be in ten years, when many readers of this blogs children will start driving. It certainly isn’t going to get any better.
Gun ban? You mean basically like Chicago has? Look at Venezuela they have gun ban. Look at brasil. Rio and Sao Paulo has more murders than any city in the US gun ban. Look at Switzerland every household has a gun little to no crime. Largest mass shooting in modern time was in Sweden gun ban. Gun bans only make it impossible for legal law abiding citizens to protect themselves.
@12:30
My son turned 8 yrs old last week. Saturday he had his birthday party near JA at our house and his class was invited. Parents from Madison and NE Jackson were there. No one complained. If your wife in in junior league she drives to Jackson as many parties are at houses in NE Jackson as well as woodland hills one last year on my street in Meadowbrook highlands. Get a life people. You guys would never make it any other place.
9:22, lots of fake SEALs out there...just sayin'.
That said, I served with a few of those guys and they'll be the first to tell you that they're not superhuman, they can't be everywhere, they're not invisible, they can't fly, and they sure as hell are not bulletproof. So what's your point?
Y904, oh I don't know. Maybe the station a few blocks up Old Canton where I went for gas Sunday night around 10 before going home. Had eaten just down the street a few blocks a couple of hours earlier with my kids.
Don't know what boogeyman you see behind the shadows around your house every night but during my few decades of living here I haven't ever been afraid to get out and about in the neighborhood.
The male fragility coming from the burbs on this site is astounding. I bet y’all can’t be in the same room as another woman either, a la Robert Foster. Poor wittle boomers.
@ 2:54 AM
I agree with you. These people making comments are trolls. Seems several live in Jackson or fondren area in particular and just like to poke the hornets nest.
