Justis Gibbs put a good ole-fashioned butt-whupping on Rukia Lumumba in the race for HD #72 tonight. Read and weep.
Gibbs: 1,558 votes (61%)
Lumumba: 982 votes (39%)
Total votes: 2,540
Gibbs will take the seat once held by his mother, Hinds County Circuit Judge Deborah Gibbs. This is the first time the Lumumba machine has suffered a real defeat.

Dear God let this be a sign of things to come
Gibbs Jr. is a talent. Heard him speak, he has the context and not just fluff
The broom. May we have it?
Please. And take it with you.
Good now I can stop getting Robocalls from Detroit to vote for Rukia! Wonder why would people in Detroit have an interest in HD 72?
I am in the House and was sweating bullets on this one!
Love it! This was the only race tonight in which I was interested.
This offers hope to all. Now if her brother loses when he runs for re-election it could slow the freefall for Jackson.
Her brother next in 2025.
Great news.
This is great news. I am not sure that the Lumumba machine has the muscle that it once did. BS can be smelled from a long way away. Justis Gibbs seemed like a genuine individual and I think he will do well.
So Sorry Sista ... Well, not really.
Might be the first time, but not the last.
There ain't no there there.
First electoral defeat with possibly more defeats of various sorts to come.
Even if it gets as bad as it did for Kwame Kilpatrick (former high flyer Detroit mayor) they can always hold hope that a Republican POTUS pardoning errybody for their federal crimes can happen again!
She’s a total moro and out of touch with any voters in Mississippi. Read her platform. No one wanted her ass. You can rest assure Chokwe is reading writing on the wall. This was a vote against her brother.
I always though that Princess Rukia was a loser, and this confirms it. Loser. Right?
Gavin win!
Just from the volunteers today you could tell Gibbs was family and friends driven! The other candidate had paid people holdings signs while they were asleep!!
One down, one more to go.
JUSTICE PREVAILS!
" the Lumumba machine has not the muscle that it once did."
(like Moe Green's response to Michael Corleone).
How did that work out ?
too bad it wasn't Chokwe
The Gibbs family do not have a hidden agenda! Want what’s best for ALL/EVERYONE!
I wouldn’t have voted for her, but then I never vote for women anyway.
Please let this be the sign we've all been hoping for. Please.
Maybe she will join Archie and demand a recount?? Suprised she didn't have her campaign all over Richard's disposal trucks. Lol
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!!
Even the uneducated voters are stating to see through the Lumumba family and what a fraud they are. There’s just not enough poor uneducated voters to make sure they stay poor and uneducated.
Think about it Rukia and Chokwe. They are seeing your true colors and how you are bothe bottom feeders. Awe shit. Never mind, you would never understand.
What % of the qualified electorate showed enough interest to even vote? That might be the real story here.
Bell-whether poll for the future Jackson mayoral race?
Everyone knows she won. It’s voter fraud. They just need to recount in order to find a few more votes. Or stage a rally when the votes are certified.
@8:57
To answer your question about Detroit. They elected a white mayor and Dan Gibson poured in millions of dollars rebuilding Detroit and they’re now mad more whites are moving into the city of Detroit and they were run out of the place.
She lost because of:
1. White flight (always a winning excuse)
2. Hurricane in the Gulf
3. Racist republicans
4. The Orange Man
5. Pearl River flooding
6. All of the above
Staci Abrams 2.0
Isn’t part of this district now in Madison County? I’m sure it’s the evil white democrats in Madison County that swung the election to Mr. Gibbs.
He only won by 120 votes or so in Ridgeland. His margin was much bigger. He kicked her ass in Hinds County. He didn't need Madison County to beat her badly.
and this is what happens when they get credible opponents that are decently funded, young and fresh, and not retreads such as Graham, Harvey, and Horhn.
Justis Prevails would have been a good headline too.
Can you smell that smell? Eau de Toilette, c'est le Parfum de Lumumba. Millions of gallons of raw sewer forming "inland beaches" for recreation. How could anyone with a nose vote Lamumba?
To call our country a democracy with a 2,540 voter turnout is worse than an embarrassment
Thank the Lord!!! Best news of the day. Now get her brother out. Make Jackson great again!!!
"Lumumba: 982 votes (39%)". Didn't know that there were this many family members in MS, but then again, Detroit is just a short flight away.
The soundbite oft repeated here at JJ that Antard is the the heir apparent for Thompson's seat has now been laid waste. Thompson, the LBC, and other black politicos will say the right things to appear as a unified front in support of black Jackson during the water debacle, etc but any thought that this represents a new coalesce behind the Lumumbas as regional or statewide black leaders is 100% political twaddle.
Chokwe Sr. put actual hard work into his efforts. Decades of it.
His children came away thinking all they had to do is talk their way into power.
Can someone get Rukia Kai to pay her property taxes now?
It couldn't happen to a nicer socialist!
I bet lil Shockway slept with the covers pulled up over his head--
bell·weth·er
/ˈbelˌweT͟Hər/
noun
the leading sheep of a flock, with a bell on its neck.
an indicator or predictor of something.
"college campuses are often the bellwether of change"
Great news
Wonder if Rukia did better in Madison County like last time
Thank you to Gibbs for running. Someone had to take one for the team. Hopefully someone steps up to take on the Mayor since most people don’t want to get involved in politics? Melvin Priester? Jeff Good? Someone else?
Even with the smaller runoff turnout Gibbs polled more votes than he did on August 8th while Lumumba received less. Even had Lumumba gotten all of her August 8th votes to the polls she still would have lost.
I think Jackson property values just went up, and Madison’s went down a little.
Here’s to hoping the Mayor gets the boot in 2025. East, Northeast, and Northwest Jackson will probably vote for someone other than the Mayor, assuming someone normal steps up to the plate. Hopefully Georgetown and Shady Oaks think like Stokes. Someone needs to explain to South Jackson that the Mayor didn’t do a darn thing about the millions of gallons of water leaking from that pipe for years that goes there. That Ted fixed it. I mean, I don’t really know anyone in South Jackson well, so hopefully they’re aware.
Jackson to the top. Wonder if the businesses leaving Jackson are having second thoughts between the Rukia loss, Ted, and the awesome job of the Cap Police.
Now to do something about these short term rentals in Jackson. If you bought a house in Jackson to Airbnb and live in Madison, you are a part of the problem. Get your butt down here and water your lawn.
Thank God.
10:02 even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. It'll take a lot more victories before people are regretful for leaving Jackson.
I would be thrilled if Melvin Priester would run for mayor. Anyone attempting to attack him would be quickly made the fool and unlike on the City Council, he would have enough clout to make a difference.
10:02 AM
No. Jackson still has a rats nest of other problems: Crime, roads (hoping that fixing water mains cuts down on road issues), garbage collection to name a few. Jackson hasn't hit rock bottom yet (though it appears close).
Darn, we needed Rukia's leadership at the state level to continue to turn things around in Jackson. I can feel the Lumumba energy and momentum. There are great things on the horizon for Jackson all because of the Lumumba vision.
Just kidding.
LUMUMBA LOSES are two of my favorite words. Any day Choke and Rukia lose is a good day for Jacksonians and mankind in general.
I would have liked to vote for Gibbs and against Queen Lumumba but I had to take care of Delbert first... and they wouldn't let me cross over...
Speaking of 2025. IF Ashby retires, who is in line to replace him?
“He kicked her ass in Hinds County.” That’s what I’m talking about. That’s where it it matters. One down, one to go. This is a very good thing. It’s time to put the Lumumbas in a vise grip and tighten that sucker until that lying sob Chokwe is gone for good.
@1:07, I have heard rumors.
@1:07
Prob some hotty toddy ole miss crowd physician from eastover will replace him. I’ve heard some names going around
The Lumumba family believes in justice for all Jacksonians, but they spell it "just us."
Don't overlook Kim Wade for Mayor. The city is going to have to have someone like Kim to get in there and shake things up to bring it back. There's no small task ahead of someone to get things sorted out, and if you listen to Kim on the radio every day, he proposes the type of genuine, common sense actions it's going to take to bring Jackson back......even a little bit. We can't continue like it is now and expect it to recover. In fact, unless there is a kick-ass attitude from a new mayor, you can expect more of the same cultural decline you're getting right now!
Choke Sr. worked hard and reached out to listen to the community in his short time as mayor. Mayor Chokwe Jr. has ruined his family name and legacy. Since he has been mayor "everything" in City has gotten worse. He feels he is better and smarter than everyone else. I don't know his sister but some voted for Gibbs in protest of the name Lumumba..
Is Angelique is paying attention to the drubbing that just happened? Gibbs likely north of 63% in the Ward 2 Jackson precincts. Voting as a Lumumba lapdog like she has the last two years would be a big mistake from here to 2025.
Take a look at her campaign finance reports to see where the out of state money was coming into her campaign.
Can you guess the cities and states?
St. Patrick's day weekend she was part of the parade. She had teenagers in ski masks riding in cars with her face and campaign on the side of the car. I am glad people saw through that.
Next stop, city council.
I am so tired of seeing ski mask and the sort in Jackson. It’s a shame. Too bad none of the politicians know how much of an issue it is, or they are cowards and won’t do anything about it. With the exception of maybe Stokes.
Nike makes things like ski mask. The murder rate of Jackson has been 50 to 100 times higher than that of the city that Nike headquarters is in. I’m no attorney, but I would think Lynn Fitch would be interested in suing Nike’s butt for helping criminals while hiding in their safe places.
In Jackson ski mask are referred to as shisters.
Jackson to the top in 2025!
I hear Virgi is getting a primary from one of the Belhaven scene folks. A Democrat, sure, but YOUNG people are investing in Jackson.
The Ole Miss to JXN Council pipeline is the only pipe that hasn't burst in this city.
I am disappointed Lumumba lost.
Ever since Adrienne Wooten left, the House debates have been boring.
Same old, same old. Lee supported Gibbs. Better than Rukia would have been, but it's going to be the same old same old. Debra never wrote a bill. Justice will probably be the same. Sitting still is better than going backward I guess.
What a time to be alive. Anyone who wants to be mayor, it’s up for grabs!
Low risk high reward. Maybe someone out there actually wants to serve and shake sh*t up.
Let’s start with a real audit.
I’ve been gone from Jackson for 9 years; is he former Judge Robert Gibbs’ son?
Judge Gibbs was a fine judge & man.
Unfortunately, you folks in Madison cannot vote in the Mayor's race for Jackson. Same old, same old will repeat and the decline will continue to accelerate.
She outraised Gibbs by over 60 k and still got embarrassed. Wow.
Word on the street is our dear Sista's people told Lee last night the good Sista would run against her in two years.
@2:23 "Kim Wade for mayor" ?? Say what? Kim is an entertaining and intelligent radio star, but he is NOT a non-glamour seeking producer of positive policies willing to sit at a desk and get hard, succrssful management done and inspire others to do the same. Being mayor would be too joyless for the creative Kim Wade.
@2:23 - Damned right.
KF, I called it above. "Next stop city council."
A group has approached Ben to do it again, 71 or not. HE would confront the lil Shift.
5:04, call him up and ask him. Regardless what he says, send him a donation.
Truly abattle of Names. Rukia is an activist who has never been a victim. Gibbs is an Attorney who has never been in court.
Anyone running Jackson should have the media take them to the Zoo, highway 80, and McDowell Road on camera and ask them how they can say they are running a functional City.
It’s a shooting range 2 blocks west of Highland Village.
Vote them all out!
11:17 pretty much said what I wanted to say and about 50,000 to 60,000 plus people, maybe more who think the same thing. St. Richards Academy is currently contructing a “Wall” around their playground to shield the children from gunfire. Now, how do y’all feel about that? We never in our lives thought we would ever see a day where we would have to go to these extremes. If I am correct it was more than a year ago that the law enforcement were setting up roadblocks in parts of Jackson to capture criminals and it was stopped because, and I hope I get my wording correctly, infringing on the rights of the criminals. They couldn’t call it racist because the vast majority of law enforcement conducting the actions were black.
Without full-body Kevlar, Wade would not last a full week. The city is far too crime ridden at a high level. Most of you think it's all about yoots popping off caps at each other. The criminal element is wide, deep and professional in this town.
KIM WADE IS THE MAN!!!! I hope he decides to run.....Jackson needs a good "KIck Ass" mayor and Kim knows it! It is going to take a real and genuine results oriented person to bring Jackson together on the things that matter.....Kim is the MAN!!!
What about Kim’s Covid-19 hubris? Why is he so quiet now about all that conspiracy talk he did before he ended up in the ICU?
"Gibbs Junior is a talent. I've heard him speak".....
Really? 99% of you/us could have said the same thing about Lumumba 8 years ago. But where the hell is the beef? For those of us who don't know him, tell us what your expectations are and on what you base those expectations. The council doesn't need eloquence. It needs action.
Thanks.
