OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING WITH SUICIDAL SUBJECT
On Thursday, November 24, 2016 at approximately 5:18 PM officers of the Madison Police Department responded to a report of a suicidal subject at a residence on South Place Drive in Madison. Upon the officers’ arrival they learned that a female subject inside the residence had fired a shotgun at another occupant of the residence. The person fired upon was not injured. Officers were able to clear the residence and determine that the female subject had barricaded herself in a bathroom. The Special Response Team was called and upon their arrival they attempted to make contact with the female in the bathroom. Believing that the subject was about to harm herself the officers breached the bathroom door with a shield. As they entered the bathroom the female subject fired the shotgun towards the officers. As officers took cover one officer returned fire with his side-arm weapon striking the subject in her left arm, right arm, and breast. The shotgun was secured at which time officers rendered first aid to the subject. Madison Fire Department and Pafford Paramedics arrived at the residence and administered aid to the subject. She was transported to the University of MS Medical Center where she is listed in stable condition.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was contacted and arrived on the scene to take charge of the investigation. As is policy for officers involved in shootings, the officer who discharged his firearm has been assigned to non-enforcement, administrative duties pending the conclusion of the investigation.
