State Auditor Shad White issued the following statement yesterday.
Today State Auditor Shad White announced that Former Alcorn County Tax Collector Larry Ross pled guilty to False Representations to Defraud the Government. The case was prosecuted Friday in Judge Funderburk’s courtroom, where Ross accepted his plea agreement.
Ross is guilty of creating a false bill of sale for a motor vehicle to lower the tax burden for an Alcorn County resident.
"Thank you to the district attorney's office for their dedicated work to bring this case to a close,” said Auditor White. “The investigators in my office will continue to hunt down illegal uses of taxpayer dollars in every corner of the state."
Ross was served with a $69,155.23 demand letter at the time of his arrest. The demand amount includes interest and investigative expenses. District Attorney John Weddle’s office prosecuted the case.
In addition to five years of post-release supervision, Ross was ordered to immediately resign from the Alcorn County Tax Collector’s Office and remove his name from the ballot.
Suspected fraud can be reported to the Auditor’s office online at any time by clicking the red button at www.osa.ms.gov or calling 1-(800)-321-1275 during normal business hours.

Hope the Madison county tax collector reads this so she can see elected officials must be lawful.
While this guy obviously messed up, that's not in question........but he didn't technically steal anything. He "created a false bill of sale for a resident to lower their tax burden"
He should be fired but 70 thousand dollar fine and jail time for that?? come on........
this right here is a shining example of a government that is too powerful
Again , guy broke the law, should be fired, name removed from the ballot , all of the things..........but the other stuff????!!! you can't honestly believe that's reasonable for the crime this man plead guilty to
"Five years of post release supervision." OK, but what is his jail time?

Do you really think this Copiah weasel only pulled this one stunt? Probably the easiest to prosecute and get him terminated for least cost to taxpayers.
It NEVER stops-
what about the owner of the car--does he skate?
Shad decided to get involved in the election. Why doesn’t Shad want this man on the ballot? What is Shad hiding? This is clearly a politically motivated witch-hunt from the globalist shadow government that controls Shad. If Shad can do this to him, when is he coming for you? I bet Shad already has a grand jury ready to indicate all the non globalist America first patriots.

Krusatyr is right, this was not a one off, but simply the offense used to get him to plead and resign. And I’m guessing he didn’t do this kind of thing for people pro bono.
8:37, if not the offender, who should pay for the county’s lost revenue and all of the investigative expenses?
Krusatyr sounds like my mother, whupping my ass for something I didn’t do and telling me I’d gotten away with something in the past and deserved a good few stripes anyway.
8:37 am That so many of you don't see that corruption and violating your oath of office by any public official is criminal IS OUR NATIONAL PROBLEM.
That history doesn't provide you the explanation for why this is dangerous should embarrass you. Indeed, if you profess to be a Christian, you also should understand.
And, it has never occurred to you that this sorry excuse for public servant didn't get a benefit "in kind". Perhaps, use of a condo at Destin or his boat for fishing or membership in a hunt club or that he'd be asked to do more favors now that this person had him by " the short hairs".
What you have is called " convenient ethics" which is no ethical framework at all. Whatever you individually want or need is your only basis of decision making. It's the same ethical pattern of sociopaths and psychopaths.
Read the more detailed story in local media. This wasn't "one off."
Um… if that is all he did then why isn’t Shad in Rankin County???? Hey Shad a silver platter awaits !!
My understanding is that there were other charges but this is the one that he admitted to. So no trial.
Bust this guy for helping a friend, Hinds Co no audit for four years. NO PROBLEM
August 29, 2023 at 9:38 AM, the offender got caught by not creating several shell companies, and running the money through family members. Those two mistakes, and not having the justice system in his pocket, doomed him to failure.
Signed:
Some guy that has eyes to see.
Thank you 9:46, I thought only my momma did that to me.
@ 9:50
8:37 here
I do not have convienent ethics
politics and religion have absolutely NOTHING to do with this so I am not sure how you made that leap.
you have "major overgeneralization" which is the same framework dumbasses and douche bags go by.
this is an old man who got caught and is paying for his crime that's all, I base my opinions in what I deem reasonable.
For the record I hate politicians on both sides of the isle, and I consider myself a christian (not sure how any of that matters but since you decided to bring it into this conversation).
The problem with people like you is you think you're smarter than everyone else which is a fallacy because obviously you lack the ability to view all sides of an issue objectively.
Good day sir
@10:08 I concur a silver platter awaits in Rankin County
"Hope the Madison county tax collector reads this so she can see elected officials must be lawful."
You talkin' about the Madison County Tax Collector who is retiring and whose office is currently under investigation for 3/4 of a million missing dollars? Or some other tax collector?
Fingerprint every Benjamin in Destin and you'll find that missing money.
I love it when old men get in public pissing contests anonymously.
Shad just doing his job. Maybe Lynn Fitch should do hers.
@ 4:04
How do you know those people are old, or men?
3:57, YEP, that would be the one. Just because she didn't run again and wont hold the office any longer doesnt mean the cold steel bracelets cant be put on her and let her hear the big steel door slam shut a tthe Travel Lodge on Hwy 51.
The sitting MadCo collector will skate and one of her employees will be crucified over it. Another one that should be looked at is the comptroller and county administrator while it all happened.
The charge to which he pled guilty was not his first rodeo. In fact, probably counting a hundred unaddressed others, he's no doubt a 'Silver Saddle' nominee on the circuit.

For those that think Kay Pace might have stolen money or done something illegal, I have one irrefutable fact on her side that would stand up in court. That fact is that she was never in the office long enough to steal or do anything illegal. She probably would have to use GPS to find the tax collector's office. With direct deposit, she didn't even have to show up to collect her check. If questioned about the missing money while on a witness stand she would probably say "I don't know what happened, because I wasn't there. Maybe you should ask someone who actually worked there."
