Tulane is closing Madison campus

Tulane's Madison experiment is ending.  An email sent to students yesterday announced the Madison campus of Tulane University is closing.

The administration said the Madison campus did not fit into the university's strategic plan.  A new president took office five months ago and evaluated Tulane's operations and goals.

Belhaven University will handle the transition.  The last day of classes will be in May.  A press release is supposed to be issued Monday.

Tulane issued this press release back in 2009:

Tulane University plans to open its second satellite campus in the state of Mississippi in spring 2010, with first classes by its School of Continuing Studies starting next summer in the city of Madison, located north of Jackson, Miss.

The expansion came after discussions with eight-term Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler and city officials who wanted to attract a university to their growing planned community of nearly 30,000 people. The classes could draw from a population of 600,000 living within a half-hour"s drive.

Madison invited Tulane to consider a campus, says Rick Marksbury, dean of the School of Continuing Studies. “When I saw the city"s demographics and profile I was quite impressed,” he adds.

In June the Mississippi Commission on College Accreditation approved Tulane"s plan. Marksbury said the city of Madison plans to renovate a wing of a former elementary school building to house the university offices and classrooms.

Hawkins-Butler, the longest-serving female mayor in the nation, says the city sought out Tulane because of its “wonderful reputation.”

She first discussed the idea of a university campus in Madison with Steve Vassallo, who handles economic development for the city, but as Vassallo says, “She didn"t want just anyone. That led us to your doorstep.” He calls the Madison–Tulane venture “the most exciting project I"ve been involved with in 25 years of economic development.”

“Madison has very high standards and so does Tulane,” the mayor says. “You will see Madison embrace this great university. We will make great strides together in this new partnership.”

Tulane President Scott Cowen also is pleased with the expansion plan. “Madison has an accomplished mayor with a demonstrated commitment to education and community building. We look forward to expanding Tulane"s presence in Mississippi and working with the Madison community,” Cowen says.

Based on the results of a recent survey of Madison citizens, Marksbury is planning to offer courses in business, journalism and liberal arts.

“We have a three-year arrangement to see what it"s like, what the students" interests are and what the reception is,” the dean adds. “My goal is to hire a staff and have them in place in March or April and begin planning a summer school.”

This news gives a different meaning to "Go Greenies".

It was doomed from the beginning. A degree from Tulane Madison campus was laughable. There were few students. Holmes JC is right next door in Ridgeland with far more offerings and thousands of students. JC is just down the road and Ole Miss and MSU are only a couple of hours away. MSU has a campus in Meridian and it is successful.
I have no idea if the Madison JSU campus is still there.
Queen Mary fought the JSU Madison campus and I think we all know why.

It's a shame to see it go, but I often wondered what kind of business it was doing. I think there are too many options that are probably more reasonably priced and online options also have to be hurting satellite campuses.

I drive by it regularly and there are very few cars in the parking lot. Sorry to see it close.

The hard truth.
JSU wanted to put a campus in Madison to attract whites.
JSU is 99.9% black.
Someone could file a race discrimination lawsuit with the Federal EEOC.

As I understand it, JSU is doing just fine in Madison. I believe they offer courses in Business, Crimnal Justice, Education among others. I hadn't heard about the courses in Public Policy or Government... ..It's a shame to attack one's success over another's failure.

12:47....Why won't you admit that the only reason a white person enrolls in classes at JSU is to meet some sort of job or application requirement. Nobody goes there for an education. Period. If the place you work requires a masters for a promotional opportunity, and you can get it at JSU, you go for it. It will be a breeze and will meet the requirement for you to submit an application.

Tulane never got real serious about an educational nexus in Madison, MS. Mary got that deal cut simply as another peacock plume in her feathered chapeau.

The venue is an excellent drop point for the annual 'paint can and tire' day.

Maybe a decent, competitive grocery store will locate there. Or, hey, another donut shop.

Hey 12:47,around here JSU holds no credibility. Just look at their recent fiasco with their coaching staff and their president. They can't keep either one while no one has explained where the $34 million was misspent. Now, you might socialize in a different type of circle of people than I do, but I would rather pick up cans on the side of the road than have a diploma from JSU. 11:57 did make a valid point. Look around your local municipal offices and see what college tag they sport on their cars. Just tellin the truth. Hinds has maybe 10% white employees.

According to the CL story, it looks like Tulane and Belhaven have a deal where current students can finish at Belhaven and receive a Tulane degree as well as a Belhaven degree. Belhaven has been pretty successful in serving that kind of market - I think they have a campus in Memphis if I'm not mistaken.

I hope this means that Tulane is backing-off from the dumbing-down that's been happening at that institution, in recent decades. I spent a grotesque amount of money going there (the main - real - campus...), and was not pleased by the kind of people University College was bringing onto campus(University College is/was basically, Tulane's junior college option, and the precursor to satellite campuses like Madison's). University College people weren't as bad as the athletes (who were frequently violent criminals, with IQs in the simian range) - but almost. You don't pay Tulane-level money, and work as hard as one has to, at such a university, to have Yatty types from Slidell and Westwego coming onto campus. They diluted the 'Near-Ivy' experience.

I, and many others who suffered and sacrificed to go to Tulane (my cousins, who went to cheap Southern Football Joke Schools, were going to Europe, buying condos for their school years, joining frats/sororities, having $$$$ weddings, buying boats, buying planes, having babies - while I was living in a hole, writing enormous tuition checks, and studying myself to the brink of oblivion) resent the dumbing-down/cheapening of the brand. We paid dearly for that brand. Is Tulane, maybe, realizing that we're very unhappy about the sleazy satellite campuses?

I want my Tulane degree to mean that I can hold my own among New York Jews (which I CAN and DO do - possibly the most valuable thing about a Tulane education). I DON'T want 'Tulane' to mean "...or maybe some loser who took classes in Biloxi or Terrytown, or in a makeshift former high school in Mississippi".

I believe that Tulane wormed its way into Madison, with promises or hints, that it would (somehow...) eventually become a genuine university, rather than the educational equivalent of a Holiday Inn Express, or a Wendy's drive-thru: somewhat deluxe, but not really anything special.

And it did not help, that the first Madison 'Dean' was a creature who instantly antagonized the townspeople - someone who seems to have masked her ignorance with arrogance, who apparently saw herself as leaving cultured Biloxi, to go among the unwashed and ignorant savages of the Central Mississippi hinterlands. She didn't last very long, but did stay long enough to thwart the City's efforts to upgrade the building to posh Madison standards. 'L'un-dit' around town, is that there were some pretty spectacular proposals for the building's renovation, which would have enhanced the value of the brand, and justified the high tuition. But the initial 'Dean' didn't like them, and so the current crumb cake make-do re-do is what's there. Madison likes to push the boundaries of the envelope, but she didn't want those country bumpkins messing with an envelope coming from the city sophisticates in fabulous Terrytown, or LaPlace, or Edgewater Mall, or wherever it is she was from.

We got some of the fliers Tulane sent out to Madisonites. They seemed to target affluent retirees with time on their hands. Maybe there aren't enough of those, here. Or, maybe, such people can come up with better uses for their time and money.

All universities in this area are laughable all are offering online degrees focusing on volume instead of academic work. Ole miss,USM, MSU and JSU are doing the same thing, degrees are becoming easy to get as institutions go with more adjunct faculty. Why pay a tenured professor when you can have a contract teacher? The days of a degree meaning anything are coming to an end in focus of the almighty dollar. More students, more revenue, even Yale and Harvard are bowing to this aspect. Get used to it.

Universities opening new campuses all over are just whores trying to pull in more federal loan money. That's it. It's not as if you would be learning under real Tulane PhD's. You study under local hacks that make $1,500 per class.

I am not an expert on this situation, nor am I 100% familiar with the JSU Madison Campus, but I DO know that JSU has some great degree programs and has some amazing faculty and staff. I am a white teacher at a black school (I am not a liberal yuppie from up north- I grew up here) and several of my co workers who are amazing teachers are JSU alums. Our valedictorian last year who made a 31 on the ACT is at JSU majoring in Accounting. The MADD Drama group is quite amazing and you all also forget that JSU has an amazing amount of international students, and the % of white students is way above .01. Learn the facts before you spew foolishness based on ignorance.

Tulane would not be hiring Tulane PhDs, unless it wants intellectual in-breeding to develop. Good gosh, the blind lead the blind around here. Tulane's main campus also hires adjuncts from people with terminal degrees and masters degrees, as does every college and university in the United States.

Ass backwards racists who find every fault with JSU and deem it's degrees worthless generally declare anything people of color do as inferior in an effort to bolster their own sorry asses. Somewhere in this vast nation there are people who think that only toothless hicks live in Madison, Mississippi and ANY educational institution there must be a joke. However, people with solid educational attainment do not find it necessary to minimize other educational institution's degrees. (except maybe for football) They realize that there are brilliant students matriculating at JSU as well as bad ones, just like at Tulane. A Harvard A-hole might tell you that Princeton degrees are worthless. There are hicks in New York just like in Madison. Only a stupid hick doesn't know that. You should support every educational institution in Mississippi. It's the only chance we've got!

JSU is a very solid school, one of the most respected public HBCUs in America. Much better than the Gramblings and Alabama A&Ms of the world.

Your valedictorian only made a 31 on the ACT? Woeful.

There wasn't a single full-time faculty person from Tulane who taught at the Madison 'campus.' Every single instructor was a contract teacher (making about $1500 a class--before taxes) who was also likely contract teaching at one or more other college/university in the metro area.

In fact, in the USA more higher education credit hours are now being taught by contract instructors than full-time faculty.

What does this mean to you? Don't fall for the TV ad about getting an online master's or doctorate. You too could join the ranks of the teachers making $24,000 a year! (before taxes.)

Not really. Tulane would have been a valued part of the City Center mix. Tulane's presence was regarded as an ENHANCEMENT, rather than a hindrance.

Madison needs places for kids to play. Make the area a showplace for youth sports, if only soccer and youth softball, etc. And include areas for enjoyment by kids with disabilities. Madison does not need more spires, arches and columns and certainly not satellite college experiments.

Sure it's prime real estate. But our kids are prime considerations when it comes to a decision to live here.

Futhermore, coaching, president and money issues are problems at many institutions. That doesn’t change the quality of our education or our programs.

Whoever keeps making the "$1,500 per class" statement is misinformed. The pay is not that low, although it varies according to whether a degree is terminal or not and whether the class was undergraduate or graduate level. Many, if not most, who have taught at the campus had or have full-time jobs, and most were experienced with college instruction, regardless. This may or may not be true at a traditional campus, where students are more than likely to not get the big-shot professor but a TA or team of TAs who come in after brief visits from the big-shot.

Anonymous said...

Hey 8:39.....people moving two miles down the road to get away from black people is not "economic development". Its useless and redundant and waste of tax payer resources. The pie in the metro area has not grown in 30 years.

$1500 per class is about right for community college adjuncts. My ex-wife taught a class for a few years. Don't know if the 4-year colleges pay any more.

Anonymous said...

I'll have to go back and look but I was paid well over $2900 to teach a class. Sorry to see them go. I am a working professional in my discipline with 20 years experience working in the field. I am not sure a PHD who has been teaching their whole life would have the kind of field knowledge I have and passed on to my students. In some instances adjuncts can bring more to the table than someone who has been teaching their whole life.

Remembers the day former Gov. Waller suddenly declared all the former HBC's universities instead. said...

Just curious how many commenting about JSU in this thread have been on (or even anywhere near) the Jackson campus lately? I confess it's been 3+ years for me when I was still working downtown (still wish I were there) and The Penguin was still open, but I was AMAZED at how many white students were walking around on the campus, not to mention Far East Asians, Indians/Pakistanis, Middle Easterners (for lack of a better and inclusive term), etc. From what little I've looked into it, the academic standards there (and all other MS HBCUs) have been raised dramatically from the entirely different standards (vs. Old Miss, MSU, etc.) of the past. And as someone who knows many who have taught in the adult degree program at Belhaven, I dare say JSU offers a MUCH better education.

Anonymous said...

When you guys are saying "$1500 per class", are you meaning PER SEMESTER? Assuming you teach during summers, and teach four classes per semester, isn't that around $18,000 per YEAR? $24,000, if you get full pay for TWO summer semesters? That's truly pitiful, if it's true. That's roughly what people make, mowing lawns and raking leaves.

Ghost of Jake Ayers.. said...

Bullshit, 2:53. You have no idea where any of those students were from JSU has gone to extreme ends to NOT recruit and enroll white Americans. You might have seen some Eurasians and a few Russians walking around pointing at pine cones and day lillies. You're a total joke to suggest a diverse, competitive campus. But you already knew that.

PS: You failed to mention the fact that 15 on the ACT qualifies one for admission to the Frosh Class!

Anonymous said...

6:15 The only schools that have a history of going to extreme ends not to enroll students of another race in this state are Ole Miss, Miss State, USM, Delta State, etc. Find one instance, ONE where JSU has turned away a student because of his/her race. As usual all the "integrating" that was done at the previously named schools was done by black students, not whites. That is history and that is the present. In fact over thirty years ago the majority of JSU faculty was non-African American. That's a number the school can control, but they can't force students to enroll. Check it out! Accuse them of anything else, but shut your lying mouth when you say they have not busted their asses to get whites on that campus. What they have not done, that some other HBCU's have, is give "white scholarships" just to increase white enrollment.

And don't talk about what gets you into the freshman class at Ole Miss. A 10 on the ACT and a 4.3 in the forty yard dash.

Look At That Angry Dude! said...

9:26 obviously has not set foot on any of the schools he mentions. At least not in the past 15 years. All of them are far more diverse than JSU will EVER be. In fact walk anywhere on the USM campus on game day and you'll think you're at Alcorn. Same with MSU campus.

There's quite a difference in 'turning down a student applicant' and 'recruiting' one. Ayers required that recruitment AND enrollment of non-blacks be addressed. The court later sanctioned JSU for trying to side step that by 'recruiting' non black kids from other countries. The only reason Ayers is off JSU's back now is because some whites are taking advantage of chump degrees, mostly at the masters level. And if JSU is handing out scholarships to whites, that's nothing more than reverse Affirmative Action. So, you get a taste of it.

Read 9:26's post carefully and look at the anger-signals. He knows he's being untruthful and exaggerating and distorting reality. And he's angry. Real angry. He's reminiscent of the white guy thirty five years ago who found out two black families were moving into his neighborhood. He's really pissed about it and takes it personally but then claims his neighborhood is friendly and diverse. He has shit his pants with the truth.

Anonymous said...

Again, adjunct pay is not high, but no one around here pays $1,500 a semester before taxes. No Community College, to my understanding, pays over $1,700 a class. That's as low as it gets, though. In Jackson, the better-funded four-year colleges pay $3,000 over just over per class for terminal degree recipients, a bit less for online classes. (This should change.) Tulane's Madison branch was paying well over that for graduate courses, around $4,000 per class.

Anonymous said...

For your information 10:29 I have not only set foot on the MSU and JSU campuses in the past 5 years, I have had a child graduate from one and a grandchild child attending the other. I know about the lack of diversity on HBCU campuses. I have no doubt that HBCU's do not have significant non-white enrollments. I also have no doubt that you couldn't give a rat's ass about diversity.

Historically most institutions run by black people have difficulty attracting white participants, whether they are educational or otherwise. HBCU's have always, always had an open door policy for anyone. Always. The perception of inferiority, duplication of curriculum, underfunding,or reluctance to choose an environment full of black people, keep most whites from choosing an HBCU. It does not mean the HBCU has not tried to recruit white students. HBCU's often found it easier to attract students from foreign countries than from their home states because the foreign students didn't have to battle racial stigmas and peer pressure many local whites associate with attending a black institution. (Stigmas: See reference to "chump degrees") JSU hired a minority recruitment officer shifted and modified programs, opened satellite campuses(whites seem more comfortable away from the main campus) and provided financial incentives, but they cannot force students to do what they don't want to do. Unlike several HBCU's, JSU chose not to "recruit" white students by awarding them scholarships for minimal achievement and being white. This desperate move was employed at some HBCU's exasperated by their inability to recruit a significant number of white students. I'm sure you applaud JSU for not giving in to "reverse Affirmative Action".

My anger is with perfect people who can only criticize the apparent shortcomings of others and refuse to consider the other man's struggle to get to this point. You must be perfect.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
