Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics today announced that Mississippi’s unemployment rate reached a new record low in July 2023. July’s 3.0% unemployment rate marks the fifth consecutive month that Mississippi set a new record low.
“For five months in a row, Mississippi has made history with our vibrant economy,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “More Mississippians are working, they’re making higher wages, and they’re better able to provide for their families. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”
Mississippi’s new all-time low unemployment rate is another major win for the state. Mississippi was recently recognized as one of the top five states for high-quality pre-K. Mississippi’s high school graduation rate is currently at an all-time high, and the state is leading the nation in fourth grade reading and math gains. Additionally, according to newly released results from the 2022-23 Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP), students have now achieved record results in mathematics, English Language Arts, science, and U.S. History.
In 2022, Mississippi set a record in new private capital investment when it finalized over $6 billion in new economic development projects. This includes the largest economic development project in Mississippi’s history, a $2.5 billion investment that will create 1,000 jobs with an average annual salary of almost $100,000.

Kingfish note: The Fed reports the labor participation rate for July was 54.4%.

This can't be. Brandon Presley says our economy is in the crapper.
I lost faith in any information the government publishes a long time ago.
These figures are fuzzy math, because they only take into account people who will actually accept employment. The unwashed masses will believe anything the MSM parrots from the Biden criminal executive branch.
That Tate is a remarkable man. He has been single handedly out finding jobs for people. What a leader!
This is one of those things that sound good but look deeper and it’s bad. You’re basically telling companies don’t come to Mississippi because we won’t have a workforce for you.
As KF noted, this presumably does not include the 45% of able-bodied people of working age who are not working, and are not actively seeking employment.
So, it's really more like 48%, depending on how we define "unemployment."
The steadily declining US labor force participation rate is the real story. Half of us who work support the other half who don't.
By the way, "labor force participation" is the percentage of WORKING AGE ADULTS who are working or seeking to be. It does NOT include children and retirement aged people.
As Trump would say... sad.
A friend who's been a US postman for many decades said you'd be appalled at the number of people (and which ones!) who get SSDI 'crazy checks' every month. (Meaning working adults who don't seem physically disabled.)
I guess hard work pays off eventually, but laziness pays off now.
The unemployment rate has fallen everywhere! Mainly because so many people have decided they don’t need to work! But the ignorant masses will see this as good news.
Not for one second do I believe this B.S.
What exactly does that number mean?
@6:59
Tate releases statement, ivermectin brain blames Biden.
It must hurt to be stupid.
@6:59 You are correct. That’s why they publish the labor participation rate KF provides above. The unwashed masses apparently believe anything because they can’t be bothered to read the post.
Well the 3% unemployed must be the lazy doofus that walk around Jackson all day. Walk walk walk. All around the trash on the roads. Walk walk walk. Goofy ass people.
If they added up all the ‘stay at home’ moms who leach money for ‘raising kids’ I bet it would be 20% minimum. Can’t go to a grocery store without seeing an urban country degenerate. Combine that group with the handout crowd and Mississippi is doomed.
It's the job growth rate during a term in office that matters.
MS added 11000 jobs, the lowest among ALL our neighbors.
Moreover, Tate can thank the feds for that!
Never ceases to amaze me that Mississippians who hate the federal government depend on it and NOT just the poor! It's the federal money for infrastructure and highways etc.
Try to find out how government works and who does what and where the money originates!
The mailman hasn’t delivered a check in 20 years, it’s all direct deposited.
11:51, if the people you describe represent 3% of the population, that would imply a state population of about 10 million.
6:36, so now stay home moms are the bad guys? Geez
Will Brandon's policies raise the "we don't want to work" metric? And what is Tate doing to lower the "we don't want to work" metric?
@6:59am Bullseye. Do NOT trust anything a city, state, or national government reports. It's filtered, crunched, re-washed and cherry picked three times over until it shows the positive outcome for the masses to swallow.
If you trust a government, you must have repeatedly failed history class.
@6:36
Who are stay at home moms leaching money from? Their husbands? Or are you referring to the thousands of Mississippi moms who take their kids to the “right” doctor to get them classified as disabled so they get those monthly checks coming in. One check per kid until they reach 18 years old.
The most important and devastating piece of recent news is that India just bought a few hundred million barrels of oil from the UAE using Indian Rupees instead of USD. This was a HUGE step for the BRICS decoupling oil purchases from the USD. They now how OPEC on their side. What’s going to happen to our inflated fiat paper when it’s no longer the world’s reserve currency to buy oil? My guess is Zimbabwe and Honduras style hyperinflation.
Seems to me that "the ladies do protest too much" as the GOP thinks everyone else is corrupt, but the legal realities are that corruption is found most often in the GOP. The only explanation for Democrats being more corrupt is every single Republican controlled State or Administration is too damn stupid to find EVIDENCE of Democratic corruption, but the Democrats have no problem in finding GOP corruption.
After all, knowledge and good observation skill are more important life skills than marksmanship as they are needed more often, and actually help you use your gun safely and accurately, so you won't just be another idiot with a weapon.
Which party has pardoned it's party's convicted felons who are big time names? Hmmm?
More over, your party is the ONLY one who have been influenced by clinically diagnosed and institutionalized the mentally ill and drug addicts as party loyalists who spokespersons who influenced you on television. We can start with Liddy, add radio and Fox hosts and Pillow man and (what is he now?) Ye.
You apparently are the party of the deaf and blind too if you think Jan 6th was just a protest/tour of the Capitol for tourists and ignorant the published evidence and can't read the transcripts under oath. Oh yeah, you don't seem to know there's a difference between words said under oath and those that weren't, which is pretty odd for those who claim Christianity as THEIRS. If a Democrat had held a Bible upside down, you'd go nuts!
And, about that...the leader of YOUR Party doesn't go to church. He's never been a regular church goer and hell; I don't know if he's ever even been baptized in any denomination. Tell me again which denomination he claims?
You hate gays, but you never suspect the "never married" or " never photographed with a date" elected officials of your party seem to have a nice swish to their gait. You have zero gaydar, so you are "frightened" of gays. This minute you have several in YOUR party right here in Mississippi. You couldn't tell a gay from pedophile. Here's a hint, watch their eyes and see who they are "checking out" and who they can't take their "eyes off of". That'll work in churches and schools too. It's not 100% so oh DO try not to overreact as is your usual MO, but just remain alert and guarded.
No doubt the Democrats are well known for alcoholism and infidelity but hey, this five minute, that's not so scary, besides, your esteem leader wins the prize for sex scandals and his didn't always include willing participants or else his partner was "bought".
So, spare me. I'm an independent who'll vote for the person whose BEHAVIOR seems the most ethical and sane and who seems to have an IQ with 3 digits.
And, yeah, I don't like any extremist whose ranting, raving or looting but I sure am less frightened by Antifa (stands for anti-fascist) than I do Neo-Nazis (who are...duh...fascists).
And, for those of you who think your "esteemed Leader's" snide remarks and name calling are clever and see his threats as strength or you need a gun on your hip to feel "safe", haven't read nearly enough about Churchill or any other hero of history. You emotionally and intellectually haven't matured beyond the school playground years. Anyone who has matured just ignores you and stops listening or attempts to enlighten you (slim chance but they are the kindest of folks). The female judge and prosecutor he's threatened have the brains and resources to take care of themselves and their families. You just go ahead and end up in court or jail like you did last time and imagine, like Roger Stone did, that he'll "pardon" you right away if elected. Roger stayed behind bars quite a while and got "poorer" in the process.
By the way, "labor force participation" is the percentage of WORKING AGE ADULTS who are working or seeking to be. It does NOT include children and retirement aged people.
Nope. Incorrect.
They now how OPEC on their side.
UAE is not the only member of OPEC. When oil starts trading for Central African francs let us know. Doubt you're prepared to weather the hyperinflation you seem eager to enjoy.
I see a lot of comments bitching about things nobody said or did in the post, or in the comments.
It looks to me like some comments are just a rant looking for an excuse to be published.
That’s the real purpose behind this big push to cut the income tax. They aren’t trying to “put more money in your pocket “ they are trying to by default cut many social programs that the poor depend on. When that happens, you’ll have a real need to grab your guns. They’re not going back to work.
@10:48
Why are you projecting so hard?
I saw nothing in the original comment that stated they were “eager” for hyperinflation.
I’ve been following the BRICS developments as well. The entire pact is designed to target us and our hegemony. Any progress the BRICS pact makes is detrimental to the United States.
“ A friend who's been a US postman for many decades said you'd be appalled at the number of people (and which ones!) who get SSDI 'crazy checks' every month. (Meaning working adults who don't seem physically disabled.)”
Hey, friend. We haven’t mailed social security checks for some time.
10:34,
“The labor force participation rate is an estimate of an economy’s active workforce. The formula is the number of people ages 16 and older who are employed or actively seeking employment, divided by the total non-institutionalized, civilian working-age population.” https://www.investopedia.com/terms/p/participationrate.asp
For some historical perspective.
The labor force participation rate rose from late 1964, 58.6%, to a high of 67.3% in spring of 2000. It fell from 2000 to summer 2015, 62.5%. It rose until 2020 to 63.3, fell again due to COVID, and has risen back to 62.6%.
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/CIVPART/
I would guess that the rise from 1964 to 2000 reflects, in large part, the increase in women in the workplace.
Mississippi median household income:
Kirk Fordice: January 14, 1992, to January 11, 2000:
$34,299/$41,990: 81.68%.
Ronnie Musgrove: January 11, 2000, to January 13, 2004: $34,755/$44,334: 78.39%.
Haley Barbour: January 13, 2004, to January 10, 2012: $36,641/$51,017: 71.82%.
Phil Bryant: January 10, 2012, to January 14, 2020:
$45,134/$68,010: 66.36%
Tate Reeves: January 14, 2020, to Jan. _, 2024
2021:
$46,637/$70,784: 65.89%.
(Source: Table H-8. Median Household Income by State: 1984 to 2021: U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey, Annual Social and Economic Supplements.)
For each governor, the dates are when he took office and left office. The income numbers and percentage are, with the exception of Reeves, Mississippi's median household income, the national median household income, and Mississippi's percentage of same for the year of that governor's departure from office. (I selected that year as the best indicator of the final effect of each governor's economic policies, as well as of the economy the next governor inherited.) For Reeves, the last year for which we have national and state median income numbers is 2021, which should be a pretty good indicator of the effectiveness of his administration's policies, since he has governed Mississippi as Lt. Gov. or Gov. since January 2012.
@1:34 PM. Great research. Mississippi is going backwards under the Bryant/Reeves maladministration. Here's another number for "NumbersMan" Tate: today in Mississippi there are 5,000 fewer people working than there were in 2019 when Tate was elected governor.
Mabus was 66.7%, 68.9%, 67.3%, 64.6% ('88 through '91).
What a total failure. But we already knew that.
If Presley was Guv today running for re-election on today's economy you fools would be claiming he walks on water.
National trend. Thanks to Biden.
@1246
Bless your heart
As an employer, what we are left with are the following:
Uneducated
Current of former drug abusers (you won’t have any employees if you test your work force)
People who were raised in a household with no work ethic (notice I did not say “home”, there is a difference)
People who have terrible attitudes toward discipline and authority.
People who do not show up regularly or have to go to the dentist for “meth mouth”. This is more prevalent than you think.
People who do not believe in a reliable form of transportation and just want to buy a $1,500 pile of junk to get from A to B.
People who will not take on responsibility to obtain a better life for their already dysfunctional families to end the cycle.
People who want more money than they will ever be worth because of all of the above and they will not try to do better.
In the blue collar work force you are not going to get the polished, but there was a time in our country when a young person could start in a blue collar job without being anchored in tuition debt and excel. I did that and have enjoyed a good life. We failed by pushing and shoving “college education” down the throats of people who many were not that type material.
I try to advise employees on how to work hard a be diligent to have a better life but only 1 out of 10 listen because the other 9 are products of a terrible upbringing. And now you see why our Southern border is being flooded with illegals.
"This is one of those things that sound good but look deeper and it’s bad. You’re basically telling companies don’t come to Mississippi because we won’t have a workforce for you."
I've told you this before, Luther, but let me repeat it, hoping it might sink in: No company relocates hoping the available unskilled and untrained workforce will join the company.
Any company looking to relocate assesses the job market and labor market, including the skills that exist in the community chiefly among the EMployed who will see the advantage of joining the incoming company.
Of course, if an incoming company needs 400 people to sit on Coke cases and knock mortar off old bricks, your analysis might be true.
That's insane analysis 1:34pm. So in reality, since 1992, Mississippi has slowly been getting even more poorer in comparison to the USA. Sad.
Hope we can turn things around.
State unemployment rate falls to 3%. Big Whoop!
The more important metric, and most destructive to our republic, is the ever-increasing number of 'folk' who are riding in the wagon and will never come down to pull.
If DOL were to study and publish that number on a monthly basis, the democrat party would go entirely out of existence, forever. Or would it rejoice?
