Bill Crawford: Trump tweets unnerve Lott

“He is very capable of doing a switcheroo really quick, which can be a good thing or it can not be.” This was former Senate Majority Leader and Mississippi Senator Trent Lott talking about president-elect Donald Trump.
Switcheroos, as Lott calls them, are becoming a hallmark of Trump’s transition to the presidency. He says one thing one day, then changes it the next. His team says one thing, then he says another.

In its story quoting Lott, Politico.com found itself unable to decide if the “mixed messages and shifting realities of Trump world” are a “byproduct of Trump’s unconventional approach to communications or a more systemic dysfunction.”

The online news source said, “Trump allies and Republicans eager to work with him and capitalize on the remarkable governing opportunity he has delivered them have themselves been stymied from time to time by the president-elect’s mixed messages and consistent inconsistencies. They, too, aren’t sure about which Trump tweets or conversations to take literally — or even seriously.”

Lott is one of those.

“A lot of our allies are very nervous about whether they can count on us,” he said.

Lott told Politico that Trump’s incessant tweets unnerve him.

“The tweets unnerve me. I see how you can use that to go around and over the traditional media and how many people get his tweets. But it unnerves me because I’m kind of old school.”

One thing Trump is not is old school. He is unconventional, intends to remain unconventional, and will do unconventional things as President to deliberately “unnerve” his opposition of the moment and keep them off balance.

“President-elect Donald Trump won’t end the onslaught of posts on Twitter that fed his unconventional campaign, even after taking on the formalized duties of the Oval Office later this month,” says a story on Bloomberg.com.

“You know what?” said incoming White House press secretary Sean Spicer. “The fact of the matter is that when he tweets, he gets results.”

Spicer said Trump’s use of Twitter plus Facebook and Instagram will “absolutely” continue.

Of course, this is another switcheroo. On CBS’s “60 Minutes” in November he said he was rethinking his use of social media. “I’m going to be very restrained, if I use it at all, I’m going to be very restrained,” he said.

Unconventional and unrestrained, such a President will unnerve millions more than Trent Lott.

His tweet in December that, “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability,” prompted fear across the globe of a new nuclear arms race.

His tweets to General Motors and Toyota threatening punitive taxes if they locate manufacturing in Mexico have unsettled global corporate leaders.

But perhaps the most unnerving aspect of all was Spicer’s admission that no-one knows what Trump is going to tweet until after it hits. “He drives the train on this,” Spicer told the Wall Street Journal.

Sorry Trent. Old school is out. Switcheroo is in. The Donald is going to keep us all on the edge of our seats.

The honorable " former senator" always looking out for our best interest.

Lott is no more than a typical political hack on the lobby gravy train----I SINCERELY hope he REMAINS confused and "bamboozled"-- we haven't been able to tell the difference between Republican and Democrat shysters for YEARS!!!

Tweeting is no different than any other type of modern communication. It is the message that should matter. Would smoke signals be old fashion enough for Ole cheerleading Trent Lott or would it just have been easier to have Hillary Clinton as president with her private homebrew server sending out emails to all and hacked by many? His brother-in-law,Dickie Scruggs, sure thinks so based on his Facebook posts which really unnerve me.

I think the tweets are a very good idea. Sort of opens up all of the secrets that politicians want to keep from the people. Maybe if Trump continues with the tweets it will slow down some of the behind the scene deals politicians like to make.

Get things out in the open. Let the people know what is going on.

Is Trump a Russian Agent? He sure seems to looking out for their best interest. Most of us sense that something is not right. It's encouraging that Senators like McCain and Graham are going to lead investigations into Russian hacking. They need to also investigate his business dealings with them and other goverments.

Looks like the Kingsnake is getting supicious of the Egg Eater in chicken coop.

Let the tweets "unnerve" then establishment. Good Lord. They need to be shaken up. How long has Trent been part of the establishment? It's about time he felt the winds of change blowing upon his face.....

McCain and Graham - rock solid conservatives with no ego to stroke at all. Honest.

Trump's presidency will be a wild ride, but if you have already come to the conclusion that the country is in the toilet anyway, it might be fun. Trump's going to have fun. So should you. Get a 4 year supply of something 80 or 100 proof and enjoy the ride!

Trent WHO?.. said...

Lott was both incompetent and untrustworthy at least three years prior to his forced retirement. Regardless of whether Trump is credible, Lott has been irrelevant for at least two decades. He is nothing more than a male version of Pelosi, grasping at whatever he thinks might make him noteworthy. Give it up, Trenton. It's a lost cause. Your ship has sailed and your barn has burned.

The hacking was a good thing, no matter who did it. Every country that has a computer has been trying and succeeding in hacking. The only difference this time is they let people know what was really happening behind our backs. Everyone, even Obama, knew the hacking was going on. They were not worried about it as long as they thought they could keep all of their crooked dealings under cover.
The hackings were never a problem. Releasing the information to the public was a big problem. How else would the people learn what the DNC did? How else would the people have learned Hillary got the debate questions in advance? How else would the people have learned most of the media was working with Hillary?
No, hacking was not a problem. Secrets being released to the public was a problem. People learning how crooked some of the politicians are was a problem.

Would people rather Trump did like Hillary and the DNC did? The people decided they would like a more honest person as president.

I am with 3:31. And as far as "driving the train" I believe that is what he was elected to do. Really tired of predictable politicians who have taken for so long that they cannot imagine the gravy train getting leaner.

Who gives a F__k what Trent Lott says ???????

He never had any balls and wasn't anything but a fence sitter.

How did he get out of the mess with Dickie, why did he not do time.

Observations:

(1) An 11 year old geek kid could have hacked Hillary's email as sloppy as she was. I am sure the Chinese and everyone else out there were monitoring her also.

(2) No one is claiming the Russians altered or forged the crooked shit they exposed on Hillary. As a matter of fact, the FBI admitted they found no fabricated info.

(3) The Rooskies did us a favor - they exposed Hillary's evil while OUR mainstream media was busy trying to cover it up. What a freakin' irony!!!

(4) Good ole Uncle Sam has been manipulating other country's elections for the last 100 years - and we are mad because the Russians exposed the truth about the Queen of Evil??

He can run his mouth all he wants but until he puts pen to paper....it's just noise.

He runs the risk of being ignored.

Wow that didn't take long, most of the Trumpetees are hiding in the closet. They know they can't defend him.

The report on Russia hacking is available to the public. I suggest some of you bother to read it.
Most of you seem to believe the "hack" was limited to the DNC. It was not. Misinformation, disinformation , propaganda and alterations were the larger part of this hack . Russia has used the same hacking tactics efforts to attempt to weaken all democracies, particularly in their former countries.
That should concern all of us.
It's was clear from the comments during this election and the re-posts on social media that more than a few of you believed the propaganda you were fed by Russia.

Nobody in that office could flap their gums as much as the Kenyan has for eight years.

Anonymous said...

Everybody new he would attack Streep this morning and she never mentioned his name. China, North Korea, Iran and everybody else have figured out how easy it's going to be to manipulate President Elect Trump. What will McConnell and Ryan do to save face is anybodies guess. Trump will not resign so they may have to impeach him.

Anonymous said...

Trump knows how bad the stink of Kenya hurt Obama ....

Trump knows he is now an installed leader...so he has to scream "no!"

If he were a "leader" and wanted to unite people he could use this to coalesce around being against Putin and be popular.....

The fact that he won't be adverse to Putin lends credibility to the idea that Eastern Europe loaned him money when American banks would not....so he is going to pay them back...with our country

Anonymous said...

6:50 am Are you suggesting Trump should " flap his gums" even more than Obama?
Is your argument " The bad guys did it so we can do it too and be worse than they were? "

I also have wonder how having a good vocabulary and success or expertise became pomposity or arrogance. And, how it is that conservatives are entitled to express an opinion as crudely and they like if they are blue collar, but expressing an opinion is not ok for Hollywood or media celebrities unless they are conservative?

I thought language was all about clearly communicating . I know Meryl Street's point of view and Trent Lott's whether I agree with them or like them or not. I can form an opinion on whether or not I think they are accurate and know their point of view. I can feel more comfortable deciding whether or not they are trustworthy enough to have my respect.
But, I've no clue what Trump really believes or intends. I know only that he doesn't tolerate criticism , engages ( by his own admission in his book) in hyperbole if not out right lies and excessively goes after anyone who disagrees with him.
I know for certain that don't like or respect anyone who puts their self-interest or ego ahead of that of our Nation. I know for certain that ONE man can't fix all our problems. And, I know for certain that Putin cares only about making Russia great again and his personal power and will do anything to make that happen including invading other countries.

The full declassified intelligence report on Russian hacking is available on Mother Jones.
Please read it. It's only 25 pages.
Do not rely on those with biases to describe it to you.

I read an article this week that made a good point. Calling this "hacking" is missing the point- it was warfare. Whether your glad you know what was in the emails, or not (whether you believe none were tampered with, or not) is beside the point. Putin was just able to show that he can manipulate an election- that should scare the *&(^ out of all of us. But, instead we are going to stand by and act like he did us a favor without contemplating what his next move will be.

Lott must be having a tough time getting promises for big checks from the government. Drain the Swamp Trump.

Anonymous said...

What do you f'ing idiots think Putin is going to do? Invade us? ROFLMAO

Anonymous said...

Hillary was not going to win the election even if no one showed the proof of how crooked she was. If people would take notice she only won her parties nomination by crooked means and it was close. Even many of the democrats didn't want her.

As far as Lott, I bet he wasn't unnerved as much as he was when Dickie was going to jail. He should have been right there with him.

When are you going to figure out that this is not about President Obama or Sec. Clinton. If the tables were turned and this was Putin it would simply be called treason in Russia. All The President Elect has to do is admit that their was interference and deal with it as every other president would have.

Isn't Crawford one of Barbour's minions? Barbour never wanted Trump. He wanted another Bush. The other Bush's took good care of Barbour financially.

If you are not deeply concerned about the fact that we now have a man in the White House who takes every criticism personally and responds with acid and venom sometimes without any consideration or concern about the consequences, you are a sad excuse for a "citizen". We should all hope (and pray) that this man will understand that the United States is not a personal plaything and that from now on the stakes are not loosing a few million dollars on a "deal that went sour" but could be the loss of a few million lives. No president including St. Reagan was so encouraged by simple minded supporters to "shoot from the hip" and no President has been so willing to do so without deliberation or concern. After all, in Trump's world you can always change your mind, sell out, fire everybody, or if necessary declare bankruptcy and everything just starts over. He campaigned
as a maverick loose canon who is so out of control that he cannot be controlled by anyone. Perhaps even himself. That appealed to voters who are sick and tired of the status quo. But now Clinton is defeated, Obama is out and he runs the government. Let's pray the Donald realizes it by next week.

The only person that came out on top was Lott. I have zero respect for him and Thad. It's the same old boys playing the same old games that come out on top.

I'm not a fan of Trump but I voted for him only because he said he was going to drain the swamp. I can't wait to see Thad go sliding by along with all the other swamp rats.

Conway said this morning that the President Elect should be judged by what's in his heart not what comes out of his mouth. It has been my life experience that what usually comes out of your mouth is what's in your heart. That's how people are wired.

Time to start getting use to it. Trump is our president. The people made a choice. You can cry, piss, and moan but there isn't anything you can do about it for another 4 years. Even then you will have to do a much better job of choosing a candidate than you did this time. You can learn from your mistakes or you can make many more of them. Personally, I don't give a damn.

Hillary is not going to be elected dog catcher. Any help sent her way was a waste. People should have know that anyway.

Just because a thug gets a pardon does not change how much of a low life they were.

It's laughable that folks are still talking about President Obama and Sec. Clinton, I guess that's to deflect away from the fact that IF a wall is going to be built we are going to pay for it. (no Mexico will not) And now we ain't repealing Obamacare until they have a replacement. So I'm guessing that they are going to repackage Obamacare and call it Paulcare.

The federal week in review:
1. Trump fires all Ambassadors and Special Envoys, ordering them out by inauguration day.

2. House brings back the Holman rule allowing them to reduce an individual civil service, SES positions, or political appointee's salary to $1, effectively firing them by amendment to any piece of legislation. We now know why they wanted names and positions of people in Energy and State.

3. Senate schedules 6 simultaneous hearings on cabinet nominees and triple-books those hearings with Trump's first press conference in months and an ACA budget vote, effectively preventing any concentrated coverage or protest.

4. House GOP expressly forbids the Congressional Budget Office from reporting or tracking ANY costs related to the repeal of the ACA.

5. Trump continues to throw the intelligence community under the bus to protect Putin, despite the growing mountain of evidence that the Russians deliberately interfered in our election.

6. Trump breaks a central campaign promise to make Mexico pay for the wall by asking Congress (in other words, us, the taxpayers) to pay for it.

7. Trump threatens Toyota over a new plant that was never coming to the US nor will take jobs out of the US.

8. House passes the REINS act, giving them veto power over any rules enacted by any federal agency or department--for example, FDA or EPA bans a drug or pesticide, Congress can overrule based on lobbyists not science. Don't like that endangered species designation, Congress kills it.

9. Trump names son-in-law to White House advisor position.

10. Gets on Twitter at 3am to berate Meryl Streep and lie about mocking a disabled reporter when he's on video mocking a disabled reporter.

Remember in 6 months that you supported this.

7:38, you can see why people voted for Trump. More work done before he is even sworn in than Obama did in 8 years. Way to go Trump. Show these doubters what a real president can and will do when he isn't always on vacation.

Anonymous said...

Yeah and now we learn that his campaign was in contact with Russian operatives, no wonder he continues to dismiss the hacking. Pence will be sworn in before the end of the year. He will resign once he sees the impeachment sign on the wall.
He has already committed Treason, what more do you guys need.

Anonymous said...

7:27, you seem to read only one source of information.
Don't you think it is strange that Obama knew of the hacking long before the election. For some reason he didn't seem to worried about it.
Isn't it strange the only time the democrats became concerned was when Hillary lost the election?
Do you see the irony of the democrats complaining about the hacking when what was published was the words straight from the democrats?
Noticed how the democrats want the hackers punished but now complain the hackers did not publish what the democrats wanted them to release?
Notice how the democrats want to forget how Hillary was given the debate questions in advance but want the Russians to release information about Trump?

You can cry, piss, and moan but you will have to agree that this president does have a birth certificate and is a citizen. That is a big improvement over the last one.

Anonymous said...

Are you listening to his press conference, Putin and the Russians are already blackmailin him. How can you not see this?
I said long ago that you guys will go blind,I just never taught it was happen so fast.

10:36, it is very hard to understand why democrats would elect Hillary as their choice for president then complain about anything crooked.
It was their own emails talking about their own criminal actions that got the DNC and Hillary in trouble.
Hillary for dog catcher.

Our intelligence agencies have been going down hill for many years. Most of the heads of the agencies are political hacks. They have been kissing Obama's ass for 8 years. Right now they are beginning to understand that Obama is not going to be there in a couple of weeks. You will be seeing a change happen soon.
When it comes down to being kicked off the gravy train all of a sudden they will see things differently.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
