Shooting at Panera

There was a shooting this morning at Panera Bread at Renaissance.  The shooter is in custody.  Both the shooter and victim were employees.  The victim suffered a non-life threatened wound.  Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal said the scene is under control.  More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Update: Shooting was in parking lot.   Victim is in critical condition.  WLBT posted this picture of the suspect:

No way. I don't think guns are allowed at Panera.

Ridgeland is lost!

(Just wanted to be the first to get that in)

Obviously they need to put up metal detectors for their employees to go through when they enter.

If you've been to that Panera it's not surprising. They need to do better at screening out thug employees.

All those Morgan and Morgan commercials end with the (inserted) "Office in Jackson".

These Madison and Ridgeland and Flowood crimes need to come with a similar 'ending'.

"Residence in Jackson"...

I agree with 1230. They need to tighten their employee screens. Not sure what their rent is but you pay a small fortune for a small serving size. Cutting cost everywhere they can.

Madison County Thugs this would never happen in Jackson.

Proof that even Jackson residents don't stay in the city limits to do their shopping and dining.

This Jacksonian must not be aware that Jackson has Parlor Market. He could shoot people at the capital city's much superior dining options, rather than co-mingle with the dirt clods who eat at Mama Hamil's and/or Panera.

First of all, the shooting was in the parking lot so no weapon was inside the store. Second of all it was over a woman which can't be predicted or controlled.

Was this Mr. I got a Bentley Skybox Daiquiri dude, using that gun he pointed at the camera on Facebook?

Pitiful. All of you. You'd sing a different tune if you were near a situation like this, and it can happen ANYWHERE! Even in your fox hole. Thank God it was handled and nobody else was hurt.

The off duty officer that took him down exercised more restraint than this cc permit holder would have. Too bad I wasn't getting a $15 burger at 5 Guys today...

Seems that Panera could have checked out this kid's Facebook page and determined quickly to not offer employment.

Disgusting how the statement to the Clarion Ledger portrays this picture perfect system of how the Renassaince handled this regarding their merchants. It couldn't have been handled more poorly. We found out from customers coming in that something was going on. We still have yet to hear from Renassaince management or security.

I'm an employer and I check social media, Been Verified and call references the applicant leaves on the paperwork. You'd be surprised how easy it is to disqualify an applicant by doing a little homework. In just a few minutes you can save yourself a lot of wasted training, theft, poor customer service, fights and heartache.

Unfortunately, this can happen anywhere. But having tighter Security could deter this from happening..Looks like their going to have to beeef up with actual LEO's.

They can afford it, if they want to continue the folks with big feet to keep coming back.

Is there an eatery anywhere that drug screens or does criminal background checks? Seriously...I've never heard of any food service establishment doing pre-employment or randoms. That's the primary reason wait-staff wind up where they do.....we have a new term here.....'Sanctuary Employment'. If any of them did it you'd see 'Help Wanted - We're Hiring' in every window in town.

St. Andrews School, directly across Highland Colony Pkwy from Panera, went under lockdown, per the advice of the Ridgeland PD, just prior to a 11:24 email that was sent to parents.

This would never happen in Gluckstadt. It's a crime free zone.. Panera is too close to The Bold New City ( which has to be the most asinine nickname since Ole Miss became the Black Bears) and is, therefore, in a combat zone. Seems pretty simple to me.

Hey 5:54, this is 4:25. I think you misunderstood my comment. I actually live in downtown Jackson and have for years, but I do regularly eat at both Five Guys locations. My little bacon cheeseburger, little fry, and regular drink ring up pretty close to $15 after tax, and I'll gladly keep paying it. It's a damn good product. As for my "cc toting a$$", had I been in the immediate area, I would not have hesitated in the least to shoot that guy, if the situation had warranted it. 2 criteria - (1) he was a threat to me and/or others and (2) my engaging him with my own weapon (S&W MP40 Shield) wouldn't further endanger anyone else around. So, what was your point 5:54?

Here we go again.
Crime in MS has been and continues to be primarily limited to black on black in poor areas or else domestic related violence except for corruption and racial crimes. We win on those.
There are things our State legislature could do that have been successful elsewhere but they'd rather spend money on meat packing plants and awarding contracts to their deep pocket campaign contributors.
That's also why the laws on mental illness aren't rational when there is zero problem in legally protecting the rights of the mentally ill without putting society at risk. Too many of their " true believers" are bat shit crazy and the rich one's families would get an evaluation in a heart beat if they could! You might want to see who lobbies against involuntary commitment and ask yourselves " why"?
If you want to stop crime, you might ought to learn something about criminology , human behavior and what does and doesn't work rather than just bitch.
If you plan to move, move to either to someplace isolated or to an area with no poverty anywhere close . In a big city, this wouldn't make the news. They have real crimes done by professional, smart criminals and well organized crime.

Anonymous said...

Oh to be so ignorant that I actually believed that a little sign saying "Madison" or "Rankin" County would actually stop a thug from shooting someone....

Anonymous said...

You might want to see who lobbies against involuntary commitment and ask yourselves " why"?

Who? Put up.

People Like That Are Part of The Problem.. said...

7:59, instead of remaining twisted around the axle of criminology and mental health, you might want to do some research and study into such subjects as 'marriage and family relations', 'parenting', 'the absence of personal responsibility and accountability' and 'the development of role models and personal goals'.

What 'does or doesn't work' is totally meaningless as long as people like you refuse to discover and admit to the underlying causation for aberrant behaviors.

@ 5:54 Five Guys is a bandwagon restaurant much like Panera. The burgers are forgettable and the fries are terrible. Go to Cool Al's or Rooster's.

@ 11:55 If you're proud of screening out people from Jackson in your hiring, let everyone know who you are and the name of your business.

What a titty-baby comment. What did you expect and why would anybody call to check on you?

When you pay 5 figures a month to lease a small spot in this mall, it is not absurd to expect for mall management or security to come let you know why 13 rounds from a gun just went off in the parking lot. It wasn't like it was it was a minor altercation. Sorry if you don't understand that.

Anonymous said...

People can learn to expect and enjoy such as this or they can get law enforcement that really does want to stop crime. Putting blindfolds on law enforcement will not work. Just look at the results so far.

Anonymous said...

Titty Baby @ 1:50. Don't expect somebody to come around and make you feel good, no matter what your damned rent is. If there had been general chaos, the release of poisonous gas all over the thirty acres or a mudslide wiping out half the stores, you might expect somebody to drop by and make sure you were safe or to tell your employees which exit to use. Otherwise, suck it up Buttercup.

Anonymous said...

There was a domestic altercation that ended in one guy shooting someone else. He got shot. After shooter was shot, why the hell would you expect the shopping center to be "put on lockdown" , except of course, you've seen that done on some TV series. The problem was solved. The shooter was down and arrested. If you were in Renaissance what did you want to be done - kept in the store where you were maxing out your debit card, while the Ridgeland PoPo interviewed everyone in the shopping center, including the ButlerSnow bunch as well as CSpire? There was one shooter and they got the guy. You could continue with your spending, eating, or drinking spree without interruption.

Anonymous said...

Some people are just batshit crazy. The shooting happened in the parking lot. The dude went to his car and got gun. That's why everything happened in parking lot. Panera did not allow employee on site with gun. Dude will regret his dumb ass move in Ridgeland! He would have gotten away with it in Jackson! Ridgeland MS nor Panera Bread are to be messed with! Both will take necessary measures. Upstanding city and business! Thankfully no one was fatally injured! This MOFO will regret his actions!

8:45 am Those who benefit from the existing system of revolving door medical treatment of the mentally ill and have made enough money taking advantage of the mentally ill such as The " Church" of Scientology to hire lobbyists.
9:24 am I suggest you keep up with advances in science. If you still think it's nature vs nurture and are weighing nurture that heavily, you are missing the advances in neuroscience and genome studies , you are missing advances in research on the impact of socio-economic and cultural influences in society. You certainly missed all the research about the impact of peer groups during adolescence and advances in understanding certain mental illness like bi-polar disorders and schizophrenia. And, you missed that criminologists are taking " parenting" and " marriage and the family" into consideration in their attempt to better understand and predict crime.
If you are looking at families in isolation and not looking at their family histories including medical histories, you are one of the ones who are oversimplifying every issue into an " either or choice" and failing to appreciate the complexities of our species.
I would also respectfully suggest to you that some" experts" who write books sometimes have biases and sometimes do not take advantage of knowledge in disciplines other than their own. Nor do they keep up with advances since they graduated divinity school or business school or any other school. In becoming a more specialized society, communication between the disciplines and specialties are not as good as they need to be. The amount of misinformation and poor research modeling today is stunning. What you read or hear is only as good as the source and you need to know if your source has biases and agendas and did sound, conclusive research or is just theorizing.
We are cursed with those who never entertain the fact that they can't know what they don't know and you never get to stop doing your homework if you are going to be up to date.
I do know with certainty that it isn't just one race or religion that kills others members of their species and breaks the laws of their society ( commits crimes) never has been. It's more complex than that.

You are attempting to comment outside of your capacity. That oxymoronic statement is simply an attempt at trying too hard to be condescending.

I have never entertained the stupidity that I "can't know what (I) don't know". That is the entire point to educating oneself, to which you allude in the conjunctive portion to your oxymoronic ignorance.

First off I'm an old Panera employee at this location, do not blame management nor say our employees are trashy based off assumptions. One loose person out of a whole staff. I loved working here because it felt like a family most of the time, the customers were the worst part. They acted as if they were entitled to everything. Some customers were very nice although I must say. I will not judge everyone and be one of the same people who are judging us employees.

I work there too. Check your email. You probably only read the part about closing early for weather. Was also on their Facebook and Instagram. It was one guy after one guy, not active shooter. Center WAS on lockdown. He was captured within minutes. We appreciated the way it was handled.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
